Oven-Ready HR
Looking after workers mental health should be mandatory

Oven-Ready HR

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 3, 2022 31:56

Workplace wellbeing continues to be a key theme for Oven-Ready.  Increasingly HR practitioners are devoting more of their time tackling a range of complex issues such as mental health provision for employee burnout and additional financial support for workers in financial stress.Recent research findings from financial services giant Legal and General's Group Protection business has revealed some stark results. The majority of UK workers surveyed believe that workplace mental health support should be mandatory, a worrying and distinct disparity between what employers and workers think are the key wellbeing priorities and unsurprisingly perhaps how financial stress is the top issue for workers right now. Joining me to discuss the Wellbeing at Work Barometer research is Jo Elphick the Marketing Director for Legal & General Group Protection and Mike Tyler, the Chairman and co-founder of Fruitful Insights who are experts in helping organisations design, execute and measure wellbeing programmes.Employee benefit programmes are complex and often misunderstood [04:44]Jo agrees and acknowledges that many organisations rate the effectiveness of their benefit and wellbeing provision, and the communication that surrounds it more highly than their workers do.  Jo gives the example around financial wellbeing whereby 86% of employers feel they are doing a good job, whereas only 48% of employees agree.Visibility of mental health programmes are key for younger workers  [06:50]Jo revealed that workers in the 18 - 25 category were far more concerned about visibility of mental health provision than older workers who were much more concerned about their 'relevance' in  an ever changing work landscape. How critical is it that the leadership commit to mental health provision [09:14]Mike argues that it's essential that leadership commit to mental health provision beyond that of just an app. He points to the fact where organisations have a culture of long hours or having a boss who sends emails late in the evening that require a response as situations than an app will not solve. Jo agrees with Mike's analysis and at [10:53] comments on the role of the line manager in overall wellbeing provision. Are Chief Wellness Officers joining the c-suite? [11:51]Mike agrees there is a trend in such a role being created but he says it takes more than a badge or title and references instead the Dame Carol Black report back in 2008 that recommended that organisations report on the health and wellbeing of employers in their annual reports.Wellbeing and hybrid working [17:43]Jo reveals that the research did look at hybrid and remote working and that the majority of workers who are able to have flexibility in their schedule were positive. Jo also reminds us thought that flexible working for most employees is not possible given the type of work they do.How do you measure the success of wellbeing programmes? [23:06]Mike argues that many organisations use the narrow spectrum of reduced absenteeism as a measure of success.  This he argues isn't always a reliable measure as it's difficult to establish absenteeism when many employees are working from home and if you reduce absenteeism you might just be filling up the office with non-productive workers.Resources:https://www.legalandgeneral.com/adviser/workplace-benefits/group-protection/https://www.fruitfulinsights.co.ukhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/joelphick/https://www.linkedin.com/in/lockton/

It's not an uncommon trend, professionals deciding they want to pay it forward and use their knowledge to teach the next generation. However, if you're a professional diving back into the classroom, it may feel overwhelming.  In this episode, we sat down with professional engineer turned educator, Mike Tyler. Mike started his career as an electrical engineer. When his son started school, Mike noticed the lack of STEM resources and teaching available in Chicago. Inspired to make a change, Mike decided to go back to school to study education and use his skills to improve the science and technology teaching in Chicago Public Schools. He's been teaching Robotics, Physics, and Computer Science classes for over six years now.  Mike shared his experience transitioning from an industry professional to professional educator. He talked about the difficulties he came across, and the advice he would give to other teachers just starting in the classroom. Plus, get advice on how to capitalize on industry experience to make your classroom more engaging and, as Mike would say, “edutaining”.  Mike mentions several professional organizations that supported him as he started teaching. You can find several of those here:  National Society for Black Engineers: https://www.nsbe.org/  Computer Science Teachers Association: https://www.csteachers.org/  IEEE: https://www.ieee.org/  Society for Women Engineers: https://swe.org/ You can also find support from fellow Certiport educators in the CERTIFIED Educator Community: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/8958289/.

The guest for this episode is Christopher Wayne, one half of the Australian duo The Naked Magicians. Having toured around the world along with residencies in Las Vegas and London’s West End, Wayne along with his partner Mike Tyler, have created one of the funniest and naughtiest magic shows, that even included an appearance on America’s Got Talent. During our chat, Christopher Wayne shared with us how this show got started and all of its naughty bits, along with his upbringing. Plus, since he’s Australian, we had to talk about their obsession with coffee and how terrible American coffee is. The Naked Magicians hit Detroit for three shows only on Friday March 6th (at 7pm) and Saturday, March 7th (at 7pm and 10pm) at The Music Hall (350 Madison Ave.) in Detroit.

