Scott Ladner, chief investment officer at Horizon Investments, says that the stock market will need earnings growth to generate returns in 2025, but that those gains should run roughly equal to the level of earnings growth, leaving the market set up for low double-digit gains in 2025. He says that technology continues to provide a tailwind to the market, though henotes that the artificial intelligence evolution makes for a moving target where investors might want to gravitate towards industries that are adjacent to AI, making money off of the companies and sectors that use AI to drive profit gains. Ladner — whose firm practices goals-based planning — noted that while the U.S. economy remains the world's strongest, it would be a mistake to ignore international markets now. Leigh Purvis, prescription drug policy principal at the AARP Public Policy Institute discusses her research into showing that prices on brand-name drugs have been rising much faster than the rate of general inflation for decades, creating challenges — particularly for Medicare Part D enrollees — that many people have addressed by not refilling prescriptions or by skipping doses to make prescriptions last longer. Plus Dan Crowley, partner at Nightview Capital — portfolio manager of the Nightview Fund — brings his concentrated growth approach to the Market Call.

In today’s episode, Rusty and Robyn talk with Scott Ladner, Chief Investment Officer at Horizon Investments in North Carolina.  After majoring in economics and Russian literature in college, Scott decided that the financial industry was a better career path for him. He started as a derivatives and volatility trader for banks and hedge funds, before starting his own arbitrage hedge fund that eventually folded into Horizon Investments.  Scott talks with Rusty and Robyn about the tailwinds that are pushing the markets forward, the state of cryptocurrency, and what it means to be a truly tactical investor.  He also shares strategies for how to change and evolve in a fast-paced industry. “In a goals-based framework, the way you define the return and the way you define risk mathematically changes depending on where your client is with respect to their financial plan. Is their primary objective growing assets or protecting assets? That primary objective will help inform the primary metric we use to define risk. And that combination will drive how the money ends up being managed.” @horizoninvestment Main takeaways  There are consistent positive returns if you look in unlikely places. A bond portfolio is going to do well and provide positive returns.  Like everything else in life, a portfolio is about trade-offs. Clients should think about the four most critical components of their portfolio before making decisions about allocation: liquidity, inflation protection, portfolio growth, and legacy wealth.  Clients thrive with clear expectations. Happy clients come from clear expectations of how a product is meant to perform. In 1998, Scott Ladner hit the derivatives scene at First Union, just as LTCM was imploding and equity volatility was rocketing higher.  No sooner would the Fed help contain that risk episode, then the tech bubble would be set in motion.  An intense period of “stocks up, vol up”  during which valuations expanded to unheard of levels, followed by an equally intense, “stocks down, vol up” characterized the period of 1999 through 2001 and provided hands on, sometimes painful experiences for Scott in managing convexity risk.  Short airline volatility during the September 11th terrorist attack, Scott quickly came to appreciate the potential for significant gap risk and discontinuity in markets, a reality not contemplated in the textbook version of Black Scholes. My conversation with Scott considers insights gathered over a career managing volatility exposure across asset classes and how he came to his role as CIO of Horizon Investments.  Scott shares his views on how volatility can come and go, how many factors can come to impact the price of options and how important it is to have a number of little bets on versus being overly concentrated in a singular exposure.  He points to the value, but also the dangers of option models, learning along the way not to take the output too seriously and to constantly re-examine the assumptions being made.  Today, Scott’s dashboard consists of credit, liquidity and risk metrics with the goal of identifying incongruities that help him focus his research to better understand market dynamics.  In this context, we discuss the early and late year vol events of 2018.Lastly, we discuss Horizon’s efforts on behalf of its clients to manage wealth and reach retirement goals within the constraints of the low growth and low interest rate environment.  His team is seeking to build risk management techniques that work specifically in today’s unique economic and financial climate.  Noting that there is now “an ETF for everything”, he sees the last 10 years as the age of product.  The next 10, in contrast, he views as the age of planning, where the focus should be on how to best utilize these new products to maximize the wealth and overall experience of retirement for individuals.  Please enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Scott Ladner.

It's the election FarrCast! Kenny Polcari calls in from the floor on the New York Stock Exchange. The markets had a big relief rally on Wednesday: split government is what the markets wanted to see. Then on Thursday, the markets breathed out. Kenny says we are in a seasonally strong time of year, but will likely test support before another leg up. Looking forward to 2019, Michael and Kenny say there is competition for money next year, and that's a good thing. We go to Washington with Dan Mahaffee from the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress. Dan pretty much called the election results right on: the suburbs turned towards the Democrats in the House, but the electoral map kept the Senate in GOP hands. Dan points out that divided government has historically produced significant legislation. Will we see the Art of the Deal President next year, or the Campaign Rally President? We continue to live in interesting times. For our special guest, tonight we have Greg Valliere, Chief Global Strategist for Horizon Investments. His career has been studying the links between DC policy and Wall St market movement. The 2018 midterms are over, and the 2020 campaign begins immediately, and Greg sees little getting done. He takes a little bit of a a contrarian view: gridlock is maybe not as good thing the markets think -- health care, infrastructure, and especially deficits all need attention. The important point for investors is the economic fundamentals are pretty sound, but Greg has some concerns that he shares.
