#41 Jordan Wylie on the Power of the Paddle, the Edge of Life, and Knowing Your Why

Salish Wolf

Jordan Wylie is not good at one thing in particular: being idle. This man does life-threatening adventure like most people go to the store. When Covid restrictions put a halt to his attempt to run 10 marathons in the 10 coldest places on the planet, Jordan rapidly switched plans to attempt to circumnavigate the United Kingdom on a stand up paddleboard. To add to the extreme level of difficulty in this quest, Jordan had to first learn to paddleboard, in less than 7 days. What may seem like pursuits of madness, for Jordan are in reality pursuits of purpose. He does not focus as much on how he is going to accomplish something as he does on why he is going to accomplish something. His “Why” for this sea voyage was a little boy in Africa who he had promised to build a school for. So his fundraising paddleboard expedition was to him not a choice but a duty. While England was in lockdown, Jordan took to the seas. Despite superhuman credentials, Jordan humbly makes it clear that he is not resistant to suffering and struggles. He details his harrowing experience with divorce that eventually led him to contemplate his final journey from a skyscraper in Dubai. The man who had once climbed Kilimanjaro barefoot and had fought off Somali pirates had nearly lost both his “why” and his will. With renewed determination, he is now trying to remove the stigma of mental illness and also to provide education for children who have few options. In my opinion, Jordan is superhero-like, and he is also remarkably human, in ways that enable him to change lives. His newest book, The Power of the Paddle, is an account of his world record-breaking paddleboard journey and will be released this fall. Our guest today is John Blanton, a successful sales executive and real estate investor. In this episode, we dig deep into the power of mindset and talk about knowing your strategy, understanding your desired outcome, and experiencing it little by little. If you want to think different, earn different, and live fulfilled, this episode is for you! Learn more about John and his journey at reiclarity.com! “What do we really want as the outcome? Not what's the input, but what's the outcome? And then how do we start working back from that?”   04:55 John grew up in a family where his father was working so much that he wasn't around most of the time. Therefore, John's goal was always to be more present in his children's lives.   He started his career in personal training and coaching in club baseball, but he didn't have the free time that he wanted, so he transitioned to sales. He started to make a lot of money, but he still wasn't satisfied with his journey. Eventually, John decided to start real estate investing so he could achieve financial freedom and have enough time with his family.   According to John, it is very important to figure out what we really want and not to just follow society's expectations. His “Why” is to live a purpose-driven, fulfilled life where he can be present with his family. “The biggest factor to defining your purpose and your “Why” is your risk tolerance.”   12:50 John recommends starting with the end goal and desired outcome in mind and then work backward from there. This will define your strategy.    Many people have financial freedom in mind when they think about their end goal. John mentions 2 paths to achieving financial freedom: Minimize your expenses significantly. Find a way to increase the velocity of your capital and grow your income.   John's advice on how to take the leap as a young investor: Networking is key. Find a way to make more money. Wholesaling or side-hustles can be a good idea. Be honest with yourself and become clear on what you truly want. Celebrate your accomplishments.   According to John, the best entrepreneurs are not necessarily the best risk-takers, but they're the ones that are the best at mitigating their risk. He was the top F-15C “Eagle” graduate in his class at the USAF Weapons Instructor Course—the Air Force version of “TOP GUN”. Cujo was asked to return as a Weapons School Instructor and subsequently became the Air Force’s subject matter expert on team accountability, something high-performance teams refer to as a “Debrief”. Cujo eventually commanded one of America’s very few operational F-22A “Raptor” squadrons. During his Air Force career, Cujo flew combat missions over Iraq, homeland defense missions in the United States, and deployed with his F-22 squadron across the Pacific. In 2014 Cujo was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. This adversity fundamentally changed his trajectory—he went from accepting a leadership position in the F-22, to retiring early and having to figure out how to provide for his family with a body that was broken. Cujo’s unexpected pivot out of the Air Force is a topic he tackles in his work with organizations