Grace [charis] is first and foremost the gift of the Spirit who justifies and sanctifies us. But grace also includes the gifts [charismata] that the Spirit grants us to associate us with his work, to enable us to collaborate in the salvation of others and in the growth of the Body of Christ, the Church. There are sacramental graces, gifts proper to the different sacraments. There are furthermore special graces, also called charisms after the Greek term used by St. Paul and meaning "favor," "gratuitous gift," "benefit." Whatever their character - sometimes it is extraordinary, such as the gift of miracles or of tongues - charisms are oriented toward sanctifying grace and are intended for the common good of the Church. Janice points out that if your customers are in the digital pond, you have to be right there with them. 89% of top-performing salespeople find great success on platforms like LinkedIn and Twitter. Janice also shares that 75% of B2B buyers and 84% of executives use social media to make buying decisions. They're influential, they have large budgets, and they buy frequently. That's why it's important to sell online. Organizations need to train and coach alongside the seller. They often just give them training on selling and shove them off and say “Go and do it.” Janice emphasizes that it just doesn't work. There needs to be a fundamental mindset shift, especially for an older person. It can take them longer. You need to develop and move people from where they are one level at a time. You've got to walk alongside the salesperson until they get it.  7 strategies to supercharge your social selling effectiveness Social selling is about finding relevant people to have a relevant conversation to serve them more efficiently. Relevant people are ideal customers, stakeholders, and influencers. You have to understand your target market so you know they are relevant to your particular goal. A relevant conversation demonstrates that you understand what they're looking for, what's useful to them, and what will help move them forward. In this episode, Janice shared 7 things that can help you do that. Nail down your ideal customers (the people that love what you do). Define and optimize your personal profile for sales. Your profile is the window to your expertise and personality.  If you have a website, people can find you through content on LinkedIn, which might drive them to download something on your website. People spend far too much time on their websites, not enough on their social profiles. If that profile doesn't represent you, they won't travel through it.  Engage and connect rather than connect and engage. You do this with your personality. Engaging comes with understanding your audience and getting on their radar. Create visibility through your content that both engages and educates. It's got to be relevant to them and help move them forward. Turn social conversations into sales opportunities. Social selling is about developing relevant conversations with relevant people. Ultimately, you want it to lead to sales. Take the social conversation offline (or online) to a targeted meeting with them where they know you'll talk about a solution with them. Create a social selling customer growth plan. Once you understand your customers, you need to systemize the process so it is scalable. You want to attract more people to have more conversations to create more sales opportunities.  The attributes that help a social seller succeed Social selling is about building opportunities to have relevant conversations. But you have to have confidence in your abilities. That's why someone needs to walk with you to help develop the skills and confidence you may not have yet.  Janice believes that you have to engage with personality. Use your humor, your quirky stance on the world, and make it personal. You need a tribe of people that identify with your core values and your interests. It gives you a great starting point. You need to confidently talk about personal things that will engage other people. You have to do this to show that you're three-dimensional. Janice recommends that you:  Share three pieces of content and ask questions over a couple of weeks. Why? To engage with the people that answer. A question develops into a conversation.  Co-create with the customer. Understand that you don't have the answer to everything. But by developing your listening and questioning skills, you'll co-create a solution to get more buy-in.  Lastly, you must love what you do. If you do, you'll make a difference.  What are some tools and techniques to improve digital selling? Keep listening for Janice's thoughts! Top 3 digital selling dos and don'ts What are Janice's dos and don'ts?  Never contact anyone unless you've done your research on them. You must have a feel of who the person is and what they're about—even if you have to speak to someone else first. Why? First impressions count. Always use that sense of someone in your connection. Connect with them using your personality.  Never connect and sell immediately on LinkedIn. No one wants to hear a pitch immediately.  Don't wrap a pitch telling someone about yourself. They never asked. Instead, ask them a question about something you've already read on their blog. Ask about them and their interests. Let them know you want to learn more.  Do not connect and engage—engage and connect.  Read their blogs and posts, like and comment. When you comment intelligently, you're demonstrating an interest in them. You can start a conversation. Janice, a full blooded seminole Indian, kicks her story off by sharing what It was like growing up in multiple “Tourist Traps” all across Florida. In the 60's, Indian families would have staged villages built that would resemble real Indian villages. They made money by living in them day in and day out all while tourists would come and interact with them as if they were still living off the land as their ancestors did. While they constantly moved from one tourist trap to another, there were many occasions where they would find themselves homeless. Janice's father was an alcoholic, and where they ended up, always depended on how bad his drinking got. It's easy to imagine how this lifestyle didn't exactly provide a whole lot of stability for Janice, her sister, and two brothers.  