This podcast episode discussing China's growth performance and prospects, as well as the reasons behind some of its bold policy moves. In this episode, KBRA Managing Director and Head of Sovereigns Joan Feldbaum-Vidra explains why China's Q3-Q4 and longer-term growth may be on weaker footing, why small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in China are struggling, and how tightening of credit elsewhere, coupled with regulatory U-turns, may dampen investment.“Major regulatory action aims to change the way business is being conducted in China," — Joan Feldbaum-Vidra, Managing Director and Head of Sovereign Ratings, KBRA

What's going with Amazon operations ahead of Q4? Today, we attended a virtual presentation by Amazon’s head of worldwide supply chain Devesh Mishra, who is a 15-year Amazon veteran, and provided perspective and information on how Amazon is managing operations ahead of the Q4 peak season, new investments in supply chains and operations, and support of FBA/3P sellers. Key highlights are included below.· Key highlights from Amazon's keynote presentation/VP of WW Supply Chain Devesh Mishra. Bottom line, Amazon is working quickly to better handle the expected unprecedented seasonal demand in Q4, using advanced data/machine learning capabilities, as well as rapid new investments in infrastructure. We note these investments will weigh on margins and cash flow a bit in Q3/Q4, but should help the company adapt to changing supply/demand dynamics longer term. Per the keynote...o Never seen as much disruption to worldwide supply chains as in last few months. This Q4 will be very different than any other he’s seen, and global supply remains uncertain, with lead times from shipment creation to delivery more than doubling.o FC are backed up. Inbound volumes are higher than demand ahead of the holidays. However, due to process changes, they are now seeing improvements in receive times and delivery speeds. Amazon is piloting new incremental storage facilities upstream from FCs to add capacity and manage inventory flows.o Data, data, data. Company is using feedback from customers and sellers, as well as AI/Machine learning, to make real-time changes to the supply chain. Specifically, machine learning is adapting Amazon’s inventory forecasting model, modifying for changing demand patterns, and local mobility data to adjust inventory. Amazon already predicts product-level demand for essentially any product worldwide. As such, they know what inventory to stock, and where to place that inventory close to customers.o Amazon is adding 33 new FCs this year, and will have 35 million cubic feet of new capacity for holiday 2020, along with the additional employees.o Amazon will also have 80 cargo planes in the fleet by next year. Amazon also purchased 20k delivery vehicles for the Delivery Service Partner program, and has 100k electric delivery vehicles on order.o Amazon is expanding X-border logistics and transportation — to enable more sellers to sell globally; in addition, Amazon is managing the end-to-end supply chain from manufacturers through to end-customers. As such, 3P sellers can now book, manage, track, and pay for ocean and air cargo services directly from Amazon from China to U.S. and Europe.o Introducing a new program, Amazon Inventory Manager — Amazon creates and manages shipping plans and inventory management on behalf of sellers, which in turn makes this inventory eligible for Prime 1-day or same day shipping.Get Amazon Consulting at https://myamazonguy.com/#amazonselling #amazonseller #amazonfbaSupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/myamazonguy)

Today's guest on "The Aid Station" is Andrew Messick, CEO at IRONMAN Group coming to us from Tampa, Florida. Andrew gives a behind the scenes look at the operational complexities of having to postpone 97 races into an already packed Q3/Q4 calendar. He talks about the importance of "over communication" to make it happen, especially with staff and a key focus on supporting younger staff during such trying times. He also highlights the value that our industry plays in giving people a goal and focus with so many athletes saying things like "I just want an anchor to focus on" which has also been reflected in the huge participation levels in the newly launched VR Club. Andrew shares his belief that the endurance industry mindset is ideally positioned to "just keep going" through these challenging times "it's like being in the last half of the marathon - keep putting one foot in front of another .."
