Nuestro tiempo pasa día a día. ¿Cuál es mi objetivo? ¿Cuál es mi propósito? ¿Cuál es la razón por la que vivo todos los días? ¿Qué podemos hacer? ¿Qué debemos hacer? Queríamos saber qué sentíamos sobre el tiempo y la vida, lo que hemos perdido y encontrado, y las preguntas y respuestas que descubrimos durante nuestros tiempos buenos y difíciles. Vivimos con una promesa que no ha cambiado desde que éramos niños”.

Joey and Venny sat down with Grégoire, the frontman of the mighty Thot. They talked about Pelagic Records, collaborations and why he reads every review about the band. Also, we talk about them making their debut at Arctangent festival this summer.
Wanna hear an interview that I loved and hated at the same time? The conversation with Mirza from Arms and Sleepers was awesome. Deep and personal, funny and entertaining, technical and detailed. We talked a lot about Mirza's latest record What Tomorrow Brings (out since March 1st via Pelagic Records) and how it is a reflection of his life and all the tragic things he encountered ever since leaving his home in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He has been playing shows as Arms and Sleepers for years now and has also been to the Ukraine in war times twice, once during the first Russian attack on Crimea, ten years ago, and also after the second attack that is still going on. Of course that experience also influenced his song writing and will do so in the future. Why I hated the interview? Because my connection broke down all the time, chopped up a lot of interesting thoughts and resulted in this only being an audio-interview. Nevertheless, this conversation is one of the most interesting I was allowed to do this year, so I hope you enjoy it despite the technical difficulties.
Prolific and proficient! That's surely something one can say about Robin Staps, his band The Ocean and his label Pelagic Records. We have not only reviewed a lot of records out via Pelagic Records (for example the latest releases by Saver, Arabrot, Mono, Jaye Jayle or JeGong), no Simon has also reviewed the last The Ocean record Holocene (you can check out his review here). But one thing that we must also know about Robin is that he is a man with a lot of interests and as it is always interesting to be interested we were really happy to interview him and kickstart our Xmas-to-New Year-interview marathon! Yes, we are back with our annual interview marathon here on the VeilofSound - and of course you will get one interview over the next couple of days ending with a bang on January 1! But not only the end should be a bang but basically each and every interview and thus we are happy to give you this first interview with Robin from the Ocean who also runs Pelagic Records. Robin and us talked about ten records that shaped his musical taste and journey and he has come up with many interesting choices, some obvious, some surprising, but all making sense! Afterwards we talk a lot about the Ocean, the band's development, the upcoming record (yes, UPCOMING) and the way that the band has also added to Robin travelling the world and much, much more. Enjoy the interview and make sure to check back daily to get the latest interview. But for now - we are happy to kickstart this year's marathon with Robin Staps!
Over the last couple of years, we have witnessed many great new Doom bands. But rarely has one hit as hard as Belgian-based BRIQUEVILLE which has by now released several records through Pelagic Records. They might be the slowest, doomiest band on the roster, but they're surely one of the most intriguing, densest and simultaneously most refined, most intricate bands in all of Europe. As we are always interested in presenting you something different and unique we are more than happy to give you a premiere - this is the first interview the band has ever done that's not written! However, we of course kept the anonymity of the band member we spoke to. We touched on the new record, the development of their sound and who is under the hoods, there's one answer that'll surprise you, for sure! Enjoy!

Sometimes the world gets away from you and you have to pack two months of podcast into one episode. So whether your mood swings to the raucous sound of LO! and their new album The Gleaners or the more trepidatious approach of The Ocean and their latest Holocene (both coincidentally on Pelagic Records) Buke and the 9C staff have you covered with what is sure to be a conversation composed of many, many, MANY words. I mean, it's over three hours long - I'm assuming this is because of the amount of words being spoken but I supposed it could be something else: maybe there's some bird calls? Joey and Venny (Devin Townsend) had the pleasure to sit and chat with Robin Staps from The Ocean. The three got to discuss the new album 'Holocene', which is out on the 19th of May on Pelagic Records. They explore the band's progression into more synth on the new album, as well as the contribution by the incredible vocalist Karin Park. Listen out for Robin's tips on albums to look out for in 2023.
