Serve No Master : Escape the 9-5, Fire Your Boss, Achieve Financial Freedom
Welcome to the Serve No Master Podcast! This podcast is aimed at helping you find ways to create new revenue streams or make money online without dealing with an underpaid or underappreciated job. Our host is best-selling author, Jonathan Green.Today's guest is John Hubbard is a master at overcoming the fear of asking for testimonials. He understands the importance of these endorsements but also recognizes the hesitancy that people have in reaching out for them. John has witnessed firsthand the reasons behind this reluctance, such as the fear of imposing on clients or the belief that they are already paying for the service. However, John firmly believes that businesses that consistently deliver results for their clients often fail to receive testimonials simply because they don't ask. To address this issue, John has developed several techniques to help others overcome this hurdle. By implementing some of these strategies, businesses can see a significant influx of testimonials, thereby transforming their reputation and success. In this episode John Hubbard discusses the art of obtaining powerful testimonials. They delve into the importance of reciprocity, making the testimonial process easy for participants, and the strategy of reaching out multiple times. They also touch on the challenges of conducting video interviews, specifying quantifiable results in testimonials, and the struggles of scheduling and remembering appointments. Additionally, they explore the fear of asking for help, the significance of ideal results and measurements of success, and tips for creating high-quality testimonial videos.Notable Quotes- "The main reason businesses haven't got testimonials coming in the door is because they just don't ask." - [John Hubbard]- "Anytime you can get a quantifiable result in there, is really powerful." - [John Hubbard]- "And one thing that I do right from the start when I'm working with anyone is I set that expectation that if I can get you this result in x amount of, you know, whatever the time frame is, would you be willing to provide a video testimonial?" - [John Hubbard]- "If you want me to do something, ask me to do it right now." - [Jonathan Green]- " The Importance of Testimonies in Growing Your Business: Sometimes we forget those early milestones that we projected, but, actually, people are excited. So I think it can be good to see people's excitement when they have a result." - [Jonathan Green]Connect with John HubbardWebsite:https://www.getbettertestimonials.com/podcast-guestTestimonialScript.comConnect with Jonathan Green The Bestseller: ChatGPT Profits Free Gift: The Master Prompt for ChatGPT Free Book on Amazon: Fire Your Boss Podcast Website: https://artificialintelligencepod.com/ Subscribe, Rate, and Review: https://artificialintelligencepod.com/itunes Video Episodes: https://www.youtube.com/@ArtificialIntelligencePodcast

He is the creator of the online course ‘Get Better Testimonials' and has been producing video marketing for companies including Nike, Ford, Honda, Oakley, BHP and dozens of others around the world for more than 20 years. “So obviously, we're asking for our own selfish needs, you know, for promotional purposes, and our clients aren't silly, they understand that we're using their testimonial for our promotional purposes. But we can also point out the fact that it's suddenly going to help others in the community, and subtly are going to help others that are looking for this solution. So, if, for instance, you've got a community of people, like you know, if you've got a course or your coach or something like that, you'd be saying something along the lines of I'd love to share your story with others, because I think it'll help a lot of other people in the community, that kind of thing. John Hubbard, SOC consultant, SANS Sr. Instructor and host of the Blueprint Podcast, joins the Hacker Valley team this week to discuss SANS, SOCs, and seeking new hobbies. As the curriculum lead for cyber defense, John breaks down what makes a good SANS instructor and how to inspire passion in students when teaching for long hours. Additionally, John gives away his life hacks for pursuing passions outside of the cybersecurity industry, including podcasting, video editing, music creation, and nutrition. Time Coded Guide: [00:00] Instructing for SANS & what it takes to be a good instructor [07:33] Exploring the potential of a SOC-less cyber industry [13:38] Teaching complicated topics with clear visuals & simple comparisons [19:37] Podcasting his way to better SOC consulting skills [26:12] Finding a balance between jack of all trades & single skill master Sponsor Links: Thank you to our sponsor Axonius for bringing this episode to life! The Axonius solution correlates asset data from existing solutions to provide an always up-to-date inventory, uncover gaps, and automate action — giving IT and security teams the confidence to control complexity. Learn more at axonius.com/hackervalley What do you think are the makings of a good instructor, especially for SANS? Transitioning from the world of electrical and computer engineering, John's journey to becoming a SANS instructor