Who will win Barbenheimer clash at Oscars? Here's what history shows.India's chip ambitions are about to get larger Disney merger in sight, Viacom18 rejigs top rolesSpotify bets on independent music to bolster presence in IndiaNexCAR 19 cancer therapy: Conceived at IIT Bombay, delivered in Tata MemorialWelcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Monday, March 11, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:The big day for cinephiles is finally here. As you are listening to this podcast, The 96th Academy Awards are being announced at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. The apex awards for the global movie industry have for long raised eyebrows with their nomination choices. Often the Academy's picks go against the popular box office trends of the year. Take 2023's highest grossing film Barbie for example: it received 9 nominations, but missed out on some key categories. The Greta Gerwig directorial venture was snubbed in major categories including direction and leading actress. Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, on the other hand, which clashed with Barbie in an epic showdown at the box office, received 13 nominations. Mint's Shuja Asrar breaks down the data on the Academy's past picks and how they performed in the theatres. For the Oscars, popular doesn't always equate to being the best. This year doesn't seem like it'll be any different. It's the era of semiconductors. It is difficult to imagine the world without these tiny silicon chips, and India is bullish on its prospects. In an interview with Mint's senior assistant editor Gulveen Aulakh, union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw spoke about the government's plan to boost chip sector incentives. Currently, these incentives add up to about 76,000 crore rupees. Thanks to a n increase in incentives, we can expect a boom in the number of chip fabs and testing units across the country. This interview comes as just last week the union government approved three chip sector projects with expected investments of 1.26 trillion rupees, with two of them being won by Tata. The minister expects dozens of such units to be up and running in the next five years. As the mega-merger between media giants Reliance and Disney is inching closer, preparations are underway on both sides. In one such move, Reliance-owned Viacom18 is planning to rejig its organisational structure to streamline the business. Senior executives at the company spoke to Mint's senior editor Gaurav Laghate about the upcoming change. As per the planned restructuring Kiran Mani, who was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of JioCinema in November last year, has now been tasked with overseeing both the digital and sports divisions. Meanwhile, the entire content division will be managed by Kevin Vaz, who assumed the role of CEO for Broadcast in July of the last year. Read Gaurav's insightful piece to find out how Reliance is reshuffling its ranks to hit the ground running. There is a good chance that you're listening to this podcast on Spotify, which is also at the centre of this story. Don't worry, this isn't another spotify ad! In a move to bolster its presence in India, the audio streaming platform is ready to bet big on independent artists. The indie music scene in India is growing at a faster pace than film music consumption, which accounts for 70 to 90 per cent of music streaming on the platform in India. In an interview with Mint's entertainment correspondent Lata Jha, Spotify India's managing director Amarjit Singh Batra said that the platform would like to see an equal balance of film and indie music. The Swedish-audio streaming platform has also invested in ‘Spotify for Artists' an initiative which involves working with independent artists by sharing streaming data and consumption habits with them. The significance of this shift in strategy towards independent music is evidenced in the fact that the most streamed song from 2023 was a song by King, who is an independent artist. Batra highlighted that consumption patterns differ significantly among various languages. For instance, in Punjabi music, non-film tracks dominate, making up 90 per cent of the total consumption. In contrast, in languages such as Hindi, Tamil, or Telugu, where film music plays a more prominent role, the share of movie tracks in total music consumption ranges from 70 to 80 per cent. This next story is about a potentially groundbreaking therapy for cancer patients. It starts with a 60-year-old woman named Sheeba. Three years after discovering a growth on her tonsils, Sheeba was diagnosed with lymphoma, a cancer that attacks your lymph nodes. Traditional treatments, including naturopathy and chemotherapy, had failed her. But rather than giving in, Sheeba and her husband sought out CAR T-cell therapy, a cutting-edge procedure that modifies a patient's immune cells to combat cancer. This therapy, developed on a modest budget by a dedicated team at IIT Bombay, represents a beacon of hope, offering significant advancements in cancer treatment in India. Remarkably, Sheeba's cancer was arrested just 28 days following her treatment, showcasing the potential of this innovative approach. Despite the high cost and no insurance coverage, CAR T-cell therapy stands out as a crucial alternative for patients facing a dire prognoses. But it isn't the silver bullet for cancer yet. Mint's Devina Sengupta takes a deep dive into the journey of this emerging weapon against cancer cells. Devina also examines why the new therapy, which can cost the patient up to 50 lakh rupees, still has a long way to go. We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. It's Awards Season yet again. Here on the Holmes Movies Podcast that means, it is time for the Alternative Oscars episodes! AKA the Anders and Adam-emy Awards: Each episode for this series we pick a different year in Oscars history and attempt to correct the record, stripping the undeserving of their garlands while recognizing those who were cruelly overlooked. This time, we will be casting our eye back to… the 83rd Academy Awards, the year that honoured the best films of 2010. It was held February 11th 2011 at the Kodak Theatre. Tom Hooper's The King's Speech was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won 4, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor in a leading role. It was also the second year in a row where the Oscars were being hosted by two hosts. It wasn't Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin who hosted the previous year, but it was Anne Hathaway and James Franco who had the honour to host the event together. This was a way to bring in the young crowd and boost the ratings up. Given the negative responses the ceremony got, they did not do such a good job with Anne Hathaway doing much of the heavy lifting. The night was also memorable for Melissa Leo dropping a surprise F-bomb, a first for an Oscars event.Subscribe/Follow and check out the rest of the podcast!Listen to and check out all the episodes we recommended to each other during the Covid Lockdown here on Letterboxd. The magazine changed the chart's name in its June 17, 1949, issue, having used the term rhythm and blues in news articles for the previous two years. Although the records that appeared on Billboard's rhythm-and-blues chart thereafter were in a variety of different styles, the term was used to encompass a number of contemporary forms that emerged at that time. Perhaps the most commonly understood meaning of the term is as a description of the sophisticated urban music that had been developing since the 1930s, when Louis Jordan's small combo started making blues-based records with humorous lyrics and upbeat rhythms that owed as much to boogie-woogie as to classic blues forms. This music, sometimes called jump blues, set a pattern that became the dominant Black popular music form during and for some time after World War II. Among its leading practitioners were Jordan, Amos Milburn, Roy Milton, Jimmy Liggins, Joe Liggins, Floyd Dixon, Wynonie Harris, Big Joe Turner, and Charles Brown. While many of the numbers in these performers' repertoires were in the classic 12-bar A-A-B blues form, others were straight pop songs, instrumentals that were close to light jazz, or pseudo-Latin compositions. The former was practiced by singers whose main experience was with big bands and who were usually hired employees of bandleaders such as Lucky Millinder (for whose band Harris sang) or Count Basie (whose vocalists included Turner and Jimmy Witherspoon). The small groups usually consisted of five to seven pieces and counted on individual musicians to take turns in the limelight. Thus, for instance, in Milton's group, Milton played drums and sang, Camille Howard played piano and sang, and the alto and tenor saxophonists (Milton went through several of them) each would be featured at least once. Another hallmark of small-group rhythm and blues was the relegation of the guitar, if indeed there was one, to a time-keeping status, because guitar soloing was considered “country” and unsophisticated. The most extreme example of this was Brown, both in his early work with Johnn

