Dean's Chat host, Drs. Jeffrey Jensen and Johanna Richey, are joined by leadership of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, Ms. Kathy Kreiter, CEO, and President, Michelle Butterworth, DPM, FACFAS. Join us for a fun discussion highlinght Board Certification in foot and ankle surgery! This Dean's Chat episode is sponsored by Bako Diagnostics! An overview of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS) from their website: "ABFAS safeguards public health and well-being by certifying and continuously assessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of podiatric surgeons to ensure excellence in surgical care. Our Core Purpose is to promote the health and well-being of the public. Our Values - Excellence: Embracing innovation, continuous improvement, and adaptability. Integrity: Upholding fairness and transparency in all our actions. Quality: Committing to high standards and trustworthiness. Service: Dedicated to serving the profession and the public. Recognizing the need for a surgical specialty board within the field of podiatry, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) approved the creation of the National Board of Podiatric Surgery. Today, that board is called the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery® (ABFAS). The primary function of ABFAS is to certify qualified foot and ankle surgeons. Initially, we offered a single certification in foot and ankle surgery. Today, ABFAS offers board certification in foot surgery or foot and reconstructive rearfoot/ankle (RRA) surgery. Prior to achieving ABFAS Board Certification, candidates must become ABFAS Board Qualified in Foot Surgery or ABFAS Board Qualified in Foot and RRA Surgery. To become ABFAS Board Qualified, DPMs must complete a three-year residency program and pass ABFAS Part I Board Qualification Exams (or the equivalent Final-year In-training Exams). Once board qualified (or "board eligible"), candidates must pass the rigorous Case Review process to achieve ABFAS Board Certification. ABFAS board-certified surgeons, called ABFAS Diplomates, engage in a process of continuous learning to remain certified through the LEAD Continuous Certification Program." https://www.abfas.org/about-us https://bakodx.com/ https://bmef.org/ www.explorepodmed.org https://podiatrist2be.com/ https://higherlearninghub.com/

Dean's Chat hosts, Doctors Jeffrey Jensen and Johanna Richey, are joined by a legendary podiatric physician, Dr. Allen Jacobs. Join us for a trip down memory lane in podiatric medicine; from early residency training at Kern/Civic Hospital to opening up hospitals for podiatric privileges in St. Louis, to training residents for 4 decades. Dr. Jacobs is a true icon in our profession! Dr. Jacobs highlights the value of personal interactions in healthcare by sharing stories from his own practice. He recounted instances where simple gestures, such as bringing a patient their favorite breakfast or giving them roses after surgery, made a significant impact on the patient's experience and healing process. These acts of kindness and personalization not only enhanced the patient's satisfaction but also contributed to their overall well-being and recovery. Despite the increasing trend towards corporatization and reliance on AI in healthcare, Dr. Jacobs stressed the irreplaceable role of human connection in patient care. He expressed concerns about the potential loss of personal touch and empathy in modern medicine, where patients may feel like commodities in a system focused on efficiency and automation. Dr. Jacobs emphasized the importance of taking the time to sit down, listen, and engage with patients on a personal level, as these small gestures can have a profound impact on their perception of care and the healing process. Dr. Jacobs is a 1973 Summa Cum Laude graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine. He completed his residency in surgery at Monsignor Clement Kern Hospital for special surgery in Warren, Michigan in 1975. Dr. Jacobs is in private practice in St. Louis, Missouri. He is board-certified in reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Reflecting on the stories and experiences shared by seasoned podiatrists like Dr. Jacobs, helps current and future podiatrists gain insights into the importance of building strong doctor-patient relationships, providing personalized care, and maintaining empathy and compassion in their practice. These historical anecdotes serve as valuable lessons that can guide podiatrists in navigating the evolving healthcare landscape while prioritizing patient-centered care and human connection. https://explorepodmed.org/ Dean's Chat Website Dean's Chat Episodes Dean's Chat Blog Why Podiatric Medicine? Dean's Chat is providing bonus episodes interviewing students from the Schools and Colleges of Podiatric Medicine. This week we are joined by three students from the Arizona College of Podiatric Medicine (AZCPM); Stephen Facer, Elijah Goeglein, and Remi Drake. Stephen and Elijah are representing the Class of 2025, Remi is representing the Class of 2026. All represent the American Podiatric Medical Students Association (APMSA) within AZCPM. Join our discussion on the podiatric journey our students are embarking on at the various schools. Students share their path on discovering podiatric medicine, to applying to what is now eleven schools and colleges of podiatric medicine, to the first and second year of didactics, Boards Part 1 and 2, and clinical experiences and opportunities. We discuss the research opportunities at the Arizona College of Podiatric Medicine, including the Student Initiated Research Scholarships in 1) Podiatric Surgery, 2) Biomechanics and Sports Medicine, 3) Innovations in Podiatric Medicine, 4) Diabetic Foot Care, and 5) Wound Care. Enjoy the discussion with future leaders in our great profession! The students discuss how the first two years of the podiatry program at the Arizona College of Podiatric Medicine are challenging. However, they also mention that by getting involved and connecting with others, students will discover more enjoyable times and opportunities beyond these initial two years. The students emphasize the significance of building connections and meeting different people, as it can open doors and lead to opportunities in the field of podiatry. Stephen shares his perspective on getting connected with classmates, finding study partners, and making friends to socialize with after class. He emphasizes the importance of involvement in the class and at the school, mentioning the amazing faculty and opportunities such as APMSA (American Podiatric Medical Students' Association) and various clubs. He believes that solely burying oneself in books and focusing solely on the curriculum for the first two years is not the best approach. Instead, he suggests that by engaging with others and getting involved, students will have a more enjoyable time, meet different people, and have doors open for them in terms of opportunities after the initial two years. Eli, another student, echoes this sentiment, stating that students should be prepared to work hard as the curriculum is intense but also a lot of fun. He highlights the small class size in podiatry, which fosters a close-knit and supportive community. Dr. Jensen and the students discuss the transformative opportunities that medicine can provide to make life-changing differences in people's lives. Dr. Jensen emphasizes that prospective students should carefully consider if this is the right field for them. He highlights the profound impact they can have on someone's life by diagnosing and helping them with their condition. Dr. Jensen stresses the importance of understanding the potential impact students can make and suggests that prospective students should thoroughly explore what medicine can offer in terms of positively impacting others. Overall, the episode emphasizes the transformative potential of medicine and encourages prospective students to consider if they have a genuine interest in making life-changing differences in people's lives. https://www.midwestern.edu/glendale-az-campus-catalog/arizona-college-of-podiatric-medicine Dean's Chat Website Dean's Chat Episodes Dean's Chat Blog Why Podiatric Medicine? Dean's Chat host, Dr. Jeffrey Jensen, is joined by Dr. Lee Rogers and Dr. Gina Painter highlighting the American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM) and the Board Certification Process. Dr. Rogers is the current President of ABPM and Dr. Gina Painter is a Past President and current Chair of the Examination Committee. They discuss the significance of Board Certification and the exam requirements to attain Board Certification. They discuss the pathway to Board Certification with ABPM, the Certificates of Added Qualification (CAQ), and particularly the controversial CAQ in Podiatric Surgery. The CAQ in Podiatric Surgery is a voluntary step beyond Board Certification that recognizes knowledge, expertise, and experience in the subspecialty of podiatric surgery. Dr. Jensen, Dr. Rogers, and Dr. Painter also discuss fellowships, legal issues new practitioners must be aware of when signing their first contract, and….ABPM's goal to roll out one certifying board for all podiatric physicians. Dr. Jensen, Dr. Rogers, and Dr. Painter emphasize that getting involved and taking on leadership roles can bring about the desired changes within the profession. They also highlight the availability of mentorship and coaching programs that can aid in the development of leadership skills. By taking chances, exploring different areas of podiatry, and seeking guidance, individuals can become influential leaders who make a significant difference in people's lives, their community, and the profession as a whole. In the episode, the doctors discuss the significance of finding a mentor for professional development. They stress the value of having someone with more experience and knowledge guide and support individuals in their chosen field. Additionally, they suggest engaging in fellowship discussions with fellowship directors and doctors who have completed fellowships, as this can greatly contribute to professional growth and development. Dr. Jensen, Dr. Rogers, and Dr. Painter encourage students to take risks and explore various opportunities as a means of learning and personal growth. They believe that hands-on experience and trying new things are the most effective ways to learn. This further underscores the importance of having a mentor who can provide guidance and support throughout these experiences. They also address the need for improved pathways for reentry into board certification for individuals who have taken time off. Dr. Jensen, Dr. Rogers, and Dr. Painter highlight the challenges faced by many individuals, as not being certified can hinder meeting certain requirements, such as diversity or numerical quotas. The speakers specifically mention the impact of taking time off for family-related reasons, which can result in losing momentum and delaying the achievement of board certification. They note that, unlike MDs and DOs, podiatrists lack a clear pathway for reentry into the board certification process. Additionally, they mention existing programs across the country that allow MDs and DOs to undergo skills evaluation and regain hospital privileges after taking time off from their primary practice. They express a desire to see similar programs implemented for podiatrists, aiming to improve the pathway for reentry into board certification. Enjoy this discussion with two leaders in the profession challenging the status quo. Dean's Chat Website Dean's Chat Episodes Dean's Chat Blog Why Podiatric Medicine? Become a Podiatric Physician

From Dr. De Luca: "I consider it to be a great honor to participate in the well being of my patients. My goal is to provide quality foot care to all my patients, in a caring environment.
