This episode is sponsored by Lockton, click here to learn more In this episode of the Automotive Leaders Podcast, Jan Griffiths welcomes Marques McCammon, the president of Karma Automotive, to share his leadership philosophy and journey. A proud graduate of North Carolina A&T State University and holding engineering and management roles in Detroit, including Chrysler, before leading Karma Automotive, Marques' story highlights breaking conventional molds. He emphasizes authentic leadership, being comfortable with oneself, and leading according to one's values. Having dared to dream big despite skepticism, he embodies the persistence in challenging the status quo and driving innovation. His leadership lesson focuses on serving the team, listening, making oneself available and vulnerable, and supporting the team to reach their full potential, a sharp contrast to the command-and-control leadership model commonly experienced in Detroit's automotive industry.Themes discussed in this episode:Marques McCammon's approach to leading and transforming a company. How Karma Automotive is pushing boundaries in vehicle design and technology.Addressing the challenges faced by the company and how they are turning them into opportunities. Why evolving leadership styles are crucial for the future of the automotive industry.Strategies for developing leadership skills and approaches that will be effective in navigating the future of the automotive industry. The critical role of software in driving innovation across various aspects of the automotive industry.Marques McCammon's vision for the future of Karma Automotive and the broader automotive industry.Featured guest: Marques McCammonWhat he does: Marques was named President of Karma Automotive, California's first and only ultra-luxury automaker, in April 2023. His tasks at Karma Automotive are twofold, equally ambitious, and paramount: to reinvigorate the brand and to implement alternate paths to revenue. His career, which spanned nearly three decades before joining Karma Automotive, showcases his expansive expertise in general management, product development, manufacturing, brand leadership, marketing, and software-focused automotive innovations. His leadership and contributions to the automotive sector have been recognized by Detroit Business, which listed him among the top 40 Young Executives making an impact in Detroit. On Leadership: "For me, I think that as a leader, my job is to serve my team. And by that, what I mean is there's always a greater number of employees than there are leaders, and we often, as leaders or people in leadership roles, get preoccupied with our notion of the authority that we carry or the title that we carry, and we're supposed to drive the day. But the reality is the work gets done by the team. And our job is to connect with that team, help them to find their potential, and their overlap with the other team members so that the organization can see its fullest potential."Mentioned in this episode:Interview with Kate Vitasek: Transforming UAW Strike Negotiations for a Win-Win OutcomeMeet Stefan Krause, A driving force

This week, our special guest on America on the Road is Marques McCammon, President of Karma Automotive. Karma is a California-based builder of high-performance electric vehicles whose very interesting plans include the imminent launch of the 1,100-horsepower Kaveya super coupe. Host Jack Nerad conducted an exclusive interview with the company's energetic chief exec, and they discussed the details of the Kaveya plus McCammon's plans to differentiate the American supercar brand from others in the space. The Karma Kaveya certainly appears to be worthy of further scrutiny. Its luscious super-coupe body equipped with butterfly doors is stuffed with four electric motors enabling four-wheel-drive. A 536-horsepower, rear-drive version of the car will be available by the end of 2025. The full-on 1,200-horsepower AWD version will arrive by the conclusion of 2026. As we first reported last week, Hyundai has announced a bold plan to remake virtually everything and change life as we know it during its press turn at CES. While that might seem like an exaggeration, it's really not. And we'll give you the startling details later in this segment. In somewhat less Earth-shattering news, Dodge has announced a new limited edition of its Durango SUV as it begins the phase-out of the HEMI V8. (Say it ain't so, Joe.) Honda wowed CES with some all-new electric vehicle concepts, as we'll have details on those. And not to be outdone, Hyundai also introduced a flying car at CES. We'll bring you the details and our reactions. In our road tests this week, Nerad had the opportunity to put the Ford Bronco Raptor to the test in blizzard conditions in the Midwest. Venturing far from his more weather-friendly home base, AOTR's host reacquainted himself with winter driving techniques at the wheel of the 418-horsepower twin-turbo V-6-equipped Bronco Raptor. At the same time, Co-host Chris Teague put the 2024 Mazda Mazda3 Turbo to the test, battling his own challenging weather conditions in New England. He discovered the 250-horsepower version of Mazda's compact car is a surprisingly good match for well-regarded hot hatches like the Volkswagen GTI. All that and more are coming up in this episode of America on the Road. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

