Breht speaks with veteran organizer, revolutionary strategist, and author Eric Mann. In this wide-ranging conversation, Mann reflects on his decades of struggle; from his early work with SNCC and SDS, through his involvement with the Weather Underground and his time as a political prisoner, to his rank-and-file organizing as a UAW autoworker. Along the way, Mann wrestles with the realities of repression and counterinsurgency, the need for disciplined cadre and a Black-led united front against imperialism, and the history of the Marxist Left in the 60's and 70's in the USA as told through his personal experiences. His story is both a living history of the U.S. Left and a revolutionary call for commitment and organization for a new generation of revolutionaries. More Biography of Eric Mann: Eric Mann (born December 4, 1942) is a civil rights, anti-war, labor, and environmental organizer. He has worked with the Congress of Racial Equality, Newark Community Union Project, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), the Black Panther Party, the United Automobile Workers (including eight years on auto assembly lines) and the New Directions Movement. He was also active as a leader of SDS faction the Weathermen, which later became the militant left-wing organization Weather Underground. He was arrested in September 1969 for participation in a direct action against the Harvard Center for International Affairs and sentenced to two years in prison on charges of conspiracy to commit murder after two bullets were fired through a window of the Cambridge police headquarters on November 8, 1969. He was instrumental in the movement that helped to keep a General Motors assembly plant in Van Nuys, California open for ten years. Mann has been credited for helping to shape the environmental justice movement in the U.S. He founded the Labor/Community Strategy Center in Los Angeles, California and has been its director for 25 years. In addition, Mann is founder and co-chair of the Bus Riders Union, which sued the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority for what it called “transit racism”, resulting in a precedent-setting civil rights lawsuit, Labor Community Strategy Center et al. v. MTA. Mann is the author of books published by Beacon Press, Harper & Row and the University of California, which include Taking on General Motors; The Seven Components of Transformative Organizing Theory; and Playbook for Progressives: 16 Qualities of the Successful Organizer. He is known for his theory of transformative organizing and leadership of political movements and is acknowledged by many as an veteran organizer on the communist left. ---------------------------------------------------- Support Rev Left and get access to bonus episodes: www.patreon.com/revleftradio Make a one-time donation to Rev Left at BuyMeACoffee.com/revleftradio Follow, Subscribe, & Learn more about Rev Left Radio https://revleftradio.com/

When we first read Suchitra Vijayan's reporting on the media in India we were shocked to learn that much of the press in the world's largest democracy, had fallen in line with Narendra Modi's authoritarian agenda. Now it feels like a portent of what could happen in the United States. In India today, 75% or more of news organizations are now owned by 4 or 5 large corporations, all led by allies of Modi. In contrast, journalists who have dared criticize the government have been harassed, detained, imprisoned, and even murdered. Suchitra Vijayan is a journalist and attorney. She is the author of two books: How Long Can the Moon be Caged? Voices of Indian Poltiical Prisoners, co-authored with Francesca Recchia, and Midnight's Borders. Vijayan is also the founder and executive director of the Polis Project, a journalism and research organization focused on authoritarianism and state oppression. She was born and raised in Madras, also known as Chennai, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, and lives in New York City. Read Vijayan's reporting in The Nation about the government's targeting of Kashmir's free press.Follow Suchitra Vijayan on Substack. This episode was originally published in November 2023.  