We start each guest encounter with a few minutes of meeting each other without words, through the language of our bodies, before we press record and bring it to a conversation. This is not a hard hitting agenda or getting to the bottom of things. It's about finding each other in the not-knowing. Listener Eden is looking ahead to how she'll finance medical school as someone who is in the disadvantaged category of applicants. One option she asked us to talk about is the Health Professions Scholarship Program offered by the US military, and she wanted to hear from someone who is in that program. M4 Wilson Fitzgerald gave us the details, some ideas about what it's like to be a physician in the military, the sacrifices he's decided to make to take advantage of the program, and how it's working out for him so far. PA faculty member Jeremy Nelson, M2 Fallon Jung, and M3 Happy Kumar helped discuss why it might not be a great idea to wait to start medical school so that you have time to save up tuition. And Dave pulls out a bunch of reels he's been saving in his drafts because he doesn't think they're any good. Spoiler alert: they should have stayed in his drafts--but you can see them on our Instagram anyway!

We love small-town events (duh) and we love the people who make those events happen (also duh.) Thus, we love this whole episode. We get to talk to Jeremy Nelson about an amazing market he's started and grown in his small town of Arthur, ND, and it's become kind of a whole thing. This episode is a transparent, honest look at what it looks like to do something big in a small town! About Jeremy: Jeremy was born in Northfield, MN and earned my BA in social studies secondary education in 2000 from Bethel College in St. Paul. He began his teaching career in St. Charles, MN, and spent six years teaching history along with several other courses, some of which were outside of his licensure area (welcome to small rural schools!), and helped create the girls' soccer program. Jeremy married his wife, Amanda, on New Year's Eve 2003 and they moved to Fargo, ND, in June of 2007 to pursue a career opportunity for Amanda. He continued his teaching career at Park Christian School in Moorhead, MN that fall and is now wrapping up his 17th year at that school. In 2017 they moved our family into a big old house in Arthur, ND, about 35 miles NNW of Fargo. In 2018, he received his Masters Degree in administration from Minnesota State University Moorhead, and in 2020 he stepped into the role of community coordinator for the City of Arthur, a fantastic side hustle that has allowed him to exercise his administrative chops. While in that position, he's been in charge of a monthly newsletter, submitting grant requests for municipal projects, and organizing a variety of community events. One big idea he brought to life is the Arthur Market, a farmer's and maker's market held three times each year. Started in 2020 as simply an event under the community coordinator position, the Arthur Market has grown to such an extent that during the winter of 2023/2024 he worked to establish it as a separate nonprofit LLC in the state of North Dakota. The heart of the organization is to support, promote, and collaborate with local small businesses in order to create a thriving rural community. In this episode, we cover: What the Arthur Market is and who it's for Lessons he's learned heading into year five of the market Why he decided it was time to create a separate nonprofit for the market Why impact is the lens he uses when thinking about community events Why having a sandbox mentality is so important Links and Resources Mentioned: Arthur Market Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093882913776 (Website coming soon!) “I love matzo! I eat matzah year-round as a snack.” —Ashley Albert “The goal is to do something out of the box that people wouldn't normally do to give matzo a rebrand.” —Jeremy Nelson Passover is a joyous springtime holiday that celebrates freedom and renewal. At the heart of the Passover seder meal and ritual is matzo, an unleavened flatbread that represents the hurried departure of the Israelites from ancient Egypt. Made simply of flour and water, matzo takes center stage during the week-long celebration as a symbol of the oppression the Jews endured. However, modern chefs and food entrepreneurs are putting a fresh spin on matzo, rebranding it as a versatile ingredient for light and healthful spring recipes. Companies like The Matzo Project are keeping matzo traditions alive while introducing new ways for people to celebrate Passover with healthful, innovative recipes. The Matzo Project Founder, Ashley Alberts returns to the Essential Ingredients Kitchen along with Floura's Chief Product Officer, Jeremy Nelson to share new recipes and partnerships that are continuing to push the boundaries of what's possible with Matzo. Tune in as Justine, Ashley, and Jeremy share the beginnings of The Matzo Project, Jeremy's journey as a plant-based chef, a recipe for Mexican Matzo Ball soup from Chef Fany Gerson, exciting new potential products from Ashley and Jeremy's collaboration, and more. Meet Ashley: Ashley Albert is an accomplished American voice actress, singer, and entrepreneur, born in 1973 in Miami Shores, Florida. With a multifaceted career spanning various industries, Ashley has left an indelible mark on each endeavor she undertakes. However, Ashley's entrepreneurial journey took an unexpected turn when she revisited a long-dormant idea from her past. In collaboration with her old friend Kevin Rodriguez, Ashley