Will I ever get over being homesick? That is a question most college students will surely relate to! It will also resonate with many adults who have moved away to a new place. My daughter, Faith, is in college, and she joins me to discuss whether or not people who move away from home ever stop feeling homesick. We dive into what it means to feel homesick, different types of homesickness, and how things change over time. Neither Faith nor I know if it is possible to overcome feelings of homesickness fully. However, we know it is possible to get over it, figure out how to manage it, and move on when it comes up. What does it mean to be homesick? Even when things are going very well for her academically and socially, Faith still feels upset about her parents being far away. For her, homesickness is also about no longer having anyone else to do all the banal tasks that adults have to do. Different types of homesickness There are many different types of homesickness. Moving to an unfamiliar place can make some of us feel a little insecure, while others, regardless of how old they are, miss having someone to care for them when they are feeling down or anxious, or get sick. The pandemic Faith feels that being locked down during the pandemic took away some of the time she needed to pull away from her family after high school, make a life for herself, and learn how to solve her own problems. Leaving part of ourselves behind For some of us, no matter how old we are, it will always feel like we have left a piece of ourselves behind when we move to a new environment. Things we miss about being home It can take some time for a new place to feel like home. Sometimes, we miss just popping in to see our parents or siblings. Or we may miss getting a hug from them when something good or bad happens to us. Where is home, and what is homesickness? Home is where we spend our most important times and wherever our precious belongings are. Homesickness is what we feel and who and what we miss in a given moment. Managing feelings of homesickness Feelings of homesickness can be related to many different things. To overcome them, we must first identify what they mean to us. Then we can either replicate whatever we are missing or let go of those things and learn to accept our new situation. I recently finished watching the TV show Shrinking and found it both fun and enjoyable! It is on Apple TV and has half the same writers as Ted Lasso. It is about three doctors working in a counseling practice who all go a bit crazy at times, break rules, and cross ethical boundaries. The cast is amazing, the characters are hilarious, and the show satisfied me to the end! Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid is available on Amazon. Even though I am not an audiobook person, I recently listened to the audiobook version and found it very well cast and read. In fact, it was just like listening to a movie, and I loved it! The show came out while I was listening to the book, and I found that the show remains true to the essence of the book. Faith also enjoyed the book and the show for various reasons. She liked how the show was shot like a documentary and that Daisy Jones was portrayed realistically as a rock star from the 1970s. She enjoyed the music because the actors play the instruments and sing the songs. Faith also loved how the book was written as if you're reading interviews with the band. Faith and I had the most delicious, light, and lovely smoothies from the River Birch Cafe in Morgantown, West Virginia. If you go there, ask for the Speak To The Management smoothie! Faith recommends buying a little tumbler cup with a straw from Big Lots for $5 for your next takeaway coffee. She loves it because it is very sparkly with lots of gemstones all over it, and it is also easy to clean! Faith and I are both obsessive and compulsive about music! Faith recently introduced me to Tyler Childers, a musician from Kentucky who plays music with an Appalachian sound, with a similar vibe to that of Chris Stapleton. Tyler Childers's music is beautiful and lyrical. It is more folksy than country. Faith especially loves his 2017 album, Purgatory, and his song Charleston Girl. A podcast about smells? Well…. yeah. In this episode, host Wil Fulton discovers how scent and travel combine to create some of our longest lasting memories. Along the way, he speaks with: visually impaired travel writer Tony Giles on how scent helps him build a picture of the places he visits, and how it often guides him to points of interest; the General Manager of Homesick Candles, on bottling the smells of cities; and artist Dr. Kate McLean, who developed a notable method to map scents, visually. All of this concludes with Wil taking his own "scent walk" through New York City, which is very hit-or-miss, to be honest. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