From the Oxfordshire, UK town where he grew up, Chris Sachno set out to explore the world, first earning his MBA from the Fuqua School of Business at North Carolina's Duke University, then making his way to Japan, originally intending to learn Japanese. Not only did he become fluent in the language, he also caught the technology bug and went on to help develop tech that has been used in products like the BlackBerry, the iPhone, and the Apple Watch. But it's not just mobile devices that Chris was interested in, and he was drawn to cars - this past June he joined Karma Automotive and has helped shape the technological profile of their vehicles. In this episode, Chris has a very long-distance chat with Derek D about how the current electric vehicle revolution is kind of a comeback, why the current era is ideal for experimentation in EV design, and the mind-boggling innovations that may come to electric cars in a mere 10 years or so. Plus, he talks about why speed, safety, and range are the top areas for EV improvement, how it felt the first time he drove Karma's flagship vehicle and the instant torque kicked in, and more.Chris Sachno | Karma AutomotiveEpisode Highlights:The famous Henry Ford quote Chris keeps back of mind when considering designWhat the original driving force for EVs was, and why environmental concerns and beyond still make it a factorThe reasons that adoption leads to adaptation for any new technology. Why Chris is passionate about a great experience for both drivers and passengers“If you're using your phone and an application crashes - okay, you start it up again. Lifelong LA area resident William M. Monroe Jr. has been a leader on the OEM side of the auto industry for over 20 years, but now holds a prominent position at a highly distinctive company. Karma Automotive is the successor to California autobuilder Fisker, whose assets it bought out in 2014 - and William is Karma's current SVP of Global Sales, Marketing, and Customer Service. William has been instrumental in setting up Karma's global distribution, and in his previous roles at Volvo he led teams in a diverse range of departments and won internal company awards. On this episode, William joins our host Derek D to discuss how Karma's operations as an all-EV manufacturer are different from most automakers, why it's valuable to have staff that's composed of both gearheads and people with no outside interest in cars, and the statistical factor that's quickly changing customer perceptions of electric cars. Plus, he talks about solar and wind power's integration into energy infrastructure, the joy he gets from the torque and power of his own company's products, the motto he was raised with and how it's affected his perceptions of cars, and more.William M. Monroe Jr. | Karma AutomotiveEpisode Highlights:Why Karma vehicles' unique features necessitated some thought-through design choicesThe fringe benefit that incentivized EV adoption in California, and that could work across the countryWhat level of maximum charge range will cause a tipping point in public attitudes towards EVsThe type of events that best engage Karma's core customer base“You're still talking about a lot of cars to be added in a short amount of time. When you're designing a car start to finish, that process is usually about 8 to 10 years. So when you're a manufacturer and you're not prepared for the changes that are coming and you're behind, it's going to take a long time for you to catch up.” — William M. Our guest for the 23rd interview with unicorn start-up leaders is James Taylor, co-founder and CEO of Electric Last Mile Solutions (ELMS). ELMS is redefining the fleet transportation industry with its vertically-integrated approach to designing, manufacturing and customising electric last mile delivery vehicles. With proven technology, seasoned leadership and a vision of a sustainable future, they're moving the needle when it comes to the expectations of fleet managers and business operators. James Taylor is an experienced leader who co-founded ELMS in August 2020 and has served as ELMS' Chief Executive Officer since its inception. Prior to co-founding ELMS, James served as Chief Executive Officer of SERES from May 2019 until August 2020. Prior to SERES, James served as an executive in various automotive companies, including positions of increasing responsibility at Karma Automotive, Dura Automotive Systems and General Motors Company (including with world-renowned General Motors' brands Hummer and Cadillac). Among his advice on how to excel in communication, James believes you must train your abilities