Investors continued the bloodletting in Thursday's trading session. Despite the blood and emotions, there is plenty of room for stocks to drift further downward. Many technology companies have seen their stocks reach levels last seen in Q3/Q4 2019 which was hardly a trough. TEK2day article: https://tek2day.com/2020/03/12/let-it-bleed/
Show #557 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 21st August 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Firstly thank you to new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER GENE RUBIN! Also PRODUCER @TESLAHISTORIAN and finally PRODUCER ANDREW TILL TESLA POSTPONES FULL SELF-DRIVING PRICE INCREASE UNTIL V10 AND SMART SUMMON "Tesla was planning to increase the price of its “Full Self-Driving” package last week that was supposed to coincide with an update to its Autopilot features, like the new Smart Summon, but it now won’t happen until September/October." writes Fred at Electrek: "Earlier this month, Tesla announced plans to increase its Full Self-Driving price again on August 16, but August 16 came and went without any price increase. Today, Tesla CEO Elon Musk now confirmed that the price increase has been postponed until they release Version 10. Smart Summon, also known as Enhanced Summon, builds on Tesla’s previous Summon feature, which was used by owners to move their cars autonomously for a few feet in their driveway or in tight parking situations. With the new version, owners are able to Summon their Tesla vehicles from further away, and the cars will navigate more complex parking environments." https://electrek.co/2019/08/20/tesla-v10-smart-summon-postponed-full-self-driving-price-increase/ 2020 KARMA REVERO GT STARTS FROM $135,000 "Earlier this month, Karma Automotive announced details about the new 2020 Karma Revero GT, which is scheduled for retail deliveries from Q4 2019 on." according to InsideEVs: "The starting price (MSRP) is $135,000, which after destination charge and deducting the $7,500 federal tax credit, is effectively $128,900. 28 kWh battery (instead 21.4 kWh) expected 61 miles (98 km) of all-electric range EPA range (Revero 37 miles EPA) up to 360 miles (579 km) of total range, including up to 80 miles (129 km) electric and up to 280 miles (451 km) with generator 0-60 mph (96.5 km/h) in 4.5 seconds (Revero 5.4 seconds) 1.5L BMW TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder in-line engine (same as in BMW i8) as onboard generator (previously 2L GM engine) dual-motor rear-wheel drive (with torque vectoring for rear wheels)" https://insideevs.com/news/366314/2020-karma-revero-gt-135000/ REALITY CHECK: CHADEMO FAST-CHARGING STATIONS STILL OUTNUMBER CCS ONES "As tallied by the U.S. government’s Alternative Fuels Data Center, you’ll find that even now, in the second half of 2019, there are still more places to fast-charge CHAdeMO vehicles than those with CCS. As of August 20, 2019, there are 2,140 charging stations and 3,010 connectors with CHAdeMO fast charging. CCS still lags behind CHAdeMO in the number of stations by more than 250, while it has about 500 more connectors. And Tesla has 678 Supercharger locations with 6,340 connectors. The Nissan Leaf lineup is the only one still on the market to primarily use the CHAdeMO standard." says Green Car Reports: "Part of the reason why CCS hasn’t gained ground is that, as called out in the Partial Consent Decree of the Volkswagen diesel settlement, Electrify America has to future-proof its stations by operating across different charging standards. Therefore, all public-facing fast chargers will include a CHAdeMO connector—just one, in most cases, running at 50 kw instead of the CCS connectors’ 150kW or 350kW" https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1124639_chademo-fast-charging-stations-still-outnumber-ccs-ones MYSTERIOUS AUDI Q3 TEST MULE SPOTTED WITH CHARGING INLET "Spy photographers recently spotted in southern Europe an Audi Q3 with a charging inlet on the left-front fender, which clearly indicates it's a plug-in test mule." but what IS it, asks InsideEVs: "The question without an answer is whether it's a plug-in hybrid or an all-electric Audi test vehicle. It might herald a Q3 PHEV or a Q3/Q4 e-tron BEV, according to CarPix." https://insideevs.com/news/366367/audi-q3-test-mule-charging-inlet/ TOMTOM BOOSTS ELECTRIC REVOLUTION WITH TOOLS TO BEAT RANGE ANXIETY TomTom, [TOM2] the location technology specialist, today announced the launch of two new APIs for developers to help build applications for electric mobility. The new Long Distance EV Routing API allows users to route from A to B beyond one charge. The routing algorithm, specifically designed to optimize travel time, calculates the route including stops to charge, displaying an estimated arrival time that also considers the charging time. The second new API, EV Charging Stations Availability API, provides information about the availability of the charging stations per plug type, making sure the driver knows before arrival whether a charging point is available for use or not. https://www.tomtom.com/company/press-releases/news/25686/ FIRST 50 ORDERS DELIVERED AS ELECTRIC JCB DIGGER IN FULL PRODUCTION JCB has made manufacturing history by going into full production with the construction industry’s first fully electric mini excavator – with more than 50 machines already delivered. The 19C-1E models - JCB’s first-ever electric diggers - are now coming off the assembly line at JCB Compact Products in Cheadle, Staffordshire, with orders rolling in from customers from across Europe and North America. The machine is a staggering five times quieter than its diesel counterpart and can be fully charged in under two hours. The model is expected to be a big hit with companies working inside buildings and in emissions and noise-sensitive inner-city areas. Fully charged, the 19C-1E can put in a typical full day’s shift for a mini excavator. The 19C-1E will also offer customers great cost-of-ownership benefits, with research highlighting that over the first five years, charging costs will be 50 per