Sarah McDowell (The SEO Mindset Podcast) and Natasha Willings (Limitless Learning education services) join Flixwatcher to review Sarah's choice How to Blow Up a Pipeline. How to Blow Up a Pipeline (2022) is action-thriller inspired by the book of the same name by Andreas Malm that explores ideas on climate activism and sabotage to create change. The film is directed by Daniel (Cam - do check out our Fixwatcher episode on this!) Goldhaber and stars relatively unknown actors Ariela Barer, Kristine Froseth, Lukas Gage, Forrest Goodluck, Sasha Lane, Jayme Lawson, Marcus Scribner, Jake Weary, and Irene Bedard.   The film version follows a fictional group of eight people who are brought together to blow up an oil pipeline at two key locations. Their motivations range from being directly affected by the actions of the oil company or to be climate activists. They all feel that non-disruptive action is not sufficient and are prepared to risk prison to carry out the plan.   Recommendability scores for How to Blow Up a Pipeline were pretty strong, everyone agreed it was an important subject and opened up interesting conversations on climate activism. Scores were lower for repeat viewing but due to its punchy runtime and fast moving narrative it scores a very respectable 3.51 overall. Fonseca sits down with actress Irene Bedard (voice Pocahontas)American actress, who has played mostly lead Native Americanroles in a variety of films. She is perhaps best known for the role of Suzy Song in the 1998 film Smoke Signals, an adaptation of a Sherman Alexie collection of short stories, as well as for providing the speaking voice for the titular character in the 1995 animated film Pocahontas.[2] Bedard reprised her role as Pocahontas in the film's direct-to-video follow-up, Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World (1998) and for a cameo in Ralph Breaks the InternetCollider magazine says work on the second Super Mario Bros movie has been halted because of the Hollywood Writers Strike TParamount+ is developing a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV show. The series would take place after the upcoming Mutant Mayhem movie and may launch as soon as 2024.Arnold Schwarzenegger says he beat out OJ Simpson for the role of The Terminator because no one at Orion Pictures was convinced Simpson was a killer. The Daily Mail quotes Arnold as saying, ''During our conversation, it became clear no one was hooked to OJ Simpson playing Terminator because he could not be sold as a killing machine.''Chris Hemsworth tells GQ magazine that his three children aren't fans of his Thor movies.“It's a bunch of eight-year-olds critiquing my film. ‘We thought this one had too much humour, the action was cool but the VFX weren't as good'. I cringe and laugh equally at it. It's always hard being in the center of it and having any real perspective… I love the process, it's always a ride. But you just don't know how people are going to respond.” The JoBlo movie website says filming on ''Deadpool 3'' has begun. Ryan Reynolds is not allowed to improvise on the set because of the writer's strike. He can't use new lines for the film because he is officially credited as a writer on it. The Writer's Union has guidelines that do not allow lines to be changed when a movie is filming during a strike. Media Entertainment Arts says there is a growing number of people, who want Chris Pratt to replace Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. The Internet reacts ...“We shouldn't have to raise Harrison Ford from the dead to enjoy another #IndianaJones adventure. After seeing Chris Pratt in both GotG & Jurassic World, he became my new candidate for a recast. It's not hard.''“I may get heat for this but Chris Pratt as Indiana Jones would rock.”“I hope they continue the Indiana Jones franchise and cast Chris Pratt as Indy.”“If they ever decided to make a rebooted version of Indiana Jones in the near future? The only two individuals I could see playing Indy? Are Chris Pratt or Bradley Cooper? Both of which have worked for Disney before and look like Harrison Ford.” Entertainment Tonight says Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd are reuniting for a new horror comedy called ''Zombie Town''. The movie is about a film that turns an entire town into zombies before two teenagers save everyone. Chevy and Dan haven't worked together since the 1991 movie "Nothing, But Trouble".Robert Englund tells Variety magazine that he is too old to play Freddy Krueger again. “I'm too old and thick to play Freddy now. I just can't do fight scenes for more than one take anymore, I've got a bad neck and bad back and arthritis in my right wrist. So I have to hang it up, but I would love to cameo.”

