“If you're sitting on a board, you're a member of the executive leadership team…You need to make sure you're stepping back and understanding geopolitical risk, social, cultural risk, legal, regulatory, risk, activism. What are the activists looking at?... Who are the key stakeholders that you need to be aware of so that you can make sure that you are tracking those risk areas and, and their relevance to your company and how you need to be responding to those…You want to be proactive. “  Tara Giunta on Electric Ladies Podcast You might have heard about the Securities and Exchange Commission's final climate risk disclosure rules. All that destruction you see in the news from hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, floods and droughts has real financial implications – that's why investors have been demanding the SEC require better reporting on climate risk. What do they really mean? Listen to Tara Giunta, Global Co-Chair of ESG & Sustainable Finance Practice at mega law firm Paul Hastings to find out, in simple English, in this fascinating discussion with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson. They also share insightful career advice. You'll hear about: What exactly do the SEC climate risk disclosure rules require companies to disclose? What companies nationally are affected by the new California climate risk disclosure laws? What impact will the legal challenges really have on the SEC rules and California laws? How should senior management teams and boards of directors prepare and respond to them? Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “You need to be looking 360 in terms of industry, what's developing, what's coming down the pike from a technology standpoint, from a risk standpoint. You should be educating yourself constantly and stretching yourself to go into a new area. Don't just be content to sit and do the same thing….Push yourself to do something a little different, stretch…because that broadens you as a professional, first of all. It's just so much more interesting than doing the same thing every day. But, it also makes you a better professional… because you are seeing things that the other people who are just doing the same old, same old, aren't necessarily seeing.” Tara Giunta on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here. “Regulation can really be a catalyst for transformation, for business transformation, because this is so much more than a disclosure and compliance exercise. “When you think about the mechanisms, the infrastructure, the data that will emerge from instituting more discipline and rigor around these disclosure objectives, (it) is absolutely critical to surface more timely where risk disruption can emerge. They give insight into choices that can be made.” Kristen Sullivan on Electric Ladies Podcast   The SEC released its final climate risk disclosure rules after a two year process of collecting thousands of public comments, hearing from investors and conducting analysis. These rules have the potential to be transformative because they require companies to disclose verified data about the climate impact on their bottom line, and on how their company affects climate change risk as well. What does it mean? Listen to Kristen Sullivan, Deloitte Audit Partner, who leads the firm's sustainability practice, and Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson as they decipher these new rules – and the opportunities they reveal. You'll hear: What the SEC is asking companies to disclose verified data on, and why. How companies could benefit from identifying this data and seeing its impact on their business. Where this climate disclosure data might reveal opportunities that could be transformative for them. How to prepare, when to start (now), and how to structure your preparation. Plus, insightful career advice “Whether you're a marketing leader, whether you're a talent leader, a human resources leader, supply chain, finance, investor relations, legal, pick your favorite area of the business, really introducing a climate lens to what you do in your day job and really becoming a champion across your part of the organization. It opens up windows. We participate in meetings with clients all the time where parts of the organization come together that have never really had an opportunity or a remit to collaborate in certain areas. And so I think there's just a tremendous opportunity to bring sort of a tested set of skills, education, activities …to really become a change maker within your organization, a champion within your organization to drive this integration.” Kristen Sullivan on Electric Ladies podcast   Read Joan's Forbes article about the SEC climate risk disclosure rules and finding hidden business value here.   You'll also want to listen to: (some might be recorded under our previous name, Green Connections Radio) Kristen Sullivan, Deloitte, previous appearance on ELP about ESG tracking and its value Kristina Wyatt, Chief Sustainability Officer and Deputy General Counsel, Persefoni, and former head of the SEC Task Force developing the proposed climate risk disclosure rules. “Much of our infrastructure isn't built to withstand certain kinds of flooding or certain levels of heat. And yet, as the climate changes, so many of the things… that we did know in a world with a stable climate, those are now being upended. And all of that affects costs fundamentally… So, we need to transition to net zero…The three pieces of (federal) legislation are all about investing in America and making sure that from the innovation to commercialization pipeline, we are helping those goods get to market at scale, at prices consumers can afford.” Heather Boushey on Electric Ladies Podcast Climate change affects the entire economy, especially our infrastructure, like transportation, energy and electric power systems, buildings, manufacturing, etc. and every one of us, from consumers to businesses to investors, to education etc. Every sector, every community, every income bracket. NOAA calculated it's already caused almost $3 trillion in damages. The Biden administration signed three massive bills into law with Congress's help that address this pivot to a net zero economy and upgrading our infrastructure. Listen to Heather Boushey, Member of the White House Council of Economic Advisors and Chief Economist of the Invest in America Cabinet, in this exclusive and rare interview by Joan Michelson on Electric Ladies Podcast explain how we can economically do this transition and how this federal funding reduces our risks and costs to do, while also expediting this transition to help avert even far worse effects of climate change.  