Sam Parr (@TheSamParr), Shaan Puri (@ShaanVP) and David Segal (@_davidsegal) discuss:David’s backgroundAt 26, David teams up with his 70-something-year-old cousin, Herschel Segal, to start DAVIDsTEA.Herschel had made his fortune in Canada’s fashion industry. Previously Davis was helping his Herschel make small investments. Together they saw an opportunity to grow a tea brand, where David led and Herschel investedHe made his first million when a Boston PE firm (Highland Capital) made an investment in DAVIDsTEA.When the company went public it was doing $30m in EBITDA. He didn't want to sell shares at the time, but needed to in order to make the IPO big enough. He eventually left the business and sold his shares because of management issues. He sold at an average of $14 a share.Today he runs a few businesses. One of which is a restaurant where he is trying to mix the best of ghost kitchens with a sitdown restaurantDavid is currently trying to get back in the tea game. He sees an opportunity to make tea good, and cool again. Tea penetration is tiny in NA, so there is a lot of room to grow. With his new brand he wants to do DTC business by keeping tea simple, but widening its appeal.Previous to DAVIDsTEA, he ran a software business. It was essentially an abandoned cart business but for real life.BrainstormIdea: good video for online meetings is like what a nice Italian suit was in the 80s. It shows professionalism and class. Sam mentions he is willing to pay thousands to have someone create a turnkey video conference setup for him. He thinks this could be a great business opportunity.Made Renovation (https://www.maderenovation.com/ founded by Roger Dickey) offers turnkey bathrooms. The idea is clients can select from a limited amount of pre-selected styles. Shaan suggests applying this same idea to video conferencing setups.Idea: Uber for contractors. David suggests it’s hard finding reliable contractors, and there may be space for a company that can help organize the market better.Modsy: For $500 per room, Modsy provides an on-demand interior designer. They will create a layout and make suggestions for furniture to use.The guys discuss several “experts on-demand” companies. Companies like Intro.co, GLGinsights.com, Clarity.fm & Officehours.com all do similar things in different ways: connect users with experts on a variety of topics.Idea: Decommoditizing everyday stuff. By taking an everyday item and adding a unique element to it, you can charge more and differentiate an otherwise commodity. David brings up Duraflame. Duraflame is a fast lighting fire log. The company does 9 figures in revenue but hasn’t been innovated upon in years. Homesick Candles successfully innovated on candles by adding regional scents and creating a differentiated product. Eric Ryan built his career doing this with Method, Olly, and Welly.Idea: Firelogs with scents. Decommoditizing a boring product like fire logs with a viral and catchy twist.Idea: “...For dummies 2.0”. The “...For Dummies” were a popular series of books educating anyone on any topic. Both David and Shaan are bullish on doing the same for complex modern topics like blockchain or NFT. But doing so through viral videos.Idea: Using stores as showrooms. David nearly started a company just like this. It’s a massive opportunity for whoever can figure out how to make use of retail space in a way that makes sense in the ecom age. From the Simplr studios in San Francisco, this is your daily briefing.IntroductionWith your Retail E-Commerce Briefing for today, Friday, November 29th, I'm Vincent Phamvan.REI is choosing to Opt Outside on one of the biggest shopping days of the year. Instead of taking part in the shopping craze, the retailer has shut its doors and is encouraging employees and customers to get outside.First, here are some retail headlines.Dunkin' and Homesick Candles Partner Up On Limited Edition CandlesDunkin’ has partnered with Homesick Candles to make three limited-edition candles for the holidays: Old-Fashioned Donuts, Original Blend Coffee, and Peppermint Mocha Coffee. Dunkin’s director of strategic partnerships said that candles make sense for the brand because people can bring the smell of doughnuts home with them. Homesick and Dunkin’ started working together in early 2019 with the expectation of releasing candles during the holiday season. Homesick isn’t a stranger to collaborating with companies. Earlier this year, the candle company partnered with Tinder to create a Single Not Sorry candle.Piterest Debuts “Pintrest Shop”Pinterest is debuting Pinterest Shop. The online marketplace