It's just Alaska, or Northern British Columbia. This is across all of North America and Indigenous territories. We've been, unfortunately, living this our whole lives so, it's not shocking, it's not new or anything I haven't heard of. But to be able to showcase it on a network television show and be on the TVs of people who have never heard of this? It matters. It matters that non-Indigenous folks will have an opportunity to educate themselves and to show compassion.”   “I really hope that audiences can take it upon themselves to be curious and to start educating themselves on the true history of the territories that they now live on.”   Alaska Daily airs new episodes at 10pm ET on ABC and is available to stream on Hulu

Hey everybody! This was my first crack at a tv show and I thought I would do more free form than my usual format. I did my research and discussed the positives, negatives, and gave some final thoughts. Also I recorded a new intro!  Lou Diamond Phillips again!? Well I talk about it...and why it's tolerable but still not okay.  Zahn McLarnon and Irene Bedard are the prominent Native actors that grace the first season and I'm here for it. Despite my desire to dislike this show, it's a great show with solid Native representation. This show talks about MMIW, ICWA issues, Blood Quantum issues, and even Native witchcraft (YEEHUH!)  Overall, it's a show that covers a lot of ground, looks into the world of the modern native but only touches on the surface. Should you dislike it for it only going surface? No because that's not what the show is about, for what it is...it's great.  Let me know what you all think and have a good one.

Here it is! Pocahontas (1995) is about a free spirited young woman that is caught between her freedom and an arranged marriage, until sails comes on the horizon. John Smith (Mel Gibson) and the Virginia Company come to the New World in search of gold and will kill any Indians in their path! John Smith comes across Pocahontas (Irene Bedard) and this hunt for gold eventually becomes a quest for love against all odds. Can the power of love conquer the hunger for gold? This episode is a complicated review because I loved this movie as a kid! You will hear me go back and forth about the right and wrong of this movie, and where I stand on it. As I unpack this moral conundrum, I shed light on some post production interviews conducted by Russell Means (Chief Powatan) and Irene Bedard that reveal they were proud of the native representation in this film. Also this is the first Disney princess that didn't need rescuing, however...despite these positives, will it hold up as a movie that depicts natives positively? Come listen and find out!

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon? Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned? Well that's because they just heard about these thirteen things from Disney's Pocahontas. So thanks for giving us your time while you gobble these up. Animators working on the film regarded it as being one of the hardest films ever produced by the studio. The complex color schemes, angular shapes, and facial expressions meant that the film was in production for five years. Pocahontas is now frequently cited as being one of the most beautifully, and realistically, animated characters in the Disney canon, her fluid movements mainly being attributed to rotoscoping. The film's release on June 23, 1995, was also the 400th anniversary of the real Pocahontas' birth. The Disney executives had all the secondary animal characters, such as Meeko and Flit, lose all of their dialogue in order to make the film a bit more serious. The end credits song "If I Never Knew You", was cut after children in test audiences found it boring and the adults found it too depressing. The unfinished sequence was shown in ABC's 1997 airing of the film. For the 10th anniversary DVD release, the animation was completed and the song inserted back into the film, as well as a short reprise in the final scene. "Colors of the Wind" was the first song written for this production, and helped define the tone and direction of the film. Though this song features the word "mountain" in its verses, the real Pocahontas supposedly never saw any mountains in her lifetime. John Candy had provided a large amount of voice work into a character named "Redfeather", a turkey as Pocahontas' sidekick. After Candy's death in 1994, the concept was scrapped. In real-life, Pocahontas would have been more likely to be topless and likely covered in tribal tattoos, even her face. Pocahontas is one of the few cartoon characters to be granted a proper "photo spread" in Harper's Bazaar. For the June 1995 edition, Gianni Versace, Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui, and Isaac Mizrahi all designed special outfits for her, which were then drawn by Disney animators for the magazine. Upon