Part 1 Acomi and Turk182 talk about creating characters and ownership of those characters. Specifically, the creation of Marvel Comics character Wolverine a.k.a. Logan a.k.a. James Howlett. Debuting in The Incredible Hulk #180 & #181 (1974). Created by comic writer Len Wein (co-creator of DC Comics character Swamp Thing, and Marvel Comics characters Storm and Nightcrawler; amongst others), artist John Romita Sr. Artist Herb Trimpe drew the character in his debut issues, with writer Roy Thomas as the editor. Having always been known as a creation of Wein and Romita Sr., Roy Thomas, now (or, for the past few years), is claiming he's also a co-creator. He claims, that the idea of the character came from him. As the book's editor, he suggested they create a short, fierce, Canadian character to fight Hulk. With Wein, Romita Sr., Trimpe, and Stan Lee having passed away, it's RoyThomas' story versus... Roy Thomas. Acomi and Turk debate the issues of creatorship, who they believe are the true creators of Wolverine, and how much input entitles someone to be called a co-creator. #OMTWF #Acomi #Turk182 #KorovaEntertainment #Marvel #MarvelComics #Wolverine #Hulk #LenWein #JohnRomitaSr #HerbTrimpe Follow Acomi on Twitter at @AcomiDraws and on Instagram at AcomiDraws. Few actors have become so intrinsically tied to a character they've played like Hugh Jackman and his portrayal of James Howlett, better known as Logan, the Wolverine. A central figure in 20th Century Fox's long-running X-Men film series, Logan is a mutant with an accelerated healing ability and a bad temper who sprouts bony, claw-like protrusions from his hands when it comes time for some down and dirty knuckle-dusting. His mutant abilities ensure that he's been around for a lot longer than most people, as well as put him on the military's radar as they seek to hone him into a finely tuned killing machine through a secret project dubbed “Weapon X.” When he has a fictional metal known as “adamantium” grafted onto his bones, he becomes nigh-on indestructible—until age finally catches up to him. As his body begins to break down after nearly two centuries of trauma, Logan trudges on toward the finish line, finally ready to be done with this life in which everything and everyone he loves passes on while he remains. Logan is a film that masterfully deconstructs the superhero film genre, unmaking and profoundly humanizing its central hero. By embracing the mythic dimensions of tragic heroes, Logan subverts audience expectations at every corner to tell a seemingly new story through the rediscovery of classic mythological tropes. It was the great conviction of author C. S. Lewis that, even as adults, the world is best seen through the eyes of a child with stories. Those stories have the potential to “baptize” the imagination, priming one to receive in faith the mythic dimensions of the biblical story, and therefore the gospel. This is a conversation about the Marvel character the Wolverine and the film Logan which can be used by the cultural apologist as a springboard to talk about the truth of Christianity. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Cole Burgett about his article, “Deconstructionism and the Gospel of Hope in Logan.” **Editor's Note: This article contains spoilers for Logan.** https://www.equip.org/article/deconstructionism-and-the-gospel-of-hope-in-logan/Please note this article will be fully accessible by the public in the future, to get early access to read it now, please see our FAQ section on Early Access to Online-Exclusive Articles by clicking here. We had the pleasure of catching up with Billy Raffoul over Zoom video! For those that have not watched our face-to-face interview with Billy at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego in 2019, you can view it at BringinitBackwards.com.Singer/songwriter Billy Raffoul released his debut full-length album International Hotel on August 28th on Interscope Records.  International Hotel was recorded with two microphones in Raffoul’s girlfriend’s room in his hometown of Leamington, Ontario.  The simplicity of that approach is perfectly suited to the rugged intimacy of Raffoul’s songwriting, and to the Americana-leaning sensibilities he brought to the making of International Hotel. International Hotel is available now at all digital retailers.Earlier this month Raffoul shared the first track from International Hotel, the sparsely arranged “What Makes a Man.” A profoundly moving protest song that speaks out against systemic racism “What Makes a Man” was the final song written and recorded for International Hotel marks the first time Raffoul ever recorded a song with harmonica. The song’s homespun austerity also extends to its video, shot in warm black-and-white and quietly centered on Raffoul’s impassioned performance.Mainly co-produced by Raffoul and his longtime collaborator Justin Zuccato, International Hotel takes its title from a bar in Leamington — the very spot his musician father frequents after finishing up his own gigs. After opening on the title track (a loving tribute to Raffoul’s father and his lifelong devotion to rock-and-roll), the album offers up a dozen more songs rooted in his sharply observed storytelling. With those songs encompassing everything from treasured family history to clear-eyed social commentary to a heartrending ballad of a comic-book hero on “The Ballad of James Howlett,” International Hotel closes out with “Massey Hall”: an homage to the venue of Raffoul’s dreams, a Toronto theater where Neil Young recorded Live at Massey Hall 1971.Track listing for International Hotel:1. Truth Be Told (I Like You)13. Massey Hall Growing up in the small farming town of Leamington, Ontario, Raffoul first discovered his gift for songwriting at age ten, thanks in no small part to the influence of his father — a musician who’s opened for everyone from Joe Cocker to Bon Jovi. After landing his first paying gig (playing to long-haul drivers at a local truck stop), Raffoul began performing at nearby bars and clubs at age 16, often driving into Detroit for shows. He eventually connected with a manager and moved down to Nashville. Soon after scoring a deal with Interscope Records, Raffoul released the critically acclaimed song “Driver,” which he then followed with his debut EP 1975 (a 2018 release featuring the fan favorite “Acoustic”). Arriving in spring 2019, his sophomore EP Running Wild found him joining forces with leading producers like Greg Kurstin, as well as collaborating with such boundary-breaking artists as singer/songwriter Julia Michaels. In April 2020, Raffoul returned with his third EP, A Few More Hours at YYZ. Over the past few years, he’s opened for heavyweights like Kings of Leon, X Ambassadors, and NEEDTOBREATHE, captivating crowds with his understated yet intensely passionate stage presence. After postponing the West Coast run of his A Few More Hours At…2020 North American Tour, Raffoul found himself back in Leamington and immediately took to Instagram Live for intimate performances from his father’s home. Since the launch of the Still Social Distancing Tour 2020, he’s joined forces with special guest artists like Alec Chambers, Zac Barnett, Caitlyn Smyth, Wrabel, John Paul White, and more.We want to hear from you! I am your friend, Chirsty.BR: Good afternoon. I'm Brittany.M: I'm Michelle.C: Recently, the weather is cold. Have you seen some heart-warming films?BR: Of course. Let me tell you.BR: Yeah, the film is named 超时空同居M: Okay, it sounds like a science fiction.BR: Well, it's also a romantic comedy.M: Oh no. I feel hurt since I'm a single dog.BR: 哈哈!M: I can't wait to know what it is about.BR: It is about Gu Xiao Jiao of 2018 and Lu Ming of 1999 live in the same room by accident due to space time overlap. They can go back and forth freely between the ages.M: I think it’s novel in romantic movies.BR: They go from disliking to cooperation. Finally, they fall in love with each other. However, Lu Ming of 2018 appears and controls everything.M: Two identical people?BR: Uhmm. In 19 years, Lu Ming has changed from a kind man to a bad man with ambition. After knowing the truth, Lu Ming of 1999 changes the decision and they have a happy ending.M: I think that kind and evil are in the blink of an eye.BR: At the same time, its theme song is appealing.M: OK. I will listen to it for a moment. M: Then, I will also introduce a romantic movie called “Titanic”.C: It is enough classic.M: This is a film directed by 詹姆斯·卡梅隆,starring by 莱昂纳多·迪卡普里奥,凯特·温斯莱特. The story follows the Titanic hitting an iceberg in 1919, and it tells the love between a poor painter and a rich girl.C: I remember it has won the 70th Academy Awards, 11 awards.M: Yeah, 莱昂纳多plays Jack, he is a humorous, handsome and affectionate man. 凯特plays Rose, she is a socialist. At last, she lived bravely for Jack. Their action was well received by the audience.C: But it's ending is tragic.M: Sometimes, tragedies are also enlightening.C: What a coincidence! I will introduce 悲伤逆流成河 to our listeners.BR: It's also tragic.C: Do you know Campus Bullying?BR: I have heard before. It is so terrible.C: Yeah. The heroin, 易遥 is a victim. Because of aninadvertent infection with a venereal disease, after being exposed by唐小米. All of people laugh and bully her.BR: Does anyone help her?C: 齐铭and 顾森西help her. But they're in different ways. I like the latter way. However, by accident, 顾森西's sister顾森湘was murdered. Someone framed it to易遥.BR: No one trust her? Finally, I know, she threw herself into the river.C: But顾森西helped her because of love.BR: Wow. Youth film is so wonderful.C: Love is also.B: Hey, Emily. By the way, Marvel Comics great Stan Lee died a few days ago. After hearing that, I feel sorry for him.E: What a pity! I am a Marvel fans, too. So, now, let’s talk about a famous work, Wolverine.B: OK. Here we go!E: The film talks that in 1845, James Howlett, a boy living