We’re social creatures, and from the minute that we’re born we come out of the womb really looking to our mothers for cues about what’s important.” - Luke Burgis Mimetic desire -- the act of desiring simply what others desire - imitating what other people want instead of developing our own intentional, conscious wanting - is a powerful force in our development, our world and in our everyday lives. Today’s Finding Brave guest shares his expertise about this concept of desire and why it’s critically important to identify and pursue your own unique and personalized desires with more intention and clarity, and to ground yourself in the values that matter most to you personally -- those “thick desires” and relationships -- that will endure and truly enrich your life. Luke Burgis is the Director of Programs at the Ciocca Center for Principled Entrepreneurship and a professor of business at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. He co-teaches a popular class for all incoming students there called “The Vocation of Business,” an anthropological investigation into the purpose and meaning of business itself. Luke has been the founder and CEO of multiple social impact companies. He was named one of the “Top 25 Entrepreneurs Under 25” by BusinessWeek after the early success of one of his first companies, Healthy Vending, which revolutionized the vending industry in 2005. His other ventures have all tried to contribute to what Luke calls a healthy “human ecology.” He is currently the Founder & Managing Partner of an organization called Fourth Wall Ventures that invests in, incubates, and advises companies that do the same. Luke’s first book, Unrepeatable, explored how people can discover and live out their unique purpose in the world, and help others do the same. His latest book, Wanting, is about human desire itself—why people come to want the things that they want, and how we can build a better future by understanding the process through which desires are generated and shaped. In this episode, Luke reveals why people that have the happiest, most meaningful, fulfilling and productive lives are not the ones that pursue someone else’s idea of what we should be producing. Also, if we can help others flourish for who they really are, it will lead to a much different and better world for everyone. To learn more about today's guest, visit: https://lukeburgis.com/

Rahim is the CEO and Co-Founder of SV Academy, an online, employer-driven school that helps underrepresented jobseekers break into non-coding careers in the tech industry. SV Academy was named the #2 Most Innovative Education Program by Fast Company. Prior to SV Academy, Rahim was the CEO and Co-Founder of Involver, an enterprise social media platform, which was acquired by Oracle and is now part of the Oracle Marketing Cloud. Post sale, he was a key account executive supporting the global field and inside sales organizations. Previously, he founded a web hosting company with his friend Husein while still in high school. Its sale (for $1.5m!) was negotiated while writing his senior year exams. Because of life circumstances, Rahim didn't end up going to a four-year college, or receiving his bachelors. A few years back, Rahim received an Empact 100 Award at the White House from Startup America and The Kauffman Foundation. Rahim was also named one of the Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30 in America by Inc. Magazine, one of the Top 40 Under 40 by the San Francisco Business Times, and one of the Top 25 Digital Thought-Leaders by iMedia. Rahim loves helping and learning from people who are charting their own course. He's an investor or advisor to a number of start-ups, early-stage venture funds, and non-profit organizations. He's also been invited to speak at several cool places around the world like SXSW, President Obama's Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Dubai, MIT's $100K Business Plan Competition, Imperial Bank in Kenya and Startup Weekend in Egypt. I kick off the conversation with Rahim by asking him which city has the best economic opportunity. I was intrigued by his response. We discussed how sales and business have changed in the new remote working environment. Rahim shares his advice for other tech founders embarking on a startup. We talk about his founder's story which began in high school. The mission of his new company SV Academy is to train underrepresented people in remote areas to be able to participate in business. Rahim also shares some of his biggest challenges as a founder.“It could be because they have some disability that might prevent them from being there in person. But they've got the motivation, they've got the skill, they've got the know-how, and they're able to create, like this really compelling experience for their prospect without ever leaving their home. And that is most definitely the direction we're headed. And I think it will become the new norm again, with some selective, selective in person.” - Rahim FazalToday on Startups for Good we cover:-The role family and extended family play for a founder-The changes in jobs as more companies utilize remote workers-Human centered skill sets-Training people in sales and how it has changed-How to deal with imposter syndrome as a founderConnect with Rahim on Twitter https://twitter.com/rahimthedream and find out more about SV Academy on Twitter https://twitter.com/SVAhq and Instagram https://www.instagram.com/svahq/ and their website https://sv.academySubscribe, Rate & Share Your Favorite Episodes! Thanks for tuning into today's episode of Startups For Good with your host, Miles Lasater. This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to solve the demand/supply gap in the accounting industry. My guest is Enrico Palmerino, CEO of Botkeeper.Enrico’s background has been in automation, decision trees, and accounting with a triple major from Babson College in Quantitative Methods, Entrepreneurship, and Strategic Management. While in college he co-founded ThinkLite which automated lighting analysis, design, and manufacturing. ThinkLite grew from dorm room to 46 on Inc's 500 List. A a result of that, Enrico was ranked 2nd among America's Top 25 Entrepreneurs Under 25 by Bloomberg Businessweek. After successfully exiting ThinkLite, he invested in a small accounting firm, joining as the company's Managing Director, and helped grow it from 7 to 40 people in the 3 years. Beyond this he advises, consults and invests in several startups.Botkeeper caught my eye by its claim to create the future of bookkeeping, and this triggered me to invite Enrico to my podcast. We explore what’s inhibiting the accounting industry to transform, and why the combo of blending tech and people in the right way is the secret to a better future. We also discuss Enrico’s vision to what it takes to build a remarkable software business. Here are some of his quotes:There are two big problems that we're trying to solve in the accounting space:The one being, just there's a major shortage of people to do the work. The huge supply demand gap and by the numbers, at least in the US, you got exponentially more businesses forming year over year. And then if that wasn't bad enough, the other challenge you have is in many industries there's been this over amplification of all these little micro niche apps for the accounting sector. All those apps don't talk to each other, which means more siloed data sets that require more manual entry, and an unpleasant experience. So the big problem we're trying to solve is two things. It's, how do we automate as much of the basic pre accounting or compliance accounting and bookkeeping work? And then how do we consolidate the app stack [to] free up the limited supply of accountants that are out there, to do more critical thinking, consulting, advisory, and complex accounting.During this interview, you will learn three things:How, by looking at the big picture “app-stack” of our ideal customers we can find major opportunities for remarkable productivity improvementsThat to solve the shrinking workforce problem we see in many industries we need to approach the problem from a different angle to really solve it.How to orchestrate 3x growth in a market of “Late Adopters” by creating a pull effect. This week’s episode of the Employer Blueprint Podcast we are extremely honored to present Grant Botma. Grant is the founder of Stewardship, and Culture Course. It was through Stewardship, a financial services firm that helps its clients with lending, insurance, and investment advice, that Grant became very successful and learned to build a business by loving people and providing excellent service. Stewardship was already operating with a small team when one of Grant’s key employees wanted to quit and follow his passion for mission work over seas. This is when Grant took a hard look at himself, his leadership style, and his company's culture. Through much research and the success of implementing strategies into his own business, Grant founded an online course called Culture Course, a system created to help business owners build a team of thriving employees. Studies show that 98% of domestic violence victims also experience financial abuse and stay in abusive relationships due to financial insecurity. Today’s guest is Joy McBrien and her ethical jewelry brand Fair Anita creates financial opportunities for women around the world. Their artisans partners carefully design and create every product by hand, and Fair Anita also gives them the resources for economic self-sufficiency. Along with that, Fair Anita also maintains strong ethical standards in the production chain, working conditions, living wages, and full transparency of business practices. Join me as I speak with Joy about the journey of Fair Anita, and the life-changing mission to help women feel safe, valued, and respected, no matter where they live. 3:58 - The Joy 101 Joy started Fair Anita when she was just 24-years-old to help combat the issues with sexual violence that she’d experienced in her own life. After a lot of research, it became clear to her that financial insecurity is the main reason women stay in abusive partnerships. She also knew early on that she wanted her organization to help tackle the problems that can be found in consumerism and the exploitation of women in consumer supply chains. Starting her first jewelry company at age 15 gave Joy a knowledge of jewelry design that helped her connect to artisans and the ways they incorporate their own culture into designs. While living in Peru, Joy witnessed horrible factory conditions and became passionate about knowing where her purchases came from and the working conditions of the people making those products. Joy knew there were already many big names in the fair trade world but realized an opportunity to make fair trade products that were more personalized, accessible, and affordable. 