Music intro: Gail NoblesStory by: Gail NoblesWhen Love Calls came from Atlantic Starr's third studio album, Radiant. The song is written by David Lewis and Wayne Lewis. When Love Calls Peaked at number five on billboard's R&B chart and number 80 on billboard's dance music chart in 1981. The lyrics said: When love calls You better answer Cause it might be a big mistake if you decide to hesitate. The single is a pretty good R&B and dance song. You may know Atlantic star from singing the hits Always, Secret Lovers, and Masterpiece. You may also know them from singing One Lover, At a Time, If Your Heart Isn't In It, and My First Love. The group started in the 1970s and they were singing in the 80s They have changed and replaced members. There were some members that had solo careers. They were plentiful in members. I think now the band has four members and still sound great and still singing and performing. You can follow the group for the official Instagram for Atlantic Starr. I'm Gail Nobles. Give Atlantic Starr's single When Love Calls a listen.Thank you for tuning in to Sound Flave.

Music was My First Love with Darryl Hurs - Episode 112 We are delighted to be speaking with a legend in the music industry today! Darryl Hurs is the Founder of Indie Week in Toronto. He is also the Managing Director of Downtown Global. Darryl has created online conferences and worked with famous bands and musicians like U2, Madonna, Beyonce, Jay-Z, and Dave Matthews. Darryl is a fascinating individual! In this episode, he tells his story, talks about music, marketing, and engagement, and paints a vivid picture of the future of conferences. We hope you enjoy listening to today's captivating conversation with Darryl Hurs! Bio: Darryl Hurs has a 25+ year history in the music business, including launching and running one of Canada's largest music showcase festivals and the conference, Indie Week. In the past two years, he founded three new online conferences: Music Pro Summit, indie101, and SCREENxSCREEN. Recently hired as the Managing Director for Downtown Music in Canada heading the Canadian operations for Fuga, Songtrust, Adrev, Found.ee, CD Baby, and Downtown Music Services. His past positions include design and branding/marketing for Live Nation as a freelancer (projects included a corporate rebrand and logo design, launching VIPNATION.com, work for U2, Nickelback, Madonna, Beyonce, Jay-Z, and Dave Matthews) retail buyer at HMV, and booker for one of Toronto's top live music venues (The Rivoli). Growing up in Canada Darryl grew up in Edmonton. He already knew in grade six that he wanted to get into the music business. The music industry in Canada was in Toronto, so he moved there when he was older, looking to do what he does now. Darryl's story Darryl wanted to be a musician, so he studied guitar at MacEwan University in Edmonton. Then he joined a band and moved with it from Edmonton to Toronto. When the band moved back to Edmonton, Darryl remained in Toronto. He knew nobody there, so he started networking, volunteering, hustling, playing, and auditioning. He began carving out his career when he became a booker for a venue, started managing bands, and did all the promotions and bookings for the bands he was in. Then he took a desktop publishing course and started earning a living doing graphics and design. Live Nation He landed Live Nation as a client for eight or nine years, during which time he also launched VIPNATION.Com for them, rebranded the company, and did event marketing and advertising for several famous artists. He gained experience in marketing and promoting events and engaging fans. A promotion Darryl has been the country rep for CD Baby in Canada for three years. At the end of last year, he received a promotion and is now the Managing Director for Canada for Downtown Global. Covid When Covid hit, they lost everything and started doing conferencing online. Since then, they have launched another three successful other online music conferences. They now have several different projects on the go and are on par with where they were at the start of Covid. Indie Week Darryl created Indie Week because no festivals in Toronto focused on local artists. It was a music festival and also a music conference. Just before Covid, Indie Week in Toronto was doing about 240 bands from all around the world for four nights at 24 music venues in downtown Toronto. (Before that, they were doing the UK, but they stopped when Brexit happened.) In Indie Week, they got the industry out to look at the bands and vote for the band that deserved to play at Indie Week in the UK. Then, at Indie Week in the UK, they would pick a band to bring to Canada. Comafest Since Covid, they have partnered with a Comafest in Brazil. They have taken an artist there every year and intend to take a few artists there in August 2022. Their objective is to build the international partnerships they started