Monica began to get amazing signs (all dimes) after her father passed. Monica L. Morrissey is author of Dimes From Heaven, More Dimes From Heaven and Once Upon a Dime. She is also owner of Intuitive Wellness, where it is all about "soul-care." She is a professor at Southern New Hampshire University where she teaches teachers who are working on their Master's degree in Curriculum and Assessment. She was an elementary school teacher for 24 years.  She taught middle school math for three years and and then was aCurriculum Director for five years (so she is logical!). Monica has been an educator for over thirty years. Her experience teaching others helped her gain the knowledge she would need for the unexpected career change; becoming an author. At the age of fifty, she published her inspiring Dimes from Heaven, How Coins and Coincidences Helped Me Discover My Life as an Empath book to help others understand our connection to loved ones who are in the spirit world and how our thoughts affect our health. Following her intuition like never before, she began sharing stories about synchronistic events revealing that our souls never die. As an empath and natural-born teacher, her faith is guiding her to help people experience life and death in a whole new way.  Monica was careful to leave spirituality out of the classroom. Since the tragic death of her nephew in 2008, she secretly began reading and studying about mediums, death, grief, and how our body (and life) are affected by our thoughts. She now has a better knowledge about the afterlife to share with others. Her retirement from the public school system allowed her to follow her true passion; helping people who want to learn more about everlasting life and who want to live healthier and happier lives. Monica is a Reiki Master and Instructor, Intuitive Card Reader, Past Life Regression practitioner, and loves to analyze dreams. At her business, Intuitive Wellness, Monica is dedicated to helping clients with soul-care. When she started writing her stories  she knew they were powerful and they would and will continue to help readers experiencing loss. She wants everyone to be able to experience this feeling.Dimes from Heaven  was a finalist for the International Indie Book Awards in the category of death and dying and was an Amazon #1 Top New Release in Supernaturalism.Monica knows how powerful these stories of coincidences are from another dimension. Dimes are her signature sign from heaven and people love listening to her stories. The synchronicities reveal a soul's life is eternal. Each of her books gives us the tools to open the door to heaven so we are able to feel the deep love for those no longer with us. Follow Monica L. This episode features discussions about Christine Toy Johnson and Jason Ma's Broken Ground and Bobby Daye and Monica L. Patton's Love & Southern D!scomfort. BROKEN GROUND (by Christine Toy Johnson & Jason Ma) - Taking place in 1912 on the cusp of a new era for China, Broken Ground tells the story of 18-year old Xuě Lán, as she sets out on the path created for her by tradition and her family to marry a young soldier. Still grieving the recent loss of her mother and twin brother and yearning to make peace with the new life before her, she seeks guidance from both Guān Yīn, the goddess of compassion, and the spirit of her mother. Transported to another space and time of an ancient myth via an embroidered story in NüShū, the centuries-old writing system created by and only for women, Xuě Lán connects to her mother's wishes for her and discovers that she can indeed find happiness by both speaking her truth and honoring her destiny. ***This conversation was recorded in November 2020. LOVE & SOUTHERN D!SCOMFORT (by Bobby Daye & Monica L. Patton) - When dowager Mrs. Catheine Dejoie, of polite Louisiana society, dies, she leaves the entire estate to her estranged granddaughter, Milla, but only if Milla comes home from her self-imposed, decade-long exile to bury Catherine. Milla reluctantly leaves her life in France and returns to her ancestral home, a sprawling postbellum Southern mansion, and to her mother, a faded alcoholic debutante undone by the burden of bearing the family's legacy. With the help of the family's cherished maid, the women begin to repair their relationship until the reconciliation grinds to a sudden halt when a long-held secret is uncovered. Meanwhile, Black and Brown people are concerned that the message being sent is that it is open season on people of color; and that any white person can shoot and kill a person of color and get away with it by claiming they felt they were under threat. Although the Rittenhouse victims were white people, people of color understand quite well the implications of the ruling. Our guests are Rev. Dr. Monica L. Cummings and Barbara Arnwine. Rev. They have established pride in being farmers, with organizational skills that movements around the world can learn from. Women farmers in India were visible in the movement. Relentless Health Value
EP322: Cherry Picking, Lemon Dropping, and Other Learnings for Value-Based Care Models, With Monica Lypson, MD, MHPE