8:55 - Developing Fair Anita As she traveled the world, Joy built a network of women doing incredible work and reached back out to them when she started Fair Anita. They worked together to incorporate artisan’s traditional skills into updated designs for US markets. Joy was very intentional to make sure Fair Anita offered fair trade goods with accessible price points. She believes ethical fashion is only truly ethical if it is affordable and accessible to more than one subset of people. Fair Anita artisans are still paid two to three times the living wage where they’re located. Volume of sales rather than higher-priced items makes this possible. The demand is being driven by Millennials and recent a Forbes article shows that 73% of Millennials are likely to purchase a mission-based product if they’re given a comparable alternative in price and design. Brands will have to adapt to this demand and start focusing more of their supply chains on ethical practices. This helps create a fair trade market that is accessible to average consumers as well. Smaller brands also get a chance to shine and push the market to meet higher fair trade standards. 17:20 - Sustainable Options and Ethical Storytelling Moving forward, Fair Anita wants to continue helping larger organizations improve by creating sustainable options for their customers. Joy will also be turning her focus to international women’s rights and bringing suppliers back into direct conversations about supply chains. One of the biggest parts of Fair Anita’s mission is making sure artisans give consent for their stories to be shared. Artisans should be the ones deciding whether or not to share about their lives, which also means managing consumer’s expectations to hear them. When people do decide to share their story, it’s important to create safe spaces where they can share rather than have other people repeating their stories. 32:37 - Getting To Know Our Guest Find out who Joy would most like to sit next to on a 10-hour flight, her guilty pleasure, what books she’s reading, and of course, what it means to run a business with purpose. ABOUT JOY Joy McBrien is a global learner who is passionate about creating opportunities for women and girls. Calvin Wayman is a professional speaker and social media entrepreneur, and is the best selling author of Fish Out of Water: The Guide To Achieving Breakthrough & Permanently Transforming Into A New You. He’s been featured in Entrepreneur Magazine, The Huffington Post, Social Media Examiner and was named one of the Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under the age of 30 by Influence.com Calvin is also CEO of a very successful social media company – COBBESMEDIA and today he helps explain that there are no secrets in business; the answers are all in front of you, you just need to know where to look. Episode Highlights: When Calvin started his sales career he managed to hold the record for being the worst sales person in the company. Not a record he was proud of, but by studying high-level performers and the successful habits of others, he was able to turn this around and become a top achiever himself. Everything new is uncomfortable: You must accept this feeling as being normal, however many don’t and the tragedy is two-fold; 1) People think there’s something wrong with them and 2) they think there’s a secret they don’t know about yet. This is when people feel like a fish out of water, but eventually you can move from a guppy to a shark if you keep going and never give up. Modeling: You need to model the people who have the results you want, however just modeling won’t fix the problem immediately, there’s a lot of repetition involved once you understand the basic skills. Riding a Bike: All children will learn to ride a bike because their desire to ride is far greater than their fear of failing or falling off…in fact they have no fear of failure because their why is so strong. Why it changes as adults: We worry what other people think and we tend to value others peoples opinion over our own. The School System: Is set up ‘telling us’ that failing is bad…therefore once we leave school and become adults the thought of failure scares us. We can’t fail if we don’t try…but this is not right. Here’s the good news: Once you ‘get it’, you just get it. Success is just like learning to ride the bike; you can’t unlearn it once you know how. Once you become a Shark, you can’t go back and be a Guppy. This is called THE NEW NORMAL CONSISTENT IMPERFECT ACTION - CIA Most people are afraid of messing up so they stay on the sidelines, which is sad. If you wait until you’re ready before you make a move, you’ll never move. If you wait until it’s perfect timing to take action, you’ll never take action. Therefore you’ve got to keep moving forward by doing consistent imperfect action. “Done Is Better Than Perfect”. Check out some of Gary Vaynerchuk’s early videos and you’ll see that he didn’t wait until he was perfect to get started…and look at him today. It may be hard to see yourself being paid $120k for a talk like Gary V gets paid today, but can you see yourself being imperfect on stage? If you can, then that’s where you start today; it’s not about being perfect. My podcast is a perfect example of consistent imperfect action. Too often we see where successful people are now and not where they’ve been or where they started. GET SCHOOLED Most people want to improve their health, finances etc, but we’re often by our selves most of the time, therefore you need to get schooled and be with others with a similar mindset. You need