Interview by Kris PetersAussie blackened sludge purveyors of metal Lo!have today released their fourth studio album The Gleaners, an album which looks set to further solidify the band's growing reputation following the critically acclaimed 2017 album Vestigial.A sonic blast of intensity dispersed over nine visceral anthems, The Gleaning captures Lo! at their breathtaking best and details a further descent into the unknown that is guided by the forces of nature.Vocalist Sam Dillon sat down with HEAVY this week to discuss the new album and the process of bringing it to life."This is a proud moment for us," he acknowledged on the release of The Gleaners. "A lot of work and research has gone into this album following up from 2017s Vestigial. We've had Pelagic Records back in our team looking after us and it's been a dream. This is probably some of the most experimental and expansive work that we've ever done."Experimental and expansive are both cool words when it comes to music, so we push Dillon to go into more detail."We wanted to be able to be cinematic, theatrical and have those anthemic choruses that we're known for amongst the sludge genre," he explained, "but we also wanted to push and stimulate things that are important to us. We didn't want to just release another album that was the same as its predecessor. We wanted to be able to keep the same groove but expand and make it interesting for ourselves. As long as we're being genuine to ourselves and what we enjoy about creating extreme music, then we know that we've done our best and hopefully fans will get on board as well."In the full interview, Sam talks more about the musical side of The Gleaning, the musical and lyrical theme that runs through it, experimenting with cinematic landscapes, how Lo! have grown over the course of four albums, blending hardcore, black metal and sludge metal together and getting the balance right, live shows and more.

It is always a pleasure to talk with Scandinavian acts, because most of them are very humble and easy to talk to, even if they are really important in their own little scene. Talking to Niklas Åström, the drummer behind ef, Sweden's elegant powerhouse of sparkling post-rock with a lot of glittering appeal, just confirmed that, because even though he might be aware that his band is a point of reference nowadays, he never shows it. Thence, this interview was nothing but a pure pleasure! Whenever listening to any ef-record it becomes quite clear that the guys have a knack for writing catchy melodies without sacrificing their classiness or elegance for it. That can also be said about the new one We Salute You, You and You!, coming up on Friday, November 4 via Pelagic Records. You will all be amazed by the record and its diversity. Niklas talked to us about that new record, the effect Covid had on the band (you will be surprised!), their roots in a quite different musical genre and why he prefers AC/DC over Busta Rhymes! Enjoy!

There have been many musical highlights this year, varying from blistering mid-covid live shows to the superb post-covid album releases. The underground music scene has had to stay strong and battle through a tough eighteen months, that tested both the creative abilities of the bands as well as the financial viability of it all. Thankfully most have ploughed through these hard times, and we are now reaping the rewards with some incredibly original and diverse albums releases. One such album is Shy, Low's latest offering, Snake Behind The Sun which is due for release on 08-10-2021 through the mighty Pelagic Records. I'm not going to go all “review” on it here as the album write up is already available on our website if you wanna sample the fruits of their labour. And let me add, no fruit was spared in the making of this colossal release.
