This episode is part of the Meet the Maker series where we highlight an entrepreneur who is making specialty gear for ice climbers. If you've ever wanted to hear the story behind some of your favorite – and soon to be favorite – products, that's what today's conversation is about. We're doing this because we believe that thoughtfully-designed gear is more than the sum of its parts: they are crafted by folks who have decades of experience in the sport, are refined through countless iterations and testing, and brought to life with genuine passion to solve real problems. Said another way, these folks represent the heart and soul of product innovation.

MORTON, Minn. — The Lower Sioux Indian Community celebrated the opening of its new hemp-processing facility with a full day of hemp education and demonstrations on September 5, 2024. This processing plant brings the tribe one step closer to what it calls “Seed to Sovereignty,“ where the tribe creates its own supply chain: growing the hemp to be processed in the facility, where it will be made into hempcrete houses to address the housing crisis on the reservation through agriculture. This week on the Hemp Podcast, we bring you conversations from the Lower Sioux. We'll hear from Danny Desjarlais, project manager and leader of the building crew; Kristi Shane, Tribal Council treasurer; Robert Larson Jr., hempcrete mixmaster; and the “Earl of Hemp” himself, Earl Pendleton, who for many years has been the tribe's vision holder for hemp. We'll also talk to Mary Jane Oatman, executive director of the Indigenous Cannabis Industry Association and a member of the Nez Perce Tribe of the Columbia River Plateau; Rob Pero, founder of Canndigenous and a member of the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians; and Nick Hernandez, founder and CEO of Makoce Agriculture Development in Porcupine, South Dakota, and a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and a citizen of Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Plus, Ken Meyer from Complete Hemp Proeccsing and Derrick Dohmann from Horizon Hemp Seeds, North Dakota hempcrete builder Matt Marino, Minnesota inventor Bob Albertson, broadcaster Dan Lemke from the Linder Farm Network, and more. In this episode: Frank is talking to Nick Hernandez who is the CEO and Founder of 360Learning, an advisor and investor in the SaaS technology industry. He has been running 360Learning now for 10 years and grown it into one of the leading LMS platforms for corporate education. He has also secured over 200M EUR in funding from funds such as SoftBank and Silverlake. The focus of the company is on collaborative learning and he has even written a book about the topic. He is based here in Paris, France. We talk about: Why the company initially pivoted from K-12 education to corporate learning, the unique collaborative approach of 360Learning compared to traditional top-down methods, their recent acquisitions of eLamp and Looop, the influence of AI on learning & user experiences, and a solid dose of advice for emerging EdTech startups ….and lots more. Outtakes: Something that's challenging with AI right now is to build a product that's not completely going to work right now, but you're building a product for GPT-5. You're building a product for GPT-6. You're not building a product for GPT-4. And I see a lot of people thinking like if the technology was static. I see a lot of entrepreneurs, a lot of companies going to market to raise money without any structure or process. So typically, first they're talking to VCs all the time, like they're constantly raising money. It's not the best way. We're living through fantastic times. It's time to build, take risks, imagine the future. There are some risks and we can be worried about the future, but we also have a lot of opportunities to build it. So, let's focus on building.