online, partner with other existing festivals, and take artists to those festivals. Online conferences They plan to continue their conference online. What set their conference apart from all other conferences happening during the Covid lockdown was that they were 110% invested in doing it online. Positive feedback They have had a lot of praise and positive feedback for their online conferences! They could get higher-level speakers because they did not have to fly anyone anywhere. The Indie Week online Music Conference They took the music conference and broke it down into different demographics to go online. Now, Screen X Screen, which is about music and tech, happens in February each year. Indie 101 is about education, and it happens in May. Music Pro Summit hosts high-level industry discussions and takes place in September. Indie Week is their hub, so they try to bring everything together in one place and focus on international connections. Many people have said that it is one of the best online conferences they have ever attended. The platform Their platform, Whova, is open to engagement and connecting with others. All their programs are recorded and people can talk online for three months. So any attendee can still go through the speaker and attendee list and message them after the conference. People are learning how to use the platform and taking advantage of it! A community Their free weekly sessions focus on being real. The sessions have helped grow their community because people love having the connection! Value People add value. Darryl believes that if you offer help first things will happen, and if you do something that engages with people, it will become valuable. So focus on people first, and monetization later. Online is working well They are planning to stay online because it is working well. They are also looking for ways to utilize what they have done online and do something in person when the time is right to do so. The goal The goal for Indie Week is that the participants make connections that turn into a real business. Online versus face-to-face People make a mistake when they try to recreate a face-to-face event online. Indie Week is an online experience, and the organizers are making the most of it! They are not trying to do what they would normally do in person. Valuable experience They gained valuable experience from doing four online events in one year. They learned to utilize the positive aspects of the online experience and capitalize on them. AI Darryl believes that AI will make it possible for anything to happen musically in the future! Music marketing for artists Everyone in the world is online today, so artists need to plug into social marketing. That means using Facebook ads and Instagram ads and knowing how to use the data to locate their audience and the areas where people are tuning in the most. Then they need to start feeding different ads to that market to build a story. They can also use billboard ads, magazines, and online advertising programs like Found.ee. How can artists get known? Artists should focus on what they do and how to use tools to elevate that. They should focus on where their audience is and try to get as many fans as possible to engage. Engaging audiences at conferences People need to talk less about business and more about who they are and how they are doing. Digital is global, so there is value in considering how to elevate an in-person event to online. Being inclusive is also vital. When you live with someone for a long time, the stories pile up. That’s especially true when the people who live together are siblings, because not only are you with each other all the time, but you’re also going about the business of growing up, and learning to handle the things that life throws at you. Case in point, me and my sister. Early on, I saw the need to tell some stories about how we’ve tackled projects together as adults, but I haven’t gone into great detail about our childhood, with the exception of the time she dotted me in my eye. So now, as I think I promised, it’s time to go a little further back into our childhood, mainly the early eighties, and tell you about some of the things that we got into. Parents, you may cringe, because there is a bit of blood, as well as something that would have probably gotten us labelled as terrorists in today’s culture of jumping to conclusions, and cancelling anybody that breathes in a way some people disagree with. Today, we tend to cover our kids in bubble wrap, but back then, it was a different time. I’m Michael Blackston. Why don’t you slip on your favorite Underoos, grab a bowl of cereal, and settle in for the Saturday morning cartoon that is my Funny Messy Life. _________________________ When we were kids, my sister spent a lot of her time looking after me, and a lot of her time being annoyed by me. The rest of time, were were in what more cultured Americans refer