Relentless Health Value

Play Episode Listen Later May 13, 2021 30:30

Imagine if innovators in other businesses operated in the way that some health care status quo doomsayers finger wag. So much for failing fast, iterating, and folding learnings into something that might work better. I don’t like to see screeds that seem to advocate an approach of “try it a few times at a minimum half-heartedly, fail, and then just quit, because obviously anything worth doing should be that easy.” Pieces fell into place with me as I was speaking to Monica Lypson, MD, MHPE. Dr. Lypson is an expert in a bunch of things, but one of them is thinking about next-generation primary care and health equity and what that might look like in value-based care (VBC) metrics. I asked her if because of some of the negative potential perverse incentives to these patient populations whether we should throw out the VBC baby with the bathwater. Her response was succinct and amounted to, “And go back to what? FFS? Because that’s worked out so well?” All this being said, there are big issues with value-based care right now that we really need to take a hard look at and think critically about. But that critical thinking, to be considered innovative and productive, really should inform creative thinking: What do we learn and do better next time? Cherry picking and lemon dropping is a very real potential problem with value-based care. To find out what that means, you’ll have to listen to the interview. Another issue is who gets to decide what the measures and standards are. Who determined what is high-value and low-value care? And is that determination relevant to all communities and all care settings? Then ferreting out from there the potential loopholes for people to game the system because, despite all the virtue signaling that goes on around here, it is amazing sometimes the raw ingenuity exhibited when it comes to gaming the system. Dr. Lypson brought up some points that I have not heard so succinctly before. One of them is that a national framework is pretty necessary here to enable local initiatives. You can’t have a local program, for example, help the homeless get homes when, on a national level, dollars are siloed into firewalled buckets. So, trying to take health care dollars and apply them to housing takes two years and an act of Congress—because it literally takes two years and an act of Congress, or at least someone with more time and authority than a local care team. For more insight into this topic, listen to also the upcoming interview with Mai Pham as well as Nicole Bradberry and Kelly Conroy. Also, the recent interview with Dr. Rich Klasco (EP321), Jeff Hogan (EP309), and Dr. Mark Fendrick (EP308). This is a huge, complicated topic that will take everyone sitting at the table thinking creatively to solve, incrementally, one step forward at a time. Monica Lypson, MD, MHPE, is currently vice dean for education at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. She has practiced in a number of primary care settings, including the Department of Veterans Affairs. MHPE stands for Master of Health Professions Education, by the way. You can connect with Dr. Lypson on LinkedIn.   Monica L. Lypson, MD, MHPE, FACP, serves as a professor, vice-chair of medicine, division director of general internal medicine at The George Washington University School of Medical and Health Sciences. She will join Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons as vice dean for medical education on June 1, 2021. Her work focuses on innovations and improvements in health professions education and assessment, health equity, workforce diversity, faculty development, medical care delivery, and provider communication skills. Dr. Lypson most recently served as director for medical and dental education for the Veterans Health Administration, where she oversaw undergraduate and graduate medical education across the nation within the Department of Veterans Affairs. 04:08 Is value-based care good for underserved communities? 05:09 “If you create perverse incentives, you actually might make known health care disparities worse … to meet the demands’ value.” 06:29 “There actually might be systematic and structural ways that the health care system might say … we’re not interested in taking care of you.” 07:12 “The incentive to have a good outcome is not there; the incentive to have another visit is there.” 08:33 “If you don’t have any connection in that system, even the provider trying to … provide a good outcome might be disconnected because the system is not in place to … connect the dots.” 08:55 “The only indictment I have on the fee-for-service system is that it’s gotten us to where we are right now.” 09:30 What are the must-haves for a value-based system that creates the patient outcomes we need? 09:58 What is a whole health model? 10:43 EP319 with Grace Terrell, MD. 11:08 EP312 with Douglas Eby, MD, MPH, CPE. 16:25 “We want to move money around with the accountability of the patient outcome. First up: Women are being pushed out of the workforce at an alarming rate. We interviewed Vice President Kamala Harris to learn how the next COVID relief bill could provide women with some relief. Then: We’re bringing you three headlines – Trump’s Impeachment trial, the rise in hate acts against Asian Americans, and a microchip shortage – and breaking down the context on why they matter.  Next: More than a year into the pandemic, COVID long-haulers (aka people who’ve shown symptoms for weeks or months after having COVID) are still struggling to receive adequate medical care. We’ll talk to two long-haulers and a doctor about why this group of patients is having a hard time getting the attention they need.  ICYMI: We’ll tell you why a cryptocurrency that started as a joke may have the last laugh...in 60 seconds. Thanks, Elon Musk.  Later: Get ready to mark your calendars, because tax season is here. In all seriousness, you’ve gotta do your taxes at some point. Don’t worry, we’ll break down what you need to know??? Finally: We’ll fact-check some pretty uncool statements from the guy running the Tokyo Olympics. Today on Sojourner Truth: Jacob Blake remains hospitalized after being shot nine times by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Kenosha today, September 1, over objections of the state's governor. Trump said he will not be meeting with the Blake family, but will be meeting with law enforcement. Joe Biden has said he has spoken to the Blake family. In Portland, Oregon, the killing of a far-right supporter on Saturday, August 29, got this response from Donald Trump: "Rest In Peace." Trump tweeted support for the far-right group that organized in Portland a Trump-support caravan, where people fired paint balls and pepper spray at protesters. He said they were "great patriots." Trump has consistently refused to call to account violence by his supporters, but has said that Homeland Security will set up an office to investigate "left-wing violent protesters." Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, sheriffs killed a Black man who was stopped by them while riding his bicycle. Is the nation headed for a race war? Or is the nation already in a race war? Has Donald Trump, while stoking racist sentiments and divisions, managed to shift the focus away from police killings of Black people to law and order? Our guests are Rev. Dr. Monica L. Cummings and Mic Crenshaw. Rev. Dr. Monica L. Cummings is Assistant Minister at Bradford Community Church Unitarian Universalist in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Mic Crenshaw was born and raised in Chicago and Minneapolis and currently resides in Portland, Oregon. Crenshaw is an independent hip hop artist, respected emcee, poet, educator and activist. Also, we remember Chadwick Boseman, the actor whose death at 43 years old from colon cancer shocked his fans and those who worked with him. Best known for his character as King T'challa in the worldwide blockbuster film "Black Panther," Boseman kept his illness from the world while working ill. His other notable roles include playing James Brown in "Get On Up" and Thurgood Marshall in "Marshall." Our guest is Greg Tate is a writer, musician and cultural provocateur who lives on Harlem's Sugar Hill.