like with any sport and always be ready for game day. Practice, practice, practice. He reveals why brand reputation is extremely important in the automotive industry, and, in many cases, the difference between making money and not making money. He also points out how you can invent some markets, but in the car business often if it doesn't exist, there might be a good reason for it. According to James, the biggest fundamental in his learnings is to make sure you're starting out with at least a shot by asking yourself: is this product sound, and is there a customer demand? The interview, as usual, was co-hosted with Russell Goldsmith of the csuite podcast. We have distilled the most valuable, actionable insights from our first 15 interviews with leaders of unicorn companies and bottled them in our book ‘Growing without borders: The unicorn CEO guide to communication and culture'. Ira Spector owns a rare car he sometimes compares to a cute dog. It's a term of endearment. When he's driving his 2012 Fisker Karma Revero everyone wants to know all about it. "It's like a puppy; people stop you and they engage you," said Spector, who likely owns the only Revero in Los Gatos. "They ask questions; it's kind of fun. Most of them have never seen it before. Others who have seen one may think the company is bankrupt and that they're longer built." Fisker Karma: Rare, Beautiful Spector is our guest on this episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruch Aldrich talk with the car's owner, his enjoyment of sports cars and his automotive passion for his Fisker Karma. A 2012 Fisker Karma — only about 2,700 were globally available. A retired electrical engineer, Spector has further fun as the organizer of a club whose members own the iconic upscale sports car. The group periodically gathers for a seminar relating to the car, lunch and a driving outing. Owners from throughout the Bay Area and as far away as Canada bring their Karmas. The gatherings have had as many as 20 participants. "In my opinion, it's one of the most beautiful cars ever designed," said Spector, who has owned many other sports cars, including several Corvettes. "And that's why I want to keep it for as long as I can drive it. It's performing beautifully; it looks brand new inside and out." Fisker Karma: Made only in 2012 Although new versions were made after a change of ownership beginning in 2017, about 2,700 of the electric-gas, plug-in hybrid original Reveros were made in 2012. About 1,600 were available in the United States It's the only model manufactured by Fisker Karma and its originator, Henrik Fisker. The company went out of business a year after it began. "For any other manufacturer, that would be a prototype run," said Spector, a retired electrical engineer, about the limited edition."That's what we are all driving and everyone has had problems with it. It wasn't really finished." The original Fisker Karma was only manufactured for one year. The Revero has about a 50-mile electric-only range, 300-mile total range. When switched to "Sport" mode, the Karma will use the gas engine in conjunction with the electric motors. The total output is 403 horsepower. It accelerates from 0-to-60 miles per hour in about six seconds. Not everything was perfect. Replacement batteries weren't available until a third-party manufacturer emerged. When Revero models were repaired, Spector believes owners were used as test drivers to "find the bugs and get them fixed." Fisker Karma: A car drivers love driving But he's not complaining. The original car has had a resurgence. New models have also returned via Karma Automotive, headquartered in Irvine. Fisker attended the recent Los Angles Auto Show to tout his pending new all-electric sports car, the Fisker Ocean. Spector's car also carries a family legacy. With his Barbara (she drives a Tesla Model 3) then the mayor of Los Gatos, the couple drove the Revero via a loan from the owner in the city's annual holiday parade in 2012. Spector bought the car two months later for about $100,000. He traded in a Jaguar XK8. "It sat in a lot for a year with a bunch of other cars because of the company's bankruptcy issues," he said. "We were invited to rides in a parade. One of the investors in Fisker who had the car and let us use it. I fell in love with it just sitting in it and looking at it." The 2.0 GM turbocharged engine is similar to the engine in a Pontiac Solstice. It's used to charge the battery. The Revero, Spector says, is quiet, smooth and a vehicle for drivers who thrive on the enjoyment of driving. "The Fisker Karma was designed to engage you with a driving experience," he said. "It's got 22-inch wheels. It's low-to-the-ground. It's heavy. The CG (center of gravity) and tires make it handle beautifully. It's so much fun to drive. "By contrast,

