In the last week, we have learned that Any media outlet criticizing Trump is corrupt and should be in jail; Any DOJ lawyer or investigator looking into Trump's many crimes is corrupt and will be fired; Any member of Congress investigating Trump's many crimes should go to prison; Any non-white person whether in the country legally or illegally can be snatched up by Homeland Security and immediately sent to an El Salvador prison; We apparently are at war, much to the surprise of a Congress which has the sole power to declare war; Complying with federal court orders is optional; Any judge ruling against Trump policies should be impeached; and Chief John Roberts may actually have a spine.  In Michigan  Governor Whitmer confirms she's not running for the U.S. Senate; New polling shows that the woman she beat by 10 points in 2022 is a contender to win the GOP's nomination for either Governor or the Senate; State House Speaker Matt Hall believes he, like the Governor, has the right to veto legislation; The battle over fixing the damn roads is escalating;  Republican state Representative Bryan Posthumous, a leader in the GOP's election integrity talk, may be engaged in a little election fraud of his own; and  Michigan Republicans continue to duck face-to-face Town Hall meetings, while Democrats schedule as many as they can. Joining the podcast discussion this week is fellow podcaster and longtime state capitol reporter Rick Pluta. Rick is Senior Capitol Correspondent for the Michigan Public Radio Network. He has been covering Michigan's Capitol, government, and politics since 1987. His journalism background includes stints with UPI, The Elizabeth (NJ) Daily Journal, The Oakland Press, and WJR. He is also a lifelong public radio listener. Rick was one of the first Michigan political reporters to write about “pay-to-play” fundraising, and the controversies surrounding recognition of same-sex relationships. He broke the news that Gov. John Engler was planning a huge juvenile justice overhaul that included adult-time-for-adult-crime sentencing, and has continued to report since then on the effects of that policy decision. He co-hosts the weekly podcast “It's Just Politics” with Zoe Clark. Another crisis averted after the political pros take charge in Washington. Joe Biden quietly cleans up a right-wing created mess, avoiding the shock of a first-ever U.S. credit default with deft negotiating skills and public confidence that he could get it done (and did!). Governor Whitmer takes what could be a major step for Michigan's future, or could end up as just another report getting dusty in the archives. A key Michigan congressional battleground district gets more focus as the list of likely serious Democratic contenders goes down to just 1. And the state's political/business power structure gets together on Mackinac Island to talk policy. We get an insider's look from Michigan Public Radio's award-winning correspondent Rick Pluta. John Engler, enacted a law prohibiting residency requirements for police officers and other municipal employees.McKinnon, 79, also expresses skepticism about a recently announced 12-point safety plan to  address violence downtown, saying "it's not a new plan. They did it before, he said, acknowledging that it was not effective."I don't know how well this is going to work," he added. And he also talks about the need for more parental  responsiblity in the city to help curb crime and the racism he faced inside the department as a young officer. The show also includes some snippets from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's oral history of Allan Lengel's mother, Miriam Lengel, who was a survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II.The group discusses the Holocaust and Black slavery.

Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit Court by President George W. Bush. Judge Saad retired from the appellate court in 2017. The conversation with Judge Saad is focused on concerns raised by America's engaged citizens regarding the deterioration of the rule of law, the actions of the administrative state, and the fate of individual liberty and private property rights. The conversation will also look at how America's rule of law impacts U.S. foreign policy, and specifically the current process put in motion which has allowed Iran — a state sponsor of terrorism to pursue its military goals of developing nuclear arms. While the Biden Administration has failed to hold to account a nuclear-armed Russia for invading a sovereign state on the European continent, the question raised is how will the White House cordon a nuclear-armed Iran from attacking sovereign states in the Middle East including Israel and beyond. The discussion will also highlight the one-year anniversary of the chaotic and disastrous withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan that saw the Taliban take power by force and 13 American service men and women killed in the withdrawal. Join America's Roundtable Radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy in a conversation with Judge Henry W. Saad, former Chief Judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals. Judge Henry W. Saad currently serves as Special Counsel in Plunkett Cooney's Appellate Law Practice Group. Judge Saad was nominated to the federal district court by President George H.W. Bush and to the U. S. Update: The FBI Raid on Former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago Home According to published reports, "A federal magistrate judge has given the Department of Justice one week to provide a redacted copy of the affidavit used to justify the unprecedented FBI search (https://text.npr.org/2022/08/12/1117151056/fbi-collected-multiple-sets-of-classified-documents-from-trumps-mar-a-lago-home) of former President Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence, saying that he believes the affidavit should be partially released. U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart ruled the DOJ must turn over the redacted version by next Thursday at noon." Brief Bio | Judge Henry W. Delta Politics - with Mike Murphy

