I tried to use a lot of vocabulary for the title of last week's episode and you all just bounced off that. Or does no one care about EDs? That's a shame. Either I'm supposed to know only two or three words or ending songs from anime are just not beloved. I guess you all just skip EDs and never call your mother. I've seen the abbreviation ED so much lately that I keep thinking about erectile dysfunction. Well, it's time for the (almost) radio hour with a choice selection of Mattie's current favorite OPs that weren't in the last OP episode from a year or two ago. Enjoy! This week we visit a quant show that was enjoyable and easy to watch. The character development was solid and the story was fun. It is a show that anyone can connect with. This is also a show that would be a good introduction to anyone that is looking to get into anime and does not know where to begin when looking for a comedy romance show.Next week's choice is The Saga Of Tanya The Evil. This week's choice was a great one. And it was one that Jack's wife lived as well. The artwork was on point the music was on point and the story flowed effortlessly. You have the great makings of a story and it is delivered with flying colors. That being said, if you are looking for the usually magical and fantasy world that you have come to expect from Ghibli then this will disappoint you this is a movie that is more so grounded in reality so the expectation should be of that and nothing more. This is a story of growth and it does it in a way that is better than you would expect.Next week's choice is Recovery of an MMO Junkie. Have you seen next week's choice or one of the previous ones? Tired of the real world? Total envelopment in ultra-immersive gaming, whether by choice or by force, falls under the "isekai" genre in anime. But why is this theme so prevalent? From the NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) lifestyles portrayed in Himouto! Umaru-Chan and Recovery of an MMO Junkie to the total departure from reality in shows like No Game, No life and Rising of the Shield Hero, we examine how escapist fantasies captivate audiences with every new season. SPOILER ALERT! In this episode, we spoil Recovery of an MMO Junkie, The World God Only Knows, The Rising of the Shield Hero, Btooom!, Accel World, No Game, No Life, and Himouto! On this episode, John talks about Recovery of an MMO Junkie and why the quirky romance story felt satisfying and relatable. The gang also dives into the recent unfortunate buzz generated by the director of that show. Lastly, CC reviews the unconventional hero's journey of Inuyashiki and explains why the show's misguided focus on its all too repulsive villain was ultimately its downfall. We've finally made it to the end of the Fall 2017 season and the end of our first full year of anime podcasts. It's been an incredibly fun year for anime, and this Fall season was no different. I feel like we've learned a lot this year, but also a lot from this last season of anime. From Anime-Gataris, we learned that even when things are looking down, your virtual anime friends will help you fight your battles. From Juuni Taisen we learned that ignorance is bliss. From Inuyashki, we learned that Ichirou actually had a son this whole time...who knew? From Recovery of an MMO Junkie, we learned that pink bikini armor is a weapon of mass destruction, no matter who is wearing it. From Kino's Journey, we learned that THESE...SHEEP ARE ON FIIIIIRRRRE. From Girls' Last Tour, we learned...a lot. From the Ancient Magus' Bride we learned that anime can have Disney-level song sequences, that can actually work. From Blood Blockade Battlefront we learned that Leonardo's sister is a better open-field tackler than anyone on the New York Giants' roster. From Land of the Lustrous, we learned that cutting apart monsters just reveals the cute little puppies inside of them. And finally, we learned that sometimes Leo is right about romance anime, even when he's wrong, like in the tragic case of Just Because.Recorded January 8, 2017.Timestamps:4:55 - Anime-Gataris (Eps. 11-12)21:10 - Juuni Taisen (Eps. 11-12)33:28 - Just Because (Eps. 11-12)55:37 - Inuyashiki (Ep. 11)1:03:14 - Recovery of an MMO Junkie (OVA)1:09:33 - Kino's Journey season 2 (Eps. 11-12)1:27:44 - Girls' Last Tour (Eps. 11-12)1:40:40 - The Ancient Magus' Bride (Eps. 11-12)1:53:26 - Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond (Eps. 11-12)2:04:19 - Land of the Lustrous (Eps. 11-12)2:24:30 - Final Scores
On this episode of Bakacast, we finish out MMO Junkie and Juni Taisen, two shows that had stronger beginnings than they did endings. Also we do our best not to fall asleep while reviewing, as we recorded late on Christmas Eve and we were all a little sleepy.

