Beyond The Water Cooler
How is Menopause Impacting your Leadership? – Tammy Gee

I love Tammy's phrase about wellbeing running through the veins of an organisation. When you achieve that, you are equipped to deal with any conversation that arises. And all because you start by putting people first. That means being vulnerable and stepping into their space to learn about what someone else is experiencing and what they need.18th October is menopause awareness day. It's a great time to remind you about the impact of menopause on women in leadership positions in your organisation. And it's an even better time to remember the golden rule at work which is simply to demonstrate that you care. Regardless of how people show up, being able to ask 2 questions can be a game changer...1️⃣ What does someone's experience mean for them in terms of how it feels and impacts?2️⃣ What do they need from you/the workplace to help them show up in the best way possible, in their circumstances?Listen to the practical advice in this episode of the podcast to increase your confidence about speaking up and enabling others to have their voice heard.Thank you Tammy Gee

It was amazing to get Dana on the podcast to share her wisdom and expertise with you.  Dana is a leading mental health and wellness expert, specialising in the gut brain axis. Dana believes that normalising poor mental health is not the correct objective because it is not normal! It's the body's way of telling us that something isn't working as it should. She aims to inspire, motivate, and empower people with knowledge on how their bodies work and what we can do to support our bodies to work at their best.  When we understand the role that stress, genetics, poor nutrition and our lifestyles impact our mental health, and how we can make small, effective and achievable changes in each of these areas, then we can start to believe that poor mental health and poor resilience can be overcome. Before embarking on her Nutrition career Dana had a successful corporate career working as a consultant for PwC. During this career she saw the far-reaching impacts of stress and poor food choices on performance and health of those around her. Finally following her passion Dana started studying a BSc in Nutrition Science and completed her dissertation on the link between stress, gut health and mental health.  Today Dana works with individuals and companies throughout the UK running programmes and courses for reactive and preventative responses to stress and the impact on the gut. Join A Cure in Sight as we interview Patricia Daly, an OM survivor and nutritional therapist. She shares her personal journey with ocular melanoma, including a recurrence of her tumor in her eye and local orbital spread, and how she began a journey to healing her body's metabolic system, one small step at a time. “Patricia was diagnosed with a 15.2-mm large choroidal melanoma in 2008. Following plaque radiotherapy under Professor Bertil Damato in Liverpool, she responded well to the treatment but not even two years later suffered a recurrence. The original tumour now measured 18.3mm and there was also local spread with an extraocular tumour of 6.2mm, called "extraocular extension" (stage T4e). Patricia was treated with proton beam therapy in Clatterbridge. Another two years on, in 2012, there was renewed tumour activity and excessive angiogenesis- and this was the moment she opted out of further treatment and embarked on a metabolic health journey, which is an ongoing process for her. Patricia Daly is an experienced and internationally recognized nutritional therapist (MSc, dipNT, mBANT, rCNHC) specializing in the personalized application of ketogenic metabolic therapies for recovery from chronic health challenges. She credits the ketogenic lifestyle for successfully quieting an aggressive eye tumour she was diagnosed with fifteen years ago. In 2021, she completed her MSc degree in "Advanced Nutrition in Research and Practice" at Middlesex University in London. Patricia is co-author of The Ketogenic Kitchen, a best-selling cookbook that includes meal plans for therapeutic carbohydrate restriction. Born in Switzerland and living in Ireland, Patricia is a proud founding and advisory member of the European Keto Live Center based in Switzerland. She regularly speaks at international conferences and has established herself as one of the leading practitioners in the field of metabolic therapies. Nothing makes her prouder than witnessing her clients transform from bystanders to active and empowered participants on their health journey." Lissa Leader is a nutritional therapist, and has her own company – Nutrileader – and also works for Optibac, so is well placed to speak about the microbiome and healthy ageing.  Lissa explains how the gut microbiome keeps changing from birth all the way through childhood and adulthood, and how this can affect a broad range of conditions, including: allergies, digestive health, bone and muscle strength, “inflammaging” and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. We also discuss the very different microbial balance in the urogenital tract, and their potential role in urinary tract infections, thrush and localised tissue health, particularly during menopause.   