KIA WINS CAR OF THE YEAR AWARDThe KIA EV6 has won the prestigious Car of the Year award, which was announced in Geneva but not whilst the motor show was on due to changes with the event. STELLANTIS EXCEEDS FINANCIAL EXPECTATIONSStellantis announced their financial results, for 2021, which exceeded expectations. Their nett profit, operating income and nett revenues far outpaced 2020, which is to be hoped and expected. All of which makes the announcement that they expect their suppliers to shoulder a bigger slice of the costs for EV tech rather hard to swallow. To read about this, click here for the Autocar article. ASTON MARTIN NARROWS LOSSESIn 2020 Aston Martin loses were £466 million, during 2021 they reduced that figure to £213.8 million. Added to which their revenue was up 79% to £1.1 billion. Aston is hopeful they will deliver between 75 and 90 Valkyries to customers in 2022. The plan is to return to an operating profit in 2022 as well. For more on this, click the YesAuto story here. RENEWED PORSCHE IPO INTEREST FROM VW GROUPThere is renewed talk of a Porsche IPO, with the VW Group to be in ‘advanced discussions' regarding the shape this would take. Some or even many, have questioned why this has not happened before. Some have priced Porsche value at €85 billion, which the VW Group could do with as they push further into EV technology. More on this story can be found by clicking here for the YesAuto article. MORE 50MPH STRETCHES IN WALESIn an effort to tackle pollution, in South Wales, two more sections of roads are being considered for a speed limit of 50mph. As is the norm for WRC, there was much drama and unexpected action. For the third time in his career, Rovanperä won with a very composed and faultless drive. He was pushed until Sunday morning by Evans who had to retire with a hybrid tech issue. This meant that Neuville dragged the Hyundai into second, which is an amazing feat after their showing at Monte Carlo. Esapekka Lappi, on his return to the main event after Mexico last year, rounded out the top and third step for Toyota. It was a forgettable race if you were a fan of M-Sport, with Breen struggling. LUNCHTIME READ: IS PARIS CAR BAN A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME?Jim Holder has written an interesting article about Paris's plans to deal with congestion and help clean up their air. However, he has also asked if this is something that others will adopt and use in their cities, such as in the UK. We have already seen some implementations of CAZ that have been less well thought out than in other locations. This is an important topic and we all need to be thinking and discussing it or we'll get lumped with systems that make everyone's lives harder. To read the Autocar piece, click here. Artificial Intelligence used to be the stuff of fantasy movies and comics. Now it's a part of every industry and everyday life. Our use of it is only going to increase in the future as AI becomes more and more intertwined with our day-to-day activities and industries recognise it's boundless potential. However, so far the finance sector has lagged in terms of uptake compared to other industries. Harish Sundaresh joins to discuss the adoption of AI in the finance sector, drawing on comparisons with the healthcare and transport sectors to argue for its benefits while warning of its pitfalls. Harish is leading the development and management of quantitative trading strategies in the multi-asset space at Loomis Sayles and Director of the firm's Factor-Based Investment Group. These last few months have really been something for me. I think the best way to describe it is as a total reset. All of the hard lessons learned over the last year and a half, plus all of the great stuff too, all put back together in a new package, and with that, the show's finally back. And with a bang because Chad's here, and I've got a great reading from one of my favorite magazines that sums up “Enthusiasm” better than I ever could. So, while I was “away” I actually got a lot of feedback and emails and even a few new patrons too. And we're going to get right to that. But first, the elephant in the room. No, I'm not at Oshkosh. I actually did plan to go, even managed to get the week off, but this summer, for whatever reason, I felt the need to be home and getting things back on track more than ever. And I'm glad I did, because a lot actually transpired over this last week of July I was glad to be home for.Including making this Episode!Let's welcome our new Patrons: Scott Sutton and Christian! And special thanks to those individuals who sent in their thