Before there were influencers, Donald Byrd was busy influencing art and culture through his countless contributions in Dance. As an established force on both coasts with Seattle now his home, the iconic choreographer shares stories, insights and deep feelings that are the culmination of an artist's life well lived. In this honest conversation with high school senior Gavin M., the legend articulates the significance of an Artist in 2025. He also debunks Drug use and addiction from a years-long struggle that he successfully overcame. He discusses Blackness in America, and how Black people are alchemists that turn pain and oppression into gold. And together they explore the ways that we can achieve more balance, growth and compassion through work on Self. Donald Byrd has been the Artistic Director of Spectrum Dance Theater since December 2002. Formerly, he was Artistic Director of Donald Byrd/The Group, a critically acclaimed contemporary dance company, founded in Los Angeles and later based in New York, that toured both nationally and internationally. His career has been long and complex, and his choreographic and theatrical interests are broad. The New York Times describes him as “a choreographer with multiple personalities ... an unabashed eclectic.” He received a Tony-nomination for his choreography for The Color Purple and a Bessie Award for The Minstrel Show. Co-presented by 4Culture, Coping 101's Artist Mental Health Stories amplify voices from King County's cultural sector to empower individual artists, uplift the creative community and destigmatize mental health from a teen's perspective. No matter our age or background we all face challenges, and there are many healthy ways to find balance. In this episode of the Books on Asia podcast, Amy Chavez talks with Baye McNeil talk about being a black minority in Japan, Japanese views of black people, the "African Samurai," the arrival of Commodore Perry in 1854 (who brought a minstrel show with him who performed "blackface"), and some of the media's portrayals of black people in both the US and Japan. He cites the original Calpis beverage label with a blackface character and mentions tropes in Japanese television. He suggests Japanese change the way they tell stories and use biracial people to represent black people rather than their own representations of black people. He also reflects on teaching English in Japan, the power of propaganda, and the idea of "American exceptionalism."As a writer, columnist, and activist, Baye McNeil writes about diversity and inclusiveness. McNeil is a columnist for The Japan Times (English) where he writes the monthly column called "Black Eye" about the African American experience living in Japan and also writes for Toyokeizai Online (Japanese) where he shares reflections on life and race, as well as profiling people of color who are reshaping Japan's cultural landscape. He is author of two previous books: Hi! My Name is Loco and I am a Racist and Loco in Yokohama, both of which offer accounts of life as a visible minority in Japan. In an exclusive audio excerpt from Chapter 1 of “They Came for the Schools: One Town's Fight Over Race and Identity, and the New War for America's Classrooms,” author Mike Hixenbaugh uncovers Southlake's history, demonstrating how policies meant to protect the town from outside development a half-century ago helped plant the seeds for conflicts over diversity, equity and inclusion—conflicts that are now tearing apart suburbs across the nation. For more details and to purchase the book, on sale May 14, 2024, follow this link: https://www.harpercollins.com/products/they-came-for-the-schools-mike-hixenbaugh?variant=41284682088482
Brittany Davis - "Sepricon" from the 2024 album Image Issues on Loosegroove Records Last we spoke with Seattle artist Brittany Davis, they had released an EP via Loosegroove Records, the label ran by Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard (who is also Davis's bandmate in the side project, Painted Shield). Now, they've returned with their debut full-length album, titled Image Issues, out March 1st on Loosegroove. It's an ambitious 26-track, concept-driven release, interspersed with spoken word pieces by Davis, and with deeply personal lyrics touching on their "discrimination as a Black, non-binary, blind musician, to traumatic family experiences touching on abuse, gun violence, and the prison system." The LP was co-produced by Josh Evans (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Brandi Carlile), with Gossard's full support. (“He is everywhere in spirit and conception and love and vision,” Evans told Spin Magazine.) Davis describes today's Song of the Day as "definitely born to funk...to soul funk! The record is an ode to James Brown and filled with thoughtless greatness...there really is no rhyme or reason to it...all primal instinct." 2024 年第一期节目,我和老林想聊聊 Little Brother. Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition, Murray's Revenge;Little Brother 以及 Justus League 成员在当时都是 Okayplayer 论坛上的活跃用户,这也是后来 Phonte 与荷兰制作人 Nicolay 相识组成 The Foreign Exchange 的契机;Little Brother 的成长环境相比于街头 rapper 更加贴地纯真,所以成员也并不追求“larger than life” 的酷,Native Tongues 和 De La Soul 才让他们有共鸣,他们的音乐是一种面向生活的真情实感和所思所想;首张专辑 The Listening 的制作过于独特,虽然在商业上成绩一般,但 The Source 和乐迷论坛上都获得了高评价,当时涌现出了一批与商业说唱划清界限的嘻哈音乐人,注重个人现实生活和思考的叙述,有了 Backpack Rap 这样的标签;2005 年发布的 The Minstrel Show 是 Little Brother 最精彩的,说唱历史中最被低估的一部作品,概念来自于 Spike Lee 2000 年上映的电影“Bamboozled”,整张专辑以一个电视娱乐节目作为主题线索,将故意的戏仿,讽刺喜剧融入音乐,Phonte 和 Big Pooh 在叙事内容上更加成熟,配合 9th Wonder 标志的制作风格,不仅具有深刻的思考,难得的是 Little Brother 的戏谑幽默,让这部讽刺专辑(satire)达到了奇妙的平衡;Phonte 在纪录片中有表达过整张专辑的一个 statement:In the minstrel shows the late 1800, white and black performers would blacken in their faces with cork and perform stereotypical grossly exaggerated racist caricatures of black culture, fast forward 200 years and black people are still performing in these shows celebrating senseless materialism, excessive violence and blatant misogyny, only today they aren't known as minstrels, they are known as rap stars. Chicken and watermelon have been replaced with rims and jewelry, turning hip hop into one big modern day minstrel show, such is the central idea behind Little Brother highly anticipated and wildly and imaginative sophomore album The Minstrel Show. Playlist:Little Brother - “Beautiful Morning”Murs & 9th Wonder -“Dark Skinned White Girls”Little Brother - “Speed” Little Brother& Consequence& Kanye West - “I See Now” Little Brother feat.