Lissa then goes on to describe how best to support all of this is a clinical setting, including the pros and cons of a number of dietary factors, and how to choose the right probiotic supplement.  “If we look at, say, the Lactobacillus rhamnosus strains, Lactobacillus rhamnosus have multiple strains, one of which is the GR-1 strain, and the GR-1 strain will adhere to cells in the urogenital tract, whereas the GG strain will actually adhere to cells in the gastrointestinal tract. So we can see that strains can exert completely different effects on the body because that's where they naturally like to gravitate to and and adhere to.”-This podcast is sponsored by OMED Health.OMED Health was established to help the 40% of the population that suffers from gut problems take control through the power of breath analysis. Melanie Martin is a registered Nutritional Therapist, having studied at The Institute for Optimum Nutrition in Richmond London. The principle around which she was trained is that of Functional Medicine. Mel looks for the underlying causes of health issues rather than treating symptoms. Those underlying issues could be lifestyle, genetics, diet, existing drug treatments, or a whole host of things. Since she qualified and started practicing more than 10 years ago, Mel has become increasingly curious about psychology as an underlying cause or co-factor. She studied at the Institute for the Psychology of Eating in Colorado to try to understand more about this area of interest, and why some of us, Mel included, have these lifelong, often secret, and shame-filled, battles with food choices. Mel has also studied metabolic health extensively and has completed the Nutritional Network Low Carb Healthy Fat training for practitioners and many Continuing Professional Development hours. Mel heard Bitten Jonsson speak about food addiction in 2021, something she had intuited and had often heard clients allude to, so this was a real “missing piece” moment for her. She consequently completed Bitten's SUGAR and Holistic Medicine Addiction training. She most recently completed a 15-week introductory course in counseling/psychotherapy and her next learning/development step as a practitioner is to train professionally as a counselor/psychotherapist. Today, Clarissa, Mel, and I talk about the following: Mel's Personal/Professional Journey What are some common hormones such as estrogen & progesterone and why do they fluctuate? Patricia Daly is a nutritional therapist and ketogenic diet expert, specialising in cancer. Most of us have come across at least the basics of the ketogenic diet, but Patricia is able to provide updates and insights that add new layers to its application. Her own experience in both following and supporting people with the ketogenic diet is invaluable, alongside her collaborations with like-minded health professionals.Patricia explains about ketones and metabolic flexibility, the potential benefits of a ketogenic diet, when you would avoid a ketogenic diet and useful tests to help you figure this out, and some practicalities along the way.Patricia first came to the diet when she had cancer herself, and refers to this when describing the “privilege of witnessing the transformation of people who come to me”:“I started my journey in the boot of the car. I didn't even know, I didn't want to know what they were going to do to me. Then I moved to sort of the child seat and then to passenger, until I had enough and started to drive. So that's basically what I love to see in my clients as well, that's people leaving from the boot to the driving seat.”--Join us at the IHCAN Summit 2023 live in London on Saturday 24 June.June's Summit will open eyes to the true power of nutritional medicine. We don't treat cancer, but we can offer the finest personalised nutrition support for people WITH cancer thanks to Mary Beth Gonzalez and Prof Sarper Diler from The Nicholas Gonzalez Foundation. It's infuriating that commercial medicine fails to acknowledge published evidence that integrative health approaches pioneered by Dr Josef Issels, Dr Max Gerson, Dr William Kelley and Dr Nicholas Gonzalez, among others, are effective at curing people with cancer. The late Dr Gonzalez developed a protocol that succeeds, to this day, in bringing cancer patients – even those with pancreatic cancer – into long-term remission, and we're lucky to have two advocates from the sharp end of nutrition-based treatment to inspire us with case histories and protocols showing just how powerful “our” methods can be.Book your ticket at ihcansummit.co.uk.--The IHCAN magazine Podcast is provided for professional education and debate and is not intended to be used by non-medically qualified individuals as a substitute for, or basis of, medical treatment.

Nutrition | Hormone Harmony | Menopause | Peri feat. Christine Kjeldbjerg  We get right into it in this podcast with important discussions around hormones, midlife, the menopause and this huge impactful phase in a woman’s life (and let’s be honest it impacts the whole family actually!) but it needs much more exposure and everyday discussion . WE TALK WITH CHRISTINE KJELDBJERG  When life gives you lemons make lemonade said Elbert Hubbard in 1915, I bet he would be thrilled to hear we are still doing that even in a pandemic! I kind of feel that is one of my mantras, I do try to find the silver linings in life which I know can come across as too positive  but for me I guess it's just my way of trying to rationalise events. I find them easier to deal with if I can find a reason even in the darkest of times.  And boy have we had some dark times in the last 12 months. So at the time of recording this in April 21, President Macron shut down the country again. Now I was supposed to be getting ready for 2 weeks of holiday camps across our 3 centres, the team were all lined up, programmes were in place, places booked and then boom, the news dropped. Of course financially there is a huge impact and we could possibly have gone online but after 12 months of pivoting and responding to ever changing protocols it was time to shut up shop and give the time time to rest and recuperate. And so my silver lining is a gloriously long , even if it's imposed holiday. I have books; fictional reads that have been on my list for a while like American Dirt , dog walks , yoga and pilates, some home projects and just some general check in and catch ups to do.  It was while I was reading a book called Making Work Human I had an idea to have a LoveFest a week of thanks and gratitude and as part of that I asked Christine Kjeldbjerg a previous guest from the Firefly from back in 2017, to come and chat with my team about all things nutrition – as I think we all need a boost after the last 12 months We had a great moment with her over zoom where she gave us some great insight and implementable nuggets on how to tweak our own nutrition. It was a real treat. The timing then seemed right for us check back in here on the firefly and hear what she has been doing since we last spoke. At that point she already held a BSC in nutritional Therapy and was running a busy health and fitness coaching business, instructing  Pilates and Xtend Barre.  She was a busy mum with teens in the same school my son went to. Shortly after that episode she  went on to complete  a BSC in Personalised Nutrition and then like me some of the teens have been flying the nest. For many that would be the moment to down shift but for Christine, who I feel is a lifelong learner and who is so passionate about nutrition, this "spare time" has been used to deep dive further into nutrition and in particular Hormone Harmony which is what we are going to talk about but also she is hugely involved in the community, a big supporter of Mimosa organising many events to raise essential funds for the cancer charities locally and also sharing her wisdom in the Riviera Insider magazine regularly. We get right into it in this podcast with important discussions around hormones, midlife, the menopause and this huge impactful phase in a woman's life (and let's be honest it impacts the whole family actually!) but it needs much more exposure and everyday discussion . Peri and menopause needs to be as easy to talk about as things like football are, which we didn't go into this time but we did last time and you can find out why that is important to Christine on episode 24 all the way back in 2017. Find the episode here: http://www.rivierafirefly.com/24-nutrition-pilates-xtend-barr-cleanse-reboot/ So no off side rule this time, hormone's and harmony, let's get straight into it, let's roll! Welcome to series 1: “Self care” was one of the most searched phrases on Google last year, along with “how to make a face mask” and “when are schools reopening?”I start the series with this fact-packed, myth-busting episode on nutrition, featuring our mysterious, yet vitally important microbiome, our hormones, our vagus nerve and the weird but inspiring science of FMT (Fecal Microbiota Transplantation) Karen Jones (www.karenjonesnutrition.com) and I delve into the links between our gut health and our brains and how our mood can be impacted by the foods we eat. If you meditate to lower stress — or as a respite for illness or as a means to balance your nervous system and improve immunity, consider how improving your nutritional health might compliment that. This is a must-listen for anyone interested in the mind-body connection. It's too easy to compartmentalise ourselves and forget how much the mind and the gut are connected. Diana qualified as a Registered Nutritional Therapist 19 years ago, a career path she took after being a professional cook & caterer, for 22 years, and in that time she set up and ran a cookery school from home, whilst her 3 children were very young. She found it manic and incredibly stressful, trying to juggle a family and working long hours. And just like she sees in so many of my clients nowadays, the chronic stress eventually undermined her own health.   