The year of 2017 has come to an end. After consuming well over 100 new series this year, the hosts of the Otaku Spirit Animecast are here to weigh in on which ones were the best. From action, to drama, to seasonal, and best girl, tune in to hear their picks! Please note: Deliberation episodes are intended to be nearly unfiltered and lightly edited. These were recorded over hours of deliberations and, while a bit of dead air was removed, it may have points of silence. This isn’t a reflection of our typical podcast episodes that are heavily edited for better listening experience. Deliberations covered in this episode: Best of Winter, Best of Spring, Best of Summer, Best of Fall, and Best Anime of 2017! The intro for this episode is the OP for March Comes In Like A Lion 2 called “Flag wo Tatero” by Yuki. The outro for this episode is the ED for Recovery of an MMO Junkie called “Hikari, Hikari” by Yuuka Aisaka.
Playoff football is on and, as of writing this, the Kansas City Chiefs blew a pretty big lead against the Tennessee Titans. Plus there’s seemingly some drama going on in New England that could cause either Belichick or Brady to split off from the team, though I’ll believe that when I see it. But I digress. This time, Chris (@gokuffy) joins me to continue the Kurosawa series with Stray Dog. Then Chris, Camellia (@wildpomme), Helen (@WanderinDreamr), and Ink (@AnimatedInk) join me to talk about Recovery of an MMO Junkie. Finally, Chris, Camellia, and Ink join me to talk about TWOCAR. What a packed show of like three hours of unedited audio. Listen Show notes: 0:30 – Chris and I talk about Stray Dog! 40:19 – Chris, Camellia, Ink, Helen, and I talk about Recovery of an MMO Junkie! 1:27:59 – Chris, Camellia, Ink, and I talk about TWOCAR! Next time is…probably Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Love Live Sunshine? Or maybe the top anime show. Who knows!
We've made it to the penultimate podcast of the Fall 2017 season and we ring in the New Year by talking about weeks 9 and 10. We were having so much fun this podcast that we dropped all pretense of professionalism and just had a Cowboys and Indians fake gunfight in the middle of the Juuni Taisen review. This week, Anime-Gataris showcased the best OP of the season by far in its wacky episode 10. Just Because inched closer to a very disappointing ending, but Bcom still has his fingers crossed. Inuyashiki tried to outdo 9/11 with plane crashes and it was dumb. MMO Junkie is over...kind of? Kino's Journey aired an episode from the original season in the wrong order. Girls Last Dab discovered the meaning of life and it was because of an encounter with robots. This is clearly the most NieR: Automata of shows. Chise got some much needed support and advice from the people around her. Blood Blockade's K.K. proved she is the most badass mom of all time and, finally the Lustrous gems went through some drama as Bort took a shine to Phos and left Dia in the dust.Recorded January 2, 2018.Timestamps:4:15 - Anime-Gataris (Eps. 9 & 10)18:47 - Juuni Taisen (Eps. 9 & 10)29:38 - Just Because (Eps. 9 & 10)47:17 - Inuyashiki (Eps. 9 & 10)1:02:37 - Recovery of an MMO Junkie (Eps. 9 & 10)1:11:35 - Kino's Journey season 2 (Eps. 9 & 10)1:26:22 - Girls' Last Tour (Eps. 9 & 10)1:36:57 - Ancient Magus' Bride (Eps. 9 & 10)1:48:32 - Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond (Eps. 9 & 10)2:01:01 - Land of the Lustrous (Eps. 9 & 10)

