Tagebücher sind unschätzbar wertvolle Dokumente. Nicht nur in Familien, auch für Historiker. Kriegstagebücher stechen hier noch einmal besonders hervor. Major d.R. Im militärischen Sinne sind sie aber auch offizielle Dokumente, die den Zweck haben, militärische Entscheidungsfindung, chronologische Abläufe und Ereignisse rekonstruierbar zu machen und möglichst objektiv wiederzugeben. Hier ergänzen sich Kriegstagebücher als literarische Werke und Kriegstagebücher als offizielle Dokumente gerade mit Blick auf die historische Bewertung. Von "STAHLGEWITTERN" BIS AN DEN HINDUKUSCHIn einem historischen Abriss werden literarische Werke wie Ernst Jüngers -"In Stahlgewittern"- bis hin zu Markus Götz -"Hier ist Krieg" als Erfahrungsberichte und Editionen den offiziellen Einsatz- und Kriegstagebüchern gegenübergestellt. Dabei wird besonderes Augenmerk auf die Stilistik und auf die nachträgliche Edition gelegt: dem Hauptunterschied zwischen militärisch-offiziellen Kriegstagebüchern und literarischen Tagebüchern. AKTUELLE RELEVANZ IN DER ZEITENWENDEDass die Bundeswehr inzwischen wieder gezielt Einsatz- und Kriegstagebuchführer ausbildet, ist ein Beispiel für die Zeitenwende. Dass zu diesem Zweck eine entsprechende Vorschrift abgefasst wurde, daher auch nur konsequent. In dieser Folge von "Zugehört" wird die Entwicklung der militärischen Kriegstagebücher bis ins 19. Jahrhundert zurückverfolgt. Was blieb im Kern unverändert und wo wurden Anpassungen vorgenommen, die verdeutlichen, dass die Bundeswehr als Parlamentsarmee Kriegstagebücher und Einsatztagebücher unter dem Aspekt einer Rechtfertigung oder Nachvollziehbarkeit militärischen Handelns gegenüber dem Parlament und damit der Öffentlichkeit verfasst?

Subscriber-only episodeThis is my first in a series devoted to the ways in which technology and nihilism have been understood and intertwined in the Western philosophical tradition.  It turns out that what's at issue is something much deeper than simply the historical emergence of these things we call 'technology' and 'nihilism,' taking us to the very core of what is meant by philosophy itself.  Beginning with two of the greatest thinkers on the subject closest to us, we see this from the writings of Martin Heidegger and Ernst Jünger.  In this discussion I give a broad survey of the topic by introducing everything that comes tumbling out when one closely examines the texts that emerged from the correspondence between Heidegger and Ernst Jünge, with particular emphasis upon the all-important image of the forest for both in understanding what is even meant by the words 'technology,' 'nihilism,' and, rather surprisingly, 'history' as philosophical concepts.  That said, I want to emphasize that everything I'm describing here and presenting in the discussion will receive much more clarification in the subsequent discussions of this series which, in many ways, can be understood as the most relevant lens through which one understands the entire tradition of Western Philosophy.