to get around other people that are doing what you want to do. By hanging around people with similar goals and aspirations you can’t help but travel in the same direction…just like a school of fish. Mastermind groups, running groups, etc, they will push you and help you create the new normal. You need to attend 2 and 3-Day events that will attract the type of people you want to associate with. Or join an online business course that has an associated mastermind group on FACEBOOK. SWIM LIKE A SHARK – This is all about Modeling. The sharks are the super-successful people you know (discussed earlier) The advantage of writing a book is it separates you from everyone else in your space. You become an authority and it is a great leverage tool for you personally and for your business. In 2015 Calvin threw in the safety of his job to become an entrepreneur, without any specific plans, which sounds ballsy, but that’s not how Calvin saw it at the time. The fear of not trying was much scarier than throwing in his job and going balls to the wall. He would rather face himself over failure than face himself over regret. What’s the worst possible scenario if you take a chance? Can you live with the consequence? If you can, the risk is worth taking. Calvin Wayman is a best-selling author, keynote speaker, and social media entrepreneur. The most inspiring thing about this man is what he’s accomplished in such a short time. In just Spring 2015, he was still working a 9-to-5 job. He ultimately decided to push himself as a new entrepreneur and he went selling door-to-door for 14 months. He recently published his first book, which debuted on the Amazon top-100 of all books in the Success category. His book is called, “Fish Out of Water: The Guide To Achieving Breakthrough and Permanently Transforming Into the New You.” Also, because of his life transformation, he was just featured on the Dave Ramsey Show--reaching 12 million listeners--sharing his story of becoming debt-free for the first time in his entire adult life. He’s been featured in Entrepreneur Magazine, The Huffington Post, Social Media Examiner, and was even named one of the Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under the Age of 30 (by Influencive.com.) Today, he is the CEO of the successful social media company, CobbesMedia.com - a social media management agency designed to make corporations, small businesses, and personal brands grow and stand out through the power of social media. He’s the one behind the HuffPost original, “The 4 C’s of Social Media Success!” What do you do in the online space? Social media management (for businesses, entrepreneur, network marketing, stand out, get sales, get leads, build connections with your tribe) How did you get into that? Quit my day job 2 years ago (2015). Asked myself: What am I passionate about? What’s my jam? What should I do with my life? I wanna have freedom. But doing what? What I knew: I didn’t wanna be an employee, so I quit. Was there for the first Periscope summit in NYC. Which got me into entrepreneur magazine.Periscope App was my in. Where I became known. Early pioneer. My first email opt in. Made my first dollar. Facebook / Facebook live “replaced” Periscope. Loved that FB was new and that it could make an impact and a regular person could start something. The essence is social media. And that was it! You can build an audience / tribe for the cost of nothing. That’s what got me excited about social media. It’s ok to fail. You learn and grow with everything you do and learn and you will be able to use it in your entrepreneurship. “Trying” is not a curse word. Don’t sit on the sidelines and waste your time. How to move forward? I don’t feel like I’m enough. I wouldn’t know how to share my story. How do you take authority over your story? How do you step into that space of entrepreneurship / speaking? Repetition is huge Practical step: Google search “Toastmasters” to practice speaking (feedback from peers in a safe environment) Your whole life is content. You DO have something to say Do a webinar

Today, he now owns CobbesMedia - a social media management agency designed to help small businesses and entrepreneurs to stand out on social media. He's been featured in Entrepreneur Magazine, Social Media Examiner, The Huffington Post, and was even named one of the Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under the Age of 30 (by Influencive.com.) Being visible is the first step to being seen as an expert, and in this episode Visibility Coach and my very own Publicist Kristi Dosh is going to share with us her exact step by step process to become visible in your industry. Working with Kristi, I was able to secure over 30 podcast interviews in 30 days, become featured in Influencive as one of the Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30, and snag multiple high profile guest blog and feature article opportunities as well. Now it's you're turn to learn from her! Time Stamped Show Notes 2:13 – Introduction. 7:03 – Tip # 1: Develop your niche. Know what it is, live it, breathe it, have an elevator speech for it and commit to it a 100%. 