If you´ve ever wondered how the silence prior to start the Opening Movement is energized and about the experience of the brief but extreme moving moment between the end of the Final Movement and the first clap of the audience's applause in a performance, you won't dare to miss this episode. Euan Shields is a 25-year-old Japan-born American orchestral conductor and cellist, known for his emotionally charged performances and delightful technical skills. In this episode, the Assistant Conductor under Sir Mark Elder for the Hallé Orchestra and Music Director of the Hallé Youth Orchestra, talks about all the imaginary happening while standing on the podium and about the different experiences resulted from playing cello in an orchestra vs. conducting one. Listen this superb cellist and promising orchestral conductor talk about mentorship and the benefits of being brutally honest, why he exchanged words for feelings when marking his scores, how he prepares a performance as an assistance conductor and how he puts his conviction of music's transformational power to society in motion.

At the back row of the orchestra, usually three in number, sit the trombone section, but why three and how long have they been there? Tom Service reflects on their history and the ways in which they are employed. He looks back on over five hundred years of the story of the trombone and offers insight into the meaning of things such as 'Tower Music' and 'Stadtpfeifer'. Tom looks at the role of the trombone in religious music and in music for the theatre, and at its comparitively late arrival within the symphony orchestra, back in the final decades of the 18th Century. And there's a chance to enjoy some of the distinctive qualities that trombones offer to the orchestral music of Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, Shostakovich and Berg. This week's guest expert is the principal trombonist of the Halle Orchestra, Katy Jones.
The Possibility Club podcast: Practical Bravery - DIGITAL CONSCIOUSNESS! In this episode of The Possibility Club, we delve into the fabric of this modern narrative. The script is changing, the actors are evolving, and the stage is expanding. It's a realm where algorithms are the new editors, and data, the ink. Yet, amidst this digital choreography, where does the human touch reside? And more so, where is it headed? Author of 'The Media Business and Artificial Intelligence,' our guest's writings are more than just a dalliance with theories, they are a deep dive into the interplay between AI and media. His academic roles at St Hugh's College, Oxford, the Said Business School and at the National Film and Television School, look under the bonnet of the business of arts, culture, tech and entertainment. His current roles at UNICEF UK and The Halle Orchestra symbolise a narrative that looks beyond commercial metrics, but one serious about social change. How can we all navigate the expanse of media, technology, and social impact, maintaining a useful dance between ethics and innovation, between tradition and disruption? In this episode of The Possibility Club, Richard Freeman would like you to meet Dr Alex Connock. ---------- "An AI person could probably do a facsimile of your voice, and your video, and possibly imitate you. Synopsis Famous composers have been, on occasion, famous performers as well. Think of Bach on the organ, or Rachmaninoff on the piano. And if Mozart's father is to be believed, young Wolfgang could have Europe's finest violinist – if he had only practiced more. But how many famous composers can you name who played the bassoon? Well, the British composer Edward Elgar, for one. As a young musician in Worcester, played the bassoon in a wind quintet. While never becoming famous as a bassoonist, Elgar's love for and understanding of the instrument is evident in all his major orchestral works, and he counted one skilled player among his friends: this was Edwin F. James, the principal bassoonist of the London Symphony in Elgar's day. In 1910, while working on his big, extroverted, almost 50-minute violin concerto, Elgar tossed off a smaller, much shorter, and far more introverted work for bassoon and orchestra as a gift for James. Since Elgar was working on both pieces at the same time, if you're familiar with Elgar's Violin Concerto, Op. 61, you can't help but notice a familial resemblance to his 6-minute Romance for Bassoon and Orchestra, Op. 62. The Romance was first performed by Edwin F. James at a Herefordshire Orchestral Society concert conducted by the Elgar on today's date in 1911. Music Played in Today's Program Elgar (1857-1934) Romance for Bassoon and Orchestra, Op. 62 Graham Salvage, bassoon; Halle Orchestra; Mark Elder, conductor. Halle Elgar Edition HLL-7505

These are the last woods that an ancient track passes through on its rocky way up onto the flanks of Black Hill, Derbyshire. The last woods to catch the spring rains. Walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders bathe in its rich spacious atmosphere before ascending onto the exposed moorland that lies beyond. But there's nobody about now, it's five o'clock in the morning. Glorious emptiness, filled with spring rain and birds. A world that's all theirs, on Dawn Chorus Day 2022. The track fords a stream by a broken down gate mid-right of scene. Normally the stream is an ankle deep torrent but owing to a long dry spell its presence is lighter than usual. The rilling water can still be heard reflected by the countless newly sprouted leaves, that make this wood an intensely green place. The microphones, recording non-stop all night, are attached to the trunk of a tree. Centre of scene is the exact same spot that Carl Fuchs first cellist of the Halle Orchestra and member of the original Brodsky Quartet, wrote about in his memoires*. Whilst digging in the stream two passing walkers enquired of him whether the water was good to drink. After they'd refreshed themselves he overheard one of them say to the other as they trailed away, how helpful the labourer man had been. To be seen by others as not an eminent musician but as the ordinary man he felt himself to be, proved a significant moment in his life. So hear, at this same spot where that exchange took place a century ago, how the stream still flows, a hundred springs on. Time passing, in all its ordinariness, in all it's refreshingly uncluttered and restorative ordinariness. *Musical and other recollections of Carl Fuchs, Cellist. Published 1937, Sherratt and Hughes, St Ann's Press, Manchester.