In this episode of Delphine's Circle, we have none other than the Laguna Beach Legend himself Nick Hernandez! An innovator who pioneered competitive skim boarding as a teen, and went on to bring rock and roll with a reggae twist to the musical forefront, Nick is a talent onto his own who brings wisdom of the heart and lessons of integrity to this interview setting. Both a cherished member of the Laguna Beach community, and a dear friend, we are so happy to present this gentleman on In the Circle, and stay tuned till the end for a second performance from this beautiful soul!Common Sense is the first of Nick's bands to go really big. It's still going strong, but in its most prolific years the band sold more than 50,000 albums, with “Psychedelic Surf Groove”, and 10,000 with “State of the Nation, Now and Then”. A couple of his songs have made it to Hollywood. “Never Give Up” is a big song that made it into the movie, Speed Two, and “In Your Eyes” was in the Kingpin movie, which Nick says has got a cult following.Recently Nick recorded music with Wyland as a benefit following the Gulf oil spill disaster, a trio of albums called Blues Planet I-III. And this past winter he played with noted Hawaiian musician, Willie K in his Maui music festival along with the likes of Steven Tyler, Mick Fleetwood, and Taj Mahal.Altogether with his bands Common Sense, Nick-I, and The 133 Band, he's made 12 albums. “I like it, but I don't do enough recording,” Nick said. “I'm mostly a live artist.”There's always a crowd on Fridays at Mozambique catching Nick live with his band, Nick-I & A.D.D., and other live gigs at places such as the Coach House, the Belly Up, and the OC Fair as well as special events and corporate gigs. “You always have a dream as an artist,” he muses. “Now my dream is that The 133 Band will do the film festival circuit.” Sound like a lot of balls to juggle in the air? Toss in Nick's co-passion for surfing, and add to that his participation in Surfers Healing and you've got one busy dude.Surfers Healing is an outreach program designed to foster joy and promote surf culture in the lives of autistic youth. Nick has served on the board of directors for 17 years. The idea is to get the kids out on the waves with the assistance of able surfers. “We want to give them one nice beautiful day at the beach, and just feel normal,” says Nick. Surfers Healing was founded by the Paskowitz family because their son, Isaiah, struggled with “meltdowns and sensory overload”. Riding the waves with his father calmed him like nothing else. Now Surfers Healing provides wave rides for more than 4,500 participants in their surf camps every year. Their motto is, “One child. One family. One day at the beach.”“Now we've got enough sponsorship, we're not sleeping on the floor – we all get our own beds now!” said Nick. “It started out, ‘I'm gonna do this ‘cause it's the right thing to do', and then I loved it. We're helping these kids and it feels really good.”
Native enterprises and nonprofits are working to ensure food sovereignty for their communities and neighbors. Land access and capital are key to this mission, and philanthropic grants are often a major source of funding. However, grant money often comes with many strings attached and reporting requirements that bog down the organizations they're trying to help.Marilyn Noble's reporting in The Counter examines how philanthropies (often private foundations with large endowments) currently support Tribal communities and what advocates say they could be doing better.Read Marilyn's full piece hereThis episode is produced in collaboration with The Counter – a nonprofit, independent, nonpartisan newsroom investigating the forces shaping how and what America eats.Have a question you want answered? Times are weird and things are strange. The Corona virus is among us and we have to adjust. We are being asked to "Shelter in Place" be "Socially Distant" and Self Quarantine. For a Surfer, that may be hard...Especially when the waves are good. As more and more of California gets shut down day by day...the lingering fear that they may shut down the beach is a realistic threat. Surfers have been asked to Quarantine all around our community. I was curious how other surfers are dealing with their quarantine. Today's guest is the lead singer of the infamous Orange County Reggae group "Common Sense" Band....Nick Hernandez...AKA Nick I. Nick is a born and bread native Californian...Native Laguna Beach Surfer/Skimmer/Musician that now lives in Baja Mexico. Nick is a father, a Grandfather, a musician, a singer, a dog lover, a fisherman and a soft top...step off....skim style....down the line specialist. Nick is now Quarantining himself in his home in the east cape of Baja/Cabo...nestled up on the hill. We checked in with Nick I to see if the panic on his side compares to the madness over the boarder. Heres my conversation with Nick Hernandez...Nick I
Hey everyone! For this episode of Life Deck, I'm having a conversation with one of the founders of Hydro Manila and Midas Music, Nick Hernandez. Nick and I go way back, around 2007 as far as I can remember from our days as being club promoters, and seeing him being successful at what he does now is truly remarkable. One thing I can tell you is that to never doubt the crazy ideas this man has. I did one before, and I'm still kicking myself in the butt for not buying in to one of those ideas he pitched to me before. Must be the alcohol thinking for me back then. On this episode… Nick Hernandez, director of the Food Sovereignty Initiative and member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, shares his personal definition of food sovereignty and how it can be as simple as returning to the way that Native people lived, pre-colonialism. In many cases, this fancy term “food sovereignty” is just, as Nick puts it “what we did.” Tune in to hear about… The incredible changes the Thunder Valley Community Development Corp. has made in its 10 years of development work How they are empowering Lakota youth to be involved in the food that comes to their plates. How the Food Sovereignty Initiative is using chickens to regenerate both a food system and its soil (and why Nick and his colleagues fondly call them “Buffalo Chickens”!) The way health disparities can be traced back to the astounding percentage of food that is shipped to, rather than grown on, the Reservation

Filling in for the Stallion is Nick Hernandez, aka Dr Green Thumb. Though he can't fill the Stallions witty shoes, he brings his own cup of tea to the show.
Spend the hour with Supernova "Nick I" Hernandez, Laguna's favorite singer, songwriter, musician, big wave surfer, humanitarian, founder of Common Sense band, and always the coolest guy in the room. Plus we jam a few songs together.
A twist. Nick Hernandez is the host of Community Matters on KZUM in Lincoln, Nebraska. He interviewed me live on his show. I recorded it, added some more conversation between us and made a program of it! We talk about religion, life's strange turns, and positive psychology!
