DTFF: The Volunteer Firefighter Podcast - Down To Fight Fire
E261 - New Traditions, Fire Truck Dedications and WildLand Task Force Leader Debrief This week welcome Scott back to the studio and get an update on the Wild Land Task Force Leader course he recently took. Todd tells us about a new tradition his department is starting where they dedicate new apparatus to past fire fighters. One in particular was dedicated to Todds father, who spent 53 years of service in Osoyoos. WHO WE ARE As a group of Rural Volunteer Firefighters, our Fire Department has built our firefighter training from both old and new tactics in the fire service and adapted them to fit the realities of equipment, manpower, and costs around what our community requires. WHAT WE DO We create video, audio and written word content to share these training and tactics methods with our Brothers and Sisters in our extended fire families, and to showcase to those that may be interested in becoming firefighters the fun you can have and the amazing skills and abilities you get to learn, whilst keeping the lives of the people around you safe! WHY WE SHARE Firefighters are problem solvers whose role requires them to be on their best day whilst others are having their worst day, and while we do not claim to be perfect we are willing to put our lives on the line to try. It's during the trying that we continue to develop the mindset, tactics, and training that allow us to be effective, safe and successful where it's needed the most, and by sharing our experiences we hope that it may help other Fire Departments in creating what works for them to help bring everyone home safe. Noelle Starzynski, wine marketer extraordinaire, joins me on the podcast this week. She is perhaps best known for her work with Lakeside Cellars in Osoyoos, BC where she has been working for the past 5 years helping to build their brand and hospitality program. I first met Noelle in the middle of the last decade and we have been running into each other at various events and stores ever since. We didn't see much of each other during the pandemic of course. Events started back up just as I was getting this podcast started last year but was only recently able to follow through on her threat to make an appearance on it, which happened right before I was to set off to Ontario a couple of weeks ago. It's a fun conversation filled with mystery wines (including a Ferox Merlot from Virgil, Ontario) and excitement. We had lots of things to talk about. A joint venture between Canada's Vincor and France's Groupe Taillan, Osoyoos Larose is a traditional Bordeaux house in the Okanagan. The vineyard near Osoyoos is planted entirely to Bordeaux red varieties, with merlot the largest planting. The winemaker, with training and experience in Bordeaux, blends only two wines. Le Grand Vin is the red built for long cellaring in the Bordeaux tradition. In 2005, a typical vintage, the blend was merlot (67 percent), cabernet sauvignon (23 percent), cabernet franc (four percent), petit verdot (four percent) and malbec (two percent). The wine was barrel-aged 18 months (60 percent new barrels) and bottle-aged four months prior to release. The winery's second wine, Pétales d'Osoyoos, was launched in 2007 (starting with the 2004 vintage). This is a red designed for more immediate consumption, and is becoming a major part of the program.

Do you ever wonder what it's really like to be an influencer and to be chasing likes? What really goes on behind the scenes? My guest Carlee Krtolica is a Calgary mom of 2 girls, a blogger, content creator, social media influencer at Styled to Sparkle, and the author of the book Chasing Likes. She is also a freelance interior designer and a sommelier with her WSET (Wine and Spirit Education Trust) Level 2 Certification. Her blog and social media are a direct reflection of her daily life with her family, home projects, outdoor adventures, global travel, fine food, wine, and spirits and so much more. Carlee wants to share what makes her life easier in the hopes that it will make your life easier too! Listen in as we talk about: Chasing likes. Carlee gets real about her experience and success as an influencer. Knowing your limits. Carlee gives us insight into how she ‘does it all', and it comes with knowing when, and what, to outsource. Following your passions. When our passion runs deep within us, that's when we know we're living in our purpose. Carlee shares how she continues to follow her passions in her business and tapping into her wildest dreams by writing a book. Living in the ‘pinch me' moments. You know those moments in life when it almost feels surreal to have the opportunities you have? Carlee gives us insight into her favourite Connect with Carlee: Instagram: @styledtosparkle https://www.instagram.com/styledtosparkle/ Facebook: @styledtosparkle https://www.facebook.com/styledtosparkle/ Website: https://www.styledtosparkle.com Blog Post: Carlee's nursery for her second daughter Blog Post: Carlee's kitchen Book: Chasing Likes by Carlee Krtolica CHASING LIKES Are you thinking about being an influencer? Carlee asks, “Are you sure you want to do this?”