Spaceports should become a bigger business going forward if all goes well in the space sector and we will have ever more rockets launching from ever more locations. This is why some private companies are now getting into this market. One of them is Maritime Launch from Canada, who are developing a spaceport in Novia Scotia. My guest this week, Founder & CEO Stephen Matier, will tell us all about what it takes to build a spaceport, operate it, and much more. Enjoy! Even as baby boomers march by the millions into older age, redefining what it means to be old, we still struggle as a culture by limiting beliefs about seniors. And of all the fiction about aging, one devastating falsehood that seems to stick is that elders can't learn new things, including technology. In this episode of #thedeliciousstory, we chat with Senior Savvy's expert Abbie Richie who busts the myth that seniors can't learn tech. Abbie shares her inspiring story of helping seasoned adults everywhere frolic on the internet to connect and live productively in the new age of aging. AN ARCHAIC NOTION OF AGE It's not just our society that has trapped seniors into the confines of antiquated ideas about aging. The lie has been thousands of years in the making; perhaps ageism fallacies can be traced back far into the depths of human history. Notably, a view of aging surfaced with the Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 BCE - 322 BCE). He likened the aging brain to a wax tablet that cools with age, becoming rigid and brittle to forming new concepts. Fast forward nearly a couple of millennia to 1523, when the idiom "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" first appeared in a book about animal husbandry. The literal meaning was that it is hard (but not impossible) to train an older dog new tricks and procedures. We naturally are drawn to catchy quotes and sayings, especially if they encapsulate a grain of truth. In 1546 when the "old dog" phrase appeared in John Heywood's proverb collection, it was sold to our collective brain and has been circulating in our shared truisms lexicon ever since! The old dog principle is a perfect example of how history never wholly dies, even if we lose track of it. SENIORS CAN BE TECH-SAVVYWe are learning new things about ourselves and the world each day, no matter our age. Those who are savvy and want to age well do themselves a favor by putting in efforts to gain new knowledge with intention. Not just occasionally, but regularly. It's good for your brain to acquire new information. To resist learning simply because of the 'age excuse' is to give in to a self-defeating stereotype and promulgates the concept. Per the BBC, "The Amazing Fertility of the Older Mind," David Robson cites a study at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. For this study, participants memorized a list of items that they then compared and referenced with a table of word pairings. Adults over the age of 60 were "more reluctant to rely on their memory, preferring instead to laboriously cross-reference the two tables, even though it took significantly more time. For some reason, they weren't confident that they had learned the pairs accurately. This distrust of self has looped over into tech learning as an older adult, too. The issue proves worse likely because seniors compare their ability to learn against younger generations' second nature tech know-how.The comparison is a false paradigm, however. Younger people grew up with 21st-century technology, while older people have had to incorporate it later. After all, if you're over the age of 50, you were full-blown adulting when home computers and cell phones burgeoned in the 1980s and '90s. As Abbie points out, older people can feel lost in the language of technology not because they can't learn it, but because it seems foreign, not understanding some basics about the context of use or steps. Abbie explains that it's most helpful for older adults to start with a base of why and move on from there. Her point is to shift from a can't learn mindset to how-to learn instead. CRUSTACEANS AS FOODAs with all episodes of The Delicious Story, I asked our interesting person Abbie to share her memorable meal story. If you're a lobster lover, you'll particularly enjoy her tale.I like the idea of lobster more than the prospect of preparing it. In her telling, Abbie takes on the task of cooking lobster full-on, which you'll find heroic. The talk of lobsters launched my musings. When did humans determine these strange exoskeleton prehistoric-looking creatures of the sea were edible in the first place? Per History.com, the European settlers in North America found lobsters washed up on shore in piles. The crustaceans were so plentiful they provided a common source of protein. The abundance of Lobsters also made for great fertilizer in settler's gardens. Lobster was considered common food in many regions for centuries and did not become popular in the U.S. until the early 19th century when trapping and adequate transportation developed. By the time of WWII, lobster was considered a delicacy. YOU'RE NEW OLD BRAINThere is probably a metaphor somewhere between the subject of lobsters and older brains, and it may be about longevity. Lobsters live for a long time. The oldest one documented was nearly 100 years old, found in Novia Scotia, twice the lifespan of an average Maine lobster. Of course, older adults aren't just interested in living longer but also living well. So the benefits of continued learning are also helping keep the brain strong and cognitively active for the long haul. And when it comes to learning technology, one silver lining is that tech helps keep us connected. Hopefully, as more people are vaccinated, and COVID infection rates go down, we won't need to rely on our Zoom and Facetime for contacting friends and family. But it's good to know we have the options and know-how to use tech tools just the same. Technology isn't going away even if you can manage to avoid using it. No matter your age, you can learn, and the adventure of being a lifetime student is finding the path that helps you best incorporate new information. Just because we age doesn't mean we're ready to be pushed by the wayside in the world. All learning –and learning technology in particular –assures we will remain vital and relevant even as we grow older.
