Kathryn Brillhart has always been ahead of her time. As a teen, she assisted her father in shooting documentaries; then she combined her sharp eye as a cinematographer with her passion for VFX to become a virtual production and volume capture expert. Projects she's worked on include Las Vegas' ginormous MSG Sphere, pioneering virtual production short “Ripple Effect,” and the movie Black Adam. Most recently, Kathryn has helped create the stunning, desolate world of the Fallout TV series. Kathryn shares her unique perspective on the way digital technology has transformed the industry, from her early days shooting on celluloid to DV tapes, as well as the rapid evolution of virtual production technology and how it was fuelled by restrictions created by the pandemic. She also gives her thoughts on artificial intelligence and its potential to democratize the industry by making advanced tools accessible to indie filmmakers.

There is not an area on this facility I have not work in at a high level. In 2020 my own personal healing journey led me to what is my current stage in life. I healed myself and helped healing in my family and circle of friends and decided to branch out to help others. In 2022 I started working on my certification as a Holistic Life Coach and Mind-Body Practitioner which will be complete summer of 2023. André van Heerden loves every aspect of production and it shows. The talented filmmaking hyphenate has come through the wars of independent filmmaking, still full of faith, still smiling and still eager for more. Van Heerden's wildly popular breakout film, Revelation (1999), starring Jeff Fahey, Nick Mancuso and supermodel Carol Alt, was on the best-seller lists for over two years and led the way in revolutionizing the faith-based film genre. Following that success van Heerden helmed the next popular installment, Tribulation, starring Gary Busey, Margot Kidder and comedian Howie Mandel (2000). Judgment (2001) a courtroom thriller starring L.A Law's Corbin Bernsen, the A Team's Mr. T and Armageddon's Jessica Steen was both written and directed by van Heerden. Van Heerden's Deceived (March 2002), a 21st century supernatural thriller starring Judd Nelson and Academy Award® winner Louis Gossett Jr., won "Film/Video of the Year" from Christian Beats, while the film's musical score was nominated for "Best Musical Score" at the DVD Premiere Awards. Veteran Director of Photography George Tirl (Steel Dawn) was impressed with van Heerden's burgeoning talents. "André is extremely gifted and committed to absolute quality," says Tirl of the young director. Similarly, actors who have worked with van Heerden (from Oscar winners and nominees to popular stars) are eager to do so again and all readily praise his collaborative, professional and compelling style. In addition to directing, van Heerden has played other significant roles. He co-produced the feature Left Behind: the Movie (2000), starring Kirk Cameron and Brad Johnson, which went on to become the number-one selling independent video of 2000. He also teamed up with the Left Behind II: Tribulation Force crew as Production Supervisor and Music Supervisor and then wrote and produced Left Behind: World at War (2005) starring Academy Award® winner Louis Gossett Jr. and Kirk Cameron. In December of 2007, van Heerden moved from his position of VP of Film at Cloud Ten Pictures to become its current CEO. Van Heerden is still also responsible for acquisitions and development . Recently he produced Saving God with Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible, Pulp Fiction), Ricardo Chavira (Desperate Housewives) and Dean McDermott (Open Range) as well as wrote and directed the cutting edge documentaries Shadow Government and Dragons or Dinosaurs?Van Heerden has also written, produced and directed three seasons of a news-style TV program, and more than half a dozen other documentaries; including such stand-out projects as Vanished (1998) and Startling Proofs (1995). Though a Texas native, Diana Brier is no stranger to living and working all over the country. Through her education and incredible work experiences, Brier has become a well-respected cheese professional and one of only 45 people in the U.S. to hold a Certified Cheese Sensory Evaluator certificate from the American Cheese Society(ACS).Prior to working in the cheese industry, Brier found herself constantly questioning what type of career to pursue. She chose an eclectic education, studying everything from Musical Theater to Business Management, yet nothing ever felt quite right.Post-college, Brier worked as a Financial Analyst in Salt Lake City, Utah when she flatlined after open heart surgery. The health scare gave her a new perspective on life, andfrom that moment on, she was only going to do what fueled her soul. On a missionto figure out what exactly that was, she applied for a job with Whole Foods, where the opportunity to work in cheese was presented. She accepted the position in May 2014, becoming Whole Foods Perishable Buyer and Cheesemonger. Without a background or education in cheese, Whole Foods put Brier in a Cheese 101 course, and it was there that she discovered that cheese made her more than just happy. Cheese had found her it was the perfect balance of right-brain creativity and left-brain methodology that Diana had been searching for her whole adult life. After leaving Whole Foods in August of 2015, Brier worked with Harmons in Draper, Utah as their Lead Cheesemonger, working with over 150 cheeses. She moved on to Park City, Utah in November of 2015 as the Assistant Cheesemaker with Deer Valley Resort for two ski seasons and specialized in making soft-ripened cheeses. In May of 2017, Brier became the Production Supervisor for Rogue Creamery in Central Point, Oregon, one of the most well-respected creameries in the U.S. There, she supervised and coached a team of more than a dozen cheesemakers as they crafted and aged the beautiful cheeses for which Rogue Creamery is famous. In March of 2019, Brier decided that she wanted to call Las Vegas her forever home and joined MGP Food as a Cheese Consultant and Educator, leading multiple programs and consulting with chefs all over The Valley. In Julyof 2020, Brier became the Owner and Director of Cheese ofValley Cheese & Wine, Las Vegas longest running cheese and wine store. So, do you try and piece things together or do you 'pull yourself up by your bootstraps' and move on? Very wise words that sure came in handy later on. Having your Doctoral degree and then writing a book about Aliens, what?  It's a journey that my next guest, Dr. Bridget Brown shares with us. Her mom never attended college but her daughter sure did -receiving her doctorate in American Studies.  "Loved spending time with her children",  her mother's favorite thing to do and such an important one at that.