to as, “Kahoots”. I don’t know if that’s the right way to spell it, and I don’t care. Doesn’t matter. Me and Stephanie engaged in them because it was the eighties - a time just before the dawn of all the technology that keeps kids inside, punching keypads and video controllers with their thumbs. I would say it was safer for kids to play outside unsupervised back then, but by the time I’m done with this episode, that won’t hold water. Steph is my big sister, so there were times in our childhood when it was up to her to save the day. One of those times came on an afternoon when we were very young, and found ourselves playing in the yard with the boy that lived next door. I won’t give his name, but if you’d like to hear about some of the other trouble he got me into, go back and listen to the episode called, My First Love, when he introduced me to the famous, fabulous, four-letter F-word. You can’t read about it - I used bullet points to tell that story. Sorry. Anyway, he was mean. He was my sister’s age, or maybe a little older, and he liked to pick on me because I had not yet trained to be a ninja assassin, although I had aspirations. Behind the house, tucked a little way into the trees, was an old dog pen my dad had built. It had been years since there had been a dog back there, and nature had grown up all around it, so that you had to go down a short path to get to it. The path was bracketed on both sides by poison oak, stinging nettles, rabbit tobacco, and Devil’s Snare. Oh yeah, and Kudzu. It’s Georgia. There’s always gonna be Kudzu. The fence surrounding the thing was probably eight feet high, with rusty points of chicken wire sticking straight into the air like the evil fingers of a robot Satan, stuck in a perpetual freeze as they curse God. And I feel like I need to stop for a few seconds and make a note in my topics list about a future episode. Let’s see … chewing wild rabbit tobacco with my cousin who did stupidly stupid things with me … because we were stupid. I know there are people out there who don’t care for the word, “stupid”, but it’s okay because I’m calling myself and cousin it, and also … we were. Back to Steph crucifying herself. Wait … What?! Is this going to be graphic? Yeah. A little bit.. I don’t know how or why the neighbor boy got his hands on the banana seat from my bicycle, but he did. I think the equation in his mind probably looked a little something like this (Mathematicians, don’t laugh at me. I’m an artist. Just an artist.) Fun + Laughs∞ = (Banana seat + high fence)(Devil’s Snare) x (Michael crying) —————————————————— (Butt whoopin’/meanness) ¶ ÷ quota of evil doin’ However it went down in his mind, the fact remains that he got his hand on the banana seat from my bicycle and chucked it over the fence, into the forbidden dog pen, and the door to the pen had a chain on it. If you’ll refer back to my equation, the objective was to create fun and laughter, by virtue of my tears. Mission accomplished. Stephanie didn’t want to be the one to have to climb over the fence, but somebody was going to have to if I was going to shut up. I understand the compulsion of some people to be repulsed by the term, “Shut up”, but we were kids, and I needed to. The neighbor boy certainly wasn’t going to suddenly find a spark of mercy and climb to rescue my bicycle seat, so that left Steph. I was too little and overcome with grief anyway. Steph found a purchase for her feet and began the climb, fussing at the neighbor boy the whole time. Devil’s Snare reached out for her, awakened by my screams, her anger, and the stench of the neighbor boy’s untethered glee. She managed to find her way safely over the fence, into the pen, and tossed my banana seat back over, triumphantly. But the journey was far from over. The chain kept the door locked from the inside and out. Steph would have to make her way over the fence one more time to get out. She found a purchase once again for her feet, and began the arduous task of pulling her body toward the top. And she did it. Swinging her leg over the top of the fence, she tried to find a foothold again, to let herself down. And she found that foot hold. She swung her other leg over, and that’s when everything went wrong. Stephanie and I have always been fantastic climbers. We had Sweetgum trees all over the place in our yard, and because technology had not yet advanced to the stage of letting us send a digital version of ourselves up into the trees, carrying swords and machine guns, we had to go up into the real trees. It doesn’t escape me that there are some people out there who don’t care at all for the very mention of machine guns, but we were kids, and our dad taught us at an early age how to handle a firearm, so if we’d been allowed to, we surely would have strapped M-16s to our backs as we climbed. Dad would’ve frowned on that, though. The point is, that we climbed the trees all the way to the top, as