in Canada, saw his father killed by groundskeeper, Thomas Logan. The trauma activated the boy's mutation: bone claws protruded from his knuckles, and he killed Thomas, who revealed that he was James's real father. B: James fled along with Thomas's son Victor Creed, who is thus James's half-brother. They spent the next century as soldiers, fighting in the American Civil War, both World Wars, and the Vietnam War. In Vietnam, Victor killed a senior officer.E: James defended Victor and the two were sentenced to execution by firing squad, which they survived. Major William Stryker approached them in military custody, and offered them membership in Team X, a group of mutants including Agent Zero, Wade Wilson, John Wraith, Fred Dukes, and Chris Bradley. They have joined the team for a few years, but the group's disregard for human life caused James to leave.B: While Logan and Victor joined forces to fight off Weapon XI, Kayla was mortally wounded leading the captive mutants to Professor Charles Xavier and safety. After Logan killed Weapon XI, Stryker arrived and shot Logan in the head with adamantium bullets, rendering Logan unconscious. Before Stryker could shoot Kayla, she grabbed him and used her mutant power to persuade him to turn around and walk away until his feet bled. Logan regained consciousness but had lost his memory. He noticed his dog tags read "Logan" on one side and "Wolverine" on the other. He paused upon noticing Kayla's body, but did not recognize herE: The words touch me is that "Countless choices define our fate, each choice, each moment, a ripple in a river of time. Enough ripples and you change the tide, for the future is never truly set." B: It's so touching. And, “Wolverine” has also a strong cast.E: Wow, what's it?B: They're director Gavin Hood, actor Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Lynn Collins, Ryan Reynolds, Kdvin Durand, Taylor Kitsch, Scott Adkins, Troye Sivan and so on. E: The producer is the patriarch of American comics---Stan Lee, who is known to us. Its product company is Marvel Comics. What's more, it is shot at Texas, American Grand canyon, New York. B: The film consists of fantasy, science, love and action. Now let's see the behind-the-scenes look. E: “Wolverine” was shown on 5th March 2009 in China. That's to say: After “Spider-Man” “Iron Man”, it is the third time to import films concerning hero on May Day continuously.B: More interestingly, Gavin Hood explained why he wanted to direct “Wolverine”: “Partly because I need to prepare tuition fees for my daughter. Actually, I'm not expert at directing it.”BR: The happy moment passes so fast. It's time to say goodbye.C: The weather is changeable. Pay attention to keeping warm, so that we can prevent cold.BR: And, the final examination is coming. Do you ready for it?C: Have a good review! And, see you next time!BR: Bye.

We debate whether or not Wolverine is a hero, anti-hero, or someone in between and whether or not Hugh Jackman should be the only man to step into the angry Canadian's boots. Now that he is the most well-known X-Men and the title character of one of the best comic book movies of all time, why does he matter and how did he get from a Hulk cameo to a fan-favorite?

And what better way to celebrate the world's 2nd largest country than by talking about it's favorite fictional son, Logan the Wolverine? Ben, Patrick, and Ryan interview Sigrid Alvarez and Emma Conway who have written a "totally real" paper about Logan's healing abilities (get the PDF here) and why Logan may be more amphibian than mammal. Want to learn more about Wolverine? Why not check out this graphic novel?   00:33:48 - James Howlett is known for excessive drinking, but the Paleopals try to promote responsibility. Ben has some Canadian water, because he's the most responsible of us all.  Patrick snubs Canada with a Koko Brown Ale from Kona Brewing out of Hawaii, possibly the least Canadian state in the entire US. And Ryan has a cerveza Atlas, yet another in his series of Panamanian brews.   00:39:41 - Much as Ben may try to derail the conversation with proclamations of Canadian superiority, Patrick and Ryan see some hard truths (especially in light of some real enigmatic malware) in the preview for Goodbye World in this week's Trailer Trash Talk!   00:55:25 - A group of Canadian scientists have worked very hard to create a system to send text messages via alcoholic mist because of... reasons. The Paleopals grope for a good explanation of this system's utility, but absent even that can agree that the idea itself is quite neat.   01:05:06 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like mist-based text messages, no one is quite sure of their purpose but we're pretty sure they matter on some level. Ben is cut off from answering an e-mail about Canadian libraries from Andie H. (though he did speak to the issue on the LASER podcast) and is forced to confront some harsh criticism from Steven S.