7:21 – Tip # 2: You’ve got to build a visibility strategy. Kristi’s tag line is “It doesn’t matter how good you are at what you do if no one knows you do it.” 7:35 - Tip # 3: You need to implement that strategy and position yourself as an expert by getting in front of the right audiences and being in the right format for what you do. 8:59 – You’ve got to decide what is it that you want to be known for before you start to put stuff out in to the world. It is not sufficient just to be visible but it is good to get started and get over any fear you have. 10:22 – Kristi always starts with asking people their short term and long term goals so that she can develop a strategy and determine visibility techniques to be used. Some people want to reach out to people in just one industry but Kristi works with people from a variety of industries but they all have one factor in common and that is they want to become more visible and establish themselves as experts. 11: 02 – People get worried that they are excluding people by niching down but in reality it is much easier to reach people that way and you can branch out a little down the road and people will automatically come to you if they really want to work with you even if you are outside of a particular niche. 12:25 – You should go where your audience is and you shouldn’t try to drive people somewhere else that will not work 13:01 – Once you have decided what your niche is and who you are trying to reach you have to figure out how to reach them. Some people love to write so they prefer doing guest blogs whereas some people dislike writing or are not confident of their writing skills so guest blogging might not be the right option for them. 14:03 – Sometimes appearing on TV can be helpful because it sometimes elevates you in people’s minds but you should have the right expectations because if you are not in front of the right audience or on the right show you are can’t expect overnight results. 14:26 – You need to develop the right strategy to reach your audience and asking people helps so if you have a Facebook group or a newsletter list you can ask them what kind of blogs do they read instead of trying to drive your audience to some new outlet, find out where they already are and get your stuff into that outlet. 15:58 – Kristi likes to set a schedule, she is an organized methodical type of person and she knows the order she wants to do things in to get her clients to achieve their goals. Some people want to do guest blogging and TV and radio and public speaking so things need to happen in a certain order so it gets easier for her to pitch so that more people can say yes. 16:57 – You need to first decide what your goal is so if someone’s goal is to build a platform to get a book deal from a traditional publisher so you have to do things in a certain order and over a certain timeframe before pitching to the publisher. Some people think that writing on some outlets and going on TV will help but depending on the goals those might not be the right steps to get to their goals so Kristi tells them that that isn’t going to work and she tells them what is going to work. And it is different for everybody some people need more clients and grow their business to a certain revenue level or some people want to sell more products and becoming known as an expert for that particular kind of product. 18:02 – There’s got to be a strategy in place you can’t just gain visibility and expect people to notice and hope that it leads you to your goal. 18:45 – Being visible is the first step in becoming an expert you’ve got to piece some things together and you need some tangible proof to show people that you are an expert. 19:47 – If you are not willing to call yourself an expert nobody else is going to either. Kristi called herself an expert and started saying she was a nationally recognized expert when she was focusing on the business of sports and radio hosts started introducing her as an expert on the business of college sports and she started getting mentions in papers and blogs that called her an expert. 22:00 – People wait far too long before they start calling themselves experts if your business is profitable and you have that well defined niche then you start identifying yourself as an expert. Once you start calling yourself an expert other people will also start calling you one. 22: 46 – We live in an age where there are a lot of different ways to establish yourself like blogging, podcasting, media appearances 23:28 – A professional looking website is the biggest hint that you are an expert. You need to make sure that everything is updated on your website it needs to have photos and details on how to contact you. If you want to write people should see articles on your blog or links to other blogs where you’ve been writing. 24:26 – What talent bookers are looking for is different from what clients might be looking for and so when Kristi starts working with somebody new she gives them suggestions to make small tweaks to their website for things that are important for talent bookers and to make it easy for them to find the things they are looking for. The as seen on banner on your website will ensure that talent bookers know that you’ve already been able to be visible in these big outlets. 27:42 – Ensure that a way to contact you is listed on your website. Some people do not have a way to contact them listed on their website. You need to have your email address or a contact form on your website. 29:42 – Kristi is getting ready to launch a course that is all about how to be your own publicist and one of the modules of that course is on public speaking so Kristi is giving all the listeners of this podcast is her guide on where to find these speaking engagements. It is her brainstorm list of places she has found speaking gigs so that you can get in front of people.