it's initial release, then-studio head Jeffrey Katzenberg regarded Pocahontas as a more prestigious project than The Lion King, and even believed that it had a chance of earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, following in the steps of Beauty and the Beast. John Pomeroy was the Supervising Animator for John Smith, and watched several Errol Flynn movies, as reference for the movements of the character. Once the look of Smith was finalized, fourteen other animators were drafted in to make him come to life. As all the actors recorded their dialogue separately, they did not meet each other until the premiere. Mel Gibson did not attend the premiere because he was away filming Braveheart. As of 2019, Irene Bedard (who voiced Pocahontas) still has not met him. Shirley "Little Dove" Custalow-McGowan, a descendant of the real Pocahontas, worked on the film as a consultant. When she discovered that there would be a lot of artistic license with history, she left the project. This is the first Disney film to be censored before going to theaters, due to "racial slurs in the song 'Savages'". Some lyrics where changed for the film, as they were viewed as inappropriate (even though authentic to the setting). If you watch the scene in the film, it's obvious the animators had no time to match the mouth movements with the new lyrics. Interestingly, for some unknown reason, the original motion picture soundtrack still features the earlier lyrics. On this episode of the podcast, I talk with Oakland-based artist Katie Dorame. Dorame primarily works in painting and drawing to weave together elements from classic and camp Hollywood movies, genre fiction, and archival research to create narratives that explore colonialism and Native American pop-culture representations, leavened with moments of humor. Her work complicates this season’s theme of “movement,” challenging us to remember that movement is defined by the places moved through or into; that the power to enter in to a space is not the same as being welcomed in; and that the narratives that shape our knowledge of those journeys are a potential site to reclaim agency. In one of her signature series, Alien Apostles, Franciscan priests are depicted as invading outer space entities, terrorizing California’s Native peoples and facing staunch resistance. In Pirates & Sea Ghouls, she populates scenes from swashbuckling pirate cinema with Native American actors including Irene Bedard, Wes Studi, and Tantoo Cardinal, reimagining those oceanic Western fictions as a site for indigenous centered adventure. In our conversation we discuss the sources of her work; the compression of past, present, and future; and how painting suits her need for a reclusive practice. Katie Dorame is a visual artist, primarily working in painting, born in Los Angeles, currently living and working in Oakland. Dorame’s work has been exhibited at Shulamit Nazarian in Los Angeles, Southern Exposure, Galería de la Raza, Incline Gallery, and the Thacher Gallery in San Francisco as well as the Handwerker Gallery at Ithaca College in New York. She received her MFA from the California College of the Arts and her BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She is an Indigenous artist of mixed descent, and member of the Gabrielino/Tongva tribe of California. --- Subscribe to Art Practical on iTunes to catch (un)making as soon as it publishes, or look for it here every other Wednesday! Stephen Savage first came to prominence as the creative force behind the romantic ecology centered comedy “Cosmic Radio”, starring Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, and Irene Bedard (the voice of Disney’s “Pocahontas”). The film was the sleeper hit of the 2008 Palm Springs International Film Festival, becoming the first film to sell out all three of its opening weekend screenings. Since then, Savage has written, produced, and or directed five more feature films, including the 2011 thriller “Legacy”, starring Wolfgang Bodison (“A Few Good Men”, Joe Somebody”) and Conor O’Farrell (HBO’s The Pacific”, “Stir Of Echoes”), and two television length dramas for The Sundance Channel, “The Hunter’s Moon” starring Wes Studi, and “Tide Of Whispers”, a joint Scottish/Canadian project which was shot in the Arctic Circle. Savage wrote and directed the Rock climbing comedy-drama “Vertical”, winner of the Best Foreign Film Award at the 2015 London International Film Festival” and the Audience Choice trophy at the 2015 Paris Film Expo. His commercial work for such prominent clients as Tesla, Hyundai, Acura, Suzuki, and Kia, and his work with Time Warner’s Travel Channel, The History Channel, and Journey TV, all put him on the fast track to a major directing career in film, TV, and Web Based advertising, and his stint as a featured director on A&E Network’s “Son’s Of Hollywood” helped make him a triple threat in the film, TV and commercial ad game. Stephen is also the author of a new adaptation of California’s Official State Play, “Ramona”, based on the 1884 Helen Hunt Jackson novel and the 1923 stage play of the same name, which is performed each spring in the beautiful 6000 seat Ramona Bowl Amphitheater in Southern California. Savage is also the founder and director of the Idyllwild International Festival Of Cinema, occurring every March in Idyllwild, California. – IMDb Mini Biography By:  Sophie Jones (https://www.imdb.com/search/name?bio_author=Sophie%20Jones&view=simple&sort=alpha)