cent cheaper for customers who would otherwise be using red diesel. Servicing costs are also expected to be up to 70 per cent lower compared to the diesel model. https://www.jcb.com/en-gb/news/2019/08/first-ever-electric-jcb-diggers-start-to-roll-off-production-line EO CHARGING AND MOIXA CONNECT FOR SMART EV CHARGING "The UK charger manufacturer EO Charging and smart grid firm Moixa are cooperating to create a dedicated smart home battery and solar package for electric vehicles. The system is designed to store renewable energy and to use it to charge the EV." reports electrive: "More specifically, the solution is to integrate an EO Genius EV charger and a 4.8kWh Moixa Smart Battery. The system is then connected to a customer’s solar panels and managed via Moixa’s smart-energy management software GridShare. Chris Wright, CTO at Moixa, stressed that not only will this maximise the use of home-generated solar energy but “at the same time customers will be able to take full advantage of emerging smart tariffs, and benefit from the cheap overnight energy for car charging while covering their household consumption during peak pricing”." https://www.electrive.com/2019/08/21/eo-charging-and-moixa-connect-for-smart-ev-charging/ TESLA’S EUROPEAN DEMAND RUMORS GET BLOWN OUT OF THE WATER "There is a certain predictive quality in looking at the ships Tesla’s has charted to ferry cars to Europe. In the past two quarters, the Europe/China ratio was 50/50, with the European vessels carrying some more cars than the ships bound for China." analyses Clean Technica: ""Now, in this third quarter, the Europe/China ratio is 2/1. Of the first 9 ships planned so far, 6 have been destined for Europe. The first shipload has reached the delivery centers, the second is on quay in Zeebrugge. The third is on the Atlantic, the fourth is nearing the Panama Canal, the fifth is at Pier 80 at San Francisco being loaded, and the sixth is due early next week in port." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/08/21/teslas-european-demand-rumors-get-blown-out-of-the-water/ ⛴ Morten Grove

PORSCHE TAYCAN SPECS "A recent review of a Taycan Turbo pre-production prototype suggests that the top-tier variant of Porsche’s electric car could live up to its name" reports Simon at Teslarati: "Equipped with a 96 kWh lithium-ion battery that weighs 650 kg , a 215 bhp motor on the front axle, and a 402 bhp motor at the rear. That’s enough to propel the car from a dead stop to 60 mph in just over 3 seconds and into 124 mph in less than 10 seconds. Porsche notes that the Taycan can perform ten full-throttle 0-62 mph and four 0-124 mph launches without seeing a decrease in performance. When the Taycan gets released later this year, for example, the vehicle will be capable of charging up to 250 kW at an 800-volt charging point. The car is compatible with 350 kW charging, but that would come by 2021 at the latest. And from InsideEVs who noted that CAR Magazine got the specs whilst at Goodwood Festival Of Speed: Base Taycan - with 80 kWh battery and RWD (two motor choices of 322 bhp or 376 bhp) priced at low $90,000. mid-range Taycan Carerra 4S - with 96 kWh battery and AWD (power output of 429 bhp or 483 bhp), priced at high $90,000. Taycan Turbo - with 96 kWh battery and AWD (over 600 bhp of power and 649 lb-ft of peak torque, 738 lb ft in the 10-second overboost window), priced at £120,000 ($149,000). Specs include: Up to 320 miles (515 km) of range (likely WLTP) two-speed transmission 215 bhp/221 lb-ft on the front axle, 402 bhp/406 lb-ft on the rear axle motors top speed of 16,000 rpm 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.2 seconds 0-124 mph (200 km/h) in less than 10 seconds "ten full-throttle 0-62 mph and four 0-124 mph launches without seeing a decrease in performance" top speed of 162 mph (261 km/h) "without battery overheating" curb weight of 2,095 kg air suspension regenerative braking power controlled from the steering wheel Taycan Turbo S - in the works, AWD with power output of 724 bhp Taycan GTS - in the work, lighter RWD version The official public unveiling is September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. https://www.teslarati.com/porsche-taycan-turbo-tesla-model-3-performance-rivalry/ https://insideevs.com/news/360375/porsche-taycan-specs-unveiling/ MG ZS EV AVAILABLE FROM £21,495 FOR FIRST 1,000 CUSTOMERS MG Motor UK today announces its entry into the zero-emissions vehicle market with the first truly electric vehicle, the MG ZS EV. Customers wishing to make sure they secure one of the first 1,000 retail cars, available from just £21,495, can place a £500 deposit to reserve their place in the queue by visiting MG.CO.UK/ELECTRIC Mark Kane for InsideEVs points out production considerations: "It's hard to say much about the demand for ZS EV in the UK, but the Chinese factory is reportedly able to deliver 300,000 annually according to MG, but we take it with a pinch of salt as SAIC would need to have 13 GWh of batteries on hand." TOYOTA AND CATL ENTER A SERIES OF COLLABORATIONS "Toyota has just announced the cornerstones of a comprehensive battery collaboration with Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL). This includes not only a “stable” supply of CATL batteries for Toyota but also the development of new battery technologies and more." reports electrive: "Apart from battery cell supply and development, the deal also foresees the improvement of product quality and the recycling of used batteries. Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd. is not only one of China’s most important battery producers; with a share of around 16 per cent, CATL became the market leader for electric car batteries worldwide in 2017. " https://www.electrive.com/2019/07/17/toyota-and-catl-enter-a-series-of-collaborations/ POLESTAR 2 PERFORMANCE PACKAGE CUES TESLA MODEL 3 RIVALRY "The Polestar 2, planned to debut late this year, is aimed directly at the Tesla Model 3, with a base price of about $45,000 when it goes on sale next year." says Eric at Green Car Reports: "The brand has now confirmed that the Polestar 2 will come with a performance package, similar to the Model 3. Now Polestar has confirmed that the performance package will include Brembo brakes, Öhlins shock absorbers, 20-inch forged alloy wheels, and unspecified grippier tires. It will also include some eye-catching trim, including body adornments and apparently yellow seat belts. The launch edition of the Polestar 2 is expected to sell for $63,000, though even that may not have all the elements of the performance package. The Tesla Model 3 Performance starts at $56,190 with delivery. The price of the Polestar 2 Performance Package hasn't been set, but the company is reportedly targeting a price of about $5,000. Both will include all-wheel drive. It is expected to have a 78-kwh battery and Polestar is targeting a 275-mile EPA range rating." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1124041_polestar-2-performance-package-cues-tesla-model-3-rivalry 16% OF GLOBAL EV BATTERY CAPACITY IN MAY WENT TO TESLA MODEL 3 "a report from Adamas Intelligence says that 16 percent of EV battery packs globally produced last May were destined to Model 3 cars." according to InsideEVS: "The second car with the most demand for batteries got 4 percent of them. They went to the BYD Yuan. The Nissan Leaf is in the fifth position, with 3 percent of all EV battery packs produced in May. Speaking of Tesla, if we add the demand the Tesla Model S and the Model X have for battery packs, the American EV manufacturer is responsible for 22 percent of all global deployments in May." Whilst Green Car Congress says: "From January through May of this year, mor than 7 GWh of battery capacity was deployed globally in Tesla EVs. Inferring from the company’s strong Q3/Q4 sales record, Tesla is conservatively on track to exceed 20 GWh deployed by 2019 year-end, Adamas says." https://insideevs.com/news/360161/16-percent-batteries-model-3/ INTERVIEW: ELON MUSK REFLECTS ON SIGNIFICANCE OF TESLA MODEL S "To celebrate MotorTrend's 70th Anniversary, the editorial staff put together an "Ultimate" Car of the Year story to determine the most significant vehicle of the past 70 years. The following are excerpts from a video interview of Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk at Tesla's design studio, in Hawthorne, California." [clips - standing in front of the original Model S design car, why the large screen, why other car maker haven't made a better EV yet] https://www.motortrend.com/news/tesla-elon-musk-interview/ TESLA GIGAFACTORY 3 READY BY END OF YEAR "Morgan Stanley sent a team of analysts to China, and their estimates for the new plant's success are pretty good -- though not as optimistic as Elon's." says RoadShow by CNET: "The cars being built in that time wouldn't be like the cars from the company's Fremont factory, though. Instead, they'd be built from what are called complete knockdown kits or partial knockdown kits. This means that the cars are partially assembled elsewhere and Shanghai would be responsible for final assembly. Morgan Stanley's team estimates that Tesla's Shanghai facility should be able to produce 35,000 to 40,000 vehicles in 2020 and that number could increase to as many as 60,000 cars in 2021. Elon Musk's estimates for production in China are predictably more grand, with his estimates placing the figure somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 Model 3s per year by the end of 2019." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-gigafactory-3-china-shanghai-production-morgan-stanley/ SAN FRANCISCO DECIDES TO HAVE EMISSION-FREE TRANSPORTATION BY 2040 San Francisco just disclosed plans to ban combustion-engined vehicles by 2040. To inspire near term action and reduce emissions quickly, the EV Roadmap sets interim targets for 2025 and 2030. However it is necessary to give carmakers and customers time to adapt. This is why San Francisco says in its “Proposed Electric Vehicle Roadmap for San Francisco” it will have “Interim Targets” for reaching its goals. "These targets aim to rapidly electrify vehicle miles traveled (VMT) while reducing total VMT by increasing the share of sustainable trips. The targets also aim to reduce the sale of new gasoline and diesel vehicles with all remaining new car sales being electric by 2030." https://insideevs.com/news/360442/san-francisco-emission-free-transportation-2040/ HONDA PLANNING PLATFORM FOR LARGER ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Honda’s first series electric car is already open for pre-order in Europe. The Honda e has a special platform that will be the basis for other smaller EVs but now Honda is also working on an electric platform for larger models." reports Carrie Hampel for industry source Electrive: "Honda’s new global e-platform is to be put in action before 2025 and will enable a large number of body variants such as sedans and SUVs as well as the use of various batteries and engines. The basic setup will be an electric rear-wheel drive, but four-wheel drives should also be possible. While the small Honda e is primarily aimed at the European markets and the Japanese domestic market, the small electric car is apparently too small to appeal to customers in the USA. he new architecture will also be able to accommodate cells from various vendors, including Panasonic and CATL. In Episode 61 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with equity research analyst Gordon Johnson, about a possible bankruptcy of Tesla amid the recently announced SEC fraud charges levied against its CEO Elon Musk. The two also discuss the ongoing criminal probe of its CEO Elon Musk, by the Department of Justice, and the impact that it may have on the company's stock price. Gordon Johnson has been called the biggest bear on Tesla by Bloomberg and CNBC and has the lowest price target on the street for the electric car manufacturer. He’s also been recognized for his accurate stock picks in numerous publications including Bloomberg, Barron’s, Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, The Financial Times, and TheStreet.com. Tesla and Elon Musk were the