ReferenciasBeth Fowkes Tobin, Picturing Imperial Power: Colonial Subjects in Eighteenth-Century British Painting (Durham, N. Today we are going to discuss how the current situation can affect treatment of patients with intravitreal injections and we will refer to a recently published paper in Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology: Guidance for anti-VEGF intravitreal injections during the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper was authored by the network Vision Academy, sponsored by Bayer, which is an international group of retinal experts who collaborate to share existing skills and knowledge in retinal diseases. The recommendations published in the paper were developed during a virtual meeting in March 2020 by the 14-member-Vision Academy Steering Committee. Already available guidance documents for patients receiving intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF agents during the COVID-19 pandemic were reviewed, debated and summarized in the paper. In only 18 days the manuscript was finalized, submitted and accepted for publication, which probably makes it one of the fastest publications in history! In this episode, we are honored to have Monica Lövestam-Adrian, Head of the Medical Retina Department at Lund University Hospital and Associate Professor in Ophthalmology at Lund University in Sweden. Monica is one of the members in the Vision Academy Steering Committee and will share her insights of the guidelines with us today.  For contact:eyepod@bayer.com   MA-EYL-DK-0127-1

On Wednesday, October 30, 2019, NACDL hosted an advocacy call on drug-induced homicide laws. Speakers included Valena Elizabeth Beety, Professor of Law at Arizona State University Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, and Deputy Director of the Academy for Justice, a new criminal justice center connecting research with policy reform; Leo Beletsky, Associate Professor of Law and Health Sciences at Northeastern University, where he is the faculty director of the Health in Justice Action Lab; and Lindsey LaSalle, Managing Director, Public Health, Law and Policy at the Drug Policy Alliance. Background: On the books in many states and federally, drug-induced homicide laws have gained in popularity as the country deals with an increase in drug overdose deaths. Drug-induced homicide laws seek to hold drug distributors criminally responsible for overdose deaths. Believed to target major drug traffickers, these laws are actually resulting in friends, family members and romantic partners of overdose victims being charged for their death. According to a 2017 report by the Drug Policy Alliance, individuals charged with or prosecuted for drug-induced homicide increased by over 300 percent in six years, to 1,178 in 2016 from 363 in 2011. Racial disparities are present with a disproportionate number of charges being brought in cases where the victim is white and the dealer is a person of color. Racial bias is also evident in the gaping disparity of the sentences being handed down to drug-induced homicide defendants of color – a median of nearly nine years, compared to five years for white defendants.

Today's EXTREMELY HIGH ENERGY Who's There will hopefully make up for Tuesday's EXTREMELY SUBPAR ENERGY episode (blame getting up early on Labor Day weekend) and we have you to thank for it. It's a wonderfully wild collection of calls, from warnings about the dangers of champagne corks to desperate pleas from Pittsburgh residents to respect Rooney Mara's family. There's a call about how Eva Longoria's obsession with hyaluronic spans language barriers, a call about how Real Housewives of Beverly Hills finally hired its first black cast member, and -- perhaps most importantly -- a call about Maura Tierney that really takes us on a journey through iconic actresses with extreme needs a cigarette energy. As always, call 619.WHO.THEM to leave a message for us and we might play it on a future episode! You're all the best. We mean it.