looking to build resilience, develop team members with grit and the ability to overcome adversity. Cujo now teaches leaders how to embrace the tenets of high-performance teamwork in their businesses to achieve better performance, drive engagement and accomplish their missions. He has simplified and adapted the tactics, techniques and procedures high-performance teams use to help any organization win bigger and build teams that work. The notion of wealth awed him. “I’d just see these crazy things on TV and said ’I’m going to do that too,’” now CEO of Fresquez Companies, a 430-employee operation that includes airport concession, restaurant, and boxing promotion businesses. Fresquez dropped out of Valley High during his sophomore year because he didn’t feel he was learning marketable skills. Fresquez was still a teenager when he started his first business – a landscaping business – and when he started dating Linda, his future wife. She’s been the supportive-but-grounding force in his life ever since. Fresquez went on to acquire – and ultimately sell – 16 Arby’s. Today Fresquez owns many different restaurants and is also the master concessionaire at the Albuquerque International Sunport, and has contracts for airport eateries in Tulsa, Okla., and El Paso.Approached about sponsoring Albuquerque Hall of Fame boxer Danny Romero in the mid-1990s, Fresquez decided to try being a promoter. He promoted his first fight card nearly 20 years ago. He made money and got hooked.Whereas he once worked with up to 40 fighters, his main focus now is former world champion and UFC Fighter Holly Holm.Fresquez is lightening his load around the office, too. Although semi-retired he still works about 40 hours a week – well below his previous average of 80-100 – but has taken up golf and is living part-time in Maui. This episode is a special one. It was a bit of an experiment in the fact that I strapped on a couple of wireless Lav mics and ran with Dave to conduct this interview. I also believe this is the beginning of a long term friendship with Dave. Dave lives in Okotoks, Alberta ,Canada, a small city just south of Calgary. Married since 2004 to the love of his life Sharon. They have three gloriously buzzing kids Julia (11), Sam (8), and Adele (6). Dave has a busy massage therapy practice specializing in deep tissue therapy, working out from two clinics: LIV ACTIV Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation in Calgary and Diamond Valley Chiropractic & Health Centre in Black Diamond. When he's not chasing his three monkeys and treating patients, he like to run obscene distances. He is the world record holder for the furthest distance run on a treadmill in 24 hours (260.4kms), the Canadian record holder for 24hours (257.093kms), and hold numerous Canadian course records for ultramarathons. His passion for running started in his teenage years running track and cross country in school. It went further in high school when he joined a Calgary track club (Caltaf Athletic Assn.) and started competing in Decathlon. In 2006 he ran his first ultramarathon in Lethbridge and hasn't turned back since. In June of 2018 Dave will set out to break another record. He will be running across Canada in 66 days. He will average a total of 108KM per day for the entire 66 days. His "Why" is his son Sam who struggles daily with a rare disease called RECA, which makes simple movements difficult. Simply put, if he could run like his father he would never stop. Dave's goal is to raise over a million dollars for the Rare Disease Foundation. In this episode, we talk a lot about self-limiting beliefs and how to push past them. We dive into ultramarathon running strategies including body management, mind management as well as nutrition and sleep strategies. Dave talks about training both on and off the road. "Some of the best runners I know are some of the best people I know. I don't believe that is by accident." We talk about how rare disease affects 1 in 12 Canadians and the lack of strategy that exists in our current health care system. Dave shares his 6 year journey finding a diagnosis for his son and the challenges this places on families. There are so many incredible stories and nuggets of wisdom in this episode it is impossible for me to summarize them all here. Some of the things we discuss include: Nutrition Pain Management Self Limiting Beliefs Mindfulness Kindness The Power of Smiling The Rare Disease Foundation What it takes to run across Canada logistically World records Peak Performance So much more... You can find out more about Dave's journey here at Out Run Rare. His personal site at runproctor.com

