On this episode, hosts Peter Ravella and Tyler Buckingham are joined by guest host Taylor Goelz (host of ASPN's Ocean Decade Show! and Program Manager of the Shipping Decarbonization Initiative at The Aspen Institute) to discuss the exciting future trends of maritime shipping decarbonization. Joining the show is Bryan Comer, the Marine Program Lead at The International Council on Clean Transportation. The conversation covers why it is important to decarbonize maritime shipping and how can it be done, and well as covering the legal and regulatory framework that governs maritime transportation. They also discuss new technologies that are being used and developed such as hydrogen and sail, as well as failures, such as the rapidly growing number of ships are being fitted with exhaust gas cleaning systems, or “scrubbers,” as a way to comply with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) 2020 global fuel sulfur limit. Scrubbers remove sulfur from ship exhaust by spraying a buffer solution, usually seawater, over it and then discharging the washwater overboard, often without treatment. The washwater is more acidic than the surrounding seawater and contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, particulate matter, nitrates, nitrites, and heavy metals including nickel, lead, copper, and mercury. Scrubber washwater is toxic to some marine organisms, harms others, and can worsen water quality. Note: Since this show was recorded, the IMO conducted meetings that were disappointing once again. The short term measures for reducing emissions can actually lead to increases in emission and lack any sort of enforcement. Proposals for medium term measures were "punted" to the fall, so stay tuned to future episode as we follow this issue and the IMO's actions.

On this episode Market Development Agronomists Craig White and Matt Willis talk about early season issues including controlling the “green bridge” of weeds , insects and diseases brought on by summer rainfall in Western Australia and important topics relating to planting of the 2021 broadacre crops. Matt and Craig and the Market Development team right around Australia are updating advisers and growers on important topics, and how Bayer solutions can work for them in the field. Roundup UltraMax – getting the best out of this weed knockdown product to help manage the green bridge and moisture conservation. Not all glyphosates are equal. EverGol Energy – Second to none Smut and Bunt control in cereals, suppression of Rhizoctonia, Crown rot and pythium either applied on seed, in furrow application or both. Matt and Craig discuss Mateno® Complete herbicide. This herbicide is currently under development by Bayer for grass and broadleaf weed control in wheat and barley, with flexible Incorporated by Sowing (IBS) or Early Post Emergence (EPE) application timings. Field trial experience from previous seasons and results are very promising. We will be demonstrating Mateno Complete throughout Australia in 2021, and there is sure to be a trial or demonstration in a paddock near you. At the time of publication of this podcast, Mateno Complete is not a registered product. An application for Registration has been submitted. Sakura® (850WG granule) and NEW Sakura® Flow (480SC liquid) is in high demand, as they have set the standard for pre-emergence grass weed control in wheat and some pulse crops. With a decade of reliable field performance with up to 12 weeks residual grassweed control, Sakura herbicide is now available in 2 formulations, and four convenient pack sizes including the very popular 100 hectare pack (Sakura WG) and a new 50 hectare Sakura Flow (liquid) pack. This allows for great flexibility at the boom spray and performance in the paddock. And there is an interesting piece about the Dingo Fence in Australia built in 1885. It influences the vegetation depending which side and can be seen from space. Bayer has a dedicated IWM - Weed Control website www.mix-it-up.com.au with useful tools and information for managing weeds on your farm. Note: Since recording this episode, there have been more documented cases of severe allergic reactions to the vaccine. However, the number of cases relative to the number of vaccinations is still extremely low indicating the vaccine is generally safe. Often when we use the term "gut feeling" we're referring to a premonition of something bad about to happen. This episode of Out to Lunch is exactly the opposite. We're looking back at that gut feeling we had BC (Before Corona) when our health and housing issues were a little different. Staring at the beginning - you've probably heard of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. At the foundation of the pyramid is our need for shelter and food. Even if you're a real New Orleanian and you think about food a lot, there's a pretty good chance you don't spend too much time pondering the 40 trillion bacteria living in your gut. Dr. Dale Pfost does. Dale's company, Microbiome Therapeutics, has launched a product called BiomeBliss. It's a step up from probiotics. BiomeBliss is prebiotics. (NOTE: Since the recording of this show BiomeBliss and Microbiome Therapeutics have evolved into something new and different, though right now exactly what that is is yet to be revealed.) On the basic need for shelter, Jonathan Tate and his company, OJT, are an architecture and design company who are taking a novel approach to where you live. They're buying up irregular size lots that nobody wants in desirable New Orleans neighborhoods, and building irregular shaped homes with irregular low price tags. Peter Ricchiuti went Out to Lunch at Commander's Palace with Dale, Jonathan, and over lunch the conversation takes a whole new look at our most fundamental human needs. If you're a regular follower of Out to Lunch and familair with New Orleans, this is another in the series of conversations – of which there seem to be an increasing number – colored with a certain incredulity that such original thinking and world-leading scientific break-throughs are happening here.  You can find photos from this show by Jill Lafleur at our website. And here's more lunchtime conversation about health, with "Vagina Whisperer" Sara Reardon and hearing expert Dr. Lana Joseph.