With the Thanksgiving season upon us, I thought it'd be a great opportunity to travel back in time to the days of Colonial America. Then I realized there's not really a lot of movies about the actual Thanksgiving story. So I decided to go with something that, although not about the Thanksgiving story itself, could transport us back to those days. And it's also a great opportunity to do something we haven't tackled yet on the podcast, a Disney animation. In the mid-1990s, the animation team at Disney was on a roll. Tapping into their pool of talent, Aladdin animator Eric Goldberg and The Rescuers Down Under director Mike Gabriel teamed up to take on a new challenge: adapting a true story for the big screen in Pocahontas. Timed to release on exactly 400 years after the real Pocahontas was born, Disney released their own musical interpretation of the story on June 16th, 1995. The movie boasted an amazing all-star cast including Irene Bedard, Mel Gibson, and Christian Bale, just to name a few. With a budget at about $55 million to make, it was a smash hit in the box office as it raked in over half that in the opening weekend. In all, it made over $140 million in theaters. At the time, that put it at #8 on the all-time Disney list of box office results. Of course, as time goes on its dropped quite a bit—as of recording this, thanks to Disney's acquisition of Pixar and Star Wars, Pocahontas is #65. While it was certainly a box office success, Pocahontas was severely criticized by a lot of historians for telling a tale that most people now believe to be a true story when, in fact, it was almost entirely inaccurate with what actually happened.   Links John Smith's 1616 letter to Queen Anne John Smith's 1624 book, The General Historie of Virginia Powhatan Nation's page about Disney's Pocahontas Ancient Origins' true story of Pocahontas More episodes on the Based on a True Story website Join the Based on a True Story Facebook page Support the show at Patreon Let me know what you think of the show on Twitter Music from this episode   Amazing Grace on Native American Flute by Earth Tongues Little Creek by Carl Young Native American Flute #1 by Sonic Yogi

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon? Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned? Well that's because they just heard about these thirteen things from Disney's Pocahontas. So thanks for giving us your time while you gobble these up. 13. 12. The film's release on June 23, 1995, was also the 400th anniversary of the real Pocahontas' birth. 11. The Disney executives had all the secondary animal characters, such as Meeko and Flit, lose all of their dialogue in order to make the film a bit more serious. 10. 9. "Colors of the Wind" was the first song written for this production, and helped define the tone and direction of the film. Though this song features the word "mountain" in its verses, the real Pocahontas supposedly never saw any mountains in her lifetime. 8. John Candy had provided a large amount of voice work into a character named "Redfeather", a turkey as Pocahontas' sidekick. After Candy's death in 1994, the concept was scrapped. 7. In real-life, Pocahontas would have been more likely to be topless and likely covered in tribal tattoos, even her face. 6. 5. Upon it's initial release, then-studio head Jeffrey Katzenberg regarded Pocahontas as a more prestigious project than The Lion King, and even believed that it had a chance of earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, following in the steps of Beauty and the Beast. 4. John Pomeroy was the Supervising Animator for John Smith, and watched several Errol Flynn movies, as reference for the movements of the character. Once the look of Smith was finalized, fourteen other animators were drafted in to make him come to life. 3. As all the actors recorded their dialogue separately, they did not meet each other until the premiere. Mel Gibson did not attend the premiere because he was away filming Braveheart. As of 2019, Irene Bedard (who voiced Pocahontas) still has not met him. 2. Shirley "Little Dove" Custalow-McGowan, a descendant of the real Pocahontas, worked on the film as a consultant. When she discovered that there would be a lot of artistic license with history, she left the project. 1.