Accept drummer Christopher Williams stops by this week to discuss his lifelong love affair with the Hottest Band in the Land. In this long-form talk, Williams talks about his discovery of KISS via the MTV Unplugged appearance in 1995. He also talks about the MTV Video Music Awards performance that the reunited band gave under the Brooklyn Bridge as the clincher in his fandom. Christopher is no ordinary KISS fan. In this hour-plus discussion he describes the scenario which led him seek and acquire one of Peter Criss' reunion era drum sets. It's a great story that has many twists and turns. He also relives his first KISS concert and how he had interactions with each band member throughout the set. Christopher Williams Aside from playing with metal legends ACCEPT, Christopher works steadily in numerous other musical endeavors including performances with a local group of musicians known as Blonder Than Hell. This group features bassist ET Brown, Williams, and Thee Rock N' Roll Residency founders (and former guests on this show) Jeremy Asbrock and Phillip Shouse. This KISS tribute is absolutely incredible and is not afraid to deliver the rarities that the official product shies away from. This year, they are performing a KISSMAS in July gig in Nashville, TN at Exit/In. This special show will feature the band in full makeup and costume performing, in their entirety, the Hotter Than Hell and Destroyer albums. This is the two-year-iversary month for Succotash! Two whole years. I didn't know it would last this long but then, I didn't know that it wouldn't last this long. If you've been listening the whole time I can't thank you enough. And if you've picked us up somewhere along the way, I thank you as well. Epi55 is not a big clip show - we've only got four snippets from comedy podcasts - but that's because the majority of the show is my interview with the poster boy for alt comedy Andy Kindler. I would have really enjoyed settling in for a quiet, contemplative, in-depth one-on-one with Andy, but podcasters can't be choosers. Instead, I got a rollicking chatfest over a late night meal at D'Angelo's Italian restaurant, the usual hang for comedians following the Mark Pitta & Friends show at the 142 Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley, California. And it wasn't just Andy and me. We were joined by Mark Pitta, Larry "Bubbles" Brown, and Bob Rubin, all of whom would randomly come and go at our table, cracking wise and telling stories as the occasion warranted. In between, Andy answered a few of my questions, none of which really got into his background so if you're unfamiliar with Andy or why he's regarded so highly among comedians, you may not understand why the flock of comics around our table were drawn there like moths to a flame. We do get into some of Andy's thinking about comedy itself and a bit of his history. So it's safe to say there's something for everyone in here. THE SORT-OF-COUNTDOWN Having abandoned my countdown of Stitcher's Top 10 Comedy Podcasts because the top shows rarely change position, here's this week's The 10 Most Active in the Stitcher Top 100 Comedy Podcast List*: 10. By The Way: In Conversation with Jeff Garlin +5429. Sklarbro Country +1748. The Paul F. Tompkast +6353. The Phil Hendrie Podcast +1958. The Tenderloins Podcast +8680. The Ricky Gervais Show +3081. Dennis Has A Podcast -2695. Frangela’s Idiot Of The Week +3996. NewsPop Comedy +32100. Work Sucks +30  *The number on the left is the show's ranking in the Top 100. The number on the right are the number of places, up or down, the show moved this last week in ALL of Stitcher's rankings for comedy podcasts. KICKSTARTING A new campaign over on Kickstarter.com that caught my eye is That's Not Funny, a documentary by filmmaker Mike Celestino. He's talked to some comedians (and wants to talk to a lot more) about subject matter in comedy that rubs some people the wrong way, and why. Succotash kicked him 50 bucks but he's trying to raise $50 THOUSAND to complete the project. (He's already got interviews in the can with funny folks such as Emery Emery, Jackie Kashian, Kyle Kinane, Greg Proops, and Paul Provenza. As of this posting, he's got 30+ days to go but that's going to run out quick. I'll have him on for a quick chat about the film in Epi56 but, in the meantime, click the link or hop over to http://hersh.co/16ntubA and see if you can't help him out. BURST O' DURST Our regular check-in by Will Durst has our favorite raging moderate peering over at the US Supreme Court's reason tussle over the marriage equality issue. CLIPS The Rob & Joe ShowWe've featured snippet from Rob Maher & Joe Robinson's podcast before. This time it's an indelicate peek into Joe's sexual past. It's not exactly tasteful but, if you're looking for that, there's still terrestrial radio out there for you… The Random Variety Show PodcastAnother return visitor this episode is Charley Miller and his Random Variety Show. The chunk Charley sent us is a story he created with the help of sentences sent in by listeners.(BTW, I'm slated to be a guest on the RVS podcast sometime this month - I'll give you a heads up and a link when it happens!) Todd N’ Tyler Radio EmpireThe Todd N’ Tyler Radio Empire has been cranking on air since 1993 out of KEZO in Omaha, Nebraska. They’re syndicated on a number of stations, on the internet and their show has – as so many other radio shows have – become podcastted. Even with all that coverage, I am embarrassed to say I have never heard of Todd Brandt and Mike Tyler until I read last episode’s The 10 Most Active in the Stitcher Top 100 Comedy Podcast List. That’s when T-N-T rocketed into the Top 100, landing at #73 and climbing an incredible 306 places in one week. So I just HAD to clip 'em… The Q ShowMark Bland sent us a sample of The Q Show which originates from St. Louis, Missouri. The description off the homesite tells us that the show is about "everything and is liberal/moderate radio for people with a brain!" Check out our sample tidbit and see if you qualify. That's what we've got for you this time around. I'm off on a road trip this week with Dana Carvey and Larry "Bubbles" Brown, during which time we are going to attempt to record enough material for one and maybe even two upcoming episodes. THAT should make it worth passing the Succotash, right? — Marc Hershon