You'll hear: How climate change affects the economy, and key sectors specifically. “72% of CEOs say that innovation is one of their top three priorities. And close to 70% of them say they have a hard time driving innovation in their organization. I would posit, having been in there and been an intrapreneur myself, that the problem is they hire the wrong people. They hire for what I call mediocrity, they hire based on fit. And they hire based on past experience doing exactly what they want that person to do. And that's not where you get innovation. Innovation comes from connecting different dots and connecting dots differently.” Joan Michelson on Lesley Michaels show “Women We Should Know” This week's episode is a tribute to a brilliant woman who shined the spotlight on “Women We Should Know” with her podcast of that name, and by helping them publish important books. Lesley passed away unexpectedly recently, and we honor her life by airing her interview with our host, Joan Michelson on Lesley's Show. Lesley Michaels climbed the corporate ladder in the male-dominated oil and gas industry, and then channeled her frustration with how women didn't help other women at the time, into a crusade to lift up other women. Last year, she published her own book, “On the Shoulders of Mighty Women: A Modern Feminist's Guide to an Equitable, Diverse World.” Listen to Lesley interview Joan and you'll hear Lesley's magical gift for supporting women – and her own insights as well as Joan's. You'll hear: Why and how to hire creative, innovative people. Why women are natural innovators Joan's stories of driving innovation in Corporate America Lesley's insightful questions Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “You're going to change direction like four times in your career. Maybe eight, maybe 12… I've worked in different industries. So when you have a functional skill, you can be in different industries. And you will grow, you will evolve. You'll reach a point where it's like, okay, so been there, done that. I want to do something else now. That's okay. Be in tune with that and understand that. As one of my guests said on my show, don't just go for a dream that you've always had, because you might have outgrown that dream now. “What I'm hearing is, how do we go faster? How do we transform the key industries that are driving emissions now? And, that can be the solutions to our climate crisis, to our biodiversity crisis. They're really seeking what are the strategies, where should they be going strategically to shift capital, to shift their operations?...I'm seeing is a great eagerness to learn to act, uh, far ahead of the global targets by governments. So working with companies, working with, uh, local and regional and state governments, um, working with innovators to large corporates. Uh, what I'm hearing is how do we go faster and how do we do it in a way that is truly credible?” Aimee Christensen on Electric Ladies Podcast Climate change affects the entire economy – every sector – and therefore, any solution requires a multi-sector, multidimensional approach. But how do those work exactly in real life? What's working? Aimee Christensen, CEO of Christensen Global and Founder/CEO of the Sun Valley Forum, has been collaborating with top leaders across sectors in this work every day for 30 years, making the hard choices, running the numbers, identifying financial products and metrics. Listen to Aimee on Electric Ladies Podcast help us make sense of these strategies in this enlightening interview with host Joan Michelson.  You'll hear: How to build successful public-private partnerships. How to align financial assets with growing a climate positive economy. What impact new federal funding, ESG reporting and climate disclosure rules will have. What corporates are doing to transition to net zero operations and why. Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “Something that I've tried to do in my career that's been important has been to trust my gut and to be a truth teller….People are looking for community, so even if you think you might be the only one who's raising this issue,…you will find your people. And if you don't speak your truth, if you don't ask the hard question, you won't find the people who are looking to align with that aggressive leadership and trust your gut on that. So trust your gut, whether it's about a new job, about a direction we need to be going in, even if it feels a little bit lonely, because… You'll be proven. People will find you and want to collaborate with you.” Aimee Christensen on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here too. Investing In Companies For Social Impact - Meredith Shields, Citi Impact Fund “We have an allocated pool of capital that we are investing in early stage startups that are solving some of the world's most critical challenges. And…we care just as much about the financial success of the company as we do the impact that that company is going to