They were shit. I hate them. They're two hairy blokes from Liverpool playing electric nonsense.' And his wife says: 'No, this is a hit.' And the next week we met Tony and he said: 'You are the future of pop music!' He totally changed his mind. And we said: "We're not fucking pop. We're experimental.'"I nya "Hemma hos Strage" pratar OMD om sitt 14:e album "Bauhaus staircase", om hur regissören John Hughes fick dem att skriva "If you leave" eftersom han ändrat slutet på sin nya film "Pretty in pink", om Kraftwerks spelning på Liverpool Empire 1975 (dit Paul inte fick gå för sin mamma), om kärleken till Oskar Schlemmer och abstrakt 1900-talskonst, om skivbolaget som sa att de var tvungna att välja om de ville vara Karlheinz Stockhausen eller Abba (varpå de svarade "Why can't we be both?") och om att spela förband till Depeche Mode på den legendariska Rose Bowl-konserten i Pasadena 1988.

Andy McCluskey is a vocalist, bassist, songwriter, and one half of English electronic duo Orchestal Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD). The band rose to fame with the single 'Enola Gay' (1980) and took another step with their third album Architecture & Morality (1981). After a few commercially less successful albums (ones that are appreciated much more these days), other half of the duo Paul Humphreys left in 1989, leaving McCluskey as the sole remaining member of OMD, before disbanding in 1996. OMD got back together in 2006 and have since released four new albums to a resurging fanbase. The latest is 'Bauhaus Staircase' (2023), and we spoke with McCluskey about the album, the two stints of the band, writing hits like 'Enola Gay', political songs, doing everything with energy, the value of art, and a lot more! Interview by: Robin HignellSupport the showThank you for listening! In this episode, I speak with Andy McCluskey, lead vocalist of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, or OMD, as they are more commonly known. Andy formed OMD with co-writer and occasional co-vocalist, Paul Humphreys, at the tail-end of the 1970s. Their self-titled debut album (and its follow-up) was released in 1980 at the dawn of electronic pop, just as synthesised sounds were easing their way into the mainstream - and this is where our story begins. We begin by looking back at Andy's interests in art and design that saw him creating the first posters for OMD (see below), his ongoing creative relationship with legendary sleeve designer, Peter Saville, and follow the story right up to today with the brand new album, Bauhaus Staircase, released the same day as this podcast - Friday 27 October 2023. The new album references the Bauhaus art movement in its title, and its sleeve design is naturally complementary, but it is not the first OMD album with connections to art and design. So, join Andy and myself as we connect the dots, and along the way reveal that during this journey of more than four decades, OMD may actually have sailed those seven seas and finally come full circle... If you liked this episode, you may also enjoy the conversation I had with John Petch about his design work for OMD's 13th album 'The Punishment of Luxury'. Check out episode 6 of Art on your sleeve. In the 70s, the teenage years of Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys, one would have heard new music by word of mouth, from the music papers, and DJs like John Peel, and it is one of these channels that would have led the young Andy McCluskey in September 1975 to see Kraftwerk play at the Liverpool Empire. It's lazy to suggest that Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark were entirely influenced by Kraftwerk – both founder members were keen music lovers and had performed together in a band called The Id – but their debut single Electricity wears that influence  on its sleeve. There were some classic synthpop albums released in in 1980 and 1981 but in terms of maturity and sophistication, none came close to ‘Architecture and Morality', OMD's third album. McCluskey & Humphreys always did things there own way: "We kind of did songwriting in reverse. A lot of songwriters sit at the piano and hash out a melody and the chords first. With us, we start with a soundscape and crazy noises and quite often the song will land on top. We then realised we had a knack for a catchy tune".   