She ate herself back to wellness, following the recommendations of a very forward-thinking doctor and became fascinated by how practicing functional medicine and nutritional rehabilitation was so effective in rebalancing the body's various Systems, to bring about good health and wellbeing.   Diana now runs a private nutritional therapy practice (Diana Hervé Nutrition), addressing various health issues (gut/digestive, weight management, hormone imbalance/autoimmune, cholesterol, Eating Disorders/emotional eating). She holds a Diploma – Practitioner in Eating Disorders from the National Centre for Eating Disorders, (Accr. British Psychological Soc.), and a Diploma in Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). She works with people of all ages to help them overcome their emotional issues with food, body image and weight.   During her career, Diana has been a lecturer in nutrition, health, psychology of health & health research in further education, (qualifying as a teacher in 2008), lecturing at SEEVIC & University of West London, where she is currently an Assessor in Clinical Nutrition. Diana also spent 3 years coaching/mentoring on an NHS programme for obesity and pre-diabetes.   She finds it a privilege to share her knowledge and experience with her clients, whatever their health concerns, to help them to achieve their health goals. She always tries to practice what she preaches. A very brisk walk along the beach every morning sets her up for the day and makes her feel very positive. She loves yoga for relaxation and meditation too. Diana has always swum in the sea and this year has joined lots of other crazy but brilliant people, wild water swimming through the winter! Studies show it boosts the immune system and is great for mental health. As you can imagine, she loves food, cooking and cooking for family and friends, and believes the kindest thing we can do for ourselves, and others, is nourish ourselves well!   Diana Herve www.dianahervenutrition.co.uk T: 01702 472454 T: 07979471779 E: Diana.herve@icloud.com BSc(Hons), DTLLS, Dip.NCFED, Dip.EFTi Professional memberships:  BANT, CNHC, AAMET   ***  From The Heart is a podcast about Yoga, Mindfulness, healing and wellbeing from Dawn Lister and Daniel Groom, founders of Anahata Yoga Centre, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, UK.  Conversations in this light hearted, kind and honest podcast series brings together people who have found ways to practise self-care in their lives, by sharing their knowledge, experiences and insights.  Anahata is a heart centred and nurturing Wellbeing Studio in Leigh on Sea, Essex. “How to improve your health with some great natural top tips which will dramatically increase the quality of your life, health and mindset.” In this episode I had a really informative conversation with Sophie Wedlock-Smith who is a  Nutritional Therapist (BA Hons, DipCNM, mBANT, CNHC.) We are living in a time where we have to start being vigilant with our health and what we put into our bodies. If you have pre-existing health conditions start researching your condition and what type of diet works well with reducing symptoms of your particular condition. From all of the documentaries that I have watched, podcasts that I have listened to, professionals that I have spoken to personally. Most health issues can be fixed or helped with learning about food and eating a diet that is less likely to cause inflamation in the body which is the doorway for disease. Sophie Wedlock-Smith is the owner and founder of SW Nutrition a Nutritional therapist who specializes in natural weight loss, anti-ageing, balancing of hormones, and boosting the immune system while reducing chronic pain. Having personally beat cancer and overcoming a stroke Sophie is passionate and empathetic and truly understands how to empower people to take back ownership of their health so they can feel 100% healthy and feel and look the best possible version of themselves.
