Quien sabe ?" (WSB "Le temps des assassins")

This programme is a small sample of the great music from North Africa. My selection includes traditional and modern music. The exotic sounds of North African music and its hypnotic rhythms have attracted some famous Western rock musicians. Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones in 1968 found trance music in Morocco with The Master Musicians of Jajouka so powerful that he recorded a live album presented to the world as Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka. In my selection, there is a piece of the Master Musicians of Jajouka. This time was recorded by the British producer Talvin Singh in 2000. Their style of music is of Sufi tradition and it has a trance quality. Same with the Gnawa music from Sahara. Mahmoud Guinia was a celebrated star of this genre. From the desert too is Tinariwen (Algeria/Mali), the Tuareg band with extraordinary links to the blues music. From Argel is the superstar of Rai music Khaled. France is a country that has an important music community of the Algerian diaspora such as Gnawa Diffusion and the recently deceased Rachid Taha. Another extraordinary band from Morocco that you can listen to is Aisha Kandisha's Jarring Effects, one of the most avant-garde North African bands. They used technology and modern Western sounds for the purpose of their indigenous music, not the other way around to adapt to Western music by smothering their productions. Underher is AKA for Khaled Bess, a Tunisian/Canadian successful electronic producer. His productions are very representative of electronic music with melancholic tone. I don't usually repeat music I have played in previous shows or mixes. One of the exceptions is the very catchy and feeling-good song Ayonha by Libyan (and resident in Egypt) songwriter of Arabic Pop Hamid El Shaeri. Natacha Atlas is part of the North African diaspora (British/Egyptian). She is a prominent figure in the British World music scene. Amine Bouhafa is also part of the North African music diaspora. He is Tunisian but residing in France. Bouhafa is one of the most successful young film music composers who won a prestigious international award with the soundtrack of Timbuktu. I hope this selection whets your appetite to learn about this fascinating music. *In a remote village in the Ahl Srif tribal area of Northern Morocco, dwell a collective of Sufi musicians. They play a form of trance music which is used for healing.  Timothy Leary called them The 4,000-year-old Rock'N'Roll band - rather superficial hyperbole perhaps - though it is true that what The Master Musicians of Joujouka play is thousands of years old - and shares something in common with the wildest and most inspired of  rock music.   Record producer, film-maker and Beat historian Frank Rynne, who co-organises their annual festival,  came to the Bureau to tell the strange and wonderful story of the musicians of Joujouka, their culture and their interaction with the counterculture of the 50s and 60s   We hear about Tangier at the time - and the life there of Beat artists Bryon Gysin and William Burroughs with digressions into the dark side of bohemia - along with the story of doomed Rolling Stone Brian Jones who came to record the Master Musicians shortly before his death.   For more on the Master Musicians of Jojouka Get our Counterculture newsletter The Bureau of Lost Culture Home   #joujouka #counterculture #themastermusiciansofjoujouka #sufi #brianjones #psychedelicsound #psychedelicrock #williamburroughs #briongyson #rollingstones  #beatgeneration #thebeats

Twice 5 Miles Radio, hosted by James Navé (www.jamesnave.com) welcomes master musicians Julia Thornton and Don Kirkpatrick (www.yoursacredunion.com) to the microphone. The title of this show is Love In the Time of Play.
A few months ago, Julia and Don crossed my path when we were guest panelists at a (Zoom) storytelling conference. We'd been invited to discuss how the power dynamics between men and women inform the storytelling process. As you might imagine, it was a relatively rich topic that Julia and Don were well-suited to discuss because they used generous love to frame their exploration of the power dynamics between men and women.
After the conference was over, Julia, Don, and I decided to get together for a Zoom visit, just for fun. Our conversation quickly moved to how they coach people around strategies for better relationships. They explained they use much of their professional musical sense of rhythm and harmony in their coaching services for people who come to them. They spoke about their ideas around how playing music and healthy functional relationships have much in common. They pointed out that the spirit play is the essential ingredient for both relationships and music.
In this conversation, they illustrate this relationship between music and play by describing the big arena shows they perform in with Rod Stewart. Julia has played the harp and percussion for Mr. Stewart for ten years, and Don has been playing lead electric guitar for twenty years. They fell in love on one of the long tours that lasted months. They talk about how their love and subsequent marriage brought a playful love vibe on the stage and the road.
Julia and Don are going back out on the road for a spring and summer 2022 tour. If you go to YouTube (https://youtu.be/OOfkDWapW5k), you can watch Julia and Don demonstrate playful love as they play a big show with Rod Stewart - Live at the Fillmore, Miami, February 2022.
If you've had questions about how you can enjoy your relationships more, Julia and Don will answer your questions. Remember, love and being in love can offer you much. Enjoy the show.