took over 3 years of study. Although he jokes that training to be a SANS instructor was the longest job interview ever, John is thankful for the mentorship and inspiration his training gave him. SANS courses require long hours and hard work, but John believes the best instructors bring a real love for what they do to each class. “The technical aspect has to be there in a very strong way. Beyond that, you have to deliver this message not only with razor sharp clarity, but also with passion and energy. People are sitting there watching you talk for hours. If you aren't excited, they're not going to be excited.” Cyber defense is a pretty broad topic. What makes you feel comfortable teaching a course on cyber defense? Cyber defense can be a topic that's both broad and confusing for students, but John has been dedicated to building a curriculum that cuts through the confusion and inspires innovation. Teaching his students to focus on priorities, John wants to bring clarity to complex topics like SOCs, Kerberos, and related security issues. While the topics can be broad and debatable, John wants to equip his students with real world examples and simple comparable concepts. “If there was one word I was going to summarize both of the classes I teach with, it's ‘priorities.' It's getting the right stuff there first, and not getting distracted by all the other details that are potentially trying to pull you in the wrong direction.” Have there been unintended benefits to being a podcast host, that either helps you as an instructor, or even someone that does consulting in the SOC space? Taking the chance to start the Blueprint podcast was inspired partly by John's previous interest in podcasts like Security Now, but also by his pursuit of learning content creation. Starting a podcast, for John, was an exercise in testing his comfort zone. Learning the technical aspects as well as the creative aspects of content creation and podcast hosting continues to build John's confidence in his storytelling and teaching skills. “For me, a lot of things have come out of podcasting. Probably one of the biggest things is just flexing that muscle of doing things that are slightly uncomfortable and scary. Any time you think, ‘I don't know if I can pull this off. Should I do it?' The answer should always be yes.” What is one piece of advice or philosophy that enables you to do more and squeeze as much as you can out of life? In the same way that he teaches his SANS students about priorities, John focuses on his personal priorities often in order to accomplish his well-rounded, jack of all trades lifestyle. Building new skills and cataloging new experiences feels vital for John. Taking full advantage of the time he's been given and getting curious about expanding his comfort zone is an essential philosophy that has taught John not only about cyber defense, but about every hobby he enjoys as well. “I try to get up as early as I can manage to get up every day, well before I start getting emails and meeting requests and all sorts of stuff like that, and try to plan out my day and ask myself, ‘How am I going to actually approach doing the things that matter the most to me?'” --------------- Links: Keep up with our guest John Hubbard on LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube Listen to John's podcast on the Blueprint Blog Learn more about John's work on the SANS Institute website Connect with Ron Eddings on LinkedIn and Twitter Connect with Chris Cochran on LinkedIn and Twitter Purchase a HVS t-shirt at our shop Continue the conversation by joining our Discord Check out Hacker Valley Media and Hacker Valley Studio

Love is in the air this time, and what better way to make your heart beat faster than in the company of threeclassic romantic comedies.First up, Carole Landis and John Hubbard are switching places, literally, in 1940 body-swap comedy Turnabout. James Cagney is romancing Gloria Stuart on the high seas in 1934's Here Comes The Navy. And Charles Boyer and Margaret Sullavan have the most unorthodox marriage you can imagine in 1941's Appointment For Love. We've got music from Cagney himself, as well as dreamy tunes from Doris Day and Jo Stafford. If you listen to this show, I hope you've learned about the options available through Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition. You may think you need to be a Harvard MBA with millions in the bank to make this happen, but today's guest is here to tell you why that is not the case. After a few army buddies told John Hubbard that he should consider business acquisition, he thought he'd look into it. At the time, John was out of the army, working as a cop, and didn't have a fancy MBA. He went onto Searchfunder.com and posted something to the tune of "I'm a veteran and want to buy a business." He then got dozens of emails from investors looking to invest in him and within a few months, he acquired a business. His first meeting with an investor they met at a bar and got wings and beer. They chatted about business for 20 minutes and then the guy said, "You sound cool. I'll give you $200k. Now I'd like to hear about Afghanistan because that's really interesting."This strategy is way more approachable than you think.