OMD arguably took a wrong turn with their fourth album 'Dazzle Ships', released in 1983."We forgot to sugar coat the experiment. The album shipped Gold and returned Platinum, more copies were sent back than sold. It did scare us that it wasn't commercially successful. Even though our songs always start as experiments, we were conscious to keep it more commercial in order to rescue our career".  But even that record became a classic, eventually. Some 33 years on, in 2016, OMD played a triumphant show at London's Royal Albert Hall performing both Architecture and Morality and then Dazzle Ships back-to-back. That experience gave the band a new lease of life. 2017's ‘The Punishment Of Luxury' can arguably be confidently placed in the top three albums OMD had released to date. Almost forty years after they first got together, a band that was still adding to its finest work. The band's forthcoming album, ‘Bauhaus Staircase' bodes well for their late blooming fifth decade and extended longevity. This, despite McCluskey's wisdom suggesting otherwise.  "It's usually dangerous and stupid to make a new album unless you are really going to invest in it. People tell us we're iconic and influential, so we don't want to fuck it up by making a shit album".The band can rest easy. After 45 years working in their own unique way, they and their fans find OMD on a roll. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Paul has truly done it all, from studying politics to starting his own recruitment agency, to heading up jobs at Sky and Amazon, and finally settling on a prestigious position at J.P. Morgan. In our conversation, we discuss the pros and cons of working for a global company with larger resources, what cohort hiring is, and why it's such a big focus for Paul, as well as what he believes the standard industry practice should be when dishing out application rejections.  Key Points From This Episode:   Paul Humphrey details his career trajectory from studying politics to working for J.P.Morgan. What appealed to Paul about working for J.P. Morgan despite having no experience in finance. What he is responsible for within the company. The pros and cons of working for a global company with resources versus a startup. What cohort hiring is and why it's currently number one on Paul's agenda. Paul's intentions for the future of recruitment within J.P.Morgan. Why hiring managers should be educated to screen candidacy in, rather than screening out. The opportunity for internal mobility at J.P. Morgan and how they look at both the internal and external market. The process by which existing J.P. Morgan employees are considered for other roles. Where Paul feels the firm could improve in terms of recruitment. Which kinds of mobility are the most and least common within J.P. Morgan. Why Paul believes that giving detailed and honest feedback when a candidate's application is rejected should be standard industry practice.   Tweetables: “As a recruiter, what's always been the most interesting part of the career is trying to wrap my head around, firstly, technology, and then secondly, the business, and to understand how technology is valuable to that business and the role that it plays.” — Paul Humphreys [0:07:27]   “Speed is important in talent acquisition. The speed with which you can bring a candidate through a process [and] the speed with which you can respond to your client's needs.” — Paul Humphreys [0:11:29]   “There is no such thing as a bad candidate. It's about matching candidates with your requirements and also the reverse, whether your opportunity matches what a candidate is looking for.” — Paul Humphreys [0:16:16]   “Our role as recruiters is to try and ask challenging questions to the clients and make sure that they're really assessing internal and external candidates in a similar way.” — Paul Humphreys [0:21:48]   “To shift that focus away from one-off interactions with candidates to a more open and constructive dialogue, that would be a great achievement.” — Paul Humphreys [0:29:23]   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:   Talk Talent to Me Paul Humphreys on LinkedIn J.P. African American poet and author Hughes narrated this work based on his book "The First Book of Rhymes.” The “documentary sounds” were field recordings used to underscore the poetry. 