High on a Derbyshire moor below the summit of Black Hill, between Disley and Whaley Bridge, there's an ancient trackway. It runs almost level across boggy ground with views over rough pastures and gritstone walls to a lone standing stone. After about half a mile the track descends sharply into a tree-lined dell. Nestled in amongst a wood, there's a small farmhouse mostly hidden from view. It was, more than a lifetime ago, in 1898 the home of Carl Fuchs, a distinguished cellist, who played in the Halle Orchestra and the Brodsky quartet. At the point where the gorse bushes are, where the path narrows and sinks below the gritstone walls, and the deep ruts get deeper, the traveller hears water. A babbling beck, waiting to cast its spell. A sonorous moorside stream that has to be forded, on tip toe, over exposed rocks. In his memoir, Carl Fuchs when working in the stream, once told travellers that the water was safe to drink. Clear, and from the mountain. Being within a natural cutting, overgrown with straggly trees, its sound is amplified. Shaped by the action of water over rocks, and conducted by gravity, the beck rills the air, as it has for centuries. The deep rocky pool into which the water tumbles, sings watery notes. Colourful, resonant, vibrant. We pushed through the undergrowth and left the microphones to record overnight, downstream of the pool. Time passes. Tiny flurries of rain fall onto the sheltering leaves. The beck flows mellifluously, down and away into the wide open valley to the right. The vastness is sometimes revealed by a passing plane, or a car on a distant road. The birds are asleep. Nocturnal things hold their silence. The beck casts its spell.

Richard was born in New Zealand and raised in a family of six boys and one girl. He studied in the US before embarking on a career playing the Bassoon for the Halle Orchestra, Manchester. It was here that he began his career in orchestral management which also took him to the Royal Northern College of Music and to the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra where for ten years he worked as general manager. Richard accepted the post of Managing Director of the Ulster Orchestra in February 2016 at a time when there were big questions hanging over the financing of the orchestra. Richard gives a fascinating insight into what it is like to manage so many creative and able people who have to work together in such a confined space. “Orchestras” he said “to be successful have to be “of the place””. His mission is to see that the UO is “of Northern Ireland”.
On Hearing the First Cuckoo in SpringFrederick DeliusHalle Orchestra; Sir John Barbirolli, conductorAvailable on Arkivmusic.com We all look for signs of spring. Some, such as daffodils and crocuses in bloom, are welcome. Others – the watery, itchy eyes from all that pollen, and the sound of your car hitting all those potholes – not so much. One of the good sounds of spring is birdsong. The song of the cuckoo is a particularly significant spring totem. Has been for centuries. There are all kinds of legends about hearing the first cuckoo of the year. Depending on where you are or what you’re doing, the first cuckoo’s song is supposed to be able to tell your fortune, including how many years you have left to live. We don’t know why the cuckoo has all that power. Maybe it’s because it’s a little bit mysterious. Cuckoos are easy to hear, but not very easy to spot. Frederick Delius accorded the cuckoo a special honor by writing a symphonic poem about it. Delius was born in England to German immigrant parents. He wrote this piece when he was living in France, and based some of the music on a folk song from Norway that Grieg had arranged. German roots, French residence, Norwegian tune – but when Delius adds them up, they turn into something that sounds very English. Listen for the cuckoo in this piece. You won’t even hear him coming, but when he arrives, it’ll be a nice surprise, like any other welcome sign of spring. John Barbirolli conducts the Halle Orchestra. Edward Gardner is the Music Director of English National Opera and about to become Principal Guest conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He talks to Norman Lebrecht about his career to date. Gardner was appointed to the post at ENO in 2007 while in his early 30s and began by conducting a new production of Britten's Death in Venice. He was born in Gloucester and began his musical life as a chorister at Gloucester Cathedral. He later went to Eton where he enjoyed the music making and education and then went to Cambridge where he says he enjoyed the conducting and performing that he did there rather than the more academic side of the course. The Royal Academy of Music followed but before leaving he was already working in the summer at the Salzburg Festival as a repetiteur encountering some of the leading conductors and operatic productions of the time. This experience has influenced some of his choices at ENO. He then worked with Mark Elder at the Halle Orchestra. So choral music and opera were both at the heart of his musical training. In 2004, before he was thirty, he was invited to be Music Director of Glyndebourne Touring Opera, an experience, he says which gave him the opportunity to conduct operas like La Boheme 20 times in different venues and acoustics around the UK. Since taking up the baton at ENO he has been involved with the planning of the company's repertoire and has conducted new productions of operas by Saariaho, Verdi, Bartok and Puccini. He talks about the challenges the company faces. How it has improved its image and work after a period of decline and argues with Norman about the continuance of the company's policy of performing operas in English. Producer Tony Cheevers.