She talks about being the first in her family to be born in America. How she went from going to school to be a dentist but ended up being a producer. How she puts together a shoot where everyone gets along even if they've never met before and the time a photographer ended up literally drawing the short straw and had to do a shitty job that no one on set wanted to do.

I had the privilege to interview her in person at a Women of Film Networking Event I helped put together with my friends Bex Francis and Samantha Henderson-and our group For the Love of Cinema. My first guest has a bit of a puzzle to try and solve regarding her mom.  Feature film Production Supervisor, Peggy Robinson's mom was a New York City foundling but Peg didn't find out till much later in life. So, do you try and piece things together or do you 'pull yourself up by your bootstraps' and move on? Very wise words that sure came in handy later on.Having your Doctoral degree and then writing a book about Aliens, what?  It's a journey that my next guest, Dr. Bridget Brown shares with us. Her mom never attended college but her daughter sure did -receiving her doctorate in American Studies.  "Loved spending time with her children",  her mother's favorite thing to do and such an important one at that.

Why Listen: This is the first interview I’ve done with a Production Supervisor, and it is a fantastic way to start with this career field. Chris does perhaps the best job of any guest I’ve had on the show of breaking down what this role looks like - what it looks like across industries and different sized companies, including pay scales, as well as the specific traits from the military that will help you - and hinder you - in this career path. We also talk about differences in communication when you leave the military, and how to approach this in a way that will be easier for you; the unpredictability inherent in the civilian job market; how leadership differs from one industry to the next and more.   About Chris: Chris Lee is a Production Supervisor at PCC Structurals, and has spent over 5 years in the functional role of Production Supervisor in a variety of industries. He started out at West Point, and served as an Infantry Officer in the Army for 8 years, with two deployments to Afghanistan.