5:08 Steve Hackett, “Jacuzzi” from Defector (1980 Charisma). Solo album from guitarist for Genesis. This is a track of largely keyboard-like sounds featuring such instruments as the Matell Optigan and Roland GR500 Guitar Synthesizer, played by Hackett. Bass, Dik Cadbury; Concert Flute, Alto Flute, John Hackett; and keyboards by Nick Magnus. 4:37 Pedro Morquecho, “Mi Corazon Es Un Violin (Fox)” from Pedro Morquecho (Su Novacord Y Su Orquesta) (1965 Orfeon). Mexican keyboard artist who found his groove with the amazing Hammond Novachord. Here he plays some numbers for the night life, popular favorites designated for different kinds of dances, such as Afro-Beguine, Fox, and Rhumba. 3:33 Enoch Light And The Light Brigade, “Swamp-Fire” from Dimension •3• (1964 Command). This is one of the many amazing instrumental albums produced by Enoch Light for Command in the sixties. In this case, we have Dick Hyman on organ, Tony Mottola on guitar and Alto Saxophone by Walt Levinsky. I also hear an uncredited appearance by an Ondioline, a monophonic organ known to be used by Enoch Light on many albums. 2:19 Akira Itoh, “Life from the Light 光からの生命” from Inner Light Of Life / やすらぎを、君に (1978 King Records). Alto Saxophone, Flute, Vocals – Noboru Kimura; Electric Bass – Keiju Ishikawa; Electric Guitar, Vocals – Nobuo Hajime; Piano, Vocals – Kenji Kijo; Synthesizer – Akira Ito; Vocals – Goko Kunikida. Ito was previously a member of the Far East Family Band (see earlier track). 6:53 Alain Markusfeld, “1st movement” from Contemporus (1979 Egg). French singer and songwriter. Composed by, arranged By, ARP Polyphonic, ARP Prosoloist, Acoustic Piano, electric guitar, Organ, Percussion, Cymbals, Triangle, Marimbas, Harmonica, Handclaps, Vocals – Alain Markusfeld; vocals Patricia Markusfeld. 3:06 Masquerade, “Guardian Angel” from Masquerade ‎– Guardian Angel (1983 Metronome). PPG Waveterm synthesizer, Chris Evans. I don't know much about this group, other than this song and it was basically one person playing the instruments, the short-lived PPG Wave synthesizer, also used by Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, among others. 4:27 Bruno Menny, “Orbite Autour De La Planète 3” from Cosmographie (1972 Arion). This is unique album from the engineer who was also a student of composer Iannis Xenakis. This is his only album. It is a blend of concrete and synthesized sounds. 19:12 Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, “Maid Of Orleans (The Waltz Joan Of Arc)” from Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (1981 Dindisc). A 7-inch single. Bass, Guitar, Horns, Mellotron, Organ, Percussion (Acoustic, Electronic), rhythm program, Synthesizer, Vocals, Andrew McCluskey; Drums, Percussion (Acoustic, Electronic), Synthesizer Bass, Malcolm Holmes; Mellotron, Melodica, Organ, Percussion (Acoustic, Electronic), Piano, rhythm program, Synthesizer, Vocals, Paul Humphreys; Organ, Piano, Synthesizer, Michael Douglas. 4:12 Harold L. O'Neal Jr. (producer), “Ultimate Obstacle (All Tests Simultaneously)” from RCOA Stereo Systems Test Record (1972 Yorkshire Records). Test record using electronic sounds and tone clusters, bursts. “The Ultimate High-Fidelity Test Record.” 2:04 Karlheinz Stockhausen, “Mikrophonie I” (1964), first part, from Mikrophonie I & II / Prozession (1969 CBS). From France comes this boxed set. Electronics (Filters), Hugh Davies, Jaap Spek, Karlheinz Stockhausen; Electronics (Microphone) – Harald Boje*, Johannes G. Fritsch; Percussion (Tam-tam), Alfred Alings, Aloys Kontarsky. Mikrophonie I for Tamtam, Two Microphones, Two Filters and Potentiometers Essentially, a piece for cardboard tubes scraped on cymbals and mixed with electronic amplification and reverberation. Hugh Davies worked with Stockhausen during this period. Recorded at West German Radio Studios, Cologne, December 17 & 18, 1965. 7:24 Donna Summer, “Grand Illusion” from The Wanderer (1980 Geffen). Words and vocals by Donna Summer; Music by Giorgio Moroder; Synthesizers, Harold Faltermeyer, Sylvester Levay; Guitar, Jeff Baxter, Steve Lukather, Tim May; Drums, Percussion, Keith Forsey; Bass Guitar, John Pierce, Lee Sklar, Les Hurdle. 3:50 Ruth White, David White, Gary Maynard, Animals Are Wonderful (1982 Tom Thumb Records). Synthesizers, Ruth White. Yes, that's the Ruth White of sixties Moog Modular fame. She also made her way with children's activity records such as this. 2:16   Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. For additional notes, please see my blog Noise and Notations.

