How many times has your child come to you with questions that have left you feeling at a loss for what to say? Thankfully, my guest, Dr. Lauren Starnes, has you covered! In this episode, Dr. Starnes and I talk about how to talk about hard things with our children. We are talking about miscarriage, death of a pet, divorce, and gun violence. Regardless of the topic, she says that we want to get into the practice of giving ourselves a moment to respond. In other words, to pause. This practice lets you gather your thoughts, notice your emotions and center yourself. It's ok to take a moment so you can be intentional about what you say, versus blurting out something you can't take back. Dr. Starnes guides us through the process of finding out what your child knows and thinks about what they're asking about, how they feel, and what you can do for next steps.  It's inevitable that you kids will come to you with big questions, and this will help you navigate these delicate waters with confidence.  For a copy of Lauren's handouts on divorce and gun violence from the book “Big Conversations with Little Children”, go to the Parent Toolbox to download them for free. www.parent-toolbox.com About Dr. Lauren Starnes Dr. Lauren Starnes is the senior vice president and chief academic officer at Goddard Systems, LLC., the franchisor of The Goddard School. About Farzeen and Goddard School: As an early childhood educator and mother of four, I have always been aware of the importance of Safe, Nurturing, Quality Education environments. It has long been my dream to open a daycare center that provides the best in early childhood education for families in the town of Sudbury and surrounding communities. In 2008 I shared this vision with my husband and was thrilled that he was completely on board with the idea. Sadly, shortly thereafter, he suffered a stroke and naturally my attention turned to his care, in addition to my home-based child care business. Although his daily challenges were at times insurmountable, my husband's belief in and encouragement of my dream of opening a daycare school never once wavered. His passing in 2013 left a large hole in my life and the lives of our children. During this time I was not only grieving his loss, but also lamenting the probability that my dream of opening a childcare school was just that – a dream. Let me say right now that my four children are amazing human beings! They are my backbone, my support, my champions. My pride for them is unmeasurable. They completed their education at prestigious universities during the time period when their father was paralyzed and his eventual demise. Their heartache was palpable and yet they had the strength and determination to focus on their studies and encourage me to follow my dream. Over time, my children and I decided to take the first steps toward realizing my vision. My daughter, who I consider my best friend, accompanied me to various daycare franchises as this journey began to unfold. After visits to many franchises we decided on The Goddard® School, based on their outstanding programs and offerings. Today, I am proud to be the on-site owner of The Goddard School of Sudbury at 437 Boston Post Road. It is a journey I could not have taken without the constant support and encouragement of my children, who have become my partners. I am also grateful to O'Sullivan Architects. Inc. of Peabody, Massachusetts and Wozny/Barbar & Associates, Inc. (WB&A) of Hanover, Massachusetts who served as project architect and MEP engineer, respectively in addition to the civil engineering firm of Williams & Sparages of Middleton, MA. Appreciative doesn't come close to describing my sentiments for my general contractor, Acella Construction. The Acella team went above and beyond in turning a former Rite Aid® and Subway® shop into the beautiful Goddard School of Sudbury, my 15,000 square foot franchised private preschool and educational daycare facility. Without their assistance, respect, and dedication this project would not have been completed on time – but I am happy to say that any and all construction challenges were handled by Acella allowing me to finally say that my dream of owning a daycare center that provides the best in early childhood education is now a reality. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Who is the founder & Owner of LightupwithShua Podcast and LUWS ACADEMY LLC ? visit: lightupwithshua.com I am a student of knowledge of multiple disciplines, a mentor, and an intercultural & Interfaith practitioner, who wants to help heal and solve problems by bringing awareness for conscious living and conscious parenting to people with flexible mindset. The Conversation Factory
Conscious Co-founders

