It was an absolute thrill to talk to today's guest, Michael Benjamin about July 6, 2012 at SPAC. It was a thrill for two main reasons: First, I knew I was talking with a real fan about a genuinely exciting show, because he drove over 6 hours to get to the venue, and crossed the border, since Michael lived in Canada at the time. But also, today's conversation selfishly granted me a wish that I didn't even know I had. Michael comes to us today from Stockholm, Sweden. I've had Canadian guests before, so Michael isn't the first international guest, but I've never had a European guest! Attendance Bias has gone intercontinental! We are everywhere!But a little more close to home: this show was the first night of a 3-night run at the beloved upstate New York venue during a peak year of Phish music. It's a common thread of this podcast to wonder when Phish was actually “back” after they returned in 2009, and 2012 seems to be as good a year to suggest, for a number of reasons that Mike and I discuss in just a few minutes.   So let's join Mike to talk about touring costs, whether or not Ocelot is a bathroom songs, and when the band will return to Toronto as we discuss July 7, 2012 at SPAC.

At the summit, these faith leaders learned about key policy issues, collaborated with fellow pastors and were equipped to take the solutions back to their churches and communities. This week on CURE America with Star Parker, we highlight some wonderful parts of the summit focused on choice in education, getting our children out of government-run, union-controlled schools and to those that reflect the values of their parents. We feature AG Barr's remarks as well as part of our panel discussion on Educational Freedom with Michael Benjamin of American Federation for Children, Francesca Fontenot, and former NFL great and CURE board member Jack Brewer. Some of our pastors also share their experiences at the summit. Educational choice is just one of the many topics we addressed at CURE's National Policy Summit and we will be bringing you more in the following weeks on issues like police reform, homelessness and abortion. Of 2021 Nobel Prize-winning writer Abdulrazak Gurnah's book 'By the Sea', The Times said, “Rarely in a lifetime can you open a book and find that reading it encapsulates the enchanting qualities of a love affair... one scarcely dares breathe while reading it for fear of breaking the enchantment.” It's a sentiment that could be applied across all his fiction and essays, including Booker-shortlisted 'Paradise' and most recent novel 'Afterlives'. A few weeks ago, we brought you the story of Raziel and Jeanne Zisman, a Toronto family who lost their only child, Liam, in January. Before his funeral, the Zismans agreed to use the Benjamin Foundation, a charity arm of the Benjamin Group that collects memorial donations to later disperse among charities selected by the family. The Zismans discovered that the Foundation took 10 per cent of the donations for administrative fees. The family ended up taking the funeral home to provincial court, and they lodged a complaint with the Bereavement Authority of Ontario. Since that episode aired, numerous other Benjamin's clients have come forth with similar stories. The CJN Daily also learned of a months-old case, settled in April 2022, in which Benjamin's was forced to repay 258 clients a total of more than $75,000 for "inappropriate" extra COVID fees and transfer costs during the pandemic. Now, the BAO is giving Benjamin's an ultimatum. The provincial licensing body wants Benjamin's to clean up its act, or risk sanctions—which could include suspension or even revoking the company's license. David Brazeau, the BAO's communications manager, joins to discuss several years' worth of complaints lodged against Benjamin's. Plus, you'll hear from three Toronto families with their own stories—as well as what Michael Benjamin himself has to say. We, of course, sprinkle in some influences throughout. It got a little rushed at the end, which I do regret, but we're both busy guys and sometimes it do be like that. As a result, they are the ones that end up being victimized by the system.--Fortunately there's a growing chorus of parents that are rising up and pushing for the ability to make educational choices that are best for their child.--Appearing with Jim to discuss this issue was Rev. Michael Benjamin. Michael served as the National Director of Grassroots Advocacy and Mobilization for the American Federation for Children and led a team that oversaw the grassroots advocacy and mobilization efforts, which maintained and cultivated an extensive advocacy base on behalf of our nation's children that are in most need of equitable educational opportunity and access. Michael now serves as AFC's Senior Advisor for their faith-based leadership engagement, grassroots advocacy and mobilization efforts.--Michael began by stating the following- -The mandate is to educate the public.