In the 1980's, OMD drove their electronica sound straight into the charts and the clubs. Classics like Electricity and Enola Gay remain on the goto playlists for legions of fans. The band was founded by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys in Liverpool, England, in 1978. I had the pleasure of touring with OMD in 2019, on my last tour mixing The B-52's. Shock World Service 096: I Didn't Want The Night To End (Cian Ó Cíobháin) 19/10/2020 Galway, Ireland 1. Phil Lynott - One Wish (Demo with Huey Lewis) Phil Lynott's friendship with Huey Lewis dated back to the mid-70s and this extraordinary demo, one of the last songs Lynott wrote, was never officially released. 2. John Cale - Dying On The Vine The eternally creative John Cale recorded this around the same time that Lynott collaborated with Lewis on the previous track. 3. OMD - Souvenir Possibly the most beautiful song in the entire OMD catalogue features the band's keyboard player Paul Humphreys on vocals. 4. Karen Marks - Cold Café Wistful new wave track from Melbourne from '81. 5. Clannad - Theme From Harry's Game Regularly played on the radio in the 80s, I had almost forgotten about it until I happened upon a Twitter thread admiring it no end. 6. Lani Hall - Never Say Never Again From an unofficial Bond movie from '83, I've always had a soft spot for the title track, sung by Lani Hall, who was married to Herb Alpert and briefly fronted Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66. 7. Sparks - I Want To Hold Your Hand Stunning cover from 1976 of The Beatles standard which was introduced to me by Barry Murphy of The Last Sound. 8. Chris Clark - How About You Chris Clark is one of a very small number of white performers who recorded on Motown during the 60s. 9. Love - My Little Red Book I first heard this when composer Burt Bacharach performed it at Galway Arts Festival in 2019. Next morning, I was on the hunt and discovered a number of covers, including this one from 1965 from the mighty Love. 10. BEAK> - Yatton From one of Geoff Barrow's post-Portishead Bristol bands. 11. De Ambassade - Geen Genade Like the previous track, this Dutch song has the spirit of 1980s new wave all over it, though it came out in 2016. 12. Turquoise Days - Grey Skies Astonishing synth-pop classic from ‘84 from a duo based in Jersey on the Channel Islands, who released a number of cassettes in the 80s. 13. Ariel Pink - Stray Here With You Only a genius like Ariel Pink would have an unreleased pop gem like this in his locker. It surfaced last year on his ‘Oddities Sodomies Vol 2' compilation of previously unreleased tracks. 14. Toasted Heretic - Another Day, Another Riot I've been after a good quality version of this track for ages - one of Toasted Heretic's greatest moments, which will forever remind me of moving to Galway. I was thrilled when Neil Farrell, who used to record with the band (and also records as The Melancholy Thug), gifted me with a high quality version a few months ago. Indeed, I borrowed from the lyrics to give this podcast its title. 15. Jan St. Werner - VS Cancelled Jan St. Werner of Mouse On Mars collaborated with The Fall's Mark E Smith as Von Südenfed. This track features Smith reading an email from Domino detailing why the band had been dropped by the label. 16. The Fall - Paint Work The Fall's 8th studio LP ‘This Nation's Saving Grace' is a masterpiece and this ramshackle track is one of its defining moments. 17. Billy Fury - I'm Lost Without You This track almost sounds like a blueprint for the music of early Tindersticks. Indeed, Morrissey was also a huge fan of this 60s Scouse singer. 18. The Kinks - I Go To Sleep (Demo) We kicked off with a demo and so we'll part with one. Written by Ray Davies, it was never formally recorded by The Kinks, but has been covered many times since. https://cianociobhain.com/ https://www.rte.ie/rnag/

Tesla Girls (Razormaid! Mix) - OMD 15. Reap The Wild Wind (Extended Version) - Ultravox Notes and other random things: Starting off this podcast is a song that may not be familiar to non-Depeche Mode fans - or about four of you. The phrase itself is notable for its connection to Pearl Harbor. The word "tora" literally means tiger in Japanese, though in a WWII context it is radio code for "totsugeki raigeki", meaning lightning attack. In a Depeche Mode, context, however, the song is also notable as it is one of only two Martin Gore-penned songs appearing on the band's debut: Speak & Spell. (the other was the instrumental track, Big Muff). As most of you probably know, Vince Clarke, who later went on to form Yaz and Erasure, was an original member of DM and its primary songwriter before leaving the group shortly after the release of their first record. Gore would take over songwriting duties after that. Tora! Tora! Tora!, while not one of the most well-known or provocative songs in the DM catalog, provides a tantalizing, albeit brief, glimpse into the mind of Martin Gore and all that was to come. As a side note, a live version of Tora! Tora! Tora! appears on the 12" version of the song "Get The Balance Right". It was the first live track to appear on any DM single. A limited edition version of GTBR contained several more live tracks, making it the first DM single to appear in a limited edition format. Speaking of Vince Clarke and Erasure, the second song in this 'cast, "Brother & Sister" is, in my humble opinion the best track on the band's Wild! album, which dropped in 1989, and perhaps one of their best tracks, period. Considered one of the stronger Erasure albums