Today, Tesla CEO Elon Musk now confirmed that the price increase has been postponed until they release Version 10. Smart Summon, also known as Enhanced Summon, builds on Tesla’s previous Summon feature, which was used by owners to move their cars autonomously for a few feet in their driveway or in tight parking situations. With the new version, owners are able to Summon their Tesla vehicles from further away, and the cars will navigate more complex parking environments." https://electrek.co/2019/08/20/tesla-v10-smart-summon-postponed-full-self-driving-price-increase/ 2020 KARMA REVERO GT STARTS FROM $135,000 "Earlier this month, Karma Automotive announced details about the new 2020 Karma Revero GT, which is scheduled for retail deliveries from Q4 2019 on." according to InsideEVs: "The starting price (MSRP) is $135,000, which after destination charge and deducting the $7,500 federal tax credit, is effectively $128,900. 28 kWh battery (instead 21.4 kWh) expected 61 miles (98 km) of all-electric range EPA range (Revero 37 miles EPA) up to 360 miles (579 km) of total range, including up to 80 miles (129 km) electric and up to 280 miles (451 km) with generator 0-60 mph (96.5 km/h) in 4.5 seconds (Revero 5.4 seconds) 1.5L BMW TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder in-line engine (same as in BMW i8) as onboard generator (previously 2L GM engine) dual-motor rear-wheel drive (with torque vectoring for rear wheels)" https://insideevs.com/news/366314/2020-karma-revero-gt-135000/ REALITY CHECK: CHADEMO FAST-CHARGING STATIONS STILL OUTNUMBER CCS ONES "As tallied by the U.S. government’s Alternative Fuels Data Center, you’ll find that even now, in the second half of 2019, there are still more places to fast-charge CHAdeMO vehicles than those with CCS. As of August 20, 2019, there are 2,140 charging stations and 3,010 connectors with CHAdeMO fast charging. CCS still lags behind CHAdeMO in the number of stations by more than 250, while it has about 500 more connectors. And Tesla has 678 Supercharger locations with 6,340 connectors. The Nissan Leaf lineup is the only one still on the market to primarily use the CHAdeMO standard." says Green Car Reports: "Part of the reason why CCS hasn’t gained ground is that, as called out in the Partial Consent Decree of the Volkswagen diesel settlement, Electrify America has to future-proof its stations by operating across different charging standards. Therefore, all public-facing fast chargers will include a CHAdeMO connector—just one, in most cases, running at 50 kw instead of the CCS connectors’ 150kW or 350kW" https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1124639_chademo-fast-charging-stations-still-outnumber-ccs-ones MYSTERIOUS AUDI Q3 TEST MULE SPOTTED WITH CHARGING INLET "Spy photographers recently spotted in southern Europe an Audi Q3 with a charging inlet on the left-front fender, which clearly indicates it's a plug-in test mule." but what IS it, asks InsideEVs: "The question without an answer is whether it's a plug-in hybrid or an all-electric Audi test vehicle. It might herald a Q3 PHEV or a Q3/Q4 e-tron BEV, according to CarPix." https://insideevs.com/news/366367/audi-q3-test-mule-charging-inlet/ TOMTOM BOOSTS ELECTRIC REVOLUTION WITH TOOLS TO BEAT RANGE ANXIETY TomTom, [TOM2] the location technology specialist, today announced the launch of two new APIs for developers to help build applications for electric mobility. The new Long Distance EV Routing API allows users to route from A to B beyond one charge. The routing algorithm, specifically designed to optimize travel time, calculates the route including stops to charge, displaying an estimated arrival time that also considers the charging time. The second new API, EV Charging Stations Availability API, provides information about the availability of the charging stations per plug type, making sure the driver knows before arrival whether a charging point is available for use or not. https://www.tomtom.com/company/press-releases/news/25686/ FIRST 50 ORDERS DELIVERED AS ELECTRIC JCB DIGGER IN FULL PRODUCTION JCB has made manufacturing history by going into full production with the construction industry’s first fully electric mini excavator – with more than 50 machines already delivered. The 19C-1E models - JCB’s first-ever electric diggers - are now coming off the assembly line at JCB Compact Products in Cheadle, Staffordshire, with orders rolling in from customers from across Europe and North America. The machine is a staggering five times quieter than its diesel counterpart and can be fully charged in under two hours. The model is expected to be a big hit with companies working inside buildings and in emissions and noise-sensitive inner-city areas. Fully charged, the 19C-1E can put in a typical full day’s shift for a mini excavator. The 19C-1E will also offer customers great cost-of-ownership benefits, with research highlighting that over the first five years, charging costs will be 50 per cent cheaper for customers who would otherwise be using red diesel. Servicing costs are also expected to be up to 70 per cent lower compared to the diesel model. https://www.jcb.com/en-gb/news/2019/08/first-ever-electric-jcb-diggers-start-to-roll-off-production-line