Vanavond kondigt Apple de nieuwe iPhone 15 aan. De eerste lichting iPhones kwam tot nu toe altijd uit China, waarna andere landen zoals India en Vietnam aanhaakten met de productie. Dit jaar moet China die eerste iPhones voor het eerst delen met India.  Die verandering lijkt vooral zijn oorzaak te hebben bij de steeds verslechterde relatie tussen China en Apple. Mede door de handelsoorlog die woedt tussen de VS en China, maar ook door het onderlinge wantrouwen in data-uitwisseling tussen de grootmachten.  Apple zet langzaam steeds meer stappen om de productie van haar producten te verdelen over meerdere landen. Dat is belangrijk om niet afhankelijk te zijn van China, dat zomaar de druk kan opvoeren in de handelsoorlog. India lijkt daar de vruchten van te plukken en wordt voor steeds meer productionele taken ingezet. The rise and fall of Nokia's mobile phone business has been well documented. Once dominant in the feature-phone era, the Finnish company was caught flat-footed by the launch of Apple's iPhone and Google's Android. The acquisition of Nokia's handset business by Microsoft – desperate at the time for its Windows Phone operating system to be a meaningful third player in smartphone software and also desperate for Nokia not to embrace Google's Android – went awry. Eventually, Microsoft exited the phone business entirely, selling the phone business back to Nokia (whose main business is selling telecommunications gear to network operators), writing off billions of dollars in the process, and leaving the mobile OS market as a virtual duopoly controlled by Apple and Google. But the Nokia phone brand never went away. After the Microsoft collapse, a team ex-Nokia executives founded HMD Global, a Chinese-Finnish phone maker, and licensed the Nokia brand name to continue building smartphones – this time running Android. Amazon announced on February 24 that it will integrate its logistics network and SmartCommerce, a suite of SaaS products built on Amazon Web Services, with the government of India-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). Ericsson has announced the largest layoff in the telecom sector in the current economic slowdown, Reuters reports. Also in this brief, Nokia has announced the G22 – a smartphone with a backplate made from recycled plastic that can be removed easily for DIY repairs; and the latest on how India is stepping up its semiconductor efforts. Notes: Amazon will integrate its logistics network and SmartCommerce, a suite of SaaS products built on Amazon Web Services, with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), the open networks-based ecommerce protocols backed by the Indian government. “This will be Amazon's initial collaboration with ONDC as we continue to explore other potential opportunities for stronger integration between the two in future,” the company said in a press release on Feb. 24. In some smartphone news, Nokia has designed one of its next phones to make it easy for repairs, with a design that harkens back to the early years of mobile phones. The Nokia G22, developed by Finnish manufacturer HMD Global, is a standard smartphone with a 6.5-inch screen and a 50-megapixel main camera, but it's the phone's outer shell and insides that make it special, CNBC reports. The handset includes a recyclable plastic back which can be easily removed to swap out broken components, according to CNBC. With tools and repair guides from hardware repair advocacy firm iFixit, a user can remove and replace the phone's cover, battery, screen and charging port. More on Scandinavia, Telecom equipment maker Ericsson will lay off 8,500 employees globally as part of its plan to cut costs, Reuters reported on Feb. 24, citing a memo sent to employees and seen by the news agency. While technology companies such as Microsoft, Meta and Google have laid off tens of thousands of employees citing economic conditions, Ericsson's move would be the largest layoff to hit the telecoms industry, according to Reuters. In some semiconductor industry news, India's minister of state for electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar said last week that India Semiconductor Research Centre (ISRC), a private, industry-led research centre, will soon be launched and the existing Semiconductor Laboratory is being modernised and pivoted into a research fab that will be co-located with the ISRC. The minister was speaking at the opening of the second Semicon India FutureDESIGN Roadshow, on Feb. 24, in Bengaluru. The Government plans to introduce an educational curriculum as part of the Future Skills programme, Chandrasekhar said. “It has been developed in collaboration with industry experts and academics. A large number of colleges will have new degrees, new electives, and new certification programs in VLSI.” “We are actively working with fab companies to create on-the-job training type of internships for students in the semiconductor space,” he said, according to a government press release.