Janice recalls feeling like her childhood innocence was completely stripped from her, as early as the age of 6. Between her alcoholic father, being homeless and moving around all the time, and her parents always fighting - fear quickly became her most familiar emotion. By the age of 12, Janice had been sexually molested for years, by more than one person. It was right around the time when the sexual abuse began, that Janice remembers going numb. Before ever getting the chance to understand that she was a victim, the sexual and emotional trauma had already began to deeply consume her.  It wouldn't be long before Janice began acting out in school, using drugs, and eventually getting to a place so dark that taking her own life seemed like the only option. After stealing her stepfather's gun, Janice had made up her mind. Nobody, not even Janice, could have been prepared for what happened next.  As fate would have it, it wasn't her life that she would be taking that night. One year later, Janice was tried as an adult for the murder of a convenient store clerk. I've know Janice on the periphery for 13 years and when I saw she had a book coming out I had to interview her for the podcast.  The transformation she has embraced, the passion she brings…  She is so dedicated to community and has such a momentous energy…  I new it was going to be fun, profound, and perhaps irreverently entertaining.  The universe did not disappoint. Notes:(Janice B Mulligan, aka Janice M. Just released an awesome book of daily inspirations called “Power in the Pause”, and her story "Unexpected Outcomes" is in JB Owens compilation “Ignite Happiness”).Janice's book “Power in the Pause: Daily Inspirations, A Path Toward Change” can be found here www.sobrietyrocks365.comJB Owens compilation “Ignite Happiness”, which I reference, can be found here: (Janice's story begins on page 108) https://www.amazon.com/dp/1792341717/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_JQJNDZYN8CEERCR97RT0I read her 4 or 5 page story in the book “Ignite Happiness” and I was sobbing…  it was profound for me…  there were the suicides that were around her…  and she tells how she had this moment of awareness that she is these teenagers that are killing themselves but perhaps she is just taking a longer route…   Which leads me to this question “Was I just so connected to source in the moment that like it was so impactful for me or do you find that people resonate with these stories?”  I find that people resonate, it connects me with others.  “I can identify, I understand, I know what it is to endure loss, I know what it is to endure loss as a young child.”I had said forget you to source…  and that's ok.  You can come back.Surrender.She was a Marine for 5 years.  From the age of 19.  She's 6 foot tall…  She did not look like her average Marine. She has a Son who's 28…  She might be considered a Jerry Springer show, because she has 5 kids with 3 babies daddies.  “they are all mine”.Her addictions start when she was 12…  “I'm not much but I'm all I think about.”  I don't have to do that anymore…  You can always come back to where you're at?What's Christmas like?  Christmas now is much different.  She's proud of her son who is buying a house, has girlfriend and has a dog… There were some heavy Christmases, there were a lot of feelings…  no one wants to have a separated household…There was a time when my oldest daughter moved to her dads…  It was not in my plan…  There was a lot of anxiety and feelings…  My daughter hated me.  There was still a lot of healing that needed to transpire.  Perhaps I created a situation that was unapproachable.  My kids were afraid of me…  I was not very soft. The Christmases got better…  Everyone spends the night at my house :).  There is less anxiety that comes from the holidays.Expectations and control.  Let them down.  “What if we all just relax and enjoy?” JB Owen - she put together the compilation book of the different authors…  There are 42 authors in “Ignite Happiness”.  A friend introduces Janice to JB to perhaps get help with Janice  writing a daily inspirations book (which becomes Janice's “Power in the Pause” book)…  And JB invites Janice to put her story into “Ignite Happiness”.How about the bottom you talk about in “Ignite Happiness” which you sprung from 13 years ago? I was 36, I had 4 kids, I was planning a wedding.  I was literally exhausted I was dying.  I was being eaten alive from the inside out…  I was in the wedding dress store and I had that bitch slap, that god shot… The ignite action steps at the end…  “Tell me about those moments.”  It was everything I needed that I didn't know I needed…  “Being able to open yourself up and crack yourself open and show your kids that your vulnerable and that you love them is powerful.”  “10 years ago I was not cracked open I was not very loving…  Today I get to be loving.”  I don't have to be the hard ass…  I've learned so much from my daughters. There is nothing more powerful than losing my shit and sobbing in front of one of my girls.  And letting them know it is ok to be hurt, it's ok to make a mistake, it's ok to be let down, it's ok to be disappointed.  I'm not that strong, and to let my kids know that is more powerful than anything.Let's talk about your book “Power In The Pause”.  How does that come about?  It's published under Janice M. due to the anonymous nature.  After hemming and hawing about asking to ask for permission to quote other works…  A friend encourages her, “Why don't you just ask?”  And through serendipitous events the answer is a quick “yes”…  JB was perfect for her and the  “Power In The Pause”.  “Wow, I wrote that!”  …If I'm not connected to source and I'm not doing what I need to do in the morning than then something like this will throw me off course. I'm an amateur, I'm not a professional, I have to not take myself so seriously.I was annoying, I was intolerant, I was unstable.  