showcases a number of smaller merchants who sell products on the platform. The rollout of the new feature is timed before Small Business Saturday, an annual occasion encouraging consumers to support small and local businesses during the holidays. According to a statement, Pinterest plans to update the Pinterest Shop account with even more products from small businesses.Allbirds Co-Founder Calls Out AmazonAllbirds co-founder, Joey Zwillinger, called out Amazon for copying a pair of their popular environmentally-friendly sneakers. Zwillinger wrote, “We are flattered at the similarities that your private label shoe shares with ours, but hoped the commonalities would include these environmentally-friendly materials as well.” Allbirds is the latest brand to take a shot at Amazon, with Williams-Sonoma suing the retail giant last year over a strikingly similar chair to one its West Elm brand sells. Nike also recently stopped selling on the marketplace to have a more direct relationship with its customers.REI Opts Out Of Black Friday To Go OutsideBlack Friday is one of the biggest shopping days of the year. One retailer though is opting out of the shopping craze today. For the fifth year, REI is shutting its doors on Black Friday. Instead, the retailer is encouraging more people to go outside. As part of its Opt Outside initiative, REI won’t also won’t process online payments, but will pay its 13,000 employees. This year, the company is taking its Opt Outside initiative to a new level.REI is asking its employees and 18 million members to “opt to act” and join a nationwide clean-up effort. Locations of environmental clean-ups are listed on the company’s website. CEO, Eric Artz said, “We’re still going to go outside and play – but this time we’re bringing our work gloves. And we’re inviting you to join us...It’s time to fight for life outdoors – and life on this planet.”REI started its opt outside initiative in 2015 and has been working toward zero-waste operations and challenging the industry to eliminate unnecessary packaging. Items will include BIrchbox subscription gift cards, limited edition travel-themed Birchbox Beauty and Birchbox Grooming boxes. The Birchbox shop-in-shops will be available in Walgreens stores in 44 states beginning this Friday and will run through the end of December. Costco / Instacart Testing Free One-Hour Prescription DeliveryCostco and Instacart are teaming up to test free one-hour prescription delivery. The pilot program is limited to California and Washington and includes delivery to a Costco member’s home or office. The pilot comes at a time when many of the largest retailers are exploring the $300 billion dollar pharmacy market. The move could help Costco compete with retailers like Amazon and Walmart, who have both dabbled in prescription delivery. Amazon made its first steps into the space in 2018 when it purchased PillPack while Walmart offers mail-order delivery in some areas. Bow & Drape Acquired By Win Brands GroupOnline women’s retailer, Bow & Drape, announced it has been acquired by e-commerce holding company, Win Brands Group. Bow & Drape will join a growing portfolio that includes Homesick Candles and Stowaway Cosmetics. Founded in 2012, Bow & Drape has attracted celebrity customers like Serena Williams and Reese Witherspoon and sells its customizable apparel and accessories online and at stores like Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s. It has also dabbled with various partnerships, including setting up shop at SoulCycle to let women customize shirts before their workout. However, given the seasonal nature of the business, it’s struggled to finance new inventory and its cash pile gets thin when it places orders for the holidays according to Pagano. She said the acquisition will give her access to a larger balance sheet, plus assistance with marketing and distribution. The acquisition could be a sign of what’s to come. With the amount of online retailers growing, competition in the space has driven online advertising rates up, making it more difficult to generate profits or experience the high growth rates wanted by investors. Win Brands Group has purchased two e-commerce companies and is seeking to acquire as many as 25 more brands, each with revenue between $5 and $50 million dollars by 2025. It’s betting it can help online brands compete in a crowded space. The founder and CEO of Win Brands said, “We’re not trying to grow these businesses to $1 billion businesses. But we do want to take these brands that are special and unique, bring them to a certain audience and grow them to their natural size and scale,”.ClosingDon’t forget, Simplr can help you scale up for the holidays with 24/7 customer service support.