far as we could go without them bending over, so Steph losing her footing on the fence was not an expected occurrence. Lose her footing she did, though, and she fell. She didn’t fall far. Those rusty fingers of metal at the top of the fence got into the game by stopping her fall. One of them tore deep into her wrist and held her, dangling and screaming. Now we were both screaming. She was screaming in pain and terror, I was screaming in grief and terror for Steph, and the neighbor boy, seeing what had happened, started screaming too, in terror for the butt whoopin’ he was likely to take, both from his dad when he got home, and Steph, if she made it down from there alive. I don’t recall how she ended up getting down, but she did, bloody wrist and all. I’m sure I remember it worse that it really was, and I probably got some of the details fuzzy. I was small, after all, and saw the whole thing through a blurry glaze of tears at the thought of not having my banana bicycle seat. I’ve always respected Stephanie’s chivalry in that moment, and I think she still has a scar on her wrist to show for it, but that’s the least of what could have happened to us. Later in years, when I was a preteen, and she was a teen, we found ourselves in possession of some firecrackers. I think they were called Black Cats. They were the kind you light, then throw to hear a loud bang, and that’s pretty much it. We stuck a few up the butts of actions figure and lit them just to watch how many arms and legs would go flying. Unfortunately for me, they were also the fast fuse kind. Why unfortunately for me? Well, Steph handed me a Black Cat one afternoon with the following plan. “You hold it, I’ll light it, and you throw it real fast.” I, being a MO-ron, agreed. Now, I get it that some of you out there might not want to hear the word Mo-ron. You consider it rude and insulting, but agreeing to this was not one of my finest moments and carries, I believe, the proper information to categorize me as such. I held the firecracker, and she struck a flame to the lighter. The fuse was long enough, but I suppose that in her excitement, she lost some control of her motor skills, because instead of lighting the fast fuse at the end, she opted for the lighting-the-firecracker-right-at-the-base-of-the-explosice maneuver. I barely managed to get it out of my hand before it went off. Had it actually exploded in my hand, I could have been seriously injured. As it was, I got enough distance from it - a few inches - that it only FELT like somebody chopped off my hand. I was numb for a couple of days. So, did that experience serve to teach us a valuable lesson? Yes it did. It taught us that it’s possible to live another day, and we came up with the most sinister plan yet. There were a lot of those firecrackers left, but we didn’t care for throwing them any more. They were powerful, and they hurt. We needed a way to harness their full potential, and better yet, all at once. We knew three things: A glass jar would hold all the powder if we meticulously cut through the paper of each firecracker and dumped the powder into it. If we drilled a tiny hole into the bottom of the jar and inserted a very long wick, we could place the jar, and all of its powder, at the center of Brady Bottoms - an area down the road from our house, and hide behind a tree to witness our glory. If we first doused the wick in gasoline, it would surely light and find its way to the jar. And we did exactly that. Well, almost. It took us days to secretly sit in dad’s metal building with Exacto knives, cutting the firecrackers and dumping their powder into a jar, but we did it, and hid the jar away until we could figure out a way to drill a hole in the bottom of it without breaking it. Luckily for us, mom found out about our master plan, and intercepted the jar, scolding us to no end, and thanking Jesus that we’d not gone through with it. Mama was wise because she knew three things: Exploding jars break into tiny pieces of glass projectiles that fly faster than Steph or I could have dodged. We would have wanted to see the explosion, so even though we had planned to hide our bodies behind a tree, our stupid idiot MO-ron faces would have been right in the line of fire. We had constructed a bomb, and even in the eighties, that’s illegal. We could have died. We tried to argue, but mama told us to shut up, and that she’d rather see us playing with machine guns in the tops of the Sweetgum trees, than have us become pasty little terrorists. So the first Sister Sister episode involved happy things like birthday cakes, the theatre, and parade floats, while this one involved grisly scenes, blood, and weaponry - some legal, others not so much. Needless to say, my sister and I have lived interesting lives, and there’s still a lot to tell. I’ll get to that on down the road. Until then, parents, watch your kids closely, and kids - don’t be stupid.