My higher power put people in my life to stabilize me to show me the way.Your significant others sacrifice some of your time with them when you embrace recovery.  It  can be hard. My kids are amazing…  If somebody is listing to this and waiting for their kid to call them and tell em that they love em, you got it wrong.  It doesn't work like that.  It's my job as their mom to let them know I'm proud of them and to let them know that I love them and to let them know I'm thinking of them…  …they love me and I love them.  They feel safe to come to me and to tell me stuff that I don't want to know.  They know to show up.  They know to show up for each other.  I have these daughter and they show up  When I was that age I wasn't able to show up.Her soul shed? I thought it would be good to give a spotlight to some of the amazing guest and insights they shared on Scale Your Sales Podcast review of 2020 For those that do not know me, I am Janice B Gordon, the Customer Growth Expert, and founder of the Scale Your Sales podcast.  My clients are mid-cap companies that love to solve client problems but hate that existing customer revenue is flat, or that new incumbents are beating them to deals. I help solve this problem of flat-lining revenues through the Scale Your Sales Framework that connects leading-edge capabilities to secure, retain, and grow key client relationships for long-term value and partnership.    Unfortunately, I cannot mention all 50 guests of Scale Your Sales podcast. Rather than say 'I can't do that' - it is 'I can't do that yet', then you keep trying all different angles to find a way through. #052: Bev Hancock - Shift the Trust Needle and Make it About Them The companies who are going for good to great are the companies who are focusing in on loyalty and retention. It is just so much easier to keep your clients when they are part of your family. When you have a trusted relationship with your client, eventually the conversations are no longer a sales call, it is how are we going to work together. #048: Colleen Stanley - Demonstrates Empathy with Emotional Intelligence for Sales Leadership Everybody is looking down all the time at their smartphones, Colleen says, empathy is a paying attention skill, which means you got to lookup around and be perfectly present. #049: Tom Williams - Why Buyer Centred Selling is How Modern Sellers Engage & Collaborate with Buyers Tom is big on preparation for sales calls; it comes across that you are ready, you are confident, you ask better questions. No sports team goes and plays a game without preparation. Surgeons or a Pilot has a checklist, sales must be no different.   #060: David Priemer – the author of Sell the Way You Buy, says Salespeople Get the Idea of Selling Value All Wrong Emotion is the quickest way to get that value to create that rapport and Emotions help the customer understand how they will benefit from working with you. #055: Liz J Simpson - Who Best Understands Their Buyer Will Accelerate Results Digital gives you a direct line to your buyers said Liz and it gives you ways to build thought leadership. When you have the sales foundations, and then you layer on a digital strategy, to accelerates results. I love her, Big Money Movement that focuses on shattering the revenue disparity facing women in business.   Jill Konrath is a shero of mine and many others, she has led the way for many women in Sales. #053 Jill Konrath - Why Sales Leaders Must Learn to Lean Back Some top leaders who are really doing well in sales leadership always focused on their people. The top leaders have loyalty and connection with their people, their people know that they were being supported throughout these tough times as well as in good times. #040: Rakhi Voria - Passionate About Retaining Women in Sales Women in sales have barely increased in the last decade, Rakhi quotes gender bias in sales with only 1 in 5 women VP of sales. There are some genuine issues that women in sales experience, in what is a male-dominated industry. Rakhi talks about the importance of mentors and developing your network. 031: Adrian Swinscoe - How COVID19 Exposes What Excellent CX is and its Impact on Sales The difference between customer experience and the customers' experience is a country mile, say Adrian. Customer experience could be a thing that gets done in organisations, while the customers' experience has got nothing to do with the organisation, it is about what the customer experiences when they deal with the brand.  Sales is an intrinsic part of the whole customer journey with a particular brand and therefore, it is a massive part of what happens that makes up your customers’ experience. 021 - Sam Robinson: Sales Enablement Supports the Drive to Business Performance Sam said that their programme in Sage has helped their salespeople see that social selling is a route to market. Sellers runs away from feedback, but feedback is essential information, that feeds the three things salespeople must get in balance - Skillset, Mindset and Structure. 016 Elinor Stutz - Trusted Relationships is the Differentiator for Selling Well You must build trust upfront, grooming a professional personal relationship and understanding what is important to the customer first.  Elinor says if there is another preferred partner that the buyer is considering, then suggest being the backup supplier and ask them to test one of your smaller services upfront so you prove you can deliver outstanding service.   