It’s coming to the end of the anime season, and I’ve already finished Recovery of an MMO Junkie and Juni Taisen, with more coming in the following weeks. I always like the one week between seasons. Gives me time to procrastinate on watching everything else. This episode, we’re talking about Ai Yazawa’s Paradise Kiss published by Vertical Comics and Akiko Higashimura’s Princess Jellyfish published by Kodansha. That song you heard at the top of the episode was “Koko Dake no Hanashi”by Chatmonchy from the Princess Jellyfish anime. Also included in this episode are “Lonely in Gorgeous” by Tommy february6 from the Paradise Kiss anime and “Kimi no Kirei ni Kizuiteokure” by Sambomaster, the ending from the Princess Jellyfish anime. As always, you can find me on Twitter @ImpassionateK, and my co-hosts Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and Apryll (@manjiorin) on Twitter at those places in the parenthesis. You can find both of their writing at The Organization of Anti-Social Geniuses, more of Helen’s writing at Narrative Investigations, and my writing at the Fandom Post. Listen Show notes: 1:46 – We talk about Paradise Kiss! 19:56 – We talk about Princess Jellyfish! Next time, we’ll be talking about Kitchen Princess and Delicious in Dungeon!
Brent reviews the 2017 anime series Recovery of an MMO Junkie.
Bcom and Leo are on to weeks 7 and 8 of the Fall 2017 anime season. This week Anime-Gataris dropped all pretense as the words Waga na wa Yuirin!!! were yelled by voice actress Rie Takahashi, confirming this show is indeed part of the KonoSubaverse, and is actually the season 3 we've been waiting for. Juuni Taisen spent two episodes on really boring characters that we'd just like to put behind us, and move on from. Just Because finally hooks Leo with some intriguing romantic drama as Ena finally starts to take her selfie more seriously. Inuyashiki "kills" but then doesn't kill two characters in a sequence that confused the shit out of Bcom. Yuuta and Moriko in MMO Junkie have finally received their version 1.0.0 patch and can start really playing the game they're meant to be playing. Kino's Journey continues to raise intriguing questions about humanity, even if it doesn't quite live up to the original in Bcom's opinion. The Girls dab their way through the Windows 3D Pipes screensaver and bake some cookies. The Ancient Magus Bride slowly but surely becomes more confident in her abilities and has gained a sweet doggo sidekick. Blood Blockade continues to be a platform for Bones' animators to unleash their wildest creative urges. And Phos is now so many gems in one that we're surprised she doesn't have multiple personality disorder...though that's probably coming.Recorded December 17, 2017.Timestamps:1:24 - Leo sells rock climbing4:20 - Bcom muses about Star Wars: The Last Jedi (no spoilers)6:27 - Animegataris (Eps. 7-8)19:32 - Juuni Taisen (Eps. 7-8)28:18 - Just Because (Eps. 7-8)44:16 - Inuyashiki: The Last Hero (Eps. 7-8)1:01:36 - Recovery of an MMO Junkie (Eps. 7-8)1:11:21 - Kino's Journey season 2 (Eps. 7-8)1:26:47 - Girls' Last Tour (Eps. 7-8)1:40:27 - The Ancient Magus' Bride (Eps. 7-8)1:53:53 - Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond (Eps. 7-8)2:05:45 - Land of the Lustrous (Eps. 7-8)

On this episode of Bakacast, we make up for the shows we've dropped by adding a couple more to the list. For our first addition, we spend some time talking about both the beauty and existential dread of Land of the Lustrous (arguably the best-looking CG anime so far). And for our second, I gush about Recovery of an MMO Junkie and how it somehow managed to get me to watch a rom-com.
What a week we had for anime! Just Because and MMO Junkie are in the front of Mary and Thomas' minds...with Inuyashiki also rocking it. There's also a lot of exciting(and sad)news in the anime world that has to be mentioned! Also, what's better: watching weekly vs binging? You have to listen to find out!