After designing several of the most beautiful hotels in Las Vegas if not the world, what does Roger Thomas do for, no pun intended, an encore? Well, for one thing, this weekend the world's most famous movie stars will lounge in a green room of his design before appearing on stage at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood for the 82nd annual Academy Awards show. Does this star turn mean that Steve Wynn's gay alter ego is launching a new phase of his career? Maybe, but he's still got his hands full with projects for Wynn Resorts as varied as an luxury resort in Macau, a new beach club at Encore Las Vegas and a non-hotel casino in Philadelphia. Thomas discusses the Oscars, the Wynns, CityCenter and a whole lot more.Plus, Liberace's home is in foreclosure, Miles recounts his Carson City trek, Steve chats about the Grand Canyon Skywalk, some good and bad news on CityCenter.Email: TheStripPodcast@aol.comVoicemail: 702-997-3300Web: TheStripPodcast.ComBlog: VegasHappensHere.ComTwitter: @TheStripPodcast

The head-scratching and bellyaching began way, way back in 2003 with Zumanity. Then came Ka, Love and Criss Angel Believe. But despite naysayers who think Cirque du Soleil is overextended in Las Vegas, here comes show No. 7, Viva Elvis at Aria, officially opening on Feb. 19. What's the deal? Steve sat down in Montreal last month with Cirque CEO Daniel Lamarre, who says he wouldn't mind having 50 shows on the Strip, if only they had the time and available showrooms. But the company is busy elsewhere these days, planning permanent productions at Radio City Music Hall and the Kodak Theatre, not to mention trying to fix the disastrous Criss Angel show at the Luxor. In Banter: Aria room rates falling some more, Super Bowl weekend is up, Obama steps in Vegas poop again and Bill Clinton is a headliner.Web: TheStripPodcast.ComEmail: TheStripPodcast@aol.comVoicemail": 206-424-4737Blog: VegasHappensHere.ComTwitter: @TheStripPodcast

Vale a pena escutar.