An exploration of how magic can be found within all human activities• Offers a “magical-anthropological” tour from ancient Norse shamanism to the modern magick of occultists like Genesis P-Orridge• Looks at how human beings are naturally attracted to magic and how this attraction can be corrupted by both religious organizations and occult societies• Examines magic as it relates to psychedelics, Witchcraft, shamanism, pilgrimage, Jungian individuation, mortality, and the literary works of Beat icons like Burroughs and GysinSince the dawn of time, magic has been the node around which all human activities and culture revolve. As magic entered the development of science, art, philosophy, religion, myth, and psychology, it still retained its essence: that we have a dynamic connection with all other forms of life.Exploring the source magic that flows beneath the surface of culture and occulture throughout the ages, Carl Abrahamsson offers a “magical-anthropological” journey from ancient Norse shamanism to the modern magick of occultists like Genesis P-Orridge. He looks at how human beings relate to and are naturally attracted to magic. He examines in depth the consequences of magical practice and how the attraction to magic can be corrupted by both religious organizations and occult societies. He shows how the positive effects of magic are instinctively grasped by children, who view the world as magical. The author looks at magic and occulture as they relate to psychedelics, Witchcraft, shamanism, Thee Temple of Psychick Youth (TOPY), the panic rituals of the Master Musicians of Joujouka in Morocco, psychological individuation processes, literary “magical realism,” and the cut-up technique of Beat icons like William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin. He explores the similarities in psychology between poet Ezra Pound and magician Austin Osman Spare. He looks at the Scandinavian Fenris Wolf as a mythic force and how personal pilgrimages can greatly enrich our lives. He also examines the philosophy of German author Ernst Jünger, the magical techniques of British filmmaker Derek Jarman, and the quintessential importance of accepting our own mortality.Sharing his more than 30 years of experiences in the fields of occulture and magical anthropology, Carl Abrahamsson explores ancient and modern magical history to reveal the source magic that connects us all, past and present.Carl Abrahamsson is a writer, publisher, magico-anthropologist, and filmmaker. The author of Occulture, Reasonances, and Anton LaVey and the Church of Satan as well as the editor and publisher of the irregular anthology of occulture, The Fenris Wolf, he lives in Småland, Sweden.

Episode 59 is a conversation with my old friend Olympia based musician, artist, world / interdimensional traveller, Arrington de Dionyso. It was so good to sit down with Arrington in person in my painting studio a couple weeks back to record this conversation. I've long admired his singular, steadfast approach to art and music making over the decades we've been friends. His passion and creative fire shines through in everything he does and this light has been a consistent inspiration to me over the years. I'm happy to share this conversation. We cover wide ranging territory starting with his musical roots in the Spokane punk scene of the 80's. He describes the profound impact seeing live touring bands like The Go-Team, Steel Pole Bathtub and NoMeansNo had on him as a teenager. We go on to visit some highlights of his world travels including his time with The Master Musicians of Joujouka and interdimensional explorations with plant medicines. We cover the history of his long running band Old Time Relijun and so much more. Thank you for listening! Rifbjergene i Marokko, 1990erne. My guest this week is Grammy winning producer and engineer, Oz Fritz. Oz is the man behind many amazing sonic masterpieces, including a number that we hold in high esteem on this show. In particular, John Hammond's "Wicked Grin" and Tom Waits' "Mule Variations". But those 2 faves aside, he has collaborated on over 60 projects with John Zorn and Bill Laswell and has worked on albums for Iggy Pop, The Master Musicians of Joujouka and many more. Oh, and I found out he made a rap album for Hulk Hogan in his early days! We got a chance to talk through all that and more. Jarvis Cocker returns to Radio 4 with his nocturnal explorations of the human condition. In tonight's Wireless Night, Jarvis travels to a remote village in the Rif Mountains of Morocco to join the Master Musicians of Joujouka. Their ancient Sufi trance music is said to heal crazy minds. Jarvis wonders if his own troubled mind can find tranquillity there but encounters the wild living embodiment of the God Pan, half man and half goat, who has other ideas. The Master Musicians of Joujouka were first discovered by Western ears in the 1950's when beat writers and artists like Brion Gysin and William Burroughs, living in Tangier, were lured up to the hills and had their minds blown by the healing power of the music. Rolling Stone Brian Jones also made a recording of their music shortly before his death calling it The Rites of Pan in Joujouka. This ritual lives on in the village, where somebody dressed in goatskins takes on the mythical character Bou Jeloud, enters a trance, whirls around with branches of willow and anyone he brushes with is blessed with fertility. For one night only Jarvis joins the musicians and Bou Jeloud under a starlit sky in North Africa where unexpected things happen after dark. This programme was recorded "Binaurally". This is a special, immersive way of recording whereby you'll hear things the way Jarvis was hearing them and can best be appreciated by listening on headphones. Producer Neil McCarthy.

Sep. 11, 2014. The Alliance for California Traditional Arts curates a presentation of some of the key master artists and their apprentices from Northern and Southern California who are deeply integrated into the transnational cultural phenomenon of son Jarocho. During the 1970s this folk musical style from southern Veracruz, Mexico, underwent a revitalization. The central traditional social gathering, the fandango, was reinvigorated, widely popularizing the complex of music, song, dance and poetry that are all part of this tradition. The revitalization ultimately spread beyond the region, becoming a popular manner for Mexican communities to gather. In the early 1990s, fandangos began spreading to Northern California and, by 2000, people throughout California were learning to play instruments, create verses and learn dances in order to participate in the fandango gatherings.