With (American) Thanksgiving on the early side this year, TV opted to celebrate with viewers instead of taking the week off. First up this episode, Noel and Kate dive in with the comedies, including Thanksgiving-themed episodes of Bob’s Burgers and Brooklyn Nine-Nine and shake-up-filled episodes of Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Then we move on to the drama and genre offerings, including the premieres of She’s Gotta Have It, Godless, The Punisher, and Marvel’s Runaways, a Billy Joel-tastic Arrow, and the long awaited (or dreaded) return of Mon-El to Supergirl. Afterward, it’s time for one more check-in on our 2017 TV resolutions to watch more streaming series (Kate) and anime (Noel). How are our latest explorations of these mediums panning out? Listen in, then reach out with your thoughts on the week’s TV and our latest resolution viewing, Danny the Manny and The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo, and Recovery of an MMO Junkie and TWOCAR!.2017 TV Resolution Check-in #5 (1:13:06) Danny the Manny The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo Recovery of an MMO Junkie TWOCAR!Our Week in Comedy Bob’s Burgers (11:47) Brooklyn Nine-Nine (15:48) Jane the Virgin (18:09) Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (23:15)Our Week in Drama and Genre She’s Gotta Have It Season 1 (35:46) Godless premiere (39:46) The Punisher Season 1 (44:54) Marvel’s Runaways premiere (47:12) Arrow (56:47) Supergirl (1:00:16)Music Featured: “A Diagnosis” from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend; “Priestess” by Pumarosa; Recovery of an MMO Junkie Theme song

Leo and Bcom finish off the remainder of their Fall 2017 first impressions with 15 shows that air on Fridays and Saturdays, alone. But, in the end, they need to narrow the anime season down to the 10 shows they most want to watch, and this season there's actually a large enough variety of shows that we have some disagreements over what we should be watching!I mean, who knew that Dies Irae would be such an articulate and intelligently written parody of the current state of U.S. politics? Or that Love Live! Sunshine!! season 2 would play a hilarious goof on its fanbase by rescreening season 1 over again and pretending that it's actually different. Oh these anime studios and their amazing practical jokes. We can't decide if Kino is a boy or a girl, but what's most important is that Kino is Kino, and that the girls from Land of the Lustrous have nice legs. Ancient Magus' Bride seems to have watched Britney Spears' "I'm a Slave For You" music video a few too many times. They've also gone past March in March Comes in Like a Lion, so I guess March Came Like a...wait...that seems...no, I can see why they stuck with the original title.Anyway, enjoy the podcast, and I'm sorry you had to scroll down so far to get to the timestamps!Recorded November 1, 2017.Timestamps:2:19 - Recovery of an MMO Junkie12:29 - Dies Irae20:51 - Kino's Journey35:17 - Garo: Vanishing Line39:32 - Girls' Last Tour44:09 - Code: Realize - Guardian of Birth45:25 - The iDOLM@STER SideM53:56 - The Ancient Magus' Bride1:04:12 - BLEND-S1:07:21 - Leo explains the origins of the term Yaoi1:07:45 - TWOCAR1:12:24 - Love Live!
**The Censored Brow** We kick things off this week with our featured cartoon and anime (Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls, Netflix’s Bigmouth and Ushio and Tora), and those somehow lead us on to seasonal holidays and mockumentaries. After that little aside we get down to business with our views on the new titles that make up the Autumn season in anime - including The Ancient Magus’ Bride, Love is Like a Cocktail, Kino's Journey: The Beautiful World - The Animated Series, Girls' Last Tour, Rainy Cocoa, My Girlfriend is Shobitch, Infini-T Force, Inuyashiki: Last Hero, Black Clover, Tsukipro The Animation, Juuni Taisen: Zodiac War, Recovery of an MMO Junkie, King’s Game, Garo: Vanishing Line and UQ Holder!. Oh, and we used Autumn because it’s the correct name for the season. So there.