No doubt you know how this works by now...team members take turns picking their favorite album from a given month and for July 2021, Cat (Hera) yelled the loudest over Year Of No Light's Consolamentum (Pelagic Records). And, based on their heavy history, no one on staff disagreed. Since 2001, Year Of No Light have been churning out some of the heaviest post-metal by way of sludge, doom, and drone anywhere and this release finds them at their most vulnerable yet heaviest of the bunch in their discography. It's been said that any band choosing to go the instrumental route better have plenty of meat to make a statement and this band has the whole damn cow on the grill. The gang covers Consolamentum and how it stacks up to their past while standing completely on its own, comparisons to like minded bands and how Year Of No Light are 100% unique, how Hera's virtual Roadburn experience colored this pick as well as how this one fits in her spiritual tear as of late and the color she sees when listening to the album, new homes for certain staff, the relentless heat, branching out with different genres of music due to the pandemic, whether to move to the West Coast or not, Egypt and our resident Egyptologist, and, as always, what else tripped our triggers during the month of July 2021. So, do have a pen and paper on hand. All this and so much more as we dive head first into our seventh AOTM for 2021! So jump in and get an earful!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
Metal Interview de CROWN représenté par Stéphane Azam et David Husser pour parler de "The End of All Things" attendu le 16 avril 2021 via Pelagic Records. ▬ About Crown ▬ The End Of All Things is for C R O W N what Kid A was for Radiohead: an album that nobody was expecting from them. Dark and moody; bleak and sublime; airy and crushing; mesmerizing and engrossing; bold yet unerring; strident, danceable and suffocating, all at the same time. An album oozing with tasteful, fragile hooklines flirting with the abyss they are hovering above, encapsulated within an ingenious major production, provided by one half of C R O W N himself: David Husser has worked as a sound engineer, producer and musician all across the globe with artists like Alan Wilder o f Depeche Mode or at Peter Gabriel's Real World studio, and has toured with his industrial band Y Front alongside Rammstein in the 90s. Paul Kendall (Mute Records, NIN, Nick Cave) said about David: "a distorting diamond... we have collaborated on a number of projects and I have been amazed by his ability to teach an old dog new tricks. He is simply the best recording engineer I have ever met". The other half of C R O W N is founding father and vocalist Stéphane Azam, who has worked as live sound engineer for French blackgaze pioneers Alcest for years. Stéphane's low, soothing voice on The End Of All Things comes as a complete surprise to anyone familiar with the band's previous 2 records, which featured mostly screamed vocals – a fact showcasing the immense versatility of the musicians at work here. Furthermore, In contrary to previous efforts, there are (almost) no vocal guest appearances on The End Of All Things – 'almost', because Karin Parks of Årabrot lends her beautiful voice to closing track Utopia. David pushed Stéphane from the start of the writing and recording process to do all the vocals himself, for the sake of coherence: he wanted the band and the album to have one single "captain of the vessel. Stéph sings with a very low voice now, and it was a challenge to make space for that sound- and production -wise, we had to find some kind of relief in the low register. It took us pretty long to find what we consider the right recipe to make it work", Husser explains. Crown started out in 2011 as 2 men and a drum machine, and their debut album instantly got them an invitation to the prestigious Roadburn festival in 2013, and a record deal with Candlelight. The duo's early sound was defined by hissing electronics, soaring heavy guitars and the absence of "real" drums, touching on industrial metal acts like Godflesh, Ministry or Killing Joke. The End Of All Things is clearly a departure from that sound in almost every imaginable way. "Life is change, its the only thing we can always expect", says Husser. "It's the same with music. I personally feel offended when a band just regurgitates their own ideas and delivers a copy of the previous album, over and again... I want to take risks and let myself in for adventures and ventures nto new territories, otherwise it wouldn't be art anymore". The End Of All Things'is a seminal album, which could well turn into a new 'Shape Of Heavy Music To Come'. Get involved. "A nihilistic listening experience" – The Quietus ▬ TRACKLIST▬ 1. Violence 2. After releasing one of the best albums of 2020 - Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic / Cenozoic - as the pandemic brought touring to a standstill, The Ocean's Robin Staps spent his unexpected spare time at home writing the follow up. He also spent lockdown in Berlin growing his label, Pelagic Records, and his planning to take the label's live show, Pelagic Fest, to Norway and Holland. As well as looking ahead to a future that WILL include the tour with pg.lost, Hypno5e and Svalbard - even if it needs bumped to 2022 - Robin also looks back over four appearances at Damnation, from the "intense" fourth stage in 2010 to headlining the Eyesore Merch Stage eight years later. And yes, THAT balcony dive that almost resulted in the festival being halted by venue management in 2015! Luisifer talks to Gabbo Dubko, vocalist and bassist of Implore (grindcore) and ClearxCut (vegan straight edge hardcore). During this episode they discuss growing up in Buenos Aires, how his nu metal roots influenced his taste in music, his passion for his grandmothers food, touring multiple times with Acxdc, releasing the first 7" with Power It Up, thinking bigger picture with Pelagic Records, Century Media, making a happy living tattooing at Born To Loose Tattoo, and forming a heartfelt friendship with the current lineup of Implore.