John Hubbard came from a military and law enforcement family, and joined the Army straight out of high school. He served on active duty for 13 years, with his first 7 years spent as an Infantryman in the 82nd Airborne and Africa Command, and his final six years in various roles throughout the United States Special Operation Command.Post-military, John spent a year as a city cop, a residential home builder, and an Operations Manager for an exterior remodeling company. While working full-time, John received his MBA from SMU in Dallas, Texas. He launched his search fund, Blue Cord Capital, in October of 2020, and acquired his current company, Express Trailers, in February of 2021. He currently lives in Tampa, Florida with his wife and two sons.

On December 10th, 2016, the life of John Hubbard was taken when a vehicle struck a disabled car John was servicing on I-59/I-20 in Birmingham, Alabama. Having been in the towing business for five years at the time of his death, 25-year-old John Hubbard was described as the type guy who went out of his way to help people. He loved the towing business.” On tomorrow's show, we are going to bring awareness to the “Slow Down, Move Over” effort & Wes Passmore with Classic Towing & Recovery LLC. is going to help me with that as we talk about the 4th Annual Slow Down, Move Over Awareness Rally taking place in Hueytown, Alabama, on Sunday that was inspired by John Hubbard's death. For Halloween this year, we will be releasing our old Haunted Vermont Podcast Episodes right to you. Season One included SIX Episodes as we talked and read about places around Vermont that are considered to be other worldly. Enjoy. ------------------------------------------------------------- A copper statue located at Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier, Vermont is that of a male figure, sitting with closed eyes looking upwards, his head covered with a shawl. Like many similar legends, “Black Agnes” supposedly is cursed with the power to some pretty vile things to those who may be tempted to sit on his lap. The list of not so wonderful circumstances include a certain death within seven days and a range of just plain, bad luck. One thing remains a fact. The statue is bestowed with the title “Thanatos” (Greek for the word “death”). John Erastus Hubbard (1847 – 1899) was a Montpelier businessman with enough wealth to have the statue created and watching over his final resting place. John Hubbard was a business man in the Montpelier area in the 1800’s. It was said that he contested and inherited a sizable amount of money from a wealthy aunt, (who had originally left the city of Montpelier a virtual fortune). He set about the task of building a public library for Montpelier, but at about 1/3 of the cost his deceased aunt had intended. Needless to say people in the area considered him greedy and mean spirited. Some of the reported odd occurrences surrounding “Black Agnes” included glowing red eyes at night, blood curdling screams and other creepy noises. Some people believe that the statue was haunted due to the misdeeds and demeanor of Hubbard, while he was still alive. Stories were told about a number of people who dared to sit in the lap of Black Agnes only to be found dead later. March 21, 2019 at the Boston Athenæum. In the late 1860s, an ambitious New York illustrator – not yet recognized as an artist – made his first picture of the sea. Winslow Homer (1836-1910) was 33 years old, freshly back from France, and finding his way. Over the next 11 years Homer’s journey would take him to a variety of marine destinations, from New Jersey to Maine, but especially – and repeatedly – to Gloucester and other parts of Cape Ann, Massachusetts. It was on Cape Ann that Homer made his first watercolors, and where he learned his great calling: to be a marine artist. And it was there, in Gloucester in 1880, at the end of these 11 years, that he enjoyed the most productive season of his life, composing more than 100 watercolors of astonishing beauty. In August, 40 public and private collections will share some of Homer’s finest marine works at the Cape Ann Museum, in the heart of Gloucester, for the first close examination of the making of this great marine artist. Homer’s journey forever changed his life, and the art of his country. This exhibition – running concurrently with a complementary Homer exhibition at Harvard – will reveal new aspects of Winslow Homer, for the first time placing these paintings, drawings and even ceramic work in their rich geographic, cultural and historical settings. Hear the two curators of Homer at the Beach preview the exhibition on March 21st.

I love hearing about people's morning routines. It's so interesting, because there's no one right way to conduct your morning. Some Day in the Life guests wake up as early as 4am, others don't start until 10am. Some have a strict morning routine of writing in their 5 Minute Journal, others leisurely get up and see where the day takes them. One main takeaway I've had over the past year of recording interviews is morning routines is specific to the individual. What works for one person might not work for another. And isn't that the beauty of life? I compiled a variety of clips from past episodes talking about morning routines and my hope is that you get some inspiration to try something new for your morning routine. Or maybe you'll realize morning routines aren't your thing and that's okay too!
