Broken Oars Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 19, 2022 83:45

Usually Broken Oars Podcast returns with a spring in its step and a song in its heart - we love doing this podcast, because we get to do what every rower everywhere does when they're in the company of another rower: talk about rowing, and rowers, and water, and boats, and training, and racing, and cake, and seals, and otters, and ... when we were at Agecroft ...   When we were in the war ...   Shut up, Granddad. Get hep to the new sounds going around, Daddio!   However, we're returning with somewhat grim looks as World Rowing has returned a positive drug test for an indoor rower called Christopher Bailey and sanctioned him to a ban.   This is in itself a major blow for our sport.   If you're an indoor rower you're just as much a rower as a water rower.   However, what made the blow doubly depressing is that Lewin got in touch with Christopher Bailey - and the long and the short of their conversation was that Christopher Bailey doesn't feel he did anything wrong as he wasn't using the PED's he tested positive for at the time that he failed the test.   Not that he didn't didn't use them.   That he wasn't using them at the time he was tested.   That Christopher Bailey was up front and honest about the fact that he used the PED's; and that he was upset that he has been labelled a drug cheat because HE WASN'T USING THEM AT THE TIME HE TESTED POSITIVE is significant.   It's significant because it highlights the chilling cultural difference between sports that take PED use for granted and accept it, like body building, power lifting and fitness influencing, which is Christopher Bailey's background ... and sports that say if you take PED's AT ANY POINT you are a drug user and drug cheat ... like, well, like every other sport really, but especially rowing.   So, in this episode, Lewin and I get deep into the weeds about Christopher Bailey's positive test. As well as talking about how to make an otter by taking a seal, some dog hair, and some Pritt Stick, we get into the science behind what Christopher Bailey took (Masterone); we talk through the effects of Masterone; what it's used for as a PED; and what it means in terms of performance - in body building, physique training, and endurance sports like rowing.   We discuss Christopher Bailey's position (I'm not a cheat, because I wasn't taking them at the time I was tested and competing) and tease out what it means for rowing if sportsmen and women from sporting cultures that accept, encourage, condone or support drug use, whether tacitly or explicitly cross over via the gateway of indoor rowing competitions to rowing itself - and what that means for a sport whose culture is explicitly and tacitly that 'we don't take PED's. Ever.'   We look at how the narcissism of the screen age fuels PED use; and how that has fuelled an the acceptance of PED use among influencers and related sports; before expressing our fears about how this acceptance can potentially cross over into all sports - and what that means for rowing, where the culture depends on acceptance and trust in the collective and the individual.   We can usually find the good in most things and generally there is very little that we can't make a quip about. But on this occasion, we definitively state that although we want people to come into rowing and stay in rowing, if you take PED's to make yourself fitter, faster, stronger, more muscular, or for other personal internal pyschological reasons ...   Find a different sport.   (And in case you think we've gone all serious, we also invent Anna Bolic, a steriod-addled fitness influencer who keeps crapping her liver out. It won't go in The Beano, so dear Viz, please get in touch. We've got ideas for storylines. We also talk about meeting things with a plum and the Battle of Richmond).   All eight? Ask the average informed citizen what the responsibilities of the World Health Organization are, and they're likely to name initiatives like funding medical research and coordinating with politicians and diplomats across the globe to hone optimal public-health policy. So it may surprise you to learn that the WHO also maintains an entire program dedicated to the study and support of the arts as integral tools in human well-being—and that it sees culture as a crucial force in combating the coronavirus crisis that has engulfed much of the planet in 2020. Christopher Bailey, the WHO's arts and health lead, oversees this team of specialists as they pursue everything from producing evidence-based reports on the concrete ways in which art aids mental and physical health, to working with artists across media to craft health messaging that connects on an emotional level rather than a purely rational one. The program's multifaceted efforts will continue via "The Future Is Unwritten Healing Arts Auction," a major charitable initiative that Artnet and Christie's will be partnering on with the WHO to support the organization's coronavirus response efforts, with a focus on urgently needed mental-health initiatives and the applied use of arts in recovery after the pandemic. As part of the initiative, Artnet Auctions will be launching a sale in October 2020, leveraging its industry-leading online platform to surface voices from the global artistic community in pursuit of a common goal.  In honor of the partnership, Christopher Bailey joins this week's episode of the Art Angle to discuss his deeply personal firsthand experience with the healing capacity of art, the reasons that investments in culture double as investments in health (and vice versa), and why he sees the art world as the next "theater of operations" for the WHO's noble mission.

Jon Stewart's testimony before Congress reminded America - in scathing terms - of their responsibility to 9/11 first responders, but the effects of that day spread to nearby residents as well. Carolyn Glasoe Bailey owned an art gallery in lower Manhattan, and years later in Los Angeles, she was diagnosed with brain cancer. Her doctors told her it was mostly likely due to her proximity to Ground Zero. When Jon Stewart took to CSPAN, it moved Lila Glasoe Francese, her sister, to finally release the book she wrote about Caroline's journey. When Carolyn is diagnosed with glioblastoma brain cancer, Lila is unaware of the complexity of the diagnosis and unprepared for the devastating path to come. When she was told she had cancer, Carolyn opted into treatment, even knowing it might change her personality. At that time, Lila went to search for a book to help her understand what her sister was going through and what her family should expect. She couldn't find anything to support her. So she wrote the book she needed at the time to support others in their own journey. The Situation takes readers on an emotional and intense journey that explores the lifelong bond between siblings and the aching loss of deep relationship. Like When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi and Being Mortal by Atul Gawande, it deals intimately with the choices terminal patients face, and the effect of those choices on those who love them. In this episode, Valeria Teles interviews Lila Glasoe Francese.                                                                Lila was born in Minneapolis in the 1970s and was the first Glasoe sister to leave the Midwest. She enrolled in SMU's Meadow's School of the Arts in 1990, where she was offered a full scholarship in their Bachelor of Fine Arts Program.
She graduated in 1994 and moved to Los Angeles, CA. In LA, Lila sold a screen play (Peg & Shirl), provided character voices for animated television shows (the most notable Family Guy), renovated real estate and ran the personal lives of producers, studio heads and CEOs.
Lila is the recipient of a McKnight Fellowship, the Wellesley Book Award (given to young women of leadership) and is also a graduate of Breck School. She appeared professionally in regional theatre in both Minneapolis and Los Angeles. Lila has been a long supporter of the arts, beginning her fine art collection in 1995 with the help of her sister Carolyn Glasoe.