About The Guest: Tom Asacker writes and teaches about radically new practices and ideas for success in times of uncertainty and change. He is the author of critically acclaimed books including "The Business of Belief," and he's the creator of "I am Keats," a philosophy focused on transformation. A popular speaker, he lectures to corporations, associations, and university audiences around the world, and works confidentially with executives and management teams at a number of top companies.   In this episode you’ll learn about    What are your “beliefs”    Cognitive dissonance.    Being driven by inspiration vs. data   Just because you choose to go one direction, doesn’t mean that you won’t have some serendipitous event that changes your course of life.  Just enjoying your journey, whether it is a journey full of struggle or journey full of success.  Tom’s work allows people to think of themselves as being in a “mental cell,” to think clearly outside that, and learn how to make better decisions.   There is a powerful misconception among people that they have on ones identity.    The process is the goal, not where you think you are going to get to in the future.   There is no linear path to success and happiness. This illusion of stability causes people to wake up when they are 40 or 50 and think to themselves, “What happened when I flipped the switch and he interviewed me?”         Logan Tyler Nelson is the creator of Scratch You Own Itch podcast, Performance Enhancement Expert, and Published author on Thrive Global. Logan graduated with. BFA In Acting from NIU. He inspires and motivates you to “Scratch Your Own Itch” so you can grow personally and professionally. Logan equips people with the tools necessary to live CREATIVE and CURIOUS lives, and leaves people better equipped to manage change effectively.     His WHY is he's a suicide survivor, and shares his powerful testimony globally. LIVE from the Net Health Event at the Private Practice Section Meeting in Chicago, Sturdy McKee joins me on this episode to discuss finding your core vales and your vision as components of business management. Sturdy is a business coach, entrepreneur and business owner who also happens to be a physical therapist and private practice owner. As a business coach and instructor, Sturdy brings the practical knowledge of owning, operating and growing businesses, combined with extensive training and learning, to clients who want to improve their business operations and achieve their personal and business goals. In this episode, we discuss: -Current challenges facing the physical therapy profession -What is a vision of meaning? -The top three qualities Sturdy looks for in job candidates -How to motivate employees with Key Performance Indicators -And so much more!   Sturdy stresses that a vision for your business should be put into practice daily in order to get your team members fully aligned behind it. He stresses, “You don’t want core values to be aspirational. You don’t want them to be things you hope for and want to do some day—They need to be actual rules you live by now.”   New physical therapy graduates are skilled in treatment and clinical judgment, however, they have had limited opportunities to develop softer skills such as communication and developing patient rapport. Sturdy advises new graduates, “You don’t go work on the strongest muscle group, you work on the stuff that isn’t.”   Coaches of athletic teams share many similarities with business leaders and many coaching tactics can be applied to business management. Most importantly, Sturdy has noted that, “[Coaches] don’t focus on the outcome, the metric, what they focus on is the process.”   For more information on Sturdy: Sturdy is a business coach, entrepreneur and business owner who also happens to be a physical therapist and private practice owner. His “Why” is to help people succeed. He has a special place in his heart for physical therapist entrepreneurs and private practice owners. As a business coach and instructor, Sturdy brings the practical knowledge of owning, operating and growing businesses, combined with extensive training and learning, to clients who want to improve their business operations and achieve their personal and business goals.   Sturdy created and taught “Clinicient University”, a 2 day business crash course for Clinicient client owners and operations executives. Attendees of this 2-day course realized an average increase in revenue of 8.9% in the first 3 months following attending with the top of the range at 22%. Sturdy has served as an EO Accelerator Mentor, helping business owners define their vision, mission and values, as well as achieve their business goals. He spent the last year building a team of business coaches at Clinicient, an EMR & Revenue Cycle Management company for physical, occupational and speech therapists.   Sturdy finds immense satisfaction in coaching and working with business owners and executives to help them achieve their business and personal goals.   Resources discussed on this show: Jim Collins: Big Hairy Audacious Goal New Zealand All Blacks Kelly Duggan LinkedIn PPS Conference Sturdy McKee LinkedIn Sturdy McKee Twitter   Thanks for listening and subscribing to the podcast!