. Being an influencer is a lot more work than you might think. There are many decisions to make about the content you are going to create in terms of what you want to share, how much you want to share, and how authentic you want to be. You need to really think about why you would want to get into this space. It might seem like you just snap some photos and get some free stuff but that is not how it works these days. KNOWING YOUR LIMITS “Not everything you see is real. Give yourself some grace and ask for help.” On social media, it can appear that people have it all together, that they, themselves, are ‘doing it all', and that their lives are perfect – almost too good to be true. Carlee gives us insight into how she ‘does it all', and it comes with knowing when, and what, to outsource. She shares how important it is to know our limits, so that we have the time and energy to pour back into the things we love during the day; like spending time with our loved ones, working on projects that bring us joy, and filling up our own cup. Carlee reminds us that there is no shame in asking for help to live a life that feels balanced. She shares two of her favourite ways to make her life easier: Instacart: Instacart is a grocery delivery company. This saves Carlee a trip to the grocery store and having to pack up her young girls. Sprout Society: Sprout Society is a Calgary based company that has a great variety of pre-made plant based meals that Carlee can have on hand in the fridge or freezer. Her family loves them! WINE RECOMMENDATIONS Carlee loves and knows a lot about wine! She shares some of her favourites. Mission Hill Perpetua Chardonnay: Mission Hill is located in West Kelowna, British Columbia. Carlee recommends pairing this wine with popcorn topped with butter, truffle oil, and parmesan cheese. Blue Mountain Pinot Noir: Blue Mountain is located in Okanagan Falls, British Columbia. Nk'Mip Cellars Merlot: Nk'Mip Cellars an Indigenous owned winery located in Osoyoos, British Columbia. Carlee loves enjoying this wine with steak. Hello Someday Crossroads Red Blend: Hello Someday is owned by a Calgary Couple,

Dean Torrence and partner Jan Berry were a couple of California boys who produced many hits together. Dean credits Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys for arranging and writing many of their songs. They pioneered the surfing sound with the 1963 Wilson-penned hit Surf City. It went to the top of the charts that year, and paved the way for all that followed. They continued their association with Wilson until 1966 to great success. You can hear Jan and Dean singing on the Beach Boys' Barbara Ann, an improvised live version that wasn't supposed to be released. Jan was partially paralyzed in a car accident in Beverly Hills in 1966. He was in a coma for two months. I greatly admired both: Dean for standing by his friend on stage and Jan for the courage to continue touring. Dean was a talented graphic artist who created album covers for the Beach Boys, the Ventures, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Nilsson and many others. I booked them for The Legends Of Rock'n'Roll at Expo 86 (where we recorded this interview) and I worked with them at again at Music ‘91. They were great friends and they even allowed me to sing some of their hits with them on stage in Osoyoos that year. They also appeared at the PNE later that summer. I talked many times with Dean after the passing of his buddy Jan in 2004. You'll want to check out Dean's book Surf City: The Jan and Dean Story at amazon.com. In this segment, Dean talks about the future, enjoying being a performer and the business of music.

In this segment, Dean covers working with Brian Wilson, his interest in graphics, Jan's accident and the movie "Dead Man's Curve".
In this segment, Dean sets the scene: the beach at Malibu, the impact of surf music and the early days.