The Pandemic has either caused a crack-up in our politics or accelerated the crack-up that was well under way. And just when it looked like things were stabilizing, the politics of Covid have evolved along with the Delta variant. Ground zero for how this is playing out right now is California. California is home to approximately 40 million people and the 5th largest economy in the world. It's about to have an election on whether to re-call its incumbent governor, Gavin Newsom. How California voters have experienced government regulations — from lockdowns, mask mandates, school closings, and not to mention double-standards — shapes the political environment there. Is this a harbinger of what's to come to our national politics? To help us understand what's going on in California is the strategist who masterminded the last successful recall election. Mike Murphy was the chief strategist for Arnold Schwarzenegger's election in 2003, which was a re-call of then-Governor Gray Davis. Mike's campaign resumé goes well beyond California. His past clients include the successful gubernatorial campaigns of Mitt Romney in MA, Jeb Bush in FL, John Engler in Michigan and Tommy Thompson in Wisconsin. And that doesn't include all the Senate races he's worked on. Mike has also worked on campaigns in Europe and Canada. And he was the chief strategist on John McCain's maverick presidential primary campaign in 2000 and remained a close advisor to the late-Senator McCain for years. Today, you can catch Mike on the top-rated podcast, “Hacks on Tap” with David Axelrod and Robert Gibbs. He's a political analyst on MSNBC and NBC, and he co-authors a weekly newsletter with his latest political analysis: hacksontap.bulletin.com. At the University of Southern California, he is the Co-Director of the USC Center for the Political Future. This episode covers a lot of pandemic-related political trend analysis. But first, given the tragic news out of Afghanistan this past week, the episode begins with Mike's thoughts on President Biden and this crisis. Regardless of what one thinks of President Biden's policy in Afghanistan, a lot will depend on how our president performs in reassuring the American public and our allies abroad. This episode begins with a discussion on President Biden and Afghanistan and then the second half looks at political trends during the Delta phase of covid.

ELECTORAL COLLEGE MAY ELECT ANOTHER PRESIDENT?