make on the world. When I say impact… we think about that in two parts. One, who is running this company? Can we deploy more capital into diverse founders, meaning women, people of color, who have traditionally not received the investment capital that's warranted? And the other impact lens that we take is what we would define as ‘thematic impact,' which means, what social problems are we solving?...And again, we care about that just as much, if not more than the financial return.” Meredith Shields on Electric Ladies Podcast To solve the climate and equity crises, we need funders who are willing to back innovative – aka risky – ventures by people who come from different backgrounds with different perspectives. Some big companies are stepping up with venture funds and the like. One of them is Citi Impact Fund, which provides capital for early stage companies by a range of traditionally underserved founders whose companies are seeking to make a positive social impact. Listen to the head of that Fund, Meredith Shields, explain how they work and what they invest in – and much more – on Electric Ladies Podcast in this value-packed interview with host Joan Michelson.  You'll hear: How Citi Impact Fund defines “impact” – and how it fits in their focus. Tips for what to look for in investors for your entity – and why What impact she thinks the SEC's new climate risk disclosure rules mean. What makes up the best board of directors to maximize today's marketplace. Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “My advice is to get really clear about what you're good at and what your functional skillset is, and what your managerial and or leadership skillset is. And then if you want to make a difference, think about where that's needed….As the world has changed and as this notion of impact has changed, there've become more opportunities to use my skillset in different ways, like many different ways that didn't exist previously. But I think you have to be open to that as a concept. And so just again, getting really clear on what are you good at and is that portable? And many, many things are in lots of different arenas.” Meredith Shields on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here too. “The impact investing we focused on, and tried to bring tools and resources together for, really represents areas of investing where you're looking for both a financial return and a social return through the investments that you make. So, it's really that simple. It's asking the question of, ‘is there some kind of social return that's exceptional or different in this investment versus the normal investments I would make?'…I like to remind everyone that every investment has impact. The question is what impact does it have?” Jean Case on Electric Ladies Podcast Impact and ESG (environment, social, governance) investing are often confused, and yet today, especially as the Securities and Exchange Commission finalizes its climate risk disclosure rules, the investment community is paying a lot more attention to the impact of investment decisions on the environment and all stakeholders. One of the people who has been at the forefront of using investment funding to make a positive impact is Jean Case, CEO of the Case Foundation, chair of the National Geographic Society board, author of the best-selling book, “Be Fearless,” and former SVP of AOL. Listen to Jean Case on Electric Ladies Podcast help us make sense of these strategies in this engaging interview with host Joan Michelson.  You'll hear: How she and the Case Foundation see the differences in impact investing vs. ESG investing. How ESG investing is really about minimizing risk as well as maximizing return, and why climate risk is financial. What impact she thinks the SEC's new climate risk disclosure rules will have. What the boards of directors of the future will do and how they will need to adapt structurally to a changing economy and marketplace Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “Ladies, you need to own it….And by owning it, I mean, bring confidence that you've got what it takes. Own things that will make you a more profitable, build wealth for yourself, own that.…it's hard for a lot of us to do the things that we think we naturally can't be good at….(but) You can be trained, you can learn into almost anything. I see so many really capable, smart, awesome women and they just really need to own that.” Jean Case on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here too. Embracing a more fearless approach, even in a pandemic   When Jean Case published her book, Be Fearless: 5 Principles for a Life of Breakthroughs and Purpose five years ago, she had no idea that we were about to experience a life-altering global pandemic—and she certainly didn’t anticipate that the book’s principles would remain relevant during such a crisis. But, as she discussed with Women on the Move host Sam Saperstein, that’s exactly what happened. Case’s book centers on five principles of a fearless approach to change and growth: making big bets; being bold in taking risks; making failure matter; reaching beyond your bubble; and letting urgency conquer fear. And as Case, who’s also CEO of the Case Impact Network, the Case Foundation and chairman of National Geographic Society, told Saperstein, she was a little uncomfortable in the beginning of COVID-19 to have a book about being fearless at a time when we all needed to take safety measures. “But obviously the kind of fearlessness that I talk about in the book is the fearlessness that looks past what's right in front of you and sees a different future, and clearly that's what we've needed in this last year,” she said.   