Music in this episode by Siddhartha Corsus and Blue Dot Sessions ABOUT THE SHOW The Making Peace Visible podcast is hosted by Jamil Simon and produced by Andrea Muraskin. This is a recording of a panel from the Socialism 2025 conference in Chicago, held over July 3–6. It examines Putin's repression of critical voices, those who have publicly opposed his war of aggression against Ukraine. Boris Kagarlitsky, the well-known Marxist critic of Putin's regime, is currently serving a five year sentence in a penal colony for "justifying terrorism" – a charge stemming from a satirical comment about the Crimean bridge explosion. While Kagarlitsky's case has drawn international attention, many other leftwing critics remain imprisoned in obscurity, often held in appalling conditions. The panel was moderated by Suzi Weissman, editorial board member of Against the Current and Critique, host of the Jacobin Radio podcast and author of 'Victor Serge: The Course is Set on Hope'. It features contributions from Russian socialist Ilya Budtraitskis, Ksenia Kagarlitskaya, the daughter of jailed Russian Marxist Boris Kagarlitsky, Grusha Gilaeva, managing editor of Russian anti-war website Posle, and Simon Pirani, historian and researcher on Russia and Ukraine. At the recent Socialism 2025 conference in Chicago, Suzi moderated a panel about political prisoners in Russia and brings it now to Jacobin Radio. We hear from Ksenia Kagarlitskaya, founder of the Freedom Zone campaign that organizes festivals around the world in support of political prisoners and their families. She plays a recorded message from her father, imprisoned Marxist Boris Kagarlitsky in Penal Colony No. 4. Historian Simon Pirani and exiled scholar Ilya Budraitskis draw attention to the silenced left prisoners of conscience resisting war — both from inside Russia's prison system and in exile. This is not just about Russia. As authoritarianism surges globally, the criminalization of dissent follows a familiar script. The day before this panel on July 3, eleven political prisoners, including Kagarlitsky, issued an open letter to world leaders. They called for the mass release of Russian political prisoners and Ukrainian civilian hostages — an estimated 10,000 people — as part of any peace settlement between Russia and Ukraine. As pressure builds for an end to the war, their call must become ours: freedom for all political prisoners! Jacobin Radio with Suzi Weissman features conversations with leading thinkers and activists, with a focus on labor, the economy, and protest movements.

In this conversation we talk with Garrett Felber about their latest book A Continuous Struggle: The Revolutionary Life of Martin Sostre.  In discussing this new political biography, we cover Sostre's ideological and political journey, history as a jailhouse lawyer, his forms of organizing practice, and the ways that people supported his campaign for freedom from political imprisonment. We talk about the influence of Great Depression era Harlem, Black and Puerto Rican Nationalism, Marxism-Leninism, national liberation movements, armed struggle, Women's Liberation, and Anarchism on Sostre's political thought and practice. Although much of what we know about Martin Sostre has to do with political letters and writings during the time of his incarceration, Felber also shares insights that few know about Sostre's life, community organizing, and institution building on the outside. Garrett Felber is an educator, writer, and organizer. They are the author of Those Who Know Don't Say: The Nation of Islam, the Black Freedom Movement, and the Carceral State, and coauthor of The Portable Malcolm X Reader, with Manning Marable. Felber is a cofounder of the abolitionist collective Study and Struggle and is currently building a radical mobile library, the Free Society People's Library, in Portland, Oregon. Yesterday we hosted Garrett Felber along with Russell Shoatz III on a livestream where we talked about some of the resonances between Martin Sostre's life, political thought, and approaches to political prisoner defense work and that of Russell “Maroon” Shoatz and we also discussed CURBfest which is expanding to the West Coast for the first time this year.  Tomorrow Thursday the 29th we will host a livestream on Sundiata Jawanza's Freedom Campaign including a quickly approaching parole hearing. We encourage all of you to go to the website and send letters of support for his release. The website says that letters were due on May 19th, but there is still just a little time if you can get a letter in the mail today or at least submit one electronically or contribute to the legal support fund that would be great.  