About Jennifer Fondrevay: Jennifer J. Fondrevay is the Founder of Day1 Ready™, a consultancy that advises forward-thinking business leaders, owners, and C-Suite executives on how to prepare for the human capital challenges of M&A. As a Fortune 500 C-Suite “survivor” of three multibillion-dollar acquisitions, Jennifer has been on all sides of the deal equation. She saw countless growth strategies fail due to a workforce that couldn't pivot and adapt as quickly as leadership anticipated. In this episode, Jordan and Jennifer discuss: The personas that emerge during mergers and acquisitions The Dominatrix and Black Widow personas What does not get discussed in mergers and acquisitions Why you should be truthful to your team about threats Key Takeaways If you are not truthful with your team, they will see through you and lose their trust. Don't say lies to calm and placate people in an uncertain environment. Leaders need to be warriors during times of significant change Not every abrasive person in the workplace is a sociopath or a bully. Many are that way because of their cultural background and their self-esteem being tied to their ability to achieve great things. Black widow personas often act like your friend while slowly positioning themselves to take your role or ascend past you. Watch out for their signals and red flags so that you won't be blindsided. Leaders need to be familiar with the emotions and personas that emerge so they are able to calm the underlying fear and increase empathy and collaboration “Let go of your title. “The payday is a lovely part. But don't let that drive how you look for your partner, particularly if you want to leave a legacy worthwhile,” explains Jennifer Fondrevay, founder and Chief Humanity Officer of Day1 Ready™, a consultancy that advises business owners, leaders, and executives on how to prepare for mergers and acquisitions. Jennifer has survived three major multibillion dollar acquisitions and is the author of Now What? A Survivor's Guide for Thriving through Mergers and Acquisitions. Today, she shares her tips for changing the narrative on mergers and acquisitions.Mergers and acquisitions have a bad reputation, in part because statistics show that 70-90% of deals fail. However, it is important to still see a merger or acquisition as a viable growth strategy. This type of deal is not just about finances, but is really more similar to a marriage in that you really need to be very intentional about who you choose as a partner. It also helps to remember that when considering the valuation of your business, your people contribute value as well. From the very start, you should consider your communication strategy for how you will get your people on board with and even excited for the coming changes, otherwise you risk losing talent due to miscommunication. People are typically wary of change and aversive to uncertainty. This is why even just the words ‘mergers and acquisitions' often cause people to stress and worry for the future. When you are upfront and clear about your vision for the business and communicate the plan with your employees, they are more likely to rally around you and buy into your vision. Quotes“Consider a merger or an acquisition as a viable growth strategy play.” (2:26-2:31 | Jennifer)“The payday is a lovely part. But don't let that drive how you look for your partner, particularly if you want to leave a legacy worthwhile.” (5:05-5:15 | Jennifer)“If you're thinking just financials and you haven't thought about, ‘how am I going to explain this in a way that gets people really rallied around it and excited', you're going to lose some talent.” (7:31-7:41 | Jennifer)“People ultimately embrace change and they understand that things have changed, but what they don't like is prolonged uncertainty.” (8:22-8:29 | Jennifer)“Start thinking about what that communications piece is when you're thinking about the deal. Don't wait until you've made the announcement.” (29:23-29:28 | Jennifer) “Being crystal clear on your value is what helps you to embrace uncertainty.” (38:19-38:24 | Jennifer)LinksConnect with Welcome to ElomaInstagram: @welcometoelomaWebsite: WelcometoEloma.comWeekly Email Newsletter: bit.ly/RIXEmail Connect with Jennifer Fondrevay:LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/jennifer-fondrevayWebsite: www.Jenniferjfondrevay.comConnect with KileySocial: @kileypeters + Linkedin.com/in/kileypetersWebsites: RAYNEIX.com ,
Jennifer Fondrevay known as the 'MA Whisperer', is Andy Lopata's guest on this week's Connected Leadership Podcast. She is the author of the satirical book 'NOW WHAT? A Survivors Guide for Thriving Through Mergers and Acquisitions' and advises companies on the unexpected people challenges that may arise during the process. Jennifer outlines the stages employees may face during a merger including grief, putting a strain on relationships and uncertainty of the future. She emphasises the importance of connecting with the frontliners, listening to employees and valuing and respecting their comments. Preparation for possible challenges, transparency, understanding the culture of the companies involved can all help to move towards consensus. The environment post-merger/acquisition is largely a question of morale; involving competition, collaboration and 'survivors guilt'.