The song and dance kicks into high gear as the whole company arrives in sleepy Pine Tree. This chapter features two of the more theatrical numbers in the whole movie, "Minstrel Show" followed by "Mandy". The second number leads to some more unsubtle flirting between Bob and Betty at the piano. Hosts: Roger Wistar & Marcie Wistar Guest: Emma Wynn
You won't be asked to say the names of the three college students who were shot and killed on the University of Virginia campus. Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler, and D'Sean Perry won't receive the same media attention or treatment as George Floyd received. Their shooter doesn't look like Derek Chauvin; that makes them victims, not martyrs. Black-on-black violence has become such an acceptable part of American society that we no longer debate the causes or the cures. Jason says the destruction of the nuclear family is at the root of the violence in black communities. “A female-led world operates like the southside of Chicago. It manufactures emotional men with little impulse control and emotional women with little sexual discipline. Homicide — by gun or abortion — runs rampant.” "Fearless" contributors T.J. Moe and Delano Squires join the show to discuss how matriarchal culture and fatherlessness are destroying the culture and to expose those who promote it (Hollywood) and those who profit from it (China). Plus, Steve Kim drops in to discuss the U.S. men's soccer team ditching the red, white, and blue and adopting rainbow colors to promote the LGBTQ agenda during the World Cup. And Shannon Sharpe is back on the radar after slyly backtracking his stance on Kyrie Irving and Kanye West, but Jason won't let him off the hook as easily as Skip Bayless did. Tim and Jen welcome back Sean Morris to discuss one of Spike Lee's most fascinating and controversial trainwrecks, Bamboozled.Per Sean's recommendation, check out the official video for “Lovin' It” from Little Brother's “too intelligent” album The Minstrel Show.If you're curious about the camera Spike Lee used to make Bamboozled, you can read a history of the Sony DCR-VX1000 here.In 2005, Dr. David Pilgrim wrote a powerful essay about the collection that became the foundation of the Jim Crow Museum at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. In “The Garbage Man: Why I Collect Racist Objects” he reflects on the emotional toll collecting exacted on him, as well as the anger and sadness the objects still inspire and the lingering stain of anti-black bigotry in the United States.Watch the Levi's 501 button-fly jeans commercial directed by Spike Lee and starring…Rob Liefeld lol Have You Seen This? Travis Scott, astroworld - The most deadly minstrel show on earth The tragedy of rapper Travis Scott is very interesting against the backdrop of over 200 rappers dying this year. Well hip-hop has often been deadly for black people, America has a different reaction when the victims are not black. Travis Scott is also in a world of trouble because of the serious legal implications of having a large, drug infested event that has led to peoples deaths. I thought about the Travis Scott situation for the last couple of days, and I am now ready to make my comments on the issue

Hey there heathens and holy rollers, this week Avery and Juanita begin to discuss what their “Show Up Queen” verse would have centered. The conversation quickly veers into how unhelpful neoliberalism and performative politics are largely unhelpful in any political or liberation movement. They make an example out of DaBaby's recent homophobic and HIV/AIDS-ignorant antics and conclude by drawing the parallels of the multiple ways white supremacist violence is enacted by people of all kinds of identities. Later in the episode, Avery gets personal about his ongoing relationship with desirability, protection, anger, violence, and how that all fits into his abolitionist politics. Accountability is central to this week's episode. #AllStars6 #DragRace #DragFTL Drag from the LEFT is recorded live every Sunday at 6PM EST with your hosts @AveryWare and @JuanitaBindem on Stereo App: https://stereo.com/averyware https://stereo.com/juanitabindem Drag From the LEFT is available everywhere podcasts are streamed: https://anchor.fm/drag-from-the-left Follow us on social media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DragFTL/Twitter: https://mobile.twitter.com/DragFTLInstagram: https://instagram.com/dragftl?igshid=... Kenji Tierney is a wonderfully engaging speaker. Starting with memories of being introduced by his grandmother to sumo by way of watching TV with her he gives a wonderfully learned and fascinating talk on sumo and its development. The story of how the Japanese tried to impress Commodore Perry with a sumo wrestling exhibition and he responded by putting on a minstrel show is just one of many fascinating stories. If sumo has always left you a bit baffled this is a thoroughly entertaining 'deep dive'.