There are a number of other initiatives we want to share related to this episode, the campaign to free the Mississippi 5 which Garrett Felber mentions in this episode and the exoneration effort for Martin Sostre and his codefendant who is still with Geraldine (Robinson) Pointer. Links for that are in the show description. If you like the work that we do, please contribute to our patreon or BuyMeACoffee accounts. These episodes each take hours of preparation, recording time, and production time and listeners like you are the only means of support for that work. Over the last month we've seen a 10% decline in recurring support. We know people are under financial strain right now, but if more of you who listen are able to contribute even a dollar a month it helps make this show possible and sustainable. Thank you for your support! Links:  Martin Sostre and Geraldine (Robinson) Pointer's names should have been cleared after they were framed. America's Political Prisoner Mahmoud Khalil—Columbia student, green card holder, and husband to a U.S. citizen—has been detained for nearly three months without being charged with a single crime. His “crime”? Leading peaceful pro-Palestinian protests and refusing to cover his face. While his wife Noor Abdallah gave birth to their son alone, Mahmoud sat in ICE detention in Louisiana.Hawk discusses the heartbreaking and outrageous story of Khalil's arrest, the shadowy role of Canary Mission, and the disturbing involvement of officials like Marco Rubio and Columbia professor Shai Davidai. He explores how dissent is being criminalized in real time under the Trump administration—and how Canary Mission's blacklisting of activists is being used to feed arrests.Hawk highlights the courageous voice of Mahmoud's wife Noor Abdallah, legal updates on Mahmoud's case, and the broader implications for First Amendment rights, academic freedom, and the silencing of Palestinian solidarity. This is a story of political imprisonment, media complicity, and systemic injustice. José “Pepe” Mujica was a former political prisoner who suffered more than a decade of prison and torture under Uruguay's military dictatorship. He rose to become the country's president from 2010 through 2015.They called him the world's humblest president. He was often seen driving himself in his 1987 baby blue VW bug. He lived on a farm. His clothes were simple. So were his words and his actions. Yet he created tremendous change and left an indelible mark on the tiny country of Uruguay and the entire region of Latin America. This is episode 36 of Stories of Resistance—a podcast co-produced by The Real News and Global Exchange. "Lucy Connolly: Political Prisoner or Racist?" LucyConnolly #PoliticalPrisoner #FreeSpeech #KeirStarmer #SouthportMurders Lucy Connolly lost her appeal today. She's now serving a 31-month sentence for a single offensive tweet—a tweet she deleted just three hours after posting it, during the emotional fallout of the Southport murders. Her defence argued she was traumatised, both by the brutal incident and by the loss of her own child. The controversial tweet allegedly incited anger and contributed to riots near a migrant hotel. With limited legal support, Lucy Connolly pleaded guilty, advised by a duty lawyer to accept a lesser sentence. But was justice really served? Many now claim she was used as a political example—a warning to others. Meanwhile, it's been revealed that Keir Starmer may have withheld information about Axel Rudakubana, the man behind the Southport killings—information that could have helped prevent the riots. In a time when the UK faces a prison overcrowding crisis, and more dangerous offenders are being released early, the case raises serious questions: • Is Lucy Connolly a political prisoner or simply being held accountable? • Is there a two-tier justice system in Britain? • Who should police public speech—the courts, or the police?

They discuss the impact of Vladimir Putin on global affairs and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Ian explains that despite Russia suffering an estimated 900,000 casualties in the war, the country hasn't fallen apart due to strict government control, lack of free speech, and severe punishments for dissent.Political Prisoners in Putin's RussiaIan discussed the increasing number of political prisoners in Putin's Russia, surpassing the Soviet Union's post-Stalin era. He highlighted the return of old techniques like psychiatric institutions and show trials, and the lack of a fair legal system in Russia. Ian also touched on the militarization of Russian culture, both historically and under the Putin regime, and the government's strategy of bribing people to join the military.Rise of Fascism in RussiaIan and Nick discussed the rise of fascism in Russia, tracing its roots to the late Soviet era when dissident groups emerged, including neo-Nazi and nationalist movements. They noted the disappointment of many Russians with the experience of democracy in the 1990s, which led to the rise of a nationalist, irredentist, and revanchist bloc.Russian Propaganda Tactics and ControlIan discussed the Russian government's propaganda tactics, including creating multiple narratives to shape public opinion and reality.
