get strong California Wants to Ban 3D Printers | Episode 593 Good morning. This is James from SurvivalPunk.com. It's 29 degrees. The coffee didn't start. The breaker tripped. My headphones weren't charged. My phone was at 9%. I forgot my medicine and had to turn around in the driveway. So yeah — we're already off to a strong start. And today we're talking about something equally annoying: California trying to ban certain 3D printers. Not because they're dangerous. Not because they're exploding. But because the government is afraid of what people might do with them. Let's get into it. The Headline Is Clickbait… But Also Not The headline reads something like: “California to Ban 3D Printers.” That's bombastic. That's designed to grab attention. But it's not entirely wrong. What they're really trying to do is ban non-approved 3D printers, restrict file sharing, and criminalize ways of bypassing those restrictions — all aimed at stopping people from printing “ghost guns.” Ghost guns meaning: firearms printed from polymer without serial numbers. Here's the issue. This isn't a widespread crisis. This is government reacting to a hypothetical problem. 3D Printers Are Still in Their Infancy 3D printers right now are like computers in 1992. How many people had one back then? A few. Most of them weren't doing anything groundbreaking. They were playing Oregon Trail. That's where 3D printing is right now. If you think of ten people you know, maybe one owns a 3D printer. And of those owners? How many are truly using them to their full potential? Most of them sit there like a treadmill with clothes hanging on it. The narrative being pushed makes it sound like garages across America are mass-producing plastic arsenals. That's just not reality. Government Overreach Is the Real Pattern This isn't about safety. It's about control. We've seen this pattern before: Rainwater catchment restrictions.Filter bans.Endless regulatory creep. Every time there's a new tool that increases individual capability, the instinct is to regulate it before it's even a measurable threat. And once a government starts restricting hardware, restricting file sharing, and criminalizing workarounds — that's not about safety anymore. That's about controlling information and capability. That should concern you whether you own a 3D printer or not. Are 3D Printed Guns Even a Real Issue? Here's a question: How many major shootings have involved fully 3D-printed firearms? Not hypotheticals. Not headlines. Not fear narratives. Actual confirmed cases. Very, very few — if any. Most violent crime still involves traditional firearms obtained through traditional means. So we're building legislation around something that's statistically insignificant. Meanwhile, 3D printers are used to make: ToolsRepair partsAdaptersHobby projectsPrototypesFunctional survival gear But because something could be misused, we're talking about banning the tool entirely. That's backwards. If You Live There… You Already Know At some point, you have to ask: Why are you staying in a state that constantly moves the goalposts? You can fight every single regulation. You can try to out-argue lawmakers. Or you can recognize patterns. When governments show you who they are repeatedly, believe them. Sometimes the most strategic move isn't fighting every skirmish. It's relocating to ground that isn't actively hostile to your independence. Freedom isn't about screaming at politicians. It's about positioning yourself where you don't need their permission. Final Thoughts This isn't about 3D printers. It's about capability. Every time technology empowers individuals, there will be pressure to restrict it. The question is simple: Do you want a society where tools are allowed unless proven dangerous? Or one where tools are restricted because someone might misuse them? And while it was fun to have access to that technology at home, the cost for ribbons and ink kept rising. Over the years, I've gone from dot matrix to inkjet. But sadly, the expensive printer I have now is out of ink. It dried up a long time ago. I guess that's what happens when you don't use the equipment for a few years. Who prints anything anymore? Oscar Castaño Linares is a professor at the University of Barcelona and a researcher at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia in the department of Biomaterials for Regenerative Therapies. Through his research, Oscar has been working with 3D printers to print scaffolds that enhance the growth of blood vessels. These are like homes for cells to inhabit, so they have to be porous, biodegradable, and non-toxic. Like a craftsman learning a trade, Oscar's research has taken him all over the world to learn new techniques, but with the goal of transferring that knowledge to his students and to other scientists. Oscar joins us to share how he can print these biomaterials while describing his path in science that led him to this research. This evening at Pilsen Community Books in Chicago included a packed-house crowd for a celebration for the release of Citizen Printer by renowned letterpress printer Amos P. Kennedy, Jr. A self-described “humble negro printer,” Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr., is internationally recognized for his type-driven messages of social justice and Black power, emblazoned in rhythmically layered and boldly inked prints made for the masses. Borrowing words from civil rights heroes such as Rosa Parks, Fannie Lou Hamer, Frederick Douglass, and Sojourner Truth, Kennedy issues fearless statements on race, capitalism, history, and politics—along with plenty of witty truisms—in his exuberant, colorful, and one-of-a-kind posters and handbills. Amos P. Kennedy, Jr. was working a corporate job when, at nearly forty, he discovered the art of letterpress printing on a tour of Colonial Williamsburg. Kennedy then devoted himself to the craft, earning an MFA in