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Colonization and capitalism have truly affected the way that we show up as students, teachers, and learners and so this episode helps us pull back the curtain on these often unseen forces at play.Learn more about Dr. Derrick Hudson here: https://hass.mines.edu/project/hudson-derrick/Note: Since recording this episode in July 2020 I have started my graduate program at Harvard and Derrick is working on the Center for Race, Culture, and Society and Colorado School of Mines. Drink Sake. Stay Soba. It’s this simple mantra that has made Seattle’s Hannyatou and its neighboring soba destination Kamonegi almost overnight mainstays for the sake-inspired community of the Pacific Northwest. It was almost exactly one year ago that Justin sat down with and renowned soba chef Mutsuko Soma and sake specialist partner-in-crime Russell King at their (then) newly-opened fermented creation-driven sake bar, Hannyatou. The pair’s appreciation for craft along with their fearless creativity have turned their co-creation just two doors down from Chef Soma’s soba haven into one of the most exciting sake stops, not just in the Northwest, but arguably in the country. In less than three years, how do you go about bringing to life, not one, but two hit restaurants able to maneuver right for that elusive sweet spot between tradition and free exploration, pushing the envelope for traditional Japanese food and beverage while making it feel like a completely natural progression? That’s what we went to find out.You might also be wondering why an interview conducted almost a year ago is just now making it to the airwaves. Originally scheduled for an early-Spring release, 2020 happened. We could have brought the interview out sooner, but given all that was happening and the surplus of challenges facing restaurants everywhere, we wanted to make sure we had a show that represented the dedication and hard work of Soma and Russell to the best of our ability. Not wanting to shower them with questions while they were scrambling to feel out their new format in the current reality, we decided to wait a bit.The good news is that the latter half of the show you get to hear Justin catch up with Russell as he tells us all about how the last 6 months have played out, their setbacks and successes, the evolution of both Kamonegi and Hannyatou, and their positive vision for the still unforeseeable future of sake dining and sales in Seattle.Grab your favorite ochoko or guinomi and settle in for a journey into Seattle’s sake heartland this week. While you’re sipping along,  you’re welcome to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts, or reach out to us at questions@sakeonair.com. You can keeps tabs on us on  Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, or join us over on YouTube, as well. Thanks for tuning in with us this week and we’ll be back with more Sake On Air in a couple of weeks.Kampai! *Note: Since our follow-up interview with Russell King only a few short weeks ago, he has announced that he’ll be leaving Hannyatou to pursue other endeavors and focus on family. All of us here at Sake On Air wish him happiness, health and success on all of his adventures to come. As we celebrate Latinx Heritage Month, we must continue to uplift the humanity of Latinx people. We need to protect immigrants from victimization and criminalization. No one should be, but too often, they are profiled for their skin color or denied the respect and dignity that every human being deserves. No one should be "othered" for merely existing. But the Latinx community is resilient, and groups like the RISE Coalition of Western Maryland are finding ways to support their community and exercise their rights. They show how we can make a better and safer community for our Latinx neighbors and Maryland as a whole. While attending Missouri State University she trained with names you’ll recognize from our local KY3: Ned Reynolds and Lisa Rose. At this point, she decided she wanted to cover sports broadcasting. One of her sports stories developed into a more personal story as a player was fighting cancer. That influenced her decision to cover a broader range of stories and circled her back to her dream of becoming a news anchor. Today’s Lesson is 334 words, a 1 min & 20-second read. Sign up here.📍 Introduction You’ll use countertops more than any other surface in the house, so you’ll want to clean them more, too. Use these tips to find your rhythm & keep those surfaces crumb-free. *Note - Since ~80% of US homes have Granite or Quartz countertops, the instructions below are geared towards those materials.  🧹 Gear: Sponge (or microfiber/bar mop)  Towel for rinsing or drying Dish soap or mild all-purpose spray  🔢 Instructions: Survey the scene; identify the messiest areas Clear clutter from countertops Dry-wipe to remove debris (e.g., crumbs), sweep into hand & dump in the sink Wash counters using a warm, wet cloth or sponge with a bit of dish soap or all-purpose spray; add spray or soap as needed  Wipe down with warm water Dry using a clean kitchen towel  📝 Notes, Tips, Tricks: Don't over-soap or over-spray. This makes rinsing much harder. Thoroughly remove soap off countertops. If not properly rinsed, a film will accumulate, creating a new kind of mess! Use a fresh cloth for rinsing if possible. It's hard to get all the soap out of your cleaning cloth.  Scanning countertops at eye level helps you see missed spots & crumbs 👀Dilute some dish soap or all-purpose cleaner in a bowl of warm water for easier access while washing. For tougher stains or messes, try a paste of baking soda & water. Wipe up spills right away to avoid scrubbing later. To disinfect now & then, spray with 70% alcohol, let sit 3-5 min. Rinse & dry.  📝 Variations/Unique NeedsGranite: if using an all-purpose cleaner, check that it’s compatible with graniteMarble: avoid acidic cleaners like vinegar or lemon juice.Tile: use a scouring powder & bleach to remove food from grout. Wood: spray cleaner on a damp cloth, not directly on the wood. 🎓 Further Studies: [Statista] Kitchen countertop materials in the U.S.[The Kitchn] How To Clean & Disinfect Granite Countertops[Consumer Reports]How to Clean Countertops & Keep Them Looking Their Best📚 Liked this lesson? Chicago comedian Jake Noll came by to dyke out about their recent top operation, giving us all the nipple-hardening details (actually, no nipples required!). We talk about what made them want to get it in the first place, the procedure itself, and financial challenges. We also talk about how different their life is now, and how others reacted to it (even though it’s none of their business). This was our first time recording in 20 days, so before we talk about tops, we start at the bottom by chewing out the women who defend terrible men in comedy. Carolyn also issues a couple of important corrections and updates from previous episodes, and we answer a very tricky listener question about being in a relationship with opposing political beliefs. We had such a great time with Jake. Be sure to check out their series, Just Call Me Ripley. (Note: Since recording the episode, Jake has changed their name, which is why you’ll hear a different name used on the audio.) -Get extra episodes by joining out Patreon community. -For related content, follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Leave Us a Review if you like what you hear! -Like our theme song?
