We swear to god, we haven't turned into a sports podcast (despite all Matt's efforts). But it turns out there's a not-insignificant intersection between the World Cup, democracy, and authoritarianism. So we invited Alex Shephard—a senior editor and writer at the New Republic and founder of Golden Goal, a literary magazine about the 2026 World Cup—to walk us through the dramas, controversies, and political implications of the global tournament that's kicking off this week. Whether you're obsessed with sports, like Matt, or have barely heard of them, like Aaron, there's something in this conversation for you.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

SEASON 4 EPISODE 70: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: We are all looking at it backwards: That was Tulsi Gabbard’s passive-aggressive mini-coup against Trump - about Iran, and the elections. That's what she did in her Senate testimony – and what her deputy Joe Kent did when he resigned, a day earlier (and you think THAT was a coincidence of timing?) In a kind of bizarre code, through omission and not commission, they called Trump a liar about Iran and nukes. Not nobly or bravely. But they did it. They left no other conclusion that Trump was and is lying about Iran. Under oath. And THEN Gabbard passive-aggressively called Trump a LIAR AGAIN about the seized ballots in Georgia. Under oath. She testified that HE sent her. It might be a break in the damn; it might be trivial. It is NOT nothing. Because everybody has a moment in which they realize that they have to protect their own assets - and this might've been theirs. Lord knows all the allies have found theirs. Trump literally has no support from anyone, and the EU just started talking to Iran about a deal to get its ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump is neck high in quicksand that he ordered and installed - and he's run out of people to blame. Plus I'll explain what the hell Trump meant when he said “DIG WE MUST" instead of "drill baby drill." (It was his brain defaulting back to 1962 and it's a really bad sign). B-Block (26:00) SPORTSBALL TONIGHT: Are there ANY good feelings left from the US Olympics Men's Hockey Gold? Now the scorer of the winning goal, Jack Hughes, is demanding they give him the puck rather than enshrine it forever at the Hockey Hall of Fame, and an ESPN commentator is demanding we ignore "politics" and admit Russia to the next international tournament (while Russia is aiding Iran, who we are - like it or not - at war with). (34:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Newt Gingrich falls for an internet troll who wants to create an instant Trump Canal in the Middle East using nukes. Rachel Maddow becomes the umpteenth commentator to insist HER favorite Trump scandal should be getting more attention than the others. And not only did the Los Angeles Dodgers desecrate Dodger Stadium by slapping a sponsor name on it - but they then lied and said they HADN'T sold the naming rights. C-Block (56:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: My great grandfather not only turned down stock - circa 1907 - in the company that would become General Motors, but according to family lore he gave the owner the idea for the NAME "General Motors." We are not businessmen.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Hour 1 with Bob Pompeani and Joe Starkey: The Penguins took a point but lost 6-5 in a thrilling overtime matchup against Carolina. Erik Karlsson is playing his best hockey as a Penguin, BY FAR. Jack Hughes wants the puck back from the Hockey Hall of Fame for his Golden Goal. Tyler Kennedy thinks it's embarrassing that Hughes wants to give the puck to his father and not keep in the Hall of Fame.
Jack Hughes wants the puck back from the NHL Hall of Fame for his Golden Goal. Sidney Crosby said he's fine not having his Golden Goal puck and is happy it is in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Tyler Kennedy thinks it's embarrassing that Hughes wants the puck. TK doesn't think that's Hughes' puck to have.
This week, the boys discuss the Maple Leafs not sticking up immediately for their captain, international travel, and international games. Lyle Richardson of Spector's Hockey joins to talk about Bill Guerin gunning for more talent and is Jack Hughes the rightful owner of the Golden Goal puck??
There are currently debates and disagreements about who should have the "golden goal" puck from the USA men's & women's Olympic gold medal games!?

Nick Kypreos, Justin Bourne and Sam McKee begin the second hour discussing Jack Hughes' request for the golden goal hockey puck from the Hockey Hall of Fame and the Hall's response, the potential for Leon Draisaitl to avoid surgery and be good-to-go for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Gary Bettman doubling down on his league's seeding format, and Russia's status for the World Cup. Then, Columbus Blue Jackets' head coach Rick Bowness stops by (18:30) to chat about his return to coaching, his Blue Jackets' success, and adjusting to a new team during a hockey season. Afterwards, Sportsnet hockey analyst and co-host of the Coming In Hot Sens Podcast, Jason York, joins the guys (29:03) to talk about why Hughes' puck belongs in the Hall, the Ottawa Senators chasing for a playoff spot, who's attributed to their run, and the difference between the Buffalo Sabres' turnaround since firing GM Kevyn Adams vs. Jackets changing head coaches. The hour starts with Team USA's gold medal celebration spilling right into Washington, with the guys cracking up at the “worst place to be hungover” photo from the State of the Union scene. From there it's all Jack Hughes: the teeth, the new look, the “how is this the same kid?” vibe, and the question everyone has for tonight. Will Hughes actually play, and what kind of welcome is he about to get in Jersey? Plus, a full breakdown of the travel logistics, private jets, wheels up times, Teterboro, and whether the Devils and Sabres should've just thrown everybody on the same plane and called it common sense.
Mookie opens the show gloating about Arsenal F.C., we debate the true power of the Wooden Spoon, and then we get into the real chaos. Tarik Skubal is basically one-and-done for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, and we're not thrilled about it. Who fills the gap? Is Team USA already in trouble? And are robo-umps about to screw someone in a massive spot thanks to the ABS strike zone issue that players like Sal Frelick are pointing out? We fade the Colorado Rockies, Mike gets irrationally excited about the Cincinnati Reds, and we wrap up Olympic season with full Coach Lou Holtz energy that includes: – Curling gold drama – Lou pronouncing Tkachuk – A naked skeleton request – Lou getting left behind by Team USA – Lou reacting to Skubal bailing We also get into: – The UFL going full chaos mode with 4-point field goals, no punts past midfield, and no tush push – The NBA's latest ideas to “fix” tanking (it's not good) – Floyd Mayweather Jr. fighting Mike Tyson and Manny Pacquiao in 2026 like it's a time machine Plus beer recaps and whatever that ending was. Team USA wins Olympic Gold in hockey and if anyone can actually believe it, this seems to be dividing Americans. Jack Hughes delivered the Golden Goal and the celebration was wild. It involved a tribute to a fallen teammate, an awkward medal ceremony for the Canadians, the FBI Directory pounding Mich Ultras partying in the locker room and President Trump on the phone. Trump promised America would get tired of all the winning and if you see what liberals and their media are saying... it's true. They are sick of Trump and patriotic Americans winning. It was a tough Saturday for our college basketball teams, especially KU. Chiefs Receiver Hollywood Brown shares a really sad story about NFL player Rondale Moore who was found dead in a garage. A crazed gunman fixated on Epstein and Trump goes to Mar-a-Lago with a shotgun and a gas can. The left just keeps stoking the fire in crazy people to go try to get Trump... even if it kills them. Two KC area high schools make big news with protests gone wrong... this has to stop. And our Final Final is a Chiefs legend and a famous actor in a big time commercial.
