What happens when the world's leading non-Japanese Master of Sake Tasting joins forces with three sake brewery presidents and one of the most enthusiastic wine reps in the business? You get a deep, delicious dive into sake that's equal parts educational and intoxicating—in the best way. In this highly anticipated installment, Bella Pearson returns with “the Godfather of Sake” himself, John Gauntner, to walk us through the fascinating world of sake—from the rice fields to the bottle. Gauntner, the only non-Japanese Master of Sake Tasting certified by the Brewing Society of Japan, brings unmatched insight into the complex processes and centuries-old techniques behind Japan's national drink. Alongside Gauntner and Bella, we're joined by sake brewery presidents from Takatenjin, Kawatsuru, and Rihaku, each offering up exquisite pours that showcased the staggering range of flavor profiles—from crisp and clean to rich and unfiltered. Though we barely scratched the surface of this vast and nuanced subject, what we covered was intense, surprising, and nothing short of mind-blowing. [Ep 371] Kampai (乾杯)! Okay, I know we are redoing episodes, but can we do without the typos. It's even in the title. Oh, it's actually Shochu, not Shoju. So we are going to Japan for our spirits instead of Korea this time. We'll figure out the difference between those, and whatever else we can find about this. Kampai again, and join us as we Have a Drink. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
GOOD EVENING!!! On tonight's episode we have another movie that stars this show's favorite actor, NICHOLAS CAGE!!! For all intents and purposes, one of the greatest actors of a generation. Yes his movies are hit and miss, but they never cease to ENTERTAIN!!! And we are definitely entertained here. In this movie he plays the monster of all movie monsters, DRACULA!!! He taps into his inner Bela Lugosi and totally oozes creepiness. But you should listen and watch. As always, we do this with a drink in our hands and song in our hearts... KAMPAI!!!! BANZAI!!!! I am soooooo excited to present our newest episode. As all of you listeners know, I am an SAMURAI MOVIE NUT!!!! That is no more prevalent than in this review of Akira Kurosawa's foray into the western genre but with a samurai flair, Yojimbo. You can't overstate how the western motion pictures influenced Kurosawa and how Mofune's lone Ronin (masterless samurai) totally represents the lone gunman. But let's not get too far into it. Listen and enjoy how we discuss everything from the western topic to the Meiji Restoration, in which this movie takes place. It's time we return to Sake for one last go. At least until we find more things to talk about or decide to make a special edition episode where Brittany drinks first. We are going to try and make up for the fact our “Year of Sake” took a little more than a year to finish and give you a lot of info. So buckle up and shout Kampai as we Have a Drink (oh god, the words in this one). Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week we're digging up a classic from the archives that we released back in April 2020. The theme of the week is kanzake, which felt appropriate as a majority of our audience is now officially rolling into the winter months. If you're interested in more warm/hot sake insight, we highly encourage you to check out the special session we hosted from Sake Future Summit 2020 featuring the mission of the exceptional kanzake service team traveling France for their annual Kanzake Tour. We also did a little impromptu sake warming/sipping session for the camera back when we originally released this episode, which you can find here.Over the next few months, in addition to our regular bi-weekly programming, we'll be occasionally dropping rereleases of past episodes on topics that we haven't really discussed in a number of years and that we feel deserve a little extra bit of attention. If you missed it the first time, now's your chance to get caught up!Thanks for loving sake and shochu. Have a happy and healthy holiday season and we'll be back with more brand-new Sake On Air for you next week.Until then, Kampai! This week we're tackling arguably one of the most misunderstood segments of the sake world:Kanzake, often simply referred to as, Hot Sake. For a complex web of reasons, the quality and general nature of hot (or warm) sake is still shrouded in generations of preconception and misconception. However along with an aggressive reexamination of “Why?” in relation to lost practices in food and beverage, kanzake is in the midst of a mini-resurgence, particularly in Japan. Over the past decade, not only the number, but the level of quality and creativity entrenched in dining and drinking establishments throughout Japan has grown dramatically. Even outside of traditional Japanese cuisine or izakaya dining, some of Japan (and the world's) most lauded genre-bending restaurants have made elements of kanzake service not only a part of their beverage program, but a cornerstone to it. This week we have Justin Potts, Marie Nagata, Big Chris (Hughes) and Little Chris (Pellegrini) on the mics as we delve into kanzake history, experiences, terminology, service, and heating things up at home. For the already-converted, hopefully you'll find some hot tips (!) to add to your arsenal. For those still on the fence or for anyone that's previously been burned (!) by less-than-positive experiences, hopefully you'll find reason to set out on another expedition of the kanzake landscape.Oh, and there's a small supplement to this week's episode over on our YouTube channel, as well! Help more sake-lovers find the show by reviewing and rating us on Apple Podcasts. Let us know what you thought about this or any of our shows to questions@sakeonair.staba.jp, or say “Hi” to the team at @sakeonair on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. If you happen to undertake any kanzake experiments at home, please do share the results and photos with us! Take care out there everyone. And don't forget to Kampai! Sake On Air is made possible with the generous support of the Japan Sake & Shochu Makers Association and is broadcast from the Japan Sake & Shochu Information Center in Tokyo. The show is a co-production between Export Japan and Potts.K Productions, with audio production by Frank Walter. Our theme, “Younger Today Than Tomorrow” is composed by forSomethingNew for Sake On Air.