resurrected her concept of artisanal matzo, inspired by a childhood encounter with her neighbor's pizza shop. What began as a nostalgic reminiscence evolved into "The Matzo Project," a thriving enterprise that revolutionized the traditional Jewish cracker. With unwavering determination and a commitment to quality, Ashley and Kevin embarked on a journey to redefine matzo, infusing it with innovation and culinary excellence. Their meticulous attention to detail, coupled with a bold and unconventional approach to branding, propelled The Matzo Project to unprecedented success. From humble beginnings in a small bakery in Coney Island to securing coveted placements in prestigious establishments like Zingerman's and earning recognition from cultural icons like Oprah Winfrey, The Matzo Project has become a testament to Ashley's entrepreneurial vision and Kevin's dedication. While Kevin oversees the day-to-day operations of The Matzo Project, Ashley remains actively involved, infusing her unique perspective and creative flair into every aspect of the business. As she reflects on the remarkable journey they've embarked upon, Ashley's pride in their accomplishments is palpable, serving as a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and the enduring bond of friendship. February 23rd, 2022 we had our Boise Studio Grand Opening and what an amazing time! We started off the evening podcasting with Comedians Nate Ford and Tanya Cope. (Watch the full video here to see the eventual mayhem!) Chris and Nate take a shot of Jägermeister to begin the festivities and over the next couple of hours, many more comedians appear. Jake Martin took a seat in the studio next, followed by Jeremy Nelson, Sara Raffaella and Mirena Wool. We had the live feed going on Facebook, with our video camera set up in the hall to accommodate everyone. We had drinks and shots available, a bucket of treats to share and then Tilly the Comic appeared with a bag of homemade cookies! They were super delicious and although it's against podcasting ‘rules', we all ate, talked at the same time and had a blast! And then, towards the end of the evening we had our own Nipple Gate with the amazing Tanya Cope baring it all in an accidental, only for Wendy's eyes moment. The problem was that Wendy was recording a video to Instagram (of Tanya) at the time and Tanya was standing right in front of the Facebook Live feed as well, delivering a “Nip Seen Round the World' epic occasion for those watching. We ended the evening heading over to The Eastside Tavern meeting up with Nate, Tanya and Jake, watching musical performers and a little bit of standup. It was a great evening, a perfect way to open our new studio to the public (and our friends) and we are so grateful to everyone that came out. Your support means the world to us and we're grateful to have you all in our lives. Cheers to many more podcasts together! A lot of reasons for that, but probably the biggest is an onslaught of debilitating depression that affected nearly every area of my life. And with depression came doubts. And with doubts came delays. And then dust began to settle. Which depressed the fuck out of me even more. I’ve successfully battled this demon for, God, decades, and it hasn’t been this bad since way back in some very dark times. And I know I’m not alone out there. So many of my friends, especially my creative, artistic friends, fight the same demon, and this pandemic has been emotional quicksand. As the Doomsday Clock ticks and tocks its way toward oblivion, they have chosen to abandon the path of least resistance in favor of authenticity and musical defiance. Calling the broken metropolis of Los Angeles home, Immune has performed at Ozzfest and Mayhem Festival and have had their music featured in numerous films and television shows. Currently hard at work on a new EP, they have recorded with legendary producers and engineers including Sylvia Massy (Tool, System of a Down) and Bryan Carlstrom (Alice in Chains, Social Distortion). Immune; submitted photo. In an odd twist, it turns out that I owe a huge debt of thanks to today’s guest and featured artist, Kendra Black, for helping to pull me out of that quicksand. From the time we first talked, she’s been checking in on me, mainly to find out when the hell her episode was going to drop, but also, I sense, because she suspects some of the roadblocks I’ve been staring at getting the show back on line. Those regular check-ins have been like little bursts of light and warmth through a dingy window. I’m already lining up artists for the next episode, and am very gratified that so many of the bands and artists I love are starting to book dates again, and can’t wait to share with you all the Indie music news that comes my way.

What are some fundamental concepts we should get right before we jump into this 12-part series on coffee science? Join me with scientist Jeremy Nelson of Socratic coffee as we break the ice in this conversation. This episode is sponsored by Crem, a Welbilt brand.Find out more about The Coffee Podcast at thecoffeepodcast.com

As fate would have it, a modern hero stepped out from the fog before we started recording this week. Sure enough, it was none other than "The King of Swing" himself: Jeremy Nelson. To celebrate, The Bruthers Grim buckled down for an absolute riff-fiesta. This week we get down to business on many important topics, including kissing the sexy alien from Splice, taking mushrooms before a 1st date, bringing your Stink Grandma to the beach, and everything in between. Watch & learn & cry.