The Conversation Factory

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 25, 2022 49:31

In this conversation, I sat down with my friend Doug Erwin, the Senior Vice President of Entrepreneurial Development at EDAWN, the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada. Doug is a former serial entrepreneur turned economic developer and executive coach, and he's committed to growing Northern Nevada's startup and technology ecosystem. His community work has helped change the perception of Reno and lay the foundation for future generations of entrepreneurs to thrive in the region. Doug is proud to support entrepreneurs as they embark upon their own journeys.    Doug shares, with great clarity, vulnerability and humility, his entrepreneurial journey and some key lessons he's learned along the way. I invited Doug to have a conversation with me about what it might mean to be a conscious cofounder, given Doug's personal work on mindfulness. Towards the end of the conversation, we arrive at the idea that we are our own most important cofounder - the conversations we have with ourselves will either lead us to lean into or turn away from challenging conversations with our cofounders. And with the lens of Triple Loop Learning, we can start to create better cofounder relationships, not just with better contracts and financial structures, but from our way of being. The basic metaphor is this: Work is a relationship. And relationships are made of conversations. And you can hear this in Doug's description of a company as a “rebound startup” or talking about startups like a marriage. And just like in personal relationships, sometimes, as Doug says, people want to turn away from the discomfort of having difficult conversations. Doug mentioned research about splits among founders and how it related to the future success of the company. I did a bit of digging and... It's counter-intuitive, that a startup with equal distributions is a red flag to investors, and that such a company is more likely to fail. Doug suggests that unequal distributions are proof that the founders have had some hard conversations - which is a key skill in work and life. However, roughly three out of four startups decide to split the business equally when they start up. One of the main issues with this approach isn't a question of HOW to make the split, but WHEN. A 2016 HBR article suggests that founders should wait to split shares until later, co-creating rules to determine the value of various contributions. (I recommend the book Slicing the Pie!). The HBR authors suggest that “teams that negotiate longer are more likely to decide on an unequal split: the harder you look, the more likely you are to discover important differences. More generally, [they] argue that if cofounders haven't learned something surprising about each other from their dialogue, they probably haven't engaged in a serious enough discussion yet.” The HBR article suggests that a hastily created equal split will sour over time - the percentage of founders who are unhappy with their split increases by 2.5x as their startups mature. That discontent can lead to rapid turnover, which can be problematic. Another study, led by Professor David Noack, Executive Director of the Hall Global Entrepreneurship Center at the Goddard School of Business and Economics at Utah's Weber State University suggests that an equal split, especially in early-stage companies, has another unexpected effect - making it unclear who's driving the bus. According to Professor Noack's research, if no one feels that they have ownership and responsibility, no one takes the wheel, which has a real effect:  Companies with an unequal split were 21.7% more likely than other firms to be up and running a year later. And just like in a marriage, having a “pre-nup” conversation can be awkward, even when people know the data about divorce.  While it's uncomfortable to do so, hosting a conversation to explore all the negative scenarios that might occur in the future, with corresponding actions to help avoid them, can help founders avoid headaches later on…and increase startups' chances of success. This is a conversation worth listening to…And I'm excited to share it with you! You can also head over there and become a monthly supporter of the show for as little as $8 a month. The team visited the school on July 11 for the second year in a row, going through basketball drills and even enjoying popsicles with the students. The players interacted with dozens of children. “We love coming out and working with kids,” said Kim Demmings, director of operations for women’s basketball. Thomas Baker, the assistant education director at The Goddard School, said the players are great role models for the students. “It’s also important for them to see that women are sports figures too and it’s not just the boys or the men that are playing sports, but you know, girls can do everything too,” he said.