Ever wondered how a podcast host stays consistent, navigates challenges, and enjoys the process while not solely focusing on monetary gain? Tune in as we unlock these answers with our special guest, Gaven Sugai, host of the Kampai Sugai podcast. We kickstart our exchange with a peek into Gaven's Japanese heritage and the inspiration for his podcast's unique name. The conversation takes an intriguing turn towards cultural cheers and their interpretations, a testament to the richness of our unique backgrounds. As we venture further, the discussion illuminates the importance of consistency in the podcasting world. We share our triumphs and trials in maintaining consistency and the vital role patience plays in any creative journey. You'll get an insider's glimpse into our recording process, the hurdles we've had to jump, and how we've managed to stay the course. Our friendly banter touches on our podcast distribution platforms and why we prioritize enjoyment over monetary gain. But it's not all concentrated on podcasting. We take a detour to explore our mutual interest in mixed martial arts, the evolution of traditional martial arts into MMA, and our thoughts on heavyweight champions like Jon Jones and Francis Ngannou. As ardent football fans, we reflect on the growth of Pete Carroll and Richard Sherman and the influence their actions have had on us. So, strap in for an engaging, enlightening, and enjoyable episode packed with insights, laughter, and a whole lot of podcast geekery.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!! Welcome to another episode of the Movies on the Rocks and welcome to another HALLOWEEN SPECIAL!!! Another special where we try to, and successfully I might add, give Derryk more traume to talk about with his mental health specialist when we make him watch a horror that he would DEFINITELY not choose on his own. We discuss the Ari Aster motion picture Herediatary. Considered one of the best horror films of the last 10 years. Strangely this is the second Ari Aster movie we have done. The first was last year's special where we spoke about Midsommar. Considered a horror CLASSIC!! But give us a listen and watch the movie on your own. Welcome to another episode of the MOTR BOYZZZ!!! I know we say it every episode, but I want to be sure that everyone knows that we are here to discuss movies that we love and enjoy. Sometimes we all don't like them, but that is the best part of cinema. This one is no different. We are here to talk about the Count Of Monte Cristo. A movie that didn't do that great in the theatres but had an OUTSTANDING cast and was a real good, what I call a "POPCORN MOVIE." Where you just sit down and enjoy. So that's what we ask you, sit down and enjoy our discussion on the early 2000's motion picture. As always, we do this with a drink in our hearts and a song in our hands. KAMPAI!!!! On today's episode, we have someone who has built a restaurant empire here in Hawaii and in various places around the world. Please join me in welcoming successful restauranteur, and CEO and president of Aoki Group, Kevin Aoki! Kevin is the oldest son out of his seven brothers and sisters. Growing up, their father, Hiroaki "Rocky" Aoki, was the founder of the famous restaurant chain, Benihana. Rocky's children all were involved in the restaurant business at some point, however, Kevin was the one who carried on the tradition to becoming a restauranteur. Kevin now has established his own success as a restauranteur with restaurants such as 1938 Indochine, Herringbone Waikiki, Aoki Teppanyaki, and the very popular restaurant chain, Doraku Sushi and Izakaya. We were able to talk a lot about Kevin's life as an entrepreneur and how others can learn from his success. We got to talk about how Kevin got involved in the restaurant business, how Kevin was able to succeed as an entrepreneur after his father's passing, how he was able to bounce back from Doraku Kapolei's unfortunate delay, his love for repurposing materials into the architecture in his current restaurants, his tips on how to become a successful entrepreneur, and much more. Kevin is such an amazing person that is so down-to-Earth, and you can truly see that he loves what he does. "To make good friends with great food," was coined by Kevin's grandfather, Yunosuke Aoki, and that phrase still resides with the philosophy behind Aoki Group.HUGE mahalo to Kevin for being an outstanding guest on my podcast! Today's podcast is a monumental one for me! The Wind and The Reckoning was one of those iconic movies for me that could change the landscape of the film industry. When I first saw it, I was blown away by the performances of the actors, the amazing writing, the deeply moving story, and the artistic direction of this movie. Also, to see a mainstream film that was primarily spoken in Hawaiian, was very unheard of. The Wind and The Reckoning was a groundbreaking movie, and this was a ground-breaking podcast for me. We talked about filming during the beginning of the pandemic as the movie was filmed in Fall 2020, how the casts had to learn how to speak Hawaiian on set, how some of the shots were filmed, the reactions to meeting the survivors of Kalaupapa, the experience of filming The Wind and The Reckoning, and much more.Mahalo nui loa to David Cunningham, Jason Scott Lee, and Lindsay Watson for being phenomenal guests on my podcasts! This was such a huge blessing for me, and I'm definitely still starstruck about meeting you all.