Big risks, big bets At the core of Case’s advice to innovators is the idea of starting where you are. “What is not well understood about entrepreneurs, for instance, is that in most cases they’re really solving a problem when they start a new company,” she says. “And in most instances it’s a problem that they’ve either dealt with, or been up close to. And it turns out that’s universal for change makers around the world.” Once you’ve envisioned a solution to a need that’s before you, you often need to take a big risk and make a big bet to put that vision into practice. In Case’s own life, her big risk and her big bet came in the early days of the internet, when she had a dream job shepherding the new “online services” vision at corporate giant GE. But when a tiny start-up came calling, she was interested in joining an organization with risk-taking in its DNA. Against the advice of horrified friends, she joined the start-up, which later became AOL.   Silver linings of the COVID era The current pandemic has impacted several areas of life over the past year—not the least of which is people’s willingness and ability to take big risks and make big bets. But Case says the pandemic has led to great innovation as well: she tells the story of an emergency-room doctor struggling with a lack of PPE who devised a process so that 80,000 masks a day could be sanitized and reused. And pandemic life has provided fertile ground for another of Case’s priorities: advancing equity and inclusion, especially amongst women. Amidst research showing that organizations with diverse teams outperform those without, today’s virtual meetings are more diverse than when people had to physically meet in an office. She noted a very specific reason why female entrepreneurs are benefiting from the propensity to virtual meetings: “There's a very sad narrative through the years as entrepreneurs sit in front of investors, they get hit on, they have to put up with a lot . . Well, it's a little harder to do that over Zoom.”   Looking forward Case continues to advocate for diversity and inclusion in her roles at both the Case Foundation and the National Geographic Society. When she became chair at National Geographic, the organization’s explorer class was more than 80 percent male; today it’s 51 percent female. At the Case Foundation she continues to both invest in and champion organizations that strive to give women opportunities.  She’s currently putting her passion to work as co-chair of the American Women's History Initiative at the Smithsonian Institution. “This initiative sets out with one goal in mind, and that is to make sure we are adequately capturing the unbelievable contributions and achievements of women through time in America,” she said. “It is a very intentional effort to open up the archives and look across fields and say, where were the contributions of women left on the cutting room floor?” To Case, it’s an extension of her life’s work: recognizing when women have been fearless in the past is a step toward encouraging women to be fearless today.

Steve Case was the co-founder and CEO of AOL, the largest Internet company at the time, which he took public and eventually merged with Time Warner. Today he is the CEO of Revolution, an investment firm which invests in visionary entrepreneurs focused on building long lasting businesses.  He is also the Chairman of the Case Foundation and an author with a New York Times bestselling book called The Third Wave: An Entrepreneur's Vision of the Future.   Some interesting insights from this episode: There were much more heavily capitalized competitors but Steve decided that while the other online services were focusing on content and commerce, he would focus AOL more on community which ended up being the killer app that drove its success. While you're scaling, vision and strategy are important but the people are the most important thing to get right. You need to get the right people on the bus and in the right seats and going in the right direction. AOL was by no means an overnight success. It took almost a decade to get to the first million subscribers.  The $350 billion mega merger of AOL and Time Warner is the biggest merger in history. During the third wave of the Internet, the 3 “P's” are going to be most critical for success: partnerships, policy and perseverance. The product-led founder archetype who found success with viral apps during the second wave won't be adequate in the third wave. “Vision without execution is hallucination.” – Thomas Edison “Excellence is striving to do something important and doing it successfully and doing it well.”

Jean’s book weaves together stories about ordinary people who set out to change the world.   While reading her book and speaking with her today, Caroline learned that fearlessness is not just about quitting your job and taking a massive leap of faith; there are many ways to be fearless every day and make an impact, simply by deciding to do so. Hello, listeners, and happy Thanksgiving to those of you in America! Welcome back to Tech Forward. This week, I'm rebroadcasting an early episode for newer listeners. Earlier this year, I spoke with Allie Burns, Managing Director at Village Capital. This global venture capital firm wants to build bridges for entrepreneurs looking to create an inclusive and sustainable world. Having worked with Revolution, the Case Foundation, AOL, Atlas Venture and more, Allie honed over the years a passion for working with young and emerging technologies. We discussed Village Capital’s unique model and goal to broaden access to capital worldwide, and to close the wealth gap for founders from underrepresented backgrounds. Village Capital is on a mission to reinvent the venture capital system in such a way as to truly back the entrepreneurs of the future. “The work we do is united by the principle of getting more capital to more people in more places, to solve the significant challenges in environmental