subject of back-to-back episodes we did with Charley Grant and Mark Spiegel in the first two weeks of April 2018. At that time, we knew that the company had ended 2017 with $3.4 billion in cash and equivalents while having raised an additional $550 million from bonds backed by lease payments in February of this year. Tesla was also losing $28,000 on each car sold with long-term debt and battery purchase obligations standing at $31.4 billion and run-rate interest expense of nearly $600 million per year with a debt-to-equity ratio of 243% as of December 30th, 2017. Tesla has since released its second-quarter results, posting losses of $17,600 per car delivered. These numbers are expected to improve in the third quarter due to much higher sales volumes of the Model 3 along with sales of ZEV credits that the company stored but did not use in Q2. The run-rate interest expenses for Tesla stand at $654 million-per-year. The company has reported $2.236 billion in cash of which $942 million is in the form of customer deposits. In our conversation with Gordon Johnson, we begin with a discussion of the ongoing drama at Tesla, including a recent timeline of the most critical events surrounding the company: On August 1st, Tesla reports the largest quarterly loss in its history showing a GAAP loss of $717 million and free cash flow of negative $812 million. But shares rise on Musk’s claims of positive cash flow and profit in the second half of 2018, and signs of more consistent Model 3 production. In this Q2 release, Tesla claimed that it would be GAAP profitable in Q3 & Q4 baring a “force majeure.” I’ve asked Mark Spiegel for his take on this and his response is: “I’ve run numbers every which way I can and the best I can come up with for Q3 is a GAAP loss of around $100 million.” On August 7th, Elon Musk tweets that he is “considering taking Tesla private at $420 a share,” and then follows up by saying “funding secured.” On August 12th, Azealia Banks shares an Instagram story about how her experience at Elon Musk’s house resembled the movie “Get Out,” suggesting that Elon was possibly on drugs during the August 7 tweetstorm. On August 13th, Elon Musk follows up on his “funding secured” comments with a press release that attempts to provide context for the August 7 tweet. On August 15th, Charlie Gasparino reports that the SEC has started a probe into violations made by Elon Musk. On August 15th, ex-Tesla employee and whistleblower Martin Tripp tweets photos that he alleges came from inside the company showing battery scrap, trailers containing battery waste, and documentation of punctured battery parts in Model 3 vehicles. Tesla denies that any punctured battery parts made it into vehicles. On August 16th, a Tesla ex-security employee files a whistleblower complaint with the SEC, accusing the electric vehicle maker of spying on employees, hiding significant theft of raw materials, and alleging drug dealing at the company. On August 16th, Elon conducts a tearful interview with the New York Times. On August 20th, (or thereabouts) reports emerged that Lucid Motors (a silicon valley electric car startup) is in talks with Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund for a reported $1 billion in funding. On August 24th, Elon Musk released a public statement about his decision to keep Tesla public. On September 6th, Elon Musk does “the Joe Rogan Experience,” smoking marijuana during the show. On September 7th, Tesla’s chief accounting officer Dave Morton resigns after a month on the job. In a statement from Tesla’s recent 8K filing, Morton says he left Tesla because of “the level of public attention placed on the company.” Dave replaced the previous CAO, who left in March, on apparently no notice. On September 7th, Tesla’s Chief People Officer Gaby Toledano announces she is leaving the company after announcing a leave of absence in August. She was at the company for only a year, beginning in May of 2017. On September 8th, it is reported that Justin McAnear, vice president of worldwide finance and operation, is parting ways with Tesla. McAnear has confirmed that his last day at Tesla will be Oct. 7 according to a statement obtained by CNBC. On September 17th, British diver and cave explorer Vernon Unsworth sues Elon Musk for libel in a California district court. The lawsuit comes two months after Musk calls Unsworth a “pedo guy” on Twitter, following an interview in which the Brit denigrated Musk’s attempt to build a mini-submarine that could rescue a group of Thai boys trapped in a cave. Though Musk later deleted and apologized for the tweet, he doubled down on his accusations of pedophilia a month later. On September 17th, it is reported that Lucid Motors closed a $1 billion deal with Saudi Arabia to fund electric car production. On September 17th, reports emerge that the justice department has opened a criminal probe into Tesla over public statements made by Elon Musk. Despite the non-stop bad news emanating from the company, Tesla's stock price has been largely unaffected. Gordon Johnson believes that this resilience in Tesla’s stock may be coming to an end. Not only does he believe that Tesla is facing major quality control issues, but it is also his contention that demand for the electric car may already be collapsing. Add to this criminal charges that may be pending against Elon Musk, and one can begin to see a path towards bankruptcy emerging at Tesla. Taking a break Resting your mind is vital to your health and wellness, but that does not mean you stop your efforts to create the life you want The life I want is making a living as a content creator and online educator. My sights are on the long-term, so I’m in it for the marathon and not the sprint, so pace is important. Mid-Year Review: July 18th is the halfway mark of the year. The perfect time to evaluate your life and business roadmap for the year and set yourself up for a strong finish to 2018. Are you on the right track? Do you know where you are headed? Are you doing everything necessary to get there? Are you in control or are you in reaction