Born and raised in the Midwest to a very conservative, faith-based, working-class family, he observed early on, first just intrigued, then puzzled and eventually dumbfounded, by the inconsistencies and down-right contradictions of those in authority in terms of “what-they-said” vs. “what-they-did”, and particularly, “what-they-said-they-knew”. He was fortunate to have had several key “influencers” during this time who were patient with his development. Some were healthily demanding, others were masterful at the Socratic method.Following my under-grad and graduate work in Psychology, I taught Psychology at a small, private college, and soon after transitioned into industry and worked as a Production Supervisor. Several years later, he transitioned into Health Care, in the Human Resources arena. During these years he was introduced to “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” (Stephen Covey) and became a certified facilitator, presenting this program to businesses, schools, churches and jails. He now volunteers with a variety of organizations focusing on optimizing healthy, effective human development. The 7 Habits are his template for the design, implementation, and assessment of those strategies. Of course, it is a lifelong process.“This bio would be disastrously incomplete if not for the mention (better the highlighting) of the immeasurable influence my wife of over 50 years, 4 grown “kids” and the joy of 10 grandchildren. It is a gift beyond words to hear, from even the youngest of these, the seeds of the questions that will, and rightly so, take a lifetime to explore and live out.”

Welcome to She Leads Podcast Season 4, Episode 14! This episode of She Leads Podcast features Talitha Beverly founder of HR Strong. Talitha Beverly is a diversity advocate, HR Professional, and workplace healer who leads her life like the Boss she is. To hear Talitha Beverly’s take on leadership, listen to her interview as she discusses ethical leadership, embracing our womanly powers, and having a growth mindset. Talitha Beverly’ Bio Talitha Beverly is a nontraditional HR professional with a degree is in Biochemistry from Florida State University. Her career began as a 3rd shift Production Supervisor making beer at Anheuser-Busch. Talitha became a great business partner by working in the business. She has always been hands on to ensure I have a thorough knowledge and understanding, so she could train others on what to do, and how & why they are doing it. Talitha was introduced to HR after participating on a Diversity Panel for women in manufacturing. She developed a passion for HR realizing she could make a greater impact in the business and people’s lives.  Talitha worked for the best companies in the world; Coca-Cola Enterprises, Nestle USA, and Borden Dairy, and she has been exposed to cutting edge technology, world class business concepts, extraordinary leaders, and lifetime friendships. Talitha became an entrepreneur to bring my world class business exposure to business owners with great products and services who need help with compliance, business organization, and human capital strategy. Talitha has had great success streamlining my clients’ employment systems and lowering their overhead, saving them time and money. Talitha has a deep passion for what she does and she believes Human Resources is her Marketplace Ministry.  Talitha is a workplace healer, who fixes companies, stimulates the economy and rebuilds families and communities. Nicole Walker’s Interview Commentary I really enjoyed this interview with Talitha and I hope you did as well! I agree with Talitha’s stance on the importance of being an ethical leader, which includes following through, building trust, and maintaining a good reputation. Ethical leaders do what is considered to be the right thing to do, even when it is not the most popular, profitable, or convenient. Making this decision is not always easier, yet the rewards of doing so are priceless.  As Talitha suggested, “Don’t wish that it was easier, wish that you were better and don’t wish for less challenges, wish for more skills”. Determining what matters and prioritizing values is the key to leading ethically. A quote by Andrew Leigh reads, “To be an ethical leader is indeed to be different. This kind of leader acknowledges the complexity of running a responsible business, yet tries to do it anyway.” I admire that Talitha was chosen as the executive of her dad’s estate, especially considering she is the youngest of her siblings. Leadership traits and capabilities do not have an associated age, leadership is defined by character. Talitha handled her responsibility by taking on and embracing the duties she was given to make her dad proud, all while she was grieving. Successful leaders get the job done, and Talitha did just that. Being recognized as a leader is a great gift, which can help to open our eyes if we are not already aware of this. People often see in us things we do not see in ourselves, which is why it’s important to be open to accepting feedback and taking on new challenges. I can relate to Talitha’s experience of being humbled by her failures, as I experienced the same. Being able to self-reflect, realize, and then admit that you missed something is not the most fun or easiest thing to do, yet it is super important for continued growth. As Talitha mentioned, we need both grit and a growth mindset to sustain success. Failures usually have a positive experience buried within, if we are willing to dig deep to figure it out. If we want to be successful we must allow our failures to humble us which provides the power needed to work harder, do our best, and never give up. A quote by Amine Ayad reads, “Be humble to see your mistakes, courageous to admit them, and wise enough to correct them”. Takeaway Talitha mentioned the importance of holding focus groups and getting feedback on ideas and projects before deciding to move forward. This helps us to ensure we are giving our customers what they want and need, as opposed to moving blindly based on our thoughts. Understanding the true needs of others will help us avoid working in vain and missing the mark. I will make it my business to ask for feedback and support from others to get my ideas off the ground, as I do not want to do any work in vain. A quote by Tennessee Williams reads, “Life is an unanswered question, but let’s still believe in the dignity and importance of the question.” Leadership Challenge My leadership challenge for you would be to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopt into your life.  I know it’s hard to absorb too much information at one time and it’s even harder to try and implement too many changes at once.  When I attend a training or listen to podcasts I aim to walk away with a least one thing that stuck out to me and one way that I can change as a result.  I challenge you to do the same!  If you decide to take me up on my challenge I would love to know about your key take way.  If you care to share please go to the She Leads Podcast Discussion Group on FaceBook and leave your comment under the Takeaway Thursday post for Season 4 Episode 14. The morning after he sat down for this podcast, Oliver Janney hopped on a plane from Washington, DC to Norman, Oklahoma. Why? He could not pass up the chance to be a part of the faculty at the famed NPPA News Video Workshop. Janney has a pretty busy day job; he is the senior field production supervisor at the DC bureau for CNN. He monitors dozens of photojournalists who fly all over the world to cover the biggest stories. But he also used to be one of those photojournalists in the field, and before he reached the national heights of CNN, he got a kick-start by attending the workshop in Norman. Janney is my guest on Episode #52 of the Telling The Story podcast. "That one week truly changed the trajectory of my career," Janney told me. "I thought I knew what I was doing before that, and I came out of that week questioning everything, excited, and just fired up." I met Janney two weeks ago when we both spoke at a different NPPA workshop: the Northern Short Course in Fairfax, Va. I truly enjoyed hearing his perspective as a photojournalist who has experienced both local and national newsrooms. I wanted to bring his insights to the recorded audience of this podcast, and Janney happily obliged. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #52: Oliver Janney, senior field production supervisor, CNN appeared first on Telling The Story.