Episode 55 of The Nine Circles Audio Thing is all about the Album of the Month for September which is Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic by Germany's post metal/progressive metal juggernauts The Ocean which is available now on Metal Blade Records and Pelagic Records. Buke once again captains the episode joined by Vince, Ian, Angela, Hera (Cat), and Jon! The pick this month was a mere suggestion from Corey which grew legs to become an all in team pick. And, it's easy to see why, this is The Ocean's 10th full length and they've yet to do anything less than EPIC. Ian puts his college learning to good use in explaining the history and timeline while Hera dives deep into themes and tie ins to Phan 1. Vince loves the concept but...prog...so, he is mixed on everything except the one track that features a strong black metal backbone. Go figure. Jon, Angela and Buke enjoyed it for what it is, another stellar entry into a major catalog from a truly amazing band. One thing is for sure, this just might be the deepest dive into an album we've done since the beginning of these album of the month picks. Plus, car alarms from possible dinosaurs roaming the streets? All that and a "what else drove our boats" in September along with August since we missed that episode. But, pay close attention to the Steve Von Till section which was slated as the August pick from Josh but work and life didn't cooperate in time for it to flesh out. And, a heartwarming tribute to Power Trip's Riley Gale. At nearly 2-1/2 hours, this episode is chock full of stuff to keep you thinking of history, progressive metal and a whole host of albums to explore. So jump in and get an earful! 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

Drifting deep into our UK roots on many drinks, Emil dedicates an entire episode to two unheralded pioneers that got lost in the initial flurry of British invasion-isms. Caravan hid behind the shadow of Pink Floyd without ever truly stepping out into the larger public's mind. Kaleidoscope also burst off that initial spark of Syd's imagination into their own obtuse world and then faded away into obscurity. Today the first ever record under Emil's name was announced. If you are into the RARE SOUNDTRACKS episodes, check out his new album FILMMUSIK, which was made in that same dark, paranoid mold. It comes out June 2nd on Pelagic Records in Berlin. Alright, so this week we talk about Nile. We do a balls deep segment on them. Also, we talk about some weekly stuff too. Alestorm's hilarious trolling with their 50 euro edition of their upcoming album, Disillusion's Patreon campaign, Suicide Silence complaining about their album not being well received, Pelagic Records (in general), and metal youtubers, namely Rob Scallon, Ten Second Songs, Paschalis Theotokis and RichaadEB. Oh, also there's a new Mastodon song too.
Meta-title! How metal of me to be very meta on a metal podcast that's also pretty meta. This week we have a bunch of news. Either new releases, singles, teasers or whatever from: Inanimate Existence, Darkthrone, Wardruna, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Sinsaenum, Lamb of God, Voivod, Shokran, Dark Tranquillity, Thy Catafalque, Fit for An Autopsy, The Agonist, Disillusion, Exotype, Native Construct and Serpentine Dominion. Also an analysis of how global metal is, Pelagic Records's starter kit, and a top 10 list of bands from Norway. While on the topic of top 10 lists, we do an impromptu "Top 10 songs that have the desired effect every time". Or as Eden calls it, "Evergreen songs" or something. Whatever. Then we have our bullshit philosophy corner on Hegelian dialectics and the early metal scene! Finally, we talk about No Man's Sky in the cool people section. Whew!