stability and economic inequality.” Seeing as how 75% of venture capital goes to only 3 US states, and most of that to white men, there’s room for significant improvement. Village Capital deliberately sources and recruits entrepreneurs outside of the dominant geographies, both within the US and worldwide at their offices in Mexico City, Nairobi, and India. Village Capital operates with a community based support model, where cohorts of 10-12 entrepreneurs share information and constructive criticism with each other. The peer evaluation method is an attempt to flip the current power dynamic: at the end of the 3 month program, the cohort selects which among them will receive investment from Village Capital’s own fund. The model also connects these entrepreneurs with mentors in order to build a common language on both sides of the table. “If entrepreneurs can think like investors and speak to them in a way they’re more receptive to, we’ll have better matchmaking between investors and entrepreneurs.” In fact, many entrepreneurs return to the program as mentors down the line! In this way, the community built within these cohorts at Village Capital is meant to last well beyond the duration of the program. In their work internationally, they’ve found that only 10% of investment goes to emerging markets, and of that small percentage, the distribution echoes a lot of what we see in the US. “In 2015-2016, 72% of all startup investment in East Africa went to only 3 companies, and 90% went to companies founded by non-local founders.” Companies in emerging markets also have unique problems, such as gaps in the value chain, that make these businesses more challenging to finance. “Traditional venture capital doesn’t know what to do with these types of businesses.” In order to measure near term success, Village Capital has partnered with Emory University to compare companies who participated in the program against a control group of companies who didn’t. “We want to know, are the companies we’ve supported able to access capital and grow their businesses in a more accelerated way?” The answer, so far, is positive: companies who went through the program are raising more than 2.5 times the capital, creating 70% more jobs, and generating 25% more revenue. Big thanks to Allie for joining me on the show this week, and to all of you out there listening. See you next week with a brand new episode!

Geoff Livingston provides knowledge based on his many experiences working with nonprofits that took years to learn. Data is full of surprises and if you watch carefully, you can find trends that help you better connect with your audience and actually get your message in front of your donors in way that catches and holds their attention. Knowing your audience not only allows you to tailor your communication to your target market’s preferences, but it also allows your organization to come across as one that is familiar with its supporters. “Repetition builds familiarity” after all. Best practices and benchmarks are a great way to see what’s happening on a larger scale and they can certainly help guide you in your marketing, but there is a lot to be said for studying your own data and finding what works for you; because, what works for someone else may not necessarily be what works for you and what works for you may not be accurately represented by these industry trends. Know your people. Know yourself. And to thine own self, be true. (William Shakespeare) How? Data. Lots of it. Listen in to learn how to use your data to help you create effective communication tactics and to ultimately help you strengthen your relationships with your members. The Twin Cities Impact Investing Ecosystem Map documents impact investing activity in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. If you would have picked up a copy of the Financial Times last Saturday, you might have noticed a half-page ad asking readers to participate in the Investing for Global Impact research study. Two pages later, you may have also noticed a full-page ad for a report from Principles for Responsible Investing (PRI) on the relationship between the Sustainable Development Goals and investment opportunities. And, you may have caught this interview with Rehana Nathoo of The Case Foundation on their efforts to map this space. Impact investing is a hot topic. According to the World Economic Forum, impact investing “intentionally seeks to create both financial return and positive social or environmental impact that is actively measured.” But, what does impact investing look like in the Twin Cities? Last year, Susan Hammel set about to answer this question. Susan is the CEO of Cogent Consulting and Executive in Residence for impact investing for the Minnesota Council on Foundations. In 2016, Cogent Consulting partnered with the Bush Foundation, the Impact Hub Minneapolis – Saint Paul, and others in the community to map the impact investment space. The result is Twin Cities Impact Investing Ecosystem map. The map consists of three components: sources of capital, companies being funded and intermediaries. The map covers both debt and equity investments. Work on the Twin Cities Impact Investment Ecosystem continues. Rehana and I have a wide ranging conversation, but dig in deep on the Case Foundations newest project, the Impact Investing Network Mapp. Fueled with publically available data, it's the first attempt to put all of the data around impact deals into one visual tool.  It's a bold new project, currently in the final leg of its open feedback period, after you listen to the podcast, make sure you go check out the map. Play with it, dive into it. What do you love about it, what's missing, and what potential do you see?  For me, I'm excited to see where impact deals are happening outside placed like the Valley and New York. Maybe we'll find some unlikely hotspots of impact. I'm also excited to see the definition of an "impact deal" continue to evolve and be solidified. I'm of the firm belief that there are far more "impact" companies out there that "non-impact" - and this map will be a tool to help increase and expand the public awareness of the space.  Show notes and resources Rehana Nathoo LinkedIn | Twitter | Medium The Case Foundation Case Foundation - Impact Investing Network Explanation  The Impact Investing Network Map | Demo Rehana Nathoo at the Wharton Social Impact Conference 2017 The Impact Investor Rockefeller Foundation Rockefeller Foundation - Impact Investing   www.impactinvestingpodcast.com facebook.com/impactinvestingpodcast.com @impinvpodcast   Casefoundation.org @CaseFoundation