from stem to stern by many fans, Wild! is enigmatic in the sense that, for whatever reason, it didn't strike a chord with American audiences. Coming immediately on the heels of The Innocents from only a year earlier, an album which contained the massive hits "Chains Of Love" and "A Little Respect" one would think that the next album would have more appeal stateside. Yet, not even great songs like "Drama!, "Star" or "Blue Savannah", (#4, #11, #3 respectively in the UK) sniffed the American singles charts. The band wouldn't see the American charts again until the release of "Chorus" in 1991. On another side note, it was around that time that I got to meet Andy Bell. It was at a hotel bar in downtown Fort Worth, Texas after a concert. While I didn't attend the concert, I had a friend who worked at the hotel tip me off that Andy would be in the bar area sometime after the show. Three other friends and I piled into our car and headed for the hotel. When we arrived, there was a rather large throng of people waiting outside, hoping to get in to catch a glimpse of the band. We showed up well after the fact, walked right in the front entrance and took a seat at a table in the bar area. Nobody even inquired whether or not we had a room at the hotel (we didn't). About 15-20 minutes later, Andy and a couple members of his entourage took a seat at a table near us. We mumbled among ourselves, starstruck as ever. It took about another 15 minutes for us to get enough courage to walk over and ask for an autograph. As we were the only other people in the bar, he kindly obliged. We didn't linger or ask a bunch of questions. We simply said how much we loved Erasure's music and thanked him for the autograph. Then we returned to our table. He appeared exhausted from the show and I think he truly appreciated the fact we didn't press the issue. While many stateside think of Re-Flex as a one-hit wonder thanks to their international smash, "The Politics Of Dancing", the fact is the band had five other singles chart in various countries around the world, including the track "Hurt", which appears here. Reaching #82 in the US back in 1983, the song is largely forgotten or overlooked by all but die-hard fans at this point in time, but it's a fantastic pop gem by any standard and deserves to be heard. Re-Flex were formed in the early 1980s by musicians Baxter on vocals and guitar and Paul Fishman on keyboards and backing vocals, and included Francois Craig on bass, and two successive drummers, Phil Gould and Mark King, both of Level 42 fame. Following King's exit, Roland Vaughn Kerridge took over on drums and later, after Craig’s departure, Thomas Dolby introduced ex-Gloria Mundi bass player Nigel Ross-Scott to the band, thus completing Re-Flex's final and perhaps best-known line-up. Though the group stopped working together in 1987, they have never officially split up. If you are a fan, it might interest you to know that in 2010, Re-Flex band members released a 6 CD box set entitled 'Re-Fuse'. The set includes a re-mastered version of their debut album, The Politics of Dancing, and five CDs of other previously unreleased material. One of those five discs is their sophomore effort called Humanication which, somewhat ironically, was shelved by EMI before its release as it was deemed ... wait for it ... too political. And speaking of pop perfection, OMD's "Tesla Girls" would have to qualify. Though it's one of the definitive club tracks in the band's catalog, Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys found it exceptionally difficult to come up with a version that they knew to be "right". At the time, the band's confidence had bottomed-out after the release of their fourth album, Dazzle Ships, and the group struggled to produce new music they felt was up to their lofty standards. Inspired by Yugoslavian-born scientist Nikola Tesla, who developed the alternating current, and armed with a title suggested to the group by musician Martha Ladly, "Tesla Girls" went through endless revisions and multiple adaptations during umpteen recording sessions for their fifth album, Junk Culture. Even after creating what would become the album version of the song, McCluskey recorded two new versions and even attempted to remix the original studio recording before admitting defeat and signing off on the version we've all come to love ... except for "Kids In America" singer Kim Wilde, who called the tune "inane and monotonous". Still, in 1984 the track reached #21 in the UK and has become a classic. By the way, the "No, No, No" vocal sample was done by Maureen Humphreys, Paul's wife at the time. Last, but never least, you may be wondering about the title 5-8-6 by New Order. The song was originally conceived out of Factory Records' head, Tony Wilson, requesting "twenty minutes of pap" from the band. From that directive was borne a 23-minute instrumental titled "Video 5-8-6". The song contained many elements that would surface in various songs on NO's debut album, Power, Corruption and Lies, including their best-selling club hit, "Blue Monday". The song would eventually be distilled down to the vocal version of the song most fans are familiar with. Bassist Peter Hook has stated that the title comes from the bar structure found in the track "Ecstasy". The track went on to chart at #86 on the British Singles Chart and #19 on the British Indie Chart. It also went on to become a classic among classics in the New Order catalog. Welp, another episode in the books. I'll be back with another soon. Thanks for listening!