EO CHARGING AND MOIXA CONNECT FOR SMART EV CHARGING "The UK charger manufacturer EO Charging and smart grid firm Moixa are cooperating to create a dedicated smart home battery and solar package for electric vehicles. The system is designed to store renewable energy and to use it to charge the EV." reports electrive: "More specifically, the solution is to integrate an EO Genius EV charger and a 4.8kWh Moixa Smart Battery. The system is then connected to a customer’s solar panels and managed via Moixa’s smart-energy management software GridShare. Chris Wright, CTO at Moixa, stressed that not only will this maximise the use of home-generated solar energy but “at the same time customers will be able to take full advantage of emerging smart tariffs, and benefit from the cheap overnight energy for car charging while covering their household consumption during peak pricing”." https://www.electrive.com/2019/08/21/eo-charging-and-moixa-connect-for-smart-ev-charging/ TESLA’S EUROPEAN DEMAND RUMORS GET BLOWN OUT OF THE WATER "There is a certain predictive quality in looking at the ships Tesla’s has charted to ferry cars to Europe. In the past two quarters, the Europe/China ratio was 50/50, with the European vessels carrying some more cars than the ships bound for China." analyses Clean Technica: ""Now, in this third quarter, the Europe/China ratio is 2/1. Of the first 9 ships planned so far, 6 have been destined for Europe. The first shipload has reached the delivery centers, the second is on quay in Zeebrugge. The third is on the Atlantic, the fourth is nearing the Panama Canal, the fifth is at Pier 80 at San Francisco being loaded, and the sixth is due early next week in port." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/08/21/teslas-european-demand-rumors-get-blown-out-of-the-water/ ⛴ Morten Grove

Welcome to the Martini Minute, this is what's new in the world of luxury: Pininfarina-designed Karma GT will make its US debut at the Monterey Car Week on the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance beginning August 15. The GT is built on the skeleton of Karma Automotive's electric grand tourer, the Revero, which is already in production. Pininfarina did away with the rear doors, and a new, all-electric drivetrain has been installed to power the vehicle.
Show #445 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 16th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. ANDERS HOVE – PATREON EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: “I was listening this morning to your guesses about the pronunciation of AI.ME. Since the concept was released at the Shanghai auto show, and could be intended for China, this is probably a play on words, since "ai" is the verb "to love." It'S pronounced the same as "aye" in "aye aye, captain." So "aye ... me.". Reasons to have Sentry Mode: An email from Brian Thompson. “Willie Singletary, Council Candidate Hits Tesla Model 3 with Escalade and leaves scene.” AUTO SHANGHAI 2019: THE ELECTRIC VEHICLES TO LOOK FORWARD TO "it's no surprise that the Auto Shanghai 2019, which begins on April 16, will have more EVs and EV concepts on display than you can point a finger at. Here's some of the ones that we think will stand out." says Overdrive.in. Their picks are: Possibly of most interest to us is the production version of the Renault K-ZE. As the looks suggest, this will be the electric version of the Renault Kwid. It will be based on a heavily modified version of the Kwid's CMF-A platform and will have a 250 km range. The Buick Velite 6 is a heavily revised version of the second generation Chevrolet Volt. The PHEV version debut first and be powered by the same 1.5 litre petrol motor and 18.4 kWh battery pack. The full EV version is expected to have a 85 kW motor with a claimed range of 291 km." They also rate the NIO EP7 performance sedan, the Audi Q2 etron which is like an electric A2 for China only, the Aston Martin Rapide E and the Geely GE 11 - "the first global model from Geely's newly-created EV brand "Geely New Energy". Internationally it will be available under the Geometry brand. " http://overdrive.in/news-cars-auto/auto-shanghai-2019-the-electric-vehicles-to-look-forward-to/ RENAULT KWID EV (CITY K-ZE) REVEALED AT SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW "Renault has showcased the production version of the Kwid EV at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show. The EV is based on the same CMF-A platform as the Kwid, albeit with a few modifications to accommodate batteries and an electric motor. However the specifications of the same haven't been revealed yet." reports ZigWheels: "while it has not been officially revealed, the City K-ZE will have an approximate range close to 250Km. Inside, the cabin remains largely similar to the Kwid with a functional setup. Key highlights include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which also gets online navigation, real time