graphic design at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He now operates Kennedy Prints!, a letterpress printshop in Detroit. He has exhibited in dozens of museums and galleries across the United States, including the Library of Congress, and the libraries of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Monica Trinidad (she/they) is a queer Latine visual artist, communicator, and cultural strategist. A lifelong Chicagoan, Monica has created zines, graphics, mixed media posters, communication strategies, and plans highlighting youth-led, intergenerational, and intersectional grassroots organizing work in Chicago and nationally. Chi Nwosu is a Black, non-binary, queer, Nigerian artist based in Chicago. Their work is an alchemy of cultural narratives that centres marginalised experiences and utilises potent cultural, political, and spiritual symbols. This show has been flagged as Explicit by the host. Background I have a very old EPSON R300 inkjet printer It has served me well for many years. I thought it was at least 10 if not 15 years old. I got it before I even became interested in Linux. For many of those years now I have been using this printer extensively on Linux. It has been a really good printer and has been incredibly cheap to run. Many years ago I got a number of sets of ink for it. I think they only cost me £15! A colleague at work later on gave me more sets of ink. I ended up with a large bag full of ink cartridges which I have been working my way through ever since. I used the printer infrequently for many years. This is far from ideal for an ink jet printer as doing so tends to cause the ink jet nozzles to clog up. Unsurprisingly in later years it has become somewhat temperamental. The problems consisted of paper mis-feeds (Probably down to the rubber take up rollers going hard over time) and missing bits of print (This I assume due to infrequent use of the printer and age of ink jet cartridges all of which were well out of their expiration date). The mis-fed paper could be solved by individual feeding each sheet through the printer. The poor / missing print could be solved by a combination of running the print head clean routine or by replacing the offending cartridge. Latterly I had print problems again and as per usual after cleaning the heads and then finally changing the cartridge the printer resumed printing normally. Shortly after this I bought myself an Apple iMac mini and thought it could be useful to be able to print from it. I visited the EPSON website downloaded and installed the EPSON print driver for my trusty R300 printer. I tried printing from my iMac and received a warning stating something like some of the components within your printer are worn and may need servicing. I'd never seen a message like this before as I normally print using open source print drivers on Linux which never report such things. When I tried printing on my Apple Mac no black text was visible on the page. I tried running the head cleaning routine and this made no difference. I eventually had to resort to changing the colour of the text within the LibreOffice document. This allowed me to print text that was at least legible. At the time I was a little suspicious of all this as the printer had been working so well just a few days previous. I plugged my trusty printer back into my trusty PC running an old version of Ubuntu using the open source printer drivers. Fired up LibreOffice and tried to print a document. To my surprise the printout was very good. While it was not as good as when the printer was new the quality of the black and coloured text was actually very good. My suspicion though I can't prove it is that the EPSON print driver has worked out that the printer is 10 plus years old and needs to be returned to EPSON for servicing (or to purchase a new printer). To ensure this the driver is crippling the output from the printer. The Open Source print drivers have none of the nefarious nonsense and allows the printer to operate. As I said I cannot prove any of this however I'll leave this up to you decide what you think is going on here. At this point I was going to end the podcast however the story didn't end there. The story continues My mother wanted me to print out some holiday insurance documents for her. She sent me a copy of her documents as I told her my printer was working again. The first page printed out slightly faintly but was readable the other pages seemed to print using invisible ink. I tried cleaning the heads but it made no difference. It's looking a bit like my printer or at least the cartridge is past its expiry date. Clearing out our loft I found the original box for my EPSON R300 printer and discovered that it was purchased in May 2005. This means the printer is now over 20 years old! At this point I decided that it was maybe about time that I replaced our ageing printer. We use the printer very infrequently and rarely need colour. For this reason I decided this time to buy a laser printer since I believe these don't tend to dry out like ink jet printers and are less likely to suffer with infrequent use. Only time will tell though I don't expect this one to last 20 years! Finally after all this I am not sure if using the EPSON driver had anything to do with the final demise of my printer though who knows. The mainstream financial media buried the lede in its reporting on last week's Fed meeting.  They reported on the rate cut. They sliced and diced the dot plots. They analyzed every syllable coming out of Jerome Powell's mouth. But they barely mentioned the biggest story - the Fed just restarted quantitative easing (QE).  In this week's Midweek Memo podcast, host Mike Maharrey covers the stuff the mainstream reporters left out. He explains what the Fed plans to do, why it is QE no matter what they call it, and how it will impact normal people. Hint: it means more inflation.