Psykedeliska droger är på uppsving och ses av vissa som rena mirakelmedicinen mot diverse psykiska besvär. Men att beskriva upplevelserna tycks fortfarande utom räckhåll, konstaterar Fredrik Sjöberg. Denna essä sändes första gången i januari 2020. Betänk följande scenario: en grottmänniska från stenåldern förflyttas genom en hypotetisk tidsresa till Centralstationen i Stockholm, säg en fredagseftermiddag. Han står där i vänthallen och förundras. Kanske går han också en sväng på stan i rusningstrafiken, varefter han så teleporteras tillbaka till grottans dunkel, där kamraterna nyfiket inväntar hans reseberättelse. Vad ska han säga? Han saknar ord för nästan allt han upplevt. Rulltrappor, mobiltelefoner, trafikljus, tåg – och flygplan som går in för landning på Bromma. Inget av detta finns varken i berättarens eller åhörarnas föreställningsvärld. Inga ord kan ge rättvisa åt upplevelsen, och att enbart säga något om träden på Klara kyrkogård, som tycktes bekanta, känns lite futtigt. Kanske påstår han sig ha träffat gudar, om så bara i form av barska ordningsvakter i blåa uniformer, men troligare är nog ändå att han ger upp alla försök att berätta och istället hemfaller åt ganska allmänt hållna utrop av typen ”Jävlar, vilken grej!”. Ja, eller motsvarande på stenåldersspråk. Lyssnarna i grottan ser klentroget på varandra medan resenären ler ett inåtvänt leende. Ungefär så kan man gestalta ett återkommande bekymmer för de forskare som studerar effekterna av psykedeliska substanser. LSD och så, ni vet. Försökspersonerna har helt enkelt väldigt svårt att beskriva sina upplevelser. När de väl återvänder från en tripp, ofta i noga kontrollerad laboratoriemiljö, sitter de ändå bara där och flinar och uttalar banaliteter i stil med ”Kärleken är allt!”. Professorerna tar sig för pannan. Lika fullt är denna vetenskap mycket lovande. Under många år låg verksamheten i träda, delvis på goda grunder, men under senare år har denna akademiska öken åter börja blomma. LSD, psilocybin och liknande kemikalier blir allt intressantare för psykologer och medicinare som sysslar med depressioner, tvångssyndrom, ångest och beroendesjukdomar. Nog finns även de gamla flumtomtarna kvar, ofta kännetecknade av större frisyr än förstånd, men på det hela taget är hallucinogenerna på väg tillbaka in i den vetenskapliga värmen. Det var trots allt där alltsammans började. Det var i slutet av 1930-talet; den schweiziske kemisten Albert Hofmann på läkemedelsbolaget Sandoz framställde då ett lysergsyrederivat som gavs beteckningen LSD. Som så ofta hittade man inga praktiska användningsområden, men några år senare blev Hofmann av misstag sin egen försökskanin. Han råkade få i sig en gnutta av ämnet och upplevde historiens första LSD-tripp. Snart producerade Sandoz enorma mängder LSD som, i hopp om kommersiella tillämpningar, distribuerades gratis till universitet över hela världen. Under femtiotalet och in på sextiotalet var forskningen intensiv, och förhoppningen var att de psykedeliska substanserna skulle bli för psykiatrin vad mikroskopet var för biologin och teleskopet för astronomerna. Om drömmarna, som Freud sa, var kungsvägen till det undermedvetna, ansågs behandling med LSD vara något av en motorväg. Vid det laget hade man även återupptäckt psilocybinet, ett svampgift med urgamla anor inom högkulturerna i Mellanamerika. De spanska erövrarna försökte ihärdigt utrota kunskapen om dessa magic mushrooms, antagligen på grund av att giftet från bara några få svampar gav så starka, andliga upplevelser att katolikerna låg i lä, hur mycket rökelse och tingeltangel de än försökte med. Konkurrensen blev kort sagt för hård. Men svamparna dök alltså upp igen och tilldrog sig neurokemisternas intresse. Vetandet om de psykiska sjukdomarnas biokemiska grunder, som senare skulle avkasta moderna antidepressiva läkemedel, utvecklades fort under de här åren, delvis genom dessa experiment. Försökspersonernas erfarenheter var onekligen märkliga; de rapporterade om att jaget liksom löstes upp, om surrealistiska rymdresor och ytterst övertygande känslor av samhörighet. Ofta förekom även synestesi, alltså förmågan att se ljud och höra färger. Konstnärerna var inte sena att haka på, och när sedan psykologiprofessorn vid Harvard, Timothy Leary, introducerade substanserna inom hippiekulturen gick det snabbt utför. John Lennon, Bob Dylan och en hel armé av andra yngre trallgökar gjorde reklam, och när så The Summer of Love randades i San Francisco 1967, hade myndigheterna redan förbjudit all användning. Det får man förstå. För även om varken LSD eller psilocybin var beroendeframkallande så gav de ändå oönskade