13: A Non-Traditional Franchise Financing Option, With Guest Ron Feldman

Franchise Secrets Podcast

If you’re looking at funding options as a new franchisee and are struggling with the franchise financing options available to you, we’re here to tell you there are options. You can certainly go a traditional route through a bank, but sometimes it just isn't possible. Luckily, there are more non-traditional routes available to you. In this episode, I talk with Apple Pie Capital Chief Development Officer (CDO) Ron Feldman about the ins and outs of financing, franchise validation, resources available to you—and more. Ron started in the franchise industry when he and his wife purchased into The Goddard School Franchise. He has also worked as the Chief Development Officer at FRANdata and was the Chief Brand Strategist with Siegel Financial Group. Ron gives us insight into his unique and extensive background in franchising that you don’t want to miss! Outline of This Episode [0:41] Ron Feldman Introduction [5:53] What is Apple Pie and how is it different? [11:21] What does Apple Pie look for in emerging brands? [13:50] Definition of an emerging brand [18:20] Resources for franchisees [21:55] How do you look at item 19? [24:00] Validation is absolutely critical to the process [30:42] Successful franchises and what to look for [35:40] Combining brands and resources [42:57] Why you need a professional team surrounding you What is Apple Pie Capital and how is it different than traditional lending? I first came across Apple Pie Capital when I had already launched two of my franchise locations with Sola Salon Studios—and then the SBA refused to finance the 3rd. Our lending partner was gone. I was an established franchisee with an established brand but was suddenly forced to find a different option. This is where a non-traditional franchise lender became my solution and could be yours as well. They provide a unique online platform that is a streamlined and simple solution for someone in the franchise industry to source funding. One of the top lenders in the business, their focus is to lower barriers to entry. They do so by handling everything from start to finish, beginning with one easy online application, then laying out all of your options. They actually want to help you achieve your goals and to grow smartly. They are one of the few lenders who only work in franchising.  Why the difference between a “start-up” and “emerging brand” matters when it comes down to Franchise Financing If you’re looking at buying a franchise but want to jump in on an emerging brand, there are some things you should consider. First, you want to invest in an emerging brand and not a start-up. For the purpose of this explanation, a start-up is a franchise that has fewer than 25 franchise units. An emerging brand is considered a franchise with 25-100 units open and running. If a franchise has sold over 100 units, they are likely no longer relying on the franchise fees for their overhead costs (which is crucial).  So why does this matter? You need to give a particular franchise time to become a proven brand. Apple Pie is more willing to lend you money faster than any other lender—but they also need a way to measure their investment. If a franchise has 10 or more years of operating history or they have 25 units open for 3+ years APC considers them an emerging brand that they’re willing to dive into with you. Keep listening to our conversation as we cover the details, and talk about some of the resources available for new franchises. As an emerging brand, you’ll want to take advantage of networking opportunities As an emerging franchisor or someone who’s bought a new franchise, you’re going to have a lot to learn. Some great opportunities for learning come from conferences geared towards franchisees. The International Franchise Association hosts a conference geared exactly towards those just starting out in the market. So if you’re newer in the industry, this one is a great place to start. A couple of other resources that Ron and I both recommend include the UnConference and the Springboard conference. They are founded and hosted by some of the most knowledgeable people in the industry. Events like these can be a great way to learn from others what to do, what not to do, and a way to make lasting connections. Keep listening for another great way to learn the ins and outs of franchising. The importance of the validation process for the potential franchisee One of Ron’s favorite quotes is by Anthony Martino, “franchising is simple, as long as franchisees make money”. While funny, it’s completely on the nose. Apple Pie Capital utilizes research from FRANdata as well as their own personal experience to validate the franchise you’re buying. They’re able to get a lot of data that you as the franchisee don’t have access to. Likewise, you need to be diligent with your own validation process, which we cover more in-depth in this podcast. You need to reach out to current franchisees and question them about every part of the process. Ron shares that they got more calls from prospective franchisees for The Goddard School when they sold than any of the 10 years they operated it. Listen to the rest of the episode as he explains why this was so smart and the right questions to ask. Greg McKeown is the bestselling author of the book, “Essentialism” - The Disciplined Pursuit of Less. The term best seller is used a lot, so let us clarify this is the real deal. The book was published 3.5 years ago and as of this writing is ranked as the 1,289 bestselling book on Amazon. Overall. That’s a big, big deal. And now having studied the book, we know why. It’s a game changer. A life changer. As you will hear in this interview, it’s not about minimalism. It’s more about making the right and best decisions. Putting decisions to an extreme tests. Being in control. A great analogy that sets a good stage is, Greg says that in an emergency, “Everyone is an essentialist.” We get on task, on target, divest ourselves of non-necessities, and do what is most efficient, effective and successful. Jordan Harbinger of The Art of Charm podcast and empire was on stage at a live event he was MCing in Las Vegas and he gave us his favorite Ziglar quote, and why. The quote? “You can have everything in life you want if you will help enough other people get what they want.” Then this is interesting, I had been taking our guests quotes and crafting a question around them and posting to the Ziglar Facebook page which has nearly 4.5 million fans. We get many, many comments. This time however, I posted to my personal page at agentkmiller. We’ve never gotten so many in depth, authentic comments. So much that it was really hard to filter through and decide what to bring you, as it was too much to share them all. On that note, you are welcome to friend me at agentkmiller on Facebook, as I’ll be posting a question around our guests’ ZigBomb every week. So what is the question I posted that provoked so many deep comments? I asked, “While the concept sounds all well and great, where have you had success or challenge in living this concept out? What concerns and/or feedback do you have regarding the statement? Be as raw and honest as you will.” And people were just that, raw and honest. I brought in my co-host Michelle Prince to talk through some of the comments. Thanks to Joey who just left a 5 star review in iTunes and testifying to Tom Ziglar, right after some grumpy soul left a stinger about Tom. You will find very few world leaders and influencers who don’t site it as a primary message that helped enable their success, just like Zig Ziglar’s “See You At The Top”. Jordan’s primary focus at The Art of Charm is social skills. Personal relationship skills. There is arguably NOTHING that impacts our lives for better or worse, than our social skills. Yet when and where are they taught? Nowhere unless you were fortunate enough to have parents like mine who had me read the book and took me to Carnegie Classes. In this show we drill down into the necessity and opportunity of social skills. There is nothing you have more control over, can take action on quicker and will produce greater results in your life.