mode? Summary of Episode: I share my content strategy and plan for the second half of 2018 as I get ready to refresh and head out for a 2-week vacation to Nantucket. I plan my summer vacation by planning my 3rd and 4th quarter content strategy and business goals. My version of work-life balance. The Podcast Hiatus I shared in Episode 149 The Freedom Show that I was going to take an indefinite hiatus from this podcast. I do not know when Episode 151 will be published or I may launch a brand new show. I am not putting pressure or making any grand promises as I do not know. I just know I am making the right decision because it is from my gut and heart. The 2018 Roadmap In Episode 122: The 2018 Roadmap Show, the priorities I listed were: Priority #1: Murphy Concierge (Generating Income) Priority #2: Tutorials & Classes: Priority #3: Writing Priority 4: Ask Mike Murphy Priority 5: YouTube Priority 6: Health & Wellness Mid-Year Reaction: Wow! I did a really good job with that Roadmap. Note: podcasting did not make the list of priorities, but it is of upmost importance to my content puzzle and should be for many brands and businesses. Audio & Podcasting are extremely important and effective as we move into a mobile-dominated world. I am not going anywhere. I just need to find the rhythm which will come from adjusting the format and possibly the entire topic or concept. It’s not firing on all cylinders and I know it. I am simply transitioning to a new phase. This is me taking one step back to move 2 steps forward. My homework: Brainstorm and add specific ideas and types of content for each of the priorities so I can control the ebb and flow of my life and business and not feel controlled or lost on what to do next. Mantra & Theme for 2018: Simplicity, Fundamentals, Storytelling. To maintain the lifestyle of simplicity and reducing physical & mental clutter and place more emphasis on fundamentals and storytelling in my content creation. Storytelling I am approaching this trip with storytelling on my mind. Creating content drawing from my own personal experiences that others can relate to and make a connection to me. I am looking to make content that strikes a nerve and hits home with others. I’m not concerned with how much content I create on this trip, but I am going to explore and experiment with my cameras and audio equipment and see what I can come up with. . Micro-storytelling is my goal. It’s how I teach. I take big concepts and break off pieces instead of trying to cover too much. This takes discipline and can be challenging as simple is not easy. This is how I want to approach storytelling. Snippets of the journey when pieced together tell a larger story. Storytelling Homework: In Nantucket will be to create some micro-content and just see what is working and what is not. If I find a groove then I will make a list of ideas to add to my document that I can make when I get back. My biggest goal in storytelling is to illustrate and share to the world the journey of starting and online business and trying to create a life of freedom and happiness and healthy living in a way that is educational and entertaining. People relate to stories. I relate to stories. Telling stories that teach and inspire is what I hope to achieve, but in my voice and style. Obviously. Examples of micro-content I want to make: The gear & tools I use. What my workspace looks like. Why do I do what I do? Who inspires me? What do I really want in life and business? How much money do I make? How much do I want? How do I pack for travel? Snippets of me. Not to promote me, but to let people into my journey and connect. This is the motivation I need to create stronger content. My biggest struggle is I create content I think will be helpful. I want to create content I know will be helpful because people tell me what they are struggling with. Priorities for Q3 & Q4 of 2018 [Murphy Concierge](https://murphyconcierge.com) is my local tech support business where I go to homes and businesses and fix and teach people how to use their tech devices. I love this role yet I spend the least time on it. Why? Fear of success. It may just work. Yes, that is a real struggle of mine. My homework: Create a membership subscription plan that is a win-win for my clients and me. An annual fee that gives clients 24/7 access to my help, with additional fees for in-person fixes. I have started on the model, but hope to fine tune it over the next 2 weeks. Tutorials & YouTube & Ask Mike Murphy I want to grow my YouTube channel significantly. If I could pay my bills making daily tutorials on YouTube, I would be happy. I want to make helpful videos. Adding to my YouTube push is adding a live-stream Ask Mike Murphy component. I have 1600 subscribers and do not know who they are. It’s time to meet them and engage more with them. I will do that on YouTube Live. My homework is to come up with a giant list of video ideas so I can get ahead with my content schedule and not feel like I’m drowning in work. It’s about balance and control. Writing: I think it is the backbone of content that will never go away. Audio & Video will thrive, but text ties it all together. I write a lot. I will write more and produce at least one more eBook this year. I also plan to double down on my Medium.com presence. My homework: Scour through 150 podcast episodes and try to come up with 50–100 article topics. Micro-content and build a library of articles for Medium & LinkedIN. Health & Wellness: This is really #1 priority. I am almost 48. I feel great. I want to feel amazing. No back pain for one. I am convinced that if you take care of your body, everything else falls in place. I’m determined to get in the best shape of my life because I know it will carry over to my business goals. Homework in Nantucket: Learn to jump-rope. I mean long enough to make it an exercise routine. I bought a jump-rope and I stink at it. AKA…I’m pooped after a few minutes of trying. I’ll get it. Bottom Line: My priorities and vision is still on point and in check. Taking a step back and taking a break does the body and