Christi sits down with Jeremy Nelson of Downtown Grand Junction REgeneration LLC, the developer for the Lowell Village Townhomes. They discuss the exciting project to bring modern townhomes to Grand Junction's vibrant downtown. The homes are being built behind the old R-5 High School, also part of the redevelopment plan, on 7th St and White Ave. When finished, there will be 36 townhomes with detached garages that include an upstairs flex suite. Buyers can choose from multiple floor plans and finishes. All townhomes have front porches to encourage neighborly connection. Couple that with a community garden, great lawn and plaza, and there will be plenty of space for fun! Jeremy Nelson, Rehab Director and Physical Therapist, Carmel Mountain Rehab and Healthcare, San Diego, California
Wright State graduate Jeremy Nelson helps adults with disabilities find community employment. According to Nelson, people with disabilities need a lot of support and resources to have a level playing field when searching for employment. United Rehabilitation Services (URS) of Greater Dayton provides the support and services necessary for participants in the program to achieve their career goals. “Seeing somebody move from being stuck to really being fully themselves in the community in a job and being able to be the best version of themself is really rewarding,” said Nelson who graduated from Wright State in 2013 with a degree in clinical mental health. The Community Employment program at URS ensures that participants are equipped with the job skills, self-confidence and one-on-one support to reach their personal employment goals and achieve financial independence. Nelson has placed participants with a wide range of employers, from fast food restaurants and grocery stores to area hospitals.

Estelle Woodward Arnal (Director of Artist Services, Dance Theater Workshop) and Levi Gonzalez (dancer-choreographer) join me today to talk about DTW's Outer/Space Creative Residency Program. Levi Gonzalez is an independent choreographer living and working in New York City who has created a body of solo and group choreographic projects. He is interested in presenting work in a variety of venues and contexts, from small and intimate spaces to more traditional stages. Often the placement of the work in a certain environment shapes the content. Gonzalez is interested in furthering a dialogue of ideas about the body in society-at-large and about how we experience physical presence. He has gradually distanced himself from dance that concerns itself with the abstract designing of movement as an end in itself and towards work that addresses performance and the power and meaning of embodiment in daily life. His work and his choreographic collaborations with Luciana Achugar have been presented by Movement Research at Judson Church, Dance Theater Workshop, The Kitchen, Danspace Project, PS122, Dixon Place, and PS1 Contemporary Art Center. He has performed extensively with Donna Uchizono Company and John Jasperse Company, as well as ChameckiLerner, Jeremy Nelson and Dennis O’Connor. Additionally, he has worked for Michael Laub’s Remote Control Productions in Europe. Levi teaches technique and composition at Movement Research and with Dean Moss at The Kitchen. He was a Movement Research Artist in Residence from 2003-2004 and a 2006 NYFA Fellow in Choreography. He is an editor of Critical Correspondence, an online publication, and facilitates artist dialogues through Dance Theater Workshop’s Fresh Tracks Residency. My interview with dancer-choreographer Ashleigh Leite, conducted in the fall of 2007, is a reminder of how critically important it is for emerging creative artists here in New York to have the support of organizations like Joyce SoHo. As an artist-in-residence at Joyce SoHo's Mercer Street studios, Ashleigh was provided with ample time, rehearsal space, guidance and helpful feedback as she developed Crawl Space, her evening-length, multi-media ensemble which received its premiere at Danspace Project in November 2007--a major step forward in her career. I hope you'll enjoy my talk with this interesting, thoughtful artist and look for the next opportunity to see her work. GUEST BIO Ashleigh Leite, originally from Scottsdale, Arizona, graduated (cum laude) from SUNY Purchase with a BFA in Dance Performance in 1997. Upon graduation, Ashleigh joined Stephen Petronio Company, where she served as Assistant Director/Rehearsal Director and a dancer for over eight years (1997-2005). While maintaining a full schedule with Stephen Petronio Company, Ashleigh began to pursue her own work as a freelance choreographer. In March 2006, at Joyce SoHo in New York City, she premiered Autopsy for which she received a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Swing Space Award. During the fall of 2006, Ashleigh was an Artist-in-Residence at Dance New Amsterdam and premiered flawed in December; this year, she has been an Artist-in-Residence at Joyce SoHo. She is a current member of Pavel Zustiak's Palissimo and has performed in works by Jamie Bishton, David Allen Harris and Jeremy Nelson. She has taught technique and repertory at conservatories all over the world and guest teaches regularly at Dance New Amsterdam in New York City.