This last popular spotlight episode achieved double the downloads of any other. I thought I would start first with my book Business Evolution: Creating Growth in a Rapidly Changing World, I wrote this nearly six years ago. So much of my experiences are wrapped up in this book and the strategies I live by. I thought it would be good for me to talk a bit more about it so that you can get to know me, maybe you might even buy the book, Business Evolution by Janice B Gordon. The book brings together a lot of my experiences and history and things that I've done; I often say that absolutely everything that you do, whether it's good or bad, is meant to teach you something, meant to move you on. It is often when you come later in life you realise, oh had I not done this at that point then I will not be able to do this at this point. Even though that was not necessarily a good experience, it challenges you, so you learn a lot. I had worked in financial services in sales in the 80s. I did my MBA at Cranford School of Management and then worked with a construction company where I systemised the operations and managed everything for them. It enabled them to grow with all the policies and the accounting system. Then I worked with a customer experience innovation consultancy, and this embedded the customer experience because they introduced it to me, customer experience. It was a revelation to me. I understood through many of the customer journeys that I did for the companies I worked with HSBC, AOL, and so forth. Lots of the projects, I understood that customers are the best inventors and creators. I mention this in the book, the engineers or the designers would sit there. During customer journeys, experiences and customers always found the shortcuts, and so that was quite a revelation. The importance of asking your customers because they are usually right, they have a valid voice, and they are often not at the table. Now when I talk to my clients about this and say, do you have the customer sitting at the table, literally have a seat that says customer on it? Often, we are so wrapped up in our world, and I certainly understand that running a small business working with other colleagues and even though I talk to many medium-sized and larger businesses it is precisely the same. We all are so focused on what is going on in our own lives, in our own business. We forget about all of that out there, and all of that out there, are your customers; the people that put food on your table. That is why it is important to have like a physical aspect of a customer in the business to remind you always. Is this the right message for that customer? Is this something that they would buy and approve of? To even get the focus groups of customers, your top customers, take them out to lunch, talk to them. Ask them questions, get them to test trial; they are your best inventors and creators. You need to keep them close to your company. I talk about all this in the book. But let me start at the beginning of the book. It all about what I call the 'Essential 4Ps'. The 'Essential 4Ps' is Personality, Purpose, Pleasure and Process. I wrote Business Evolution: Creating, to explain the relevant principles of the ‘Essential 4Ps’. Modern business has fundamentally changed, it is not about selling in fact selling has become a dirty word. It is about Attracting and Building business relationships, but how do we do this? The people we are naturally attracted to you are more like you than unlike you. Essential 4Ps taps into being, finding, attracting, communicating, and pleasing more ‘people like you’. In business you must magnetically attract your customers, to do this you need to magnetise our personality. The ‘Essential 4Ps’ are your guiding business principles to gain business alignment and give your business that personality that will attract more like you. Personality asks, ‘who are you and what is great about you?’ How can people identify with you until they know who you are, Personality helps you to uncover your values and character that you want to be identifiable. It is the underlying currency in a global economy to help customers identify and engage with you and your business. Personality determines your core values that become your authentic promise to your customers. Purpose enables you to clarify what you do that no one else does in the way you do it (for your customers). We are all unique and different. This is your WHY, your reason for being and doing. It is your existential purpose and answers the question “what business are you in?” It is our unique view that you offer the world. Some people will be attracted to our unique view and others will not, not everyone is our customer and rather than have a scattergun you want people to self-select you. You do not want anyone; you want the right one because the wrong one only cost you money. Pleasure prepares you to understand and to serve your customers desires, wants and needs. This is establishing the relationship. Ask and you shall receive, many companies do not enquire their reason for being, how they are doing and how they can do better – it is crazy! The aim of Pleasure is to involve your customers (and employees) to align the strategic goals with your customer’s specific needs and expectations. Process positions your customer’s central to your business, so they get what they want, when they want it and how they want it. Your business processes must align with your company purpose and your strategic goals; Process must be made ready to consistently deliver. The process must meet your customer expectations and very occasionally WOW or surprise your customer. Why the Essential 4Ps? Your company competes in a crowded global market and as the representative; you are the first presentation of your business that customers, suppliers, and stakeholder meet, judge, and buy. Tom Peters said in Fast Company magazine, “All of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called you.”   Being You – personality Being your best you – purpose Being your best you for your customer – pleasure Being your best you for your best customer consistently – process. In a socially connected global economy, you must engage with your customer and your business process must align with your purpose. Essential 4Ps will reduce complexity and improve transparency. The 4Ps will give you the confidence in presenting your declared purpose making you accountable to your purpose, your customers, and your business. Essential 4Ps gives you the freedom to operate within a framework of your authentic business purpose and achieve higher goals for your customers.