monitoring for EV features, 4G WiFi and voice recognition. the Renault City K-ZE packs PM2.5 sensors and an air quality control system, which evaluates cabin air quality and switches between interior and exterior air circulation automatically. It also gets features like a rear camera and a tyre pressure monitoring system." https://www.zigwheels.com/news-features/news/renault-kwid-ev-city-kze-revealed-at-shanghai-motor-show/33576/ NEW NIO ET PREVIEW ELECTRIC CAR REVEALED IN SHANGHAI "At the Auto Shanghai 2019, Chinese EV startup NIO showed off its all new sedan product lineup with the ET Preview and exhibited its entire NIO Power service solution as well as some cutting-edge technologies such as the 220kW permanent magnet synchronous motor electric drivetrain." reports Gasgoo for InsideEVs.com "The EV maker also showcased such products as the high-performance electric flagship ES8 SUV; the high-performance long-range, intelligent electric ES6 SUV; the ultrafast electric car, the EP9; the NIO EVE Vision car and NIO Formula E Team car, the NIO 004." https://insideevs.com/new-nio-et-preview-electric-car-revealed/ KARMA DEBUTS BEAUTIFUL PININFARINA DESIGNED ELECTRIC COUPE "Aside from the Karma Revero GT (yes, it’s an updated variant of the Fisker Karma from 2016) which is a production vehicle going on sale soon, Karma Automotive has an interesting two-door concept debuting at the 2019 Auto Shanghai. The so-called Pininfarina GT is based on the Revero GT and, as its name suggests, has been designed by Pininfarina." according to Anthony Karr from Motor1.com: "The official press release says this is the “first result of a partnership with Pininfarina, the iconic Italian design and engineering house,” which hints at potential future products developed in cooperation between the two companies. While the coupe has the exterior dimensions of the Revero GT, the overall appearance is sportier thanks to the shorter rear overhang and the long hood. We believe the two-door vehicle has the same powertrain as the Revero GT, which means there’s a BMW-sourced 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine, an onboard electric generator, and two electric motors for a combined output of 535 horsepower (399 kilowatts) and 550 pound-feet (746 lb-ft) of torque." https://insideevs.com/karma-debuts-pininfarina-electric-coupe/ ELECTRA MECCANICA SHIPS SOLO FROM CHINA TO NORTH AMERICA "Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, Electra Meccanica Vehicle, has signed a contract with Crane Worldwide Logistics to move its single-passenger, three-wheel Solo model from its assembly plant in Chongqing to the ports of Los Angeles in the US and Vancouver, Canada." according to the website Automotive Logistics: "Electra Meccanica is currently ramping up mass production of its Solo electric vehicle at its Chongqing manufacturing facility in China for delivery to customers there and abroad in 2019. According to official figures from the EV maker it has 64,000 pre-orders on its books." https://automotivelogistics.media/news/157291 HYUNDAI & H2E: 1,600 FUEL CELL TRUCKS FOR EUROPE "Hyundai and the Swiss company H2 Energy (H2E) have confirmed their commitment to establishing a joint venture called Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility. The JV’s first goal is to open up the European hydrogen mobility ecosystem with fuel cell trucks." writes Carrie Hamel for electrive.com: "Hyundai will supply a total of 1,600 fuel cell-powered heavy trucks to Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility from 2019 to 2025 – 600 more than originally announced in a memorandum of understanding signed in 2018 between H2E and Hyundai. The Swiss company H2E specialises in the production and supply of renewable hydrogen in Switzerland with subsidiaries in Germany, Norway and Austria and they will be responsible for marketing the fleet." https://www.electrive.com/2019/04/15/hyundai-h2e-1600-fuel-cell-trucks-for-european-market/ MINI SURVEY CLAIMS CUSTOMERS ARE HAPPY WITH 75 MILES OF EV RANGE "In this survey from MINI USA, the brand asked 1,004 adults over the age of 18 (502 men and 502 women) a series of questions to determine what a necessary average range. While the questions asked were not disclosed to us, the brand claims that a resulting average range of 75 miles was deemed “sufficient”." says BMW blog: "MINI also learned from this survey that the majority of customers find EVs to be best used in city driving or for commuting. The latter of which is assuming it’s a relatively short commute. This information is likely to factor into the size of battery packs used in upcoming EV MINIs. The first one to come is the upcoming MINI E, which is said to use the same 42.2 kWh battery pack as the BMW i3 and get around 120 miles of range." https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/04/15/mini-survey-claims-customers-are-happy-with-75-miles-of-ev-range/ TESLA'S CONSTANT PRICE CHANGES FRUSTRATE BUYERS "Last week, Tesla changed the prices on