In this episode, I will be talking to my good friend Trevor Fast on why he likes chocolate so much and what happens when you follow your passion. About Dandelion Chocolates: Dandelion Chocolate is a bean-to-bar chocolate factory in the Mission District of San Francisco. We opened our workshop out of a lifetime love of chocolate. Our friends often said that given enough time, it seemed inevitable that one of us would open a chocolate factory. They watched as we experimented with growing small cacao plants in our apartments, pan roasted beans in the oven, and ate our way through the many of the chocolate shops of the world. In early 2010, we decided to share our craft chocolate with our friends and family and have expanded since. Currently, in our factory in the Mission district of San Francisco, we roast, crack, sort, winnow, grind, conch, and temper small batches of beans and then mold and package each bar by hand. By sourcing high quality beans and carefully crafting tiny batches, we try to bring out the individual flavors and nuances of each bean. We’re excited to bring artisan bean-to-bar chocolate back to the bay area. Like many, we miss Scharffen Berger now that they moved east to join Hershey’s. We lost our local source for cocoa nibs and some of our favorite bars of dark chocolate. We hope and aspire to take over where others have left off and bring quality, local chocolate back to the area. About Trevor Fast: This interview within Dandelion speaks for itself:  We’d like you to meet Trevor, one of our lead chocolate makers who has an endless supply of corny jokes and puns that we never hesitate to steal and use as our own.  Q: What is your superpower? A: The ability to tell jokes. Q: Tell me your best joke. A: How many tickles does it take to make an octopus laugh?  Q: How many? A: Ten tickles. Q: (pause) That’s your best joke? A: No. It’s one of my best jokes. Q: How many do you have? A: Infinite. Q: That’s a lot of jokes.  A: Have you ever seen an elephant hiding in a tree? Q: No. A: That’s because they’re so good at it.