This week on The School for Humanity we have Rachel Sumekh who is the CEO of Swipe out Hunger. Swipe Out Hunger works to end hunger by activating college students to donate unused meal points to feed their peers and community members in need. By taking a resource that already exists (meal points) and using those funds to solve a global problem (hunger), Swipe Out Hunger promotes innovative solutions to a wasteful system. Born under the name "Swipes for the Homeless" in 2009, a few friends at UCLA went into the dining hall, used their meal cards to take away some sandwiches and then delivered them around town. In a single week, 300 meals were collected. A few months later, the team partnered with UCLA's Dining Services to allow students to donate their extra meal funds to provide 1,087 meals to community members. By the Fall of 2014, the team collected over 15,000 donated meals in a single week. In 2015, their movement was renamed to Swipe Out Hunger but their objectives to end hunger, raise awareness about this issue, and foster student leadership have remained central to their mission.  The organization has served 1.2 million meals and was called a Champion of Change by The White House. Rachel was recognized on the 2017 Forbes' 30 Under 30 for Social Entrepreneurship. Under her leadership, the organization has scaled nationally and tripled its budget. Swipe Out Hunger has been recognized by The White House, Forbes, The Case Foundation, and other influencers as a benchmark for positive change on America's college campuses and an emerging leader in the non-profit field of hunger awareness and alleviation.

“I think we need to have a more evenly dispersed innovation economy and we need to make sure that anybody, anywhere, with an idea has a shot at the American dream.”Steve CaseIt's hard to imagine, but in 1985 — the year this week's guest co-founded America Online — only 3% of Americans were connected to the internet, online for an average of a measly one hour per week.It took a decade, many near-death experiences and back to the wall pivots, but under the leadership of Steve Case, AOL would go on to become the world’s largest and most valuable internet company, driving worldwide adoption of the medium that has literally transformed every aspect of modern day life. The story is legend. After AOL became the first internet company to go public, Bill Gates gave Steve a choice — sell his upstart to behemoth Microsoft or get crushed. Believing in himself, his team and the renegade idea of community over content, Steve decided to take his chances. David against Goliath, the odds were not in his favor. But not only did AOL survive, it went on to become the top performing stock of the 1990s. At its peak, nearly half the users in the United States used AOL to access the internet. When AOL's valuation escalated to $163 billion in 2000, Steve negotiated a $350 billion merger of AOL and Time Warner, the largest merger in business history, and served as chairman of the media and communication colossus until 2003.It all looked great on paper. But paper isn't reality. Cultures clashed. The stock price plummeted. With his own take on why the historic merger faltered, Steve lives to fight another day.Today Steve is chairman and CEO of Revolution, DC-based investment firm, and the Case Foundation, a philanthropic effort that invests in hundreds of organizations with an entrepreneurial approach to strengthening the social sector. The epitome of the American Entrepreneur and a true maverick of the digital age, this week I sit down with Steve to discuss his incredible story, the current state of entrepreneurship in America, and his new book highlighting an emerging new phase of the internet. Part memoir, part business playbook, and part manifesto, The Third Wave, An Entrepreneur's Vision of The Future* bears witness to the fascinating machinations behind crafting the early stages of the internet we currently enjoy and provides an astute forecast for successfully stewarding pioneering tech entrepreneurship in the coming decades.I only had a very strict 45 minute window with Steve, so this is a pretty tightly focused discussion. It's a conversation about the internet's incipient Third Wave and the focus on partnerships, policy and persistence that will be required to tackle and transform hulking, real world sectors like health, transportation, education, energy, and food. It's about something Steve calls impact investing — fostering the nascent emergence of entrepreneurship in outlier locales beyond the typical tech hotbeds of Silicon Valley, Silicon Alley and Silicon Beach. It's a conversation about why the most valuable currency of the future is ideas. And it's about why the killer app is, and will always be, people.Steve Case has impacted our world more than anyone I have ever met. It was an honor to converse with him, and I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange.Peace + Plants,Listen & Subscribe on iTunes | See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