While the nation goes to the polls to elect a president on Nov. 3, the Electoral College determines the country's next leader, said Economics Professor Charles Ballard said in the monthly Institute for Public Policy and Social Research broadcast. September's Podcast covered fresh pandemic observations on the nature of work and guest appearances from Michigan Political Leadership Program Co-Directors Susy Avery and Steve Tobocman. The U.S. Constitution provides for each presidential candidate to be awarded Electoral College votes based upon the popular balloting in each state. Electoral College votes are based on each state's congressional representation. The podcast is a monthly production of MSU Institute for Public Policy, a center for public policy, political leadership and survey research and WKAR Radio. It broadcasts over WKAR this Sunday and popular podcast channels SoundCloud and Apple ITunes.Michigan, for example, has 16 Electoral College votes. Michigan, like most states, requires its Electoral College members to cast votes for the winner of the state's popular vote.  Historically, the popular vote has carried the Electoral College. However, in a few cases, President Donald Trump's election in 2016 included, a candidate has won the Electoral College but not the popular vote  “This is the only election in the world where the person who gets the most votes is not guaranteed to be the winner,” Ballard said.  A small number of key states – Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Arizona -- may determine the nation's next president, Ballard forecast.“Most of the polls show Biden's somewhat ahead. But not necessarily far enough ahead to win the election,” he said.  The presidential campaigns, meanwhile, battle over the pandemic coronavirus and its effects on the economy through the spring and fall, Ballard noted. “The economy has gone from disastrous in April to I would still say quite troubled now.”  August's U.S. unemployment rate was pegged at 8.7 percent. The nation may not return to more normal operation, Ballard said, until next year at least.  “We won't fully get back to normal until enough people have been vaccinated that people feel real, relatively safe about substantial gatherings in person. We can't get all the way back to normal until that happens.”  As for condition “new normal,” the nature of work will likely be disrupted too, Ballard observed, university instruction included. He now records lectures from an office-studio in his basement and offers “open” office hours – via Zoom -- to his students.  That's a drastic change from the introductory microeconomics classes he typically teaches in a Wells Hall auditorium with capacity of some 600 students.  “I was glad yesterday when four students came to my Zoom office hours because I got to see them in person. And that's one thing that I missed this semester is not being able to ‘see' my students.”  Michigan Political Leadership Program (MPLP) Fellows are tackling online networking and remote learning too, said Avery and Tobocman. MPLP is recruiting online as well, actively seeking 24 aspiring leaders ready to take advantage of the certificate program's personal leadership, policy analysis and good government mission.Z  “MPLP is a pipeline for elected officials on both sides of the aisle,” Avery said during the podcast taping.  Avery and Tobocman are political leaders in their own right. Avery is a former Republican Party chair and executive in Gov. John Engler's administration. Tobocman is a former Majority Floor Leader in the state House of Representatives and now leads economic development and immigrant initiatives from southeast Michigan.  The bipartisan program brings together 12 men and 12 women from every region of the state, helping them to build networks that have lasted far longer than MPLP's 10 months of formal training, Tobocman said.  “They really get to know each other, get to know each other's families, know each other's jobs, aspirations, and become lifelong friends, and build friendships that can help them be effective at governing when they get to the Michigan Legislature or in their local community,” he said. Applications are due Friday, Oct. 2. Even this year's annual MPLP fundraising dinner, coming up on Thursday, Oct. 1, has moved online, they noted. Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics, headlines the event with WKAR's “Off the Record” star Tim Skubick. Tickets are available. The award-winning Sabato is a nationally known speaker, political analyst and forecaster, who founded “Sabato's Crystal Ball,” a political newsletter and website. In this special edition of Southpaws, Darren and Jack discuss mental health. A recent study revealed that Grand Rapids, Michigan has the highest depression rate among cities with a population over 1,000,000 in their geographic area. While the study discussed divorce rates, poverty rates, obesity, and other causes of depression, one topic wasn't discussed. Conservatism!Among the top ten depressed cities of all sizes, nine of the ten are known as hotbeds of conservatism and neoliberalism. Could the high rates of depression be caused by conservatism? Also, Darren and Jack examine how Republicans at the federal and state levels have gutted mental health care. Once upon a time, Michigan had 23 state operated mental hospitals. Former governor John Engler and the Republican legislature closed most of the state operated hospitals. Now, Michigan has only five (technically three as one only takes children and another is for the criminally insane).Meanwhile, privately owned mental hospitals are overwhelmed. But one Grand Rapids facility has started an urgent care center specifically for mental health emergencies. Their first six months of operation exceeded all expectations. Finally, Darren has some advice for anyone struggling with mental health issues.

Detroit News Columnist Daniel Howes and Michigan Radio are partners in weekly essays examining what's hot in Michigan business and politics – and what it all means. This week, Howes says that Republican John Engler’s ouster as interim president at Michigan State University shows how partisan politics can course through university board rooms – especially when turbo-charged by the former governor’s own words. Last week, Engler told The Detroit News editorial board that victims of serial sexual abuser Larry Nassar were “enjoying” being in the spotlight, stunning for an ol’ pol exceeding the limits of his acumen.

First, huge news from East Lansing, where former Gov. John Engler is expected to resign as interim president of Michigan State University in the wake of comments he made about victims of the Larry Nassar sexual-assault scandal. Engler, you’ll recall, was brought in to clean up the mess after former President Lou Ann Simon resigned over her handling of the Nassar affair. But Engler last week told The Detroit News that some victims were “enjoying the spotlight.” It was the latest in a long line of controversial moves and comments he made about the scandal, and we talk about why we believe he was the wrong man for the job from the outset. Elsewhere, more than 60 unlicensed medical marijuana dispensaries will be allowed to temporarily reopen amid a marijuana shortage. There’s also big news in Ferndale, where Baker College wants to open a flagship urban campus in 2020, a move that could give the city an economic jolt. Also hoped to deliver an economic jolt is a new partnership between Microsoft and Wayne State University. It targets developing skills for in-demand high-tech jobs. Staying on the jobs theme, Pontiac-based mortgage lender United Shore is looking to hire 800 people this year. And going back to Wayne State, researchers there will study fatbergs after winning an $80,000 grant.  There’s more for your listening pleasure in the episode above. And don’t miss our guide for how to score tickets to see the acclaimed musical “Hamilton” when it comes to the Fisher Theater.