their cars again. In just the last few months there have been a huge number of price changes, particularly on the Model 3" says a Forbes article which goes on to track every price change since, a 12 point list which follows the changing face of Autopilot and the $35,000 Model 3 which came and (partially) went. It's a toughtful article by Brad Templeton and talks about buyers remorse, how cellphones have been commodotised. "Elon Musk has had a few things to say about this. First, he points out that prices on other maker's cars fluctuate all the time due to specials, dealer rebates, and plain old negotiation. He says Tesla is just doing it transparently and should not be blamed for doing the right thing. There is some merit to this, but the fact that somebody can get $3,000 off a car by negotiating at the dealer does not affect the price of existing cars nearly as much. He also points out that Teslas, unlike other cars before them, keep getting new features with software updates, which are given to all owners whose cars can handle them." https://www.forbes.com/sites/bradtempleton/2019/04/15/teslas-constant-price-changes-frustrate-buyers-even-more-is-likely-as-cars-become-computers/#6bba873e5da9 TOYOTA SELLS ELECTRIC CAR TECHNOLOGY TO CHINESE STARTUP IN RETURN FOR GREEN CAR CREDITS "Toyota has agreed to sell its electric car technology to Chinese startup Singulato, in a move which will give it preferential rights to buy green credits under China’s new quota system for electric vehicles (EVs)." according to City AM newspaper: "The green car credit system, introduced in January, requires a significant portion of car makers’ production or imports in China must be electric or hybrid. Those that do not meet the quota themselves can purchase credits from rivals that exceed it, but if they do not have enough credits they face government fines for their operations in China. Singulato is developing a mini EV which it hopes to release later this year. This will generate credits for the startup, some of which Toyota will then purchase. Toyota has already said that initially it won’t be able to meet its quotas without buying credits from others." http://www.cityam.com/276295/toyota-sells-electric-car-technology-chinese-startup-return CHEVY BOLT EUV NAME TRADEMARKED, ELECTRIC CROSSOVER COMING? "An interesting patent filing by General Motors hints the upcoming second electric vehicle from the automaker could be a high-riding machine. First unearthed by GM Authority, the Bolt EUV moniker has been trademarked by GM earlier this month and will be used for “motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles.” says Motor1.com today: "As GM Authority reports, the name is probably going to be used for Chevrolet’s next Bolt-based EV. In March this year, the American manufacturer confirmed it will build the all-electric car at its Orion facility where the Bolt is currently produced. A new $300-million investment in the factory was also confirmed and a plan for approximately 400 new jobs at the site." https://www.motor1.com/news/344658/chevrolet-bolt-euv-trademark-rumors/ WHY TESLA DEFINES AMERICAN LUXURY, NOT CADILLAC OR LINCOLN "Americans are at our best when we look forward instead of at what others are doing. Cadillac and Lincoln used to epitomize this idea." says MotorTrend: "While Cadillac has spent the past three decades copying BMW's homework, and Lincoln spent the same time building cost-cut, rebadged Fords and Mercurys, the soul of American luxury escaped Detroit. Today, it has settled in sunny California. Tesla's tech and engineering is class leading, and delivers benchmark EV performance and range. And the vehicles are (relatively) expensive, requiring early adopters to be of a certain socio-economic status. They have become part of the fabric of today's luxury consumer society, a car many buyers of mainstream automobiles now aspire to own because of what it would say about their own status. Tesla is therefore a genuine modern luxury brand." https://www.motortrend.com/news/why-tesla-defines-american-luxury-not-cadillac-lincoln/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Back in 2011 when the original Fisker Karma was released, seeing it on the road was breathtaking. The vehicle turned heads with its beautiful designs so there was never a problem with looks. The issues for this electric/hybrid car were technical. From breaking down during a Consumer Reports drive to actual customer cars catching fire, it proved too much for the startup automaker and it filed for bankruptcy in November 2013. However, its new Chinese owners believe they have worked out all the problems and are ready to re-commence production of the car. And the man chosen to run Karma Automotive is no stranger to Detroit. Jim Taylor, who formerly ran Cadillac, will now be responsible for selling the Karma 2.0 to the world. Joining John McElroy to talk to Jim about Karma, Cadillac and more will be Joe White for Reuters and Dave Guilford from Automotive News.