One of the primary reasons that a merger may fail is less about strategic concerns, operational issues, or finances. Rather, it may be that the two companies' embedded cultures cannot be easily aligned. Some issues may surface during the due diligence phase but identifying how the cultures are going to work together is paramount. Memoirs can be the riskiest forms of writing because for this kind of book to get traction, it has to have appeal to more people than your mother and father. Laura Conklin, a nurse highly experienced in many areas of her profession, had to carefully plan how she could take the lessons from her 50-year-long career so that it would provide value and education for those in her field. She also needed to choose unusual and entertaining stories to appeal to a general audience. Any memoirist can learn from her experiences in writing two books based on her professional life. What makes this podcast even more relevant and interesting is that her interviewer, Pat Iyer, has also acted as her editor. You will get a feel for the importance of having editorial assistance and support in writing your book. Laura will take you through her decision-making processes, how writing her second book was easier than the first, and why she is considering a third. She gives advice about the importance of making your nonfictional characters anonymous. And you may find that her enthusiasm about writing is contagious. You may take a look at your life and realize that you, too, have lessons to share. If so, happy writing. Join Pat and Laura in this episode of Writing to get Business Podcast. • What makes a memoir interesting to a larger circle than one’s family and friends? • How can a memoir serve as a business-generating tool? • In what ways can a memoir help to educate professionals involved in the area the book covers? • When you are an expert on your subject, how do you keep your writing professional and still appeal to a non-professional public? • Does your profession determine how opinionated your writing can be? Employee integration is such a critical aspect of any M&A transaction that it’s a wonder why most entrepreneurs spend too little time planning for and executing this element. As a result, they often end up trying to catch up with it during the due diligence phase, which is quite a bit late to say the least. When is the right time to start thinking about employee integration? What essential considerations do you have to take in its execution? Domenic Rinaldi goes deeper into this topic with Jennifer Fondrevay, an expert in the human capital aspect of M&A transactions. Jennifer Fondrevay told me something that I have never before heard from a guest. As a young child, she wanted to become the Ambassador to France and even more remarkably she continued to have that goal throughout her college years into graduate school. Jennifer’s father is French and her grandmother lived with them until she was three years old, so she learned French first, English second. She majored in French and political science undergrad and then continued with her graduate studies at the Thunderbird School Of Global Management where she studied international business, specializing in marketing and advertising. Jennifer figured if the ambassadorship didn’t materialize, her fallback plan was in marketing or advertising. It appears to have worked out extremely well, although Jennifer’s Dad still hopes that she’ll pursue the diplomacy route one day. As a Fortune 500 C-suite “survivor”, Jennifer has been on all sides of three separate multibillion-dollar mergers and acquisitions. She saw countless growth strategies fail due to a workforce that couldn’t pivot and adapt as quickly as leadership anticipated. While she may not be the Ambassador to France she has sharpened her diplomacy skills over the years. Today, Jennifer is the founder and Chief Humanity Officer of Day 1 Ready, a consultancy that advises forward-thinking business leaders, owners, and C suite executives on how to prepare for and manage the people challenges of business transitions, particularly mergers and acquisitions. Jennifer conducted extensive research for and authored the satirical survivor’s handbook, Now What? A Survivor's Guide to Thriving through Mergers and Acquisitions. She is a frequent keynote speaker at HR conferences and associations. In this week’s Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Jennifer’s journey: When her Harvard Business Review (HBR) article, “After a Merger, Don’t Let “Us vs. Them” Thinking Ruin the Company” went viral, Jennifer recognized the power and interest in a human-centric approach to business transformation, where employees are at the heart of the change. In addition to HBR, Jennifer also shares her expertise as a contributor to Fast Company, Inc, Thrive Global, and Forbes. Interview by Chicke Fitzgerald of the Game Changer Network as a part of the Best of the Game Changer series, showcased on C-Suite Network Companies around the globe are increasingly pursuing M&A as a growth strategy. Odds are, at some point in your career, your company will be one of them. Jennifer J. Fondrevay, an M&A expert who has led teams and brands through three separate multibillion-dollar acquisitions, reveals that these transitions are as stressful as a major loss or moving to another country. The normal human reactions of fear, anger, anxiety, and denial can make the experience hellish, make leading