After the death of her sister Carolyn, Lila helped found, alongside her brother in law Christopher Bailey, The Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation. This non-profit art charity continues to keep Carolyn's artistic enthusiasm, fierce generosity and innovative spirit alive throughout the fine art world. Her book, The Situation, was release on May 5, 2020 in honor of her sister Carolyn and National Brain Cancer Awareness Month.   To learn more about Lila Glasoe Francese please visit her website http://carolynglasoebaileyfoundation.org For Intro-free episodes: https://www.patreon.com/aquestforwellbeingpodcast Podcast Page: https://fitforjoy.org/podcast   ** Bio intro and outro one by Heidi Lynn Peters.

As teachers around the world move into online teaching and learning, we must consider ways to modify our way of teaching. Writing and communicating in an online learning environment, while making connections with your students, is a very important first step. This is the second episode in a two-part series. Video can help students connect with the concepts and provide an opportunity for teachers to engage and add opportunities to connect with their students. How will teachers adapt their teaching in order to communicate and engage learners? What materials will teachers develop to ignite motivation with students? How will connections and community be built via online courses? In this episode, Sean and Kelly talk with Christopher Bailey from Real Python. We will share tips and techniques for developing quality online videos for learners. Ten Tips for Developing Video Content online: 1. Make an outline 1. Use a table of contents 1. Use of slides and code editor 1. Short video lengths 1. Intro, teach, repeat 1. Recreating 1. Display the code -speeding it up 1. Try out a repl that works well (B python for code completion) 1. Remove the jargon make it audience specific 1. Find your pacing "The goal of online communications is the same as the goal in face-to-face communications: to bond; to share information; to be heard, and to be understood. Fostering a sense of community in online classes will make the learning experience more meaningful for online students and help them stay connected during the life of the course." From Humanizing Online Teaching and Learning (https://humanmooc.pressbooks.com/chapter/using-video-to-humanize-online-instruction/) Special Guest: Christopher Bailey.

DESTINATION EDUCATION: WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE

In this episode of Destination Education, John teams up with a couple of his Comrades from the Dirty Dozen aka Cohort 1 of Baylor's Ed.D Program reboot. Dr. Christopher Bailey describes a few of the efforts underway in Katy ISD to transition to a distance learning model during the Covid-19 Pandemic, and Dr. David DeMarkis postulates the potential Community based accountability presents as an alternative to the high stakes testing model of accountability prevalent in federal and state educational policies. All the while, Dr. Bullion aka Chaos in a Suit rants and raves about the duel systems of education known as general education and special education being at odds with one another in a zero sum game of halves and have nots in which children are grouped into winners and losers. @achaoticmessr12

On the latest episode of Fashion Originators, I have the joy of interviewing Patrick McDowell, who, as aptly put by L’Officiel Magazine, is the ‘CSM graduate already dressing the stars.’ While that is very true (the likes of Rita Ora, M.I.A and Slick Woods on the cover of Elle UK serve as evidence), Patrick’s brand and vision go far beyond straight-up glamour. During his placement year at Burberry, Patrick learned that Burberry only used 30% of their sampling fabric. After writing Christopher Bailey a letter, Patrick was given off-cut fabric to use for his graduate collection. Entitled ‘Climbing Family’ the collection is a juxtaposition of hypermasculine climbingwear against his ‘Liverpool glam’ roots.  Recommended Media:  Clare Press book, podcast  Charles Jeffrey Loverboy  Patrick on BBC's Young Apprentice Patrick's graduate collection  Follow Patrick:  Instagram, website  To keep up-to-date with everything Fashion Originators: For podcast updates - www.fashionoriginators.com  For Instagram fun - www.instagram.com/fashionoriginatorspodcast For Facebook updates - www.facebook.com/fashionoriginators Thank you so much for listening! Can you imagine experimenting for a year on how to be most productive? Well, Christopher Bailey is doing just that with his ayearofproductivity.com project. Chris contacted me to talk about procrastination. He agreed to make the interview into a podcast, so I got to turn the table on him and interview him about his project as well. So, this podcast is a mixture of my thoughts on procrastination in answer to Chris as well as my questions to Chris about productivity. It's a long interview and a good one, I think.

Men än idag är just märkets klassiska regnrocksmodell kärnan i varumärket.

Die Bambi Verleihung 2007 Am Donnerstag Abend fand die große Bambi Verleihung 2007 statt. Hier sind die Preisträger: 1 Ehren Bambi ging an Königin Rania Al Abdullah (Königen von Jordanien). Sophia Loren bekam ihren 9. Bambi. Unser Fazit 10/10 Punkten.