It's the speed of the industry that John Skinner notices most when remarking on changes in mining and finance. On Friday Skinner was a guest on Kitco Roundtable podcast with correspondent Paul Harris and mining audiences manager, Michael McCrae.Skinner has been in and out of the resource sector since starting his career in the mid ‘80s at Yorkton Securities."The thing I've noticed since I was in the industry is just how different and how much faster everything happens because of social media. You used to have to wait for a newspaper to come out. The rumor mill happens and it's instant. It's faster. It's more ferocious and due diligence is that much faster," said Skinner. "I'm really excited for guys in the industry."Success in the industry led him to pursue another passion: wine. In early 2004 he purchased land in Osoyoos and started Painted Rock Winery. He recently returned to the industry with the general lift in resources. Skinnner is independent director at Meridian Mining, which is focused on projects in Brazil.Skinner also noticed how the slow years in the resource sector between '08 and '15 led to a talent gap.“There's a certain age group in the 2008 to 2015 window. [People] weren't coming into the industry,” said Skinner. “But now…it's attracting people. It's attractive again, and it feels like the market is on.”Kicto Roundtable also reprised its video with Danielle DiMartino Booth. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield briefly surged above 1.6% on Thursday.Until the Federal Reserve declares an intervention to bring down the long-end of the curve, equities markets could see continued "nervousness" said Danielle DiMartino Booth, CEO of Quill Intelligence.

After a great trip, compliments of Wines of British Columbia (http://www.winebc.com), I give my impression on what the Okanagan Valley is & what it has to offer. You may not like all I say, but it's an honest look at the good and bad of the region! First, we provide a thanks to the great people who were part of the trip: Laura Kittmer of Wines of BC, Lori Pike-Raffan and Blair Baldwin of the Okanagan Wine Festivals Society, Kyle Taylor from Sun Peaks, Arnette Stricker of @RTWGirl and Stefanie Michaels, @AdventureGirl We review the brief history of Okanagan wine, which began in earnest in 1990. We talk about the grapes available here from Merlot (most widely planted grape), and Pinot Noir to Pinot Gris (second most widely planted grape), Chardonnay, and Riesling Climate and geography are next -- we talk about the desert conditions of South Okanagan and why dry conditions, lakes, and latitude make such a difference to the wines here We get into the nuts and bolts -- the sub regions and what each grows and specializes in, discussing the importance of exposure and location and what that means for wine styles. Osoyoos/Black Sage and Oliver are the regions I mention as being high potential, along with the Similkameen Valley, west of Osoyoos and similar to the area. After a bunch of facts, I give my opinion on what the region is and where it may be going (which some of you may not like, but those are the breaks!) Thanks again to all who made the trip possible. I'll be coming again to see the south part of the region, but I appreciate the overview and the amazing hospitality, kindness, and meticulous planning but the Wines of British Columbia and the folks at the Okanagan Winter Wine Festival. Go to http://www.winebc.com for more information!

This broadcast explores the english print media coverage in Canada throughout 2007 on the controversies surrounding genetically engineered foods. Why has Canada become such a willing host to GE foods whereas throughout most of the world, bans, moratoriums and watchful eyes keep genetically modified organisms off grocery store shelves? Host Jon Steinman looks to provide one answer by deconstructing some of the confusing language that the Canadian public is receiving from some of the most vocal and published proponents of GE foods. The Kootenay region of BC for one has become a hotbed of media debates on the topic as it's NDP Agriculture Critic Alex Atamanenko who represents the riding in Ottawa. Atamanenko is at the forefront of politically challenging the presence of genetically engineered foods in Canada. The broadcast also launches a segment on the creation of regions free of genetically-engineered crops. In November 2007, Deconstructing Dinner recorded the first meeting of residents and politicians who began strategizing around the launch of a campaign to create a GE-Free Kootenays. This segment continues into next week's broadcast. Voices Marc Loiselle, Communications and Research Director - Saskatchewan Organic Directorate's OAPF (Vonda, SK) - Marc farms on a century old family farm. The Loiselle Organic Family Farm grows cereal, oilseed, pulse, clover and hay crops. They raise chickens, goats and cattle. Marc has worked with certified organic and biodynamic practices for 22 years. Marc