change overwhelming, and keep you from capitalizing on opportunities. To help you navigate the chaos and your emotions and see how M&A can, in fact, further your career, she has written NOW WHAT? the guide she wished for years ago. Based on 60 interviews with M&A integration survivors and practitioners, NOW WHAT?: Explains the drivers behind M&A so that you can anticipate what's coming and start to appreciate where the opportunities might be. Exposes the post-deal experience for what it is: a journey from denial to acceptance through the M&A stages of grief. Identifies the "cast of change" characters (e.g., the Former Rock Star, the Black Widow, etc.) and how to engage them. Helps you construct a total "survive and thrive" game plan for cultivating the right mindset, collaborating with the "other side," and finding your niche to succeed. NOW WHAT? helps anybody in the middle of it all, from C-suite executives to team leaders and players, come out stronger on the other side to help their companies do the same. ******** Jennifer J Fondrevay is the Founder and Chief Humanity Officer of Day1 Ready™, a consultancy that advises forward-thinking business leaders, owners, entrepreneurs and C-Suite executives on how to prepare for the human capital challenges of M&A. Bring on a human capital advisor – someone who can advise as to the people challenges you are going to face during an M&A transaction. Why do most acquisitions fail to meet expectations--and why do so many leaders struggle with the messages around an acquisition? Consultant and author Jennifer Fondrevay shares the value of a more human-centric approach to M&A with better communication.
While disruption may be the new norm in business, it doesn't have to be associated with the fear that often comes with it. Our guest Jennifer Fondrevay talks to Tom Stewart about how to ease your company--and your talent--through big changes.
Jennifer Fondrevay is the founder of Day One Ready, a consulting firm for business owners going through mergers and acquisitions. Jennifer specializes in keeping the human element of selling businesses in the forefront. Today, she tells me about her experiences with M&A and how she has met a need that many businesses don't think about until after the fact. That need, of course, is keeping your employees and more importantly middle managers in the loop about their future with your company once it is sold. Jennifer is in the process of writing a book for these middle managers and other team leaders who may find themselves working for a merged company. It's called Now What? A Survival Guide for Navigating and Thriving Through Acquisition. You will learn about: Jennifer's background in advertising and marketing. How she got into M&A. Who her book is for and why she launched Day One Ready. Why M&A is important to a business. Why incorrect valuation is the main reason businesses fail the first year after a merger. The culture clashes that happen after a sale. Painting a clear picture of a company's future is critical. How Jennifer provides transparency to the M&A process. The types of leaders you need to include in this process. Emphasizing how the employee fits into the new system. The stats of failure for an M&A business during the first year. The steps to considering people first. The importance of respect. Jennifer's parting advice. Takeaways: The fact is your company will change after a merger. You need to ask the right questions and include the right people in your company to create a uniform and clear representation of how the business will change for the employees just looking for marching orders. If you show respect to your employees it will go a long way. Links and Resources: GEXP Collaborative Jennifer's website Now What? A Survival Guide for Navigating and Thriving Through Acquisition About Jennifer: From working with a wide variety of Fortune 500 companies, start-ups, and small businesses, Jennifer has seen countless growth strategies fall short because a workforce cannot pivot to adapt to change as effectively as leadership anticipated. In hindsight, it's easy to see why people strategies broke down, but by then it's too late to intervene. Jennifer Fondrevay is the organizational transformation guru companies need to keep their growth strategies on track. While data is increasingly used to guide business decisions, Jennifer helps ensure the human component of a company's plan, such as culture, productivity, and retention remains a cornerstone of success during times of change rather than an inhibitor. Serving as an advisor to senior leadership and a liaison to middle managers, she is a much-needed resource who guides companies safely through unfamiliar waters.

Jennifer Fondrevay Understand The Human Side of Mergers & Acquisitions We leaders throw the term around like we’re high financiers – “M&A.” The reality is that mergers and acquisitions aren’t only about the numbers. There is a human impact, and too often that isn’t taken into consideration or it is not given the consideration that is due. You think nothing is going to change? Think again. It already has the moment M&A is mentioned, and your people know it. More mergers fail than succeed, and the ill-considered impact on employees is a big reason. The only thing we have in business is trust and credibility. If you give those up during the current M&A project, you’ve given up everything. Don’t undermine the trust you’ve built in the team.