effekter. Viljan att kriga i Vietnam, till exempel, avtog betänkligt. Den seriösa forskningen pågick ännu en tid, men snart var det stopp även där. Tusentals vetenskapliga rapporter föll i glömska. Först vid millennieskiftet började man gräva upp dem igen, och vad som sedan hände berättas boken Psykedelisk renässans av den amerikanske författaren Michael Pollan. Jämförelsen med Renässansen, då man återupptäckte antikens litterära skatter är välfunnen. Så nu är man på det igen, och eftersom tekniken har gått framåt, liksom forskningen om serotonin och andra signalsubstanser, kan man i dag säga en hel del om vad som faktiskt händer i hjärnan under en psykedelisk tripp, samt även formulera goda hypoteser om hur det kan komma sig att sådana utfärder ibland har gynnsam inverkan på människor som är låsta i ältande och tvångstankar. Till historien hör att Michael Pollan testar själv, och fastän han tar hjälp av erfarna reseledare är sinnesintrycken fortfarande hopplöst svåra att återge, vilket författare som Aldous Huxley och Ernst Jünger insåg redan för längesen. Intressantare är vad vetenskapen har att säga. Vad händer till exempel när man stoppar in en påtänd person i en apparat för magnetröntgen, eller mer korrekt magnetisk resonanstomografi? Hypotesen var att hjärnaktiviteten skulle vara kaotisk och starkt förhöjd, men det visade sig vara tvärtom. Särskilt svag var aktiviteten inom det så kallade standardnätverket, ett för tänkandet centralt nätverk som kan liknas vid en orkesterdirigent, vars uppgift är att hålla samman systemet och dämpa hjärnans mer bångstyriga tendenser. Beskrivningarna av jagupplösning, och känslor av samhörighet med allt och alla, tycks ha att göra med denna inaktivering av standardnätverket. Som om personens ego stängdes av. Denna inre dirigent finns för övrigt inte från början; små barn antas därför befinna sig på en psykedelisk tripp för jämnan, vilket väl ungefär alla föräldrar någon gång har anat. Hjärnan kan jämföras vid en dator; när den hänger sig behövs en omstart. Så förklaras varför LSD och annat i den vägen kan bryta behandlingsresistenta depressioner och tvångsmässiga missbruk samt, fascinerande nog, även döende människors ångest. Entusiasterna påminner visserligen om hälsofanatiker som har sett ljuset i form av LCHF eller vad det nu kan vara, så man bör nog inte helt byta ut kantarellerna mot slätskivlingar i släktet Psilocybe, men ändå; andra illegala droger – opiater, amfetamin och så vidare – förekommer lika ofta som läkemedel. Så varför inte också psykedeliska substanser? Om inte annat kan sådana kemiska äventyr säkerligen ersätta en del av de resor som ändå inte ger mycket mer än flygskam, tarmparasiter och foton av elefanter som ingen vill se. Der Kinofilm „The Zone of Interest“, der dieses Jahr in den deutschen Kinos zu sehen war, erzählt die Geschichte des Holocausts, ohne ihn zu zeigen. Stattdessen porträtiert er jenseits der Lagerzäune das Leben der Familie des Auschwitz-Kommandanten Höß, während das Grauen innerhalb des Lagers nur durch die Geräuschkulisse und den Rauch der Krematorien angedeutet wird. Dieser Rauch dürfte bei entsprechendem Wind auch über das wenige Kilometer östlich gelegene Buna-Werk der I.G. Farben gezogen sein. Dort stand der Schreibtisch eines Mannes mit dem Allerweltsnamen „Helmut Schneider“. Der ausgebildete Jurist war verantwortlich für die Zuweisung ausländischer Zwangsarbeiter auf der von der SS kontrollierten Baustelle. Obwohl Schneider im „System Auschwitz“ integriert war, pflegte er Kontakte zur Résistance und zu deutschen Widerstandskämpfern. Noch vor Kriegsende floh er nach Goslar, wo er in der jungen Bundesrepublik zum Oberstadtdirektor und zum Freund von Ernst Jünger wurde. Der Historiker Prof. Dr. Winfried Schulze hat die wechselhafte Biographie von Helmut Schneider zwischen Auschwitz und Goslar erforscht. „Karriere, so heißt der Weg zum Ziel/Karriere ist ein Gesellschaftsspiel/Karriere, das Wort hat falschen Klang/Karriere heißt manchmal Untergang“, heißt es etwas ungelenk in einem der schwächeren Lieder von Schlagerikone Daliah Lavi. Der Song aus dem Jahr 1971 stammt aus einer Zeit, als im Westen nicht nur die Aufstiegschancen sich deutlich verbesserten und mit den neuen Universitäten auch ein Bildungsversprechen wahr wurde. Generell gab es das, was Ulrich Beck später als „Fahrstuhleffekt“ beschrieben hat: Der Wohlstand wuchs in allen Schichten moderat an. Bis heute ist der Wunsch, Karriere zu machen, fest in der Gesellschaft verankert und immer wieder sprechen sich konservative und auch linke Politiker für mehr Chancengleichheit aus. Blickt man jedoch in die