mind good. My summer break may go on longer than my 2-weeks in Nantucket. That is okay if I need it. Just do not confuse taking a break with being lazy and unmotivated. Two different things. Creating the life you want and running a successful business is non-stop hard work, but it is vital you block out times to clear the board and think and refresh and re-evaluate. Checking in with yourself is essential. Plato said: “You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than you can in a year of conversation” What makes you tick? Are you doing enough of what brings you the most happiness? If not, set aside some time and give yourself a break. It’s Thursday 7th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. The background to the shareholder meeting was a $785million loss in the first quarter of this year alone. Model 3 production is good, and behind expectations. Mission: "To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. Thank you to everyone who I follow who attended and posted pictures, from a few thousand miles away I felt very close. Thank you Dennis Pascual who had great pics of the white Roadster on show, albeit without an interior so not a working model. A reminder to those with a spare $250,000 kicking around, you can put you deposit down now. The deposit being the full amount! 1.ELON GETS EMOTIONAL Elon started off emotional, almost walking on stage with tears in his eyes and steadying his voice. It was quite personal anything with some shareholders wanting him removed as Chairman, which was never a realistic proposal. Shareholders gave Elon and the board a full vote of confidence. It was visceral how much he cares, and how deeply invested he is on a personal level. Invested in the financial success, the quality of cars and above all, the safety of his workforce. "At Tesla, we build our cars with love. At a lot of other companies, they're built by marketing or the finance department, and there's no soul. We're not perfect, but we pour our heart and soul into it and we really care." WORKER INJURY RATE REDUCED Safer Employees was the title of this slide. Zach from Clean Technica says: "Tesla’s factory worker injury rate is now approximately 6% below the auto industry average and 50% what it was when GM and Toyota were last building cars in the NUMMI factory. Last year, Tesla’s factory worker injury rate was a bit above the auto industry average. Tesla’s long-term goal is to get it to 50% of the industry average, or 25% of what it was when GM and Toyota were running the factory." TESLA ARE IMPROVING QUALITY Tesla Model 3 repairs reduced rapidly from Sep 17 to January 18, and have stabilised now at a much lower level. BATTERY PACK AND CELL COST REDUCTIONS In the Q&A section, I thought some of the most interesting comments came when Elon and JB were chatting about battery cell prices. Below $100/kWh is the holy grail for cost parity with combustion engines and some analysts put that at 2020, others I’ve seen only last week said if couldn't be done before 2023. BNEF, hugely respected and knowing a lot more than I do, say 2025. Elon said...by the end of this year at cell level. That took my breath away to be honest. He said it depends on commodity prices, and it's cell level not pack level, but $100 by the end of the year? Even if you account for ElonTime and add 6 months (make it 12!) and it would be huge news. Pack level $100/kWh within two years, and even Elon joked that wasn't ElonTime, that was realistic time. He specifically talked about improvements to the chemistry, vertical integration at Giga, and production of anodes and cathodes. If i was an analyst today or at BNEF I’d be going back the calculator sharpish and revising my estimates so not to seem out of touch. As the battery pack is always the most expensive part of an EV, which reduces Tesla's costs and increases their margins. MODEL 3 IS TOP SELLING PREMIUM SEDAN It's hard with Tesla to focus on the stories that matter, such can be the chaos of media attention around them. Partly brought on by their own success, the half a million Model 3 reservations, and the bold claims they make about their ability to produce them. But they ARE making a lot of cars, and rates are improving. So much so that Model 3 is now the best-selling mid-sized premium sedan in the U.S. on a monthly basis, now outselling Daimler's popular Mercedes-Benz C-Class, according to Tesla. More than the Audi A4, more than the BMW 3Series, more than the Lexus IS. GIGAFACTORY OVERDRIVE Tesla expects to produce more than half of the world’s EV batteries in Q3 2018, including Chinese production. Without any sort of fact check, that was the stat which struck me as intriguing. There are a LOT of Chinese cars, trucks and buses being produced with rates on the rise, from the likes of BYD, BAIC etc. Oh and don't try to take a quick trip around the Gigafactory, Elon says it takes 2 hours if you don't stop, to see it all. And he & JB said it was only one third built. When finished it will easily be the biggest building on planet earth. That won't be complete for another 4 or 5 years. 1GWh OF ENERGY STORAGE As I talked about on yesterday’s podcast, if you missed it you might want to download that one we discussed more in detail the JB Straubel quotes, but Tesla didn't miss the chance to reiterate the news Tesla’s energy storage production has now reached 1 GWh worldwide. And they want to deploy the next 1GWh within a year, more of that phrase 'exponential growth' from EM. And talking energy, Elon dropped in how he happened to have bought a house opposite where he lives - not sure whether that's to live in or whether that's what you do as a billionaire - but that he had the Solar Roof put on it, and he's so happy with how it looks and works. It doesn't get the headlines but you could see how much Elon wants the Solar Roof to be the default choice of roof covering in the future, and he talked about it wanting to last 50 years. MODEL Y This was never meant to be the forum for major announcements about any of those things but inevitably we heard snippets of info. There