Adam Weinstein is a Managing Director, COO, and CFO of New Mountain Capital, a $50 billion private equity firm focused on middle market buyout, credit, and net lease strategies. I really enjoyed this conversation because we focused on two critical elements of building investment firms: people and process. Adam discusses their investment committee governance process that seeks to foster broad input from the team to mitigate errors and promote consistency. We also uncover some of the challenges in group decision making and why New Mountain is opposed to the term “back office.” We then dig into how inclusiveness drives performance reviews, compensation structures and how to develop a mentor program. Jay kicks us off this week with a remembrance and celebration of the late Shane MacGowan, who died last week at the age of 65. Known best as the frontman for the Celtic punk band the Pogues, MacGowan brought traditional Irish music to the UK punk scene of the 1970s & 80s. His lyrics were both crass and profound, his voice fit his hard-lived appearance perfectly, and he will be missed.Songs: The Pogues - “If I Should Fall From Grace With God”The Pogues - “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda”The Pogues (feat. Kristy MacColl) - “Fairytale of New York”Elaborating on a story from last week's News with Nick, we learn more about the lead up to New Mountain Capital's acquisition BMI. Alongside ASCAP, BMI appealed to the Justice Department in 2014 for an update to the 1941 consent decrees that control major aspects of their organizations. In response, the Justice Department refused to modify any of the restrictions and added new requirements that seem to force the organization to find a better way to do its business. In Theory is a bit that does just that. Greg busts out the keyboard and breaks the songs down to determine whether there's something to the claim.Songs: Hozier - “Take Me to Church”Taylor Swift - “Don't Blame Me”
It's no secret that the market for private credit has boomed in recent years. The surprising thing is that it has continued to do so even as interest rates have surged, defying many people's expectation that this relatively new market would suffer once an era of "loose" money comes to an end. Instead, the market for private credit in the US now rivals the size of the market for publicly-traded, junk-rated corporate bonds. But what exactly is private credit? How does it differ from broadly-syndicated stuff like leverage loans and corporate debt? How susceptible is it to higher rates? What is driving continued interest in this asset class? And what could cause it to wobble? On this episode we speak with Laura Holson of New Mountain Capital — where she manages about $9 billion across various private credit investments — about how the industry works. The Last Tranche with New Mountain's Kline and Moshiri: we have more flexibility than a typical CLO around industry selectionIn this episode of the Last Tranche, John Kline and Cyrus Moshiri from New Mountain Capital discuss the innovative rated feeder fund structure they recently priced, and why they chose this approach over a traditional middle market CLO.After explaining the details of how rated feeder funds like Guardian IV Rated Feeder work, Kline explained that one key benefit is of the structure is the increased flexibility it offers on industry diversity. Their chosen structure is a CLO-like product, but that lets them pursue their investment strategy without having to be forced into industries that we don't like as a firm.
Today's guest is Steve Klinsky, founder and CEO of New Mountain Capital, a private equity firm with over $37 billion in assets under management. Steve began his time in private equity when he co-founded Goldman Sachs' Leverage Buyout Group back in 1981 when there were very few private equity firms around. In today's episode, Steve shares how the private equity industry has evolved over his career to go from a focus on financial engineering to a focus on building businesses. Then he talks about the opportunity today in private credit and what the key drivers are to helping businesses grow and generate returns for both the employees and his firm. He even walks us through some real deals, including his sale of Signify Health to CVS earlier this year for a $8 billion. Enjoy learning about private equity? Pulitzer Prize-winner and Executive Director of Modern States, David Vise, joins Naka in a captivating episode discussing how students can take advantage of a lesser-known College Board test that has been around for over 50 years to gain college credit early and save THOUSANDS of dollars in tuition! The CLEP exam (College-Level Examination Program) is a series of over 30 Pass/Fail tests that ANYONE in pursuit of a degree can take. With a passing score of over 50%, students can gain college credit for entry-level college classes that can be transferred to over 3,000 public universities. Consequently, David saw this as an opportunity to address the largest financial burden in the United States: The College Debt Crisis. Since the CLEP tests are based on getting credits for "what you know," Modern States flipped the model to getting credits for 'what you can learn.' Through its partnerships with organizations such as the Carnegie Foundation and nationally recognized professors, Modern States has been able to provide free online classes to prepare students of all backgrounds and education levels to gain the knowledge needed to pass the CLEP, earn college credit, save money, and graduate early...all for free! Discussions include the national debt crisis, the confidence students gain for college by passing the CLEP, and how to strategize your CLEP tests to back up any difficult AP?IB tests! Our Guest: David Vise is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter who worked at The Washington Post for 23 years. The SGX Nifty was trading 50 odd points higher at 11,840 levels at 7:30 AM, indicating a gap-up opening for the Indian markets today. This comes despite a weak set of global cues. US indices fell sharply to open the week’s trading, as anxiety over new record daily COVID-19 cases in the United States, Russia and France weighed on investor appetite. The Dow fell 2.3 per cent, the S&P 500 lost 1.86 per cent, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.64 per cent. Asian markets also declined on Tuesday. Australia’s ASX 200 fell 1.6 per cent, while Japan’s Nikkei dipped 0.2 per cent. Hong Kong’s main index also slid half a per cent. Back home, corporate results will remain the key trigger for the Indian markets. Investors will first react to the results announced post market hours yesterday. Despite a dip in its US and Brazil revenues, Torrent Pharmaceuticals yesterday posted a 27 per cent year-on-year growth in its consolidated profit after tax for the September quarter of FY21 at Rs 310 crore. Meanwhile, Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services’ net profit rose by 21 per cent to Rs 304 crore in Q2FY21, from Rs 252 crore in the same quarter a year ago. A total of 37 companies including Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, and Amara Raja Batteries are scheduled to announce their September quarter earnings today. Analysts expect Bharti Airtel's losses to shrink and revenue rise on year-on-year basis, helped by firm subscriber addition and ARPU rise in an otherwise seasonally weak quarter. Meanwhile, Tata Motors is seen reporting muted numbers in year-on-year terms, largely due to fall in JLR volume. Meanwhile, in a big positive for India, MSCI will implement changes in Foreign Ownership Limits in the MSCI Global Indexes containing Indian securities coinciding with the November 20202 Semi-Annual index review. On the Covid front, India's total cases have risen to 79.45 lakh, with 1.19 lakh deaths, according to the latest update by Worldometer. And now a quick look at other top news State-owned power giant NTPC on Monday said its board will on November 2 consider a proposal to buy back the company's equity shares. Hulst B V, the promoter of IT firm Coforge Ltd, on Monday sold 38 lakh shares of the company for more than Rs 878 crore. Hulst B V held 70.28 per cent stake in the company, as per the shareholding pattern as on September quarter. Aditya Puri yesterday stepped out of HDFC Bank's corporate headquarters after handing over charge to Sashidhar Jagdishan as the new chief executive and managing director of the largest private sector lender. Aurobindo Pharma has reached a definitive agreement to sell its US subsidiary Natrol LLC to private equity firm New Mountain Capital and its affiliate Jarrow Formulas in an all-cash transaction valued at $550 million.