is one of a few farmers in Canada growing Red Fife Wheat. Mischa Popoff, isitorganic.ca (Osoyoos, BC) - Mischa was an organic inspector until 2003. In an interview with The Western Producer, Popoff questioned the integrity of the organic sector, following which, he had trouble finding work in the industry. Popoff was a nominee in the 2007 federal Conservative Party candidacy for the BC Southern Interior riding. Alex Atamanenko, MP BC Southern Interior / NDP Agriculture Critic, "New Democratic Party of Canada" (Ottawa, ON / Castlegar, BC) - Elected the Member of Parliament for British Columbia Southern Interior in 2006. Alex is the critic for Agriculture and Agri-Food and the Canadian Wheat Board. Atamanenko was born in New Westminster, and was educated at the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto. Lorne Hepworth, President, CropLife Canada (Toronto, ON) - CropLife Canada is the trade association representing the manufacturers, developers and distributors of plant science innovations — pest control products and plant biotechnology — for use in agriculture, urban and public health settings. and... Participants at the November 10, 2007 GE-Free Kootenays meeting held in Nelson, BC
If you were told, that organic farmers are giving up growing organic crops, would you be concerned? Organic standards prohibit the presence of genetically engineered organisms within a harvest, but since outcrossing between plants is unavoidable in nature, genetically engineered canola is so easily crossing with non-GE varieties being grown organically, that these crops are unable to be certified as organic. Monsanto has long been at the forefront of controversy around genetically engineered plants, and most notably, when their hired hands began trespassing onto farmers properties, taking samples, and then accusing farmers of stealing their technologies. One farmer who has now become world-renowned for his defiance of such actions, was Percy Schmeiser, whose field of non-genetically engineered canola became the unwilling host to Monsanto's patented GE variety known as Roundup Ready Canola. It was this case, that eventually set the precedent that a company can indeed own the lifeforms (the plants) that inadvertently make their way onto a farmers field. But if a company maintains ownership of the seed and hence the plant, then should that company maintain responsibility for the damages that their property causes? The Saskatchewan Organic Directorate has since 2002 been seeking compensation for the damages caused by the property owned by the American-based Monsanto and Germany's Bayer. A class action lawsuit was chosen, as the issues raised by the two plaintiffs are no different than those faced by any organic farmer operating in Canada. In May 2005, the lower court in Saskatchewan denied the group such class action status, and subsequent appeals were also denied in May 2007 and then again in December 2007 by the Supreme Court of Canada. This exhausted all legal avenues for such a case. But while the denial of acquiring such status is a blow to the farmers, it's far from being the end to their fight. Guests Sean Gardner, Vice President & General Manager - Monsanto Canada Inc. (Winnipeg, MB) - Monsanto's Canadian operations are part of the larger, global Monsanto company headquartered in St. Louis, MO. The company produces canola, corn and soybean seed products, and a range of herbicides most often found under the brand name - Roundup. Sean has been with the Canadian operation since 2005 and in his current position since August 2006. He previously worked as Monsanto's country lead for the Mediterranean area comprised of Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Sean joined Monsanto in 1998 when the company acquired PBI Cambridge. Prior to joining Monsanto, Sean worked at Unilever. Arnold Taylor, President - Saskatchewan Organic Directorate (SOD) (Kenaston, SK) - Since 1991, SOD has acted as an umbrella organization for organic producers, certifiers and processors. They are the SK chapter of the Canadian Organic Growers. The organization maintains a membership of 600-700. Arnold operates Taylor Organic Farms with his son. The 3,000 acre farm has been certified organic since 1992. Arnold is the President of the Canadian Organic Growers and the Chair of the Organic Federation of Canada. He is also the chair of SOD's Organic Agriculture Protection Fund Committee. Marc Loiselle, Communications and Research Director - Saskatchewan Organic Directorate's OAPF (Vonda, SK) - Marc farms on a century old family farm. Other Voices Denise Dewar, ex Executive Vice-President Plant Biotechnology - CropLife Canada (Toronto, ON) - CropLife Canada is the trade association representing the manufacturers, developers and distributors of plant science innovations — pest control products and plant biotechnology — for use in agriculture, urban and public health settings. Denise is now in the same position for CropLife International.