Avant is a name that has been used in the context of being original or innovative but the singer/songwriter from Cleveland has transformed the word into a powerhouse brand. Since breaking out on the music scene with his first platinum hit singles, “Separated” and “My First Love”—he has been on a non-stop journey having released seven albums in the last 15 years. Avant has toured with some of the biggest names in the R&B world from Joe, Jagged Edge and Keith Sweat. He is preparing for the new album release, The VIII in September 2015. This spring he released the debut single from the album, “Special” which is romantic song that breathes new life into love and commitment. Luke Christopher isn’t about to wait around for anybody. Instead of relying on singers or producers, the Los Angeles rapper can belt out a hook with the best of them, and he remains an accomplished producer and beat maker in his own right. On his two new EPs YSTRDY and TMRW for ByStorm Entertainment/RCA Records, his singular vision only starts to unfold, encompassing airtight rhymes, cinematic storytelling, keen wit, and a little bit of wisdom. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, music surrounded Luke. At a young age, his father turned him on to the likes of Elton John, U2, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder. However, hip-hop found him one Christmas when 2Pac’s All Eyez On Me sat under the tree. In high school, he converted the bottom bed of his bunk beds into a makeshift studio. There, he taught himself how to rap, sing, and compose beats. By his seventeenth birthday, he was ready to be properly heard, and major labels clamored for this strangely soulful and emotionally expansive style.

In 1999, Ontario Country artist Shelley Buffitt released her debut album My First Love. The acclaimed album received airplay world-wide and garnered Shelley the 1999 Nashville Tracker Magazine "Female Vocalist of the Year" (European market). Shelley was nominated at the OCMAs for Female Vocalist of the Year, as well as Album of the Year in 1999. Riding on the success of her debut album, Executive Producers at Five Star Productions decided to release Bad Side of Town in 2000. This was a wise move as that year The Ontario Country Music Association recognized Shelley's contribution to the Canadian music scene by nominating her for Female Vocalist of the Year, Rising Star and Duet of the Year (with the multi-talented songstress, Kelly Vohnn.) The album features the musicianship of Wendell Ferguson. This same year, TVOntario filmed a documentary about Shelley and her music on their show Studio 1 with Steve Paikin. In July 2014, Daddy’s Little Girl - a song from Shelley's album Beyond This Woman - was released to Canadian Country radio.
The masterful crooner is back on point with his seventh album, Face the Music (Feb. 5, 2013). Inspired by the R&B legends—Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Frankie Beverly & Maze, Luther Vandross and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds—who have been guiding lights in Avant’s career, the project marks the singer’s first release on the Capitol/EMI-distributed independent label Mo-B. But the set does more than just pay homage to R&B masters. Thanks to Avant’s inventiveness, Face the Music cooks up a tantalizing blend of contemporary and traditional sounds. Jumpstarting the buzz about the forthcoming album is lead single “You & I,” Avant’s long-anticipated reunion with duet partner Keke Wyatt. Already a top 10 hit on Billboard’s Adult R&B chart and currently climbing the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs tally, the searing love ballad revisits the natural magic Avant and Wyatt conjured on their first hit together, “My First Love.” Like many R&B singers, Avant got his start singing in the church choir. After attending Cleveland School of the Arts, he became the first act signed to NBA legend Magic Johnson’s MCA-distributed label, Magic Johnson Music (MJM). Avant’s 2000 MJM debut album, My Thoughts, spun off the Billboard No. 1 R&B hit “Separated.” That was followed by the top five hit “My First Love,” a cover of the 1983 Ren&eac

For the next one hundred and twenty minutes, I will bring you pure listening enjoyment. In this session, I have included many new vocal's and track's plus a few classics. A few songs that stand out for me are; Syren’s “My First Love”, Jimpster’s “Sleeper” and a true classic from The Black Science Orchestra – “Where were you?” In addition, I occasionally threw in some accapella bits from Pagano Featuring Stewart Who?