This week it's all about Microsoft, with the company unveiling a slew of shiny new Surface products in the lead-up to the release of Windows 11. HMD Global also made a play in the affordable 5G phone space – with the Nokia G50 and iOS 15 is finally making its way to users' iPhones, but is it any good? Wednesday saw Microsoft's Panos Panay excitedly zip around an army of new Surface hardware; from the somersaulting Surface Laptop Studio to the powerful new Surface Pro 8, while we were also introduced to timely refreshes of the company's Surface Go and Surface Pro X 2-in-1s. The oddball Surface Duo also got a sequel in the Surface Duo 2, which offers up better cameras, beefier performance (and 5G) – led by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset – and a new, curvier design that means you can few aspects like notifications and battery level while the Duo 2 is closed. In light of the iPhone 13's launch, Apple also rolled out the official release of iOS 15 to the masses, complete with FaceTime support on Android and Windows, Notification Summary and (among numerous other features) new portrait mode options – even in third-party apps. Lastly, HMD Global continues doing what it does best - releasing low-cost Nokia-branded Android phones that promise a clean design, lightly tweaked user experience, and long-term OS and security updates. The main difference with the new Nokia G50 is that it's the first of the company's 5G-capable phones to come in at a budget asking price, making it one of the only offerings not from a Chinese phone maker; whether it'll find success, however, is another matter. UU. el próximo mes. El XR20 de 550 dólares, es el teléfono más caro de la cartera actualizada de Nokia. Se afirma que el XR20, que cuenta con especificaciones sólidas y una durabilidad potencialmente mejor que otros teléfonos de gama media, es el primer teléfono “a prueba de vida” de la compañía. El XR20 tiene una pantalla Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, que se dice que es cuatro veces más resistente a los arañazos que la pantalla de un teléfono inteligente típico, y un cuerpo que, según HMD, puede soportar caídas de hasta dos metros sin una carcasa. Whatever you think of Nokia's re-introduction of the legendary 3310 device, you've got to hand it to HMD Global for completely owning Mobile World Congress 2017 in terms of capturing headlines. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to recall any other major announcement made at the world's premier mobile showcase this year. He shares one that can save you some money in the long term. MWC 2017 We are a few days from Mobile World Congress 2017, which will run from Feb 27 to Mar 2 in Barcelona. As you know this is one of the biggest mobile device events that is held every year.  What can we expect? The focus will be on trends within mobility - IoT, Chatbots, Digital Payment and Retail banking technology. Also, we can expect TCL BlackBerry to announcement the BlackBerry Mercury, LG to showcase its G6, HMD Global to promote the Nokia lines of phones, Moto, Lenovo, Samsung and Sony will also feature their new phones. Personal Cloud Storage It is estimated that by the year 2020 there will be over 2.3 billion personal cloud storage consumers or users. Most today are using the mainstream - cloud services from companies like Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Dropbox. But, security is a concern for many. How private and secure are my docs, files, pics, videos on a cloud server somewhere I don’t even know? Hear about a product that can be housed in your own home that can provide the service as cloud storage. I like this service because in the long term it is a cheaper means of buying cloud storage service, also it is faster than the other cloud services. And best reason is you can literally store all your data at home, and not in a server in some unknown location - so your security and privacy are intact. Google Sheets Update In our office, we use Google Sheets to collaborate with remote staff, if you use Google Sheets then you will be happy to know like us that Google has made some updates to this service. One of the most important new features is the ability to rotate text, which allows users to fit long header names into thin columns or fit more text on a single screen. The new option is available in Sheets by heading to Format / Text rotation. Also, accounting number formats, which enables Sheets users to read budgets, expense reports, as well as other spreadsheets featuring monetary amounts much easier. You can access this feature from within the app at Format / Number / Accounting. Google also confirmed support for using a mouse with the Sheets for Android has been implemented too, as well as the ability to view and select existing custom colours in the app. iOS users got some love too, as Google added the ability to drag and drop rows and columns in the Sheets for the iOS app. The new update allows Sheets users to choose from more border styles, including various thickness and double borders.