Geschichte, stellt sich schnell heraus, dass das Karrierekonzept ein recht junges ist. In den Jahrhunderten, bevor der Kapitalismus seinen Siegeszug antrat, war diese Form der individuellen Selbstverwirklichung nicht vorgesehen. Der britische Horrorfilm „Hellraiser – Das Tor zur Hölle“ aus dem Jahr 1987 ist ein Klassiker des Genres. Er entsteht zu einer Zeit, als konservative Politiker, etwa Thatcher, Reagan und Kohl, vor der mutterlosen Gesellschaft warnen und eine homophobe Aids-Politik betreiben. Die befreite Lust wird vor allem als Gefahr betrachtet. Mit diesen Ängsten spielt Clive Barkers Film, der in seiner Haltung ambivalent bleibt: So sehr die Bilder für die Transgressionen der Lust werben sollen, mischt sich in die Faszination auch die furchtbare Angst vor dem eigenen Untergang. Die Cenobites warten schon auf jene, die sich aus der bürgerlichen Norm befreien wollen. Der Body-Horror liefert bei allem Trash auch eine Philosophie der Lust und des Fleisches. Deutschland erlebt eine Rezession, aber immer noch tun sehr viele Politiker und Journalisten so, als sei eigentlich alles in Ordnung und schon zeichne sich wieder Licht am Ende des Tunnels ab. Dies trifft leider nicht zu. Die Wirtschaftsindikatoren lassen keinen Grund für Optimismus zu. Es sieht sehr düster aus in Deutschland. Das exportorientierte Wirtschaftsmodell schwächelt, die Arbeitslosigkeit ist hoch, die Nachfrage fehlt, Direktinvestitionen lassen nach und die immer noch hohen Zinsen verstärken die Krise. Außerdem ist die Austeritätspolitik ein derart großes Problem, dass sich selbst die internationale Presse auf den deutschen Sparzwang eingeschossen hat. This is my discussion in its entirety of The Shield of Achilles from the Technology & Nihilism series on my website (AthensCorner.com).  The purpose of this discussion is to reveal the teaching in Homer's Iliad on this thing we call "technology."  This is particularly important for us because of the way in which we tend to mistakenly believe that the most urgent questions concerning our own technology are unique to us today because of Modern science.  This mistaken belief leads us further to mistakenly think that our most urgent questions of technology today are only, or best, approached by way of their different treatments in the various recent postmodern philosophers and sociologists.  In contrast to all that, through a very meticulous reading of key passages throughout the entirety of Homer's Iliad I demonstrate the way in which Homer provides us with a very rich teaching on the very meaning of this thing we call technology in the life of man, along with its possibly great advantages and its possibly great perils, even and especially concerning the proper relationship between man and the divine.  Throughout the discussion I include numerous and in-depth relationships between the themes that Homer has his finger on the pulse of and how those same themes arise in later definitive thinkers of the Western intellectual tradition, such as Plato, Aristotle, John Locke, Nietzsche, Ernst Jünger, and Martin Heidegger.  Among the comparisons and contrasts with these later thinkers, a few of the most important themes I go into great detail about in this discussion are the following:1. The philosophical meaning of natural rights and just how complicated they can become upon careful analysis.2. The similarities and differences between poetry and philosophy, and how they each respectively go about inquiring into the meaning of the good life as well as offering guidance, if not answers, to it.3. The philosophical significance of mathematics as it arises in our ability to make distinctions between the most basic (but definitive!) concepts we all use in the necessary ordering of human life as such and, in particular, any understanding of political community that is to be flourishing.

This is the first half of a discussion in which I broadly but rigorously introduce the most definitive characteristic of Postmodern philosophy and how that characteristic is inherently related to what we refer to as "technology" and PreModern philosophy. Specifically, I discuss the thought of Friedrich Nietzsche, Ernst Jünger, Martin Heidegger, and Leo Strauss, all in relation to: (1) each other, (2) what we refer to as "technology," (3) Premodern philosophy as represented by the Greeks, specifically Homer, Heraclitus, Thucydides, Plato, and Aristotle, (4) so-called "return" movements and, lastly, (5) how and why it is that Thucydides in particular is important in Postmodernity beginning with Nietzsche and continuing up to and especially in the thought of Leo Strauss