"So fill to me the parting glass... Goodnight and joy be to you all." A popular toast at the end of an evening or a heartfelt farewell to a departed or deceased person? The Parting Glass has become synonymous with leaving. It was written in Scotland and has criss crossed the Irish Sea becoming a popular song among Celtic peoples around the world. Folk singer Karine Polwart talks of its fragile beauty as a song that can be a rousing drinking song at the end of the night but equally a poignant farewell at a funeral. For Alaskan Fire Chief Benjamin Fleagle there was no more fitting song to honour his mentor and colleague at his Fire Department when he passed away over a decade ago. The song still brings out raw emotion in him. Alissa McCulloch 'clung' to the song when she heard the Irish singer Hozier sing a version of it at the start of the pandemic in March 2020. At the time Alissa was seriously mentally unwell at home in Australia and was admitted to hospital where she listened to the song over and over finding comfort in its timeless beauty. After Canada's worst mass shooting in its history Pete MacDonald and his sisters recorded an acapella version of the song as a musical tribute to those who lost their lives. It's a tradition in Novia Scotia to sing in the kitchen at parties, wakes and celebrations and they wanted to pay their respects to the dead. The Irish singer Finbar Furey has performed the song with his band the Fureys and talks about its appeal not only in Scotland and Ireland but throughout the Scots-Irish diaspora. "But since it falls unto my lot That I should rise And you should not I'll gently rise and softly call Goodnight and joy be to you all" Producer for BBC Audio in Bristol: Maggie Ayre Song versions: Karine Polwart Hozier Finbar Furey The High Kings The MacDonalds
It stands to reason that if an alien craft can transverse a vacuum, it should be able to handle an underwater jaunt with ease. So when an object crashed into Shag Harbor off of Novia Scotia in the Autumn of 1967 leaving behind in its wake a yellowish foam and a search effort which including the military which yielded no wreckage, Canada had all the pieces for its very own crashed saucer mystery.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/cosmicsponge)

In this episode I speak with Mercedes Peters.with Mercedes Peters. She is a Mi'kmaw history Ph.d student at UBC. We talk about the current situation in Saulnierville in Digby County in Novia Scotia. Mi'kmaw fishers established a lobster fishery with 350 traps, smaller than commercial fishing, to provide for their families and community. Settler fishers have been assaulting and harassing Mi'kmaw fishers. This is part of a longer history of Mi'kmaw assertions of self-determination. We discuss the Burnt Church crisis which occurred twenty years ago revolving the same issues. We discuss the conservation argument of settlers, the department of fisheries and Oceans, and the correct framework to understand the situation. I have provided a link to donate money to the fishers to replace their equipment that was broken by settlers. I would like to thank Mercedes for talking to me. Thank you for listening. This sounds very much like a story out of today’s entertainment magazines – but this tale of unrequited love took place in the 1880’s. Sometimes the paranormal takes place on military bases. (The Military And The Mysterious) *** The corpse of a murderer winds up doing advertising for a drug store. (The Murder of Maggie Walker) *** In 1922, an otherwise unremarkable farmhouse in Novia Scotia was the site of alleged poltergeist activity which made headlines all over Canada and the United States. Thinking about buying Matterport? Here's the journey for a Matterport Newbie
Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com A Harley-Davidson cam upgrade on your engine can provide more power for certain RPM ranges, which is completely dependent on what style aftermarket cam you purchase. A more extreme cam can also make your bike run in a way that's not optimal for your type of riding. A cam upgrade after the original purchase of your Harley from a dealership will also likely void your factory and/or extended engine warranty. Additionally, cams and installs can get rather costly. So, many considerations need to be made before you make a decision to upgrade your Harley cam. Note: We are not experts on Harley cam upgrades, but we are simply trying to relate general and basic knowledge to help the average everyday biker out there. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE With so many aftermarket Harley cams available and so much improper information in the spam filled online Harley forums, we wanted to record this podcast episode to help the average everyday biker out there decide and navigate through the smoke and mirrors, as to help all make an educated decision on whether or not to upgrade the cam on a Harley. We break it down Law Abiding Biker style! I had Oscar & Big Daddy on the mics with me and they are both well versed in Harley cam upgrades. Don't worry, listen in and you'll see we break it down and don't get overly technical on this subject-just what you need to know. By installing a cam upgrade on your Harley, you can increase horsepower or torque by essentially changing your valve timing. You'll be letting the exhaust out and fuel/air in at very specific times. By changing this timing, you can increase maximum torque in different ranges, such as low or high. It's all about the "grind" of your cam and that can get really technical. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Why doesn't Harley use better stock cams? A stock cam in your Harley provides a safe range and tries to do everything "okay" through all the ranges and it's EPA compliant. You'll see nothing great at the low or high end, but the bike will start well and run well for the average everyday rider out there. And, let's not forget that a very large portion of Harley-Davidson's income is from selling performance aftermarket parts and charging high labor rates to install such parts. They'd lose much money if they put a better stock cam in the motor at the factory. Question to ask yourself: Before a cam upgrade on your Harley, you'll want to ask yourself-what model of Harley engine do you have and what kind of riding do you do? Maybe you're riding a bagger with a passenger and you want low-end torque to take off quicker up to a certain RPM? Or, maybe you'll choose more of a horsepower cam and would like horsepower to kick in at a higher mid-range RPM, so when you roll the throttle to pass a car it's there for you? Check out awesome motorcycle tutorial videos here! You'll also want to decide if you want a regular or high lift cam. With a high lift cam, you'll need to have a modified high flow head. You'll have to have polished intake and exhaust ports or even have the ports made bigger (ported). You'll have to replace things like stronger valve springs and larger valves and so on. This can get in depth and expensive quick. An aftermarket cam for your Harley can push your valves up farther or keep them open longer, creating different levels of torque and/or horsepower. A high lift cam will push the valve deeper into the cylinder and keep it open longer. A high lift cam will likely give your engine that "loping" sound at idle as you often hear in muscle cars. Basically, a low-end cam is about improving torque, while a high lift cam is about horsepower. You'll want to decide if you want a chain or gear driven cam. For more information on that subject, you'll want to listen to Podcast Episode #73. Your stock Harley cam is chain driven out of the factory. Generally speaking, gear driven cams for Harley are a bit more reliable long-term. Gear driven cams do whine a bit over the stock chain driven cams. Gear driven cam kits are a bit more expensive than chain and a little more is involved on the install as you'll have to measure crank run out with a dial gauge and make sure the cam is still true etc. What are the Harley stage kits? Harley basically has four different stage kits, such as stage one, stage two & so on. Basically, those kits are put together by Harley and the parts included in the kits work well together. By getting a Harley stage kit you don't have to spend a bunch of time researching and piecing things out. As the stage kits get higher in number the more parts and labor are involved. But, higher number stage kits are well beyond just getting a new cam. A stage one kit is basic air intake and exhaust all the way up to stage 4, which will be a large project such as air intake, exhaust, larger pistons, cam and more. This is a basic explanation and you should reference a Harley dealership or the HD website to get all the specifics for each stage kit. Other awesome aftermarket comparable stage kit: You should also consider the Vance & Hines 30+ Horspower Kit, which is an all-inclusive kit. We like this kit so much we brought it right to the Law Abiding Biker Store. The kit comes with the following items. - Oversized 450 Slip-ons (chrome or black) with Carbon Fiber End Caps (exclusive to 30+ HP Kit) - Carbon Fiber VO2 Air Intake Kit - Fuelpak FP3 with Raceshop Mapping - Power Dual Head Pipes (chrome or black) - 575 Camshaft Set - Adjustable Pushrods - Vance & Hines Inscribed black Timing Cover Check out the V&H 30+ Horsepower Kit & further details in Our Store Picking a Cam: Most reputable Harley cam manufacturers will have all the specifications for a particular grind cam listed on their website. You can look at things such as-what RPM range the cam is for? So, make sure you do a little research to make sure you're getting what you want. Understand, that with many basic shallow ramp or "mild" cams you can just install the cam and pushrods and be good to go. That is likely as far as an average everyday Harley rider needs to go. Getting into more aggressive high lift cams will add many additional issues and associated costs and may not be necessary. But, it's your bike, money, and time, so equip your Harley how you choose. You'll also want to consider a "bolt in" cam for ease of installation. These bolt-in cams fit right in with ease. The cam doesn't actually bolt-in, but that is just a phrase that means no other mods will be needed for fiment. Note: A cam upgrade for a Harley is the best bang for your buck to improve the performance of your Harley from stock. Tuning your Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) after a cam install: You'll need to re-map your EFI with a good quality aftermarket tuner after a cam install. We recommend the Vance & Hines FuelPak 3, which we use and sell in our store. You can tell V&H techs what cam and kit you installed and they can send a map to your smartphone that you can then upload into the FuelPak 3 and then flash your bike's ECM. Tip: Before buying an upgraded cam for your Harley, call your EFI tuner manufacturer and make sure they either have or will create a map for you. You may also consult your cam manufacturer and see if they have an EFI map. Check out Podcast Episode #34 for a ton of great information on EFI tuners for Harley.