was a new silhouette image of the Model Y, just the front, but the fanboys and fangirls loved it. He reiterated Twitter claims of a model Y reveal date of March 2019, with production commencing in H1 2020. ROADSTER The surprise of the Roadster unveil at the Semi event took the air out of the room at the time, but it gets better. There was laughter when Elon called the car he revealed last year the "base Roadster" and said “it’s gonna have a SpaceX options package.” So that's an improvement on 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds, Top Speed of 250mph and 620 mile range. I also thought it was interesting, and this doesn't get reported because Elon often says a 'thing' which gets all the headlines, but the sentence he says next can be more powerful. He said combustion technology has a halo effect on all ICE cars because it still owns the records, but he wants the Roadster to be the best, full stop. The fastest accelerating, the quickest, the best on the track, and the longest range between adding fuel. He said once an electric car bests combustion for everything then it's game on. Or rather, game over for gas. SEMI RE-DESIGN Elon did say the semi would get a redesign, where in Europe we have to use the cab-over-engine design to meet regulations on total length of truck. He also said the range would be beyond what anyone thinks is possible. He confirmed the finalised, single design would work in North America, Europe, China, and the rest of the world. MODEL 3 TEST DRIVES If you're lucking enough to live in an area with a Model 3 on display, you're already doing better than most, and certainly better than here in Europe. But Elon announced he wanted a Model 3 at every Tesla store, and next some cars for test drives. That's in the next two months. What model do you think they would put out for test drives? A basic 35k model, a fully spec'd model, a dual motor (let's call it the 3D) or the full beans performance P3D model? Either way I don't think just anyone will get a test drive, either existing S and X owners, or even just Model 3 reservation holders, to dissuade them from cancelling. COMPACT TESLA I love how an innocent question can be huge news. Will there be a compact-sized Tesla? One to take on the VW ID range, the Golf buying market? Oh yes says Elon, within 5 years. So watch out Golf, or Ford Focus, or Vauxhall Astra, or Audi A3. ELON WANTS TO GET BETTER AT 'TIME' “I do think I have an issue with time. This is something I’m trying to get better at. I’m a naturally optimistic person. I’m trying to recalibrate these estimates as much as possible.” AUTOPILOT He said he has been up until 1am last night testing Autopilot. Isn't that a fascinating insight? Autopilot features were said to “exponentially” improve over the next six-twelve months. He even confirmed that Tesla plans to bring back free Autopilot trials. TESLA BODYSHOP Domenick at InsideEV's described it best when he pointed out: "Tesla service centres will double over the next year, Musk mentioned that they will be adding Tesla body shop repair locations. These would be attached, mostly, to existing service centres, with the top 10 metro areas in the US getting one by the end of the month. Saying that this would create a huge improvement in both time and cost of body repair claiming, incredibly, that they would be able to achieve same-day repair in a lot of cases." 35K MODEL 3 DELIVERED FIRST QUARTER OF 2019 We will honor that obligation” to deliver at that price, he said, “and we would do so now if it was physically possible.” MODEL 3 AND THIRD ASSEMBLEY LINE He said the third general assembly line in its Fremont, California, plant will come online soon, ensuring production will hit 5,000 cars per week by the end of June. "All Model 3 production lines have demonstrated capability of producing 500 cars per day". If you remember 5,000/week was the target for end of 2017 but it's now looking like it might actually happen by the end of Q2, the end of June is 23 days time. Line 3 was confirmed to be more efficient than Lines 1 and 2. SUPERCHARGER EXPANSION 9,969 Superchargers Globally Today, a whisker away from 10,000. The Supercharger V3 will be ready by the end of the year, and when ready, the expansion rate will be increased to get more of the V3's out there. Elon said the plan is to put them at all the right places so you can drive around the world only on Superchargers. Long term they're working on charging ratios, which was a new term to me, with a charging time ratio on long trips of 6:1, later 8 or 10:1 (currently around 4.5:1). On the earnings call, but not in my notes from yesterday, was the charge rate of 200-250kW. CASH FLOW POSITIVE I was watching the live stream, which was super late here, on Ben Sullins YouTube channel, he was live streaming it but also had himself picture-in-picture in the corner of the screen offering some commentary. And when this came up, i think he punched the air. Or at least clapped. Cash. Flow. Positive. Something Tesla has claimed in the past would happen but never did, however Elon carefully chose his words to say they'd be cash flow positive and GAAP net income positive in Q3 & Q4 of 2018. He was careful to say "expecting" which backed off the word "definitely" he's used previously. Elon also said he doesn't expect to raise any capital during the year through debt or equity. CHINESE PRESENCE I got the feeling they weren't meant to talk about China, but it happened! They confirmed Shanghai as the rumours suggested for Giga there, and all operations under one roof. From raw materials in, to complete cars out. It follows the very recent news that China is now allowing EV makers to build facilities there without needed a joint venture with a domestic company. Tesla's revenue in China has risen from $319 million annually in 2016 to over $2 billion in 2017, with a presence there they will soon avoid import tariffs. Oh and not to forget Europe, they're deciding the location. And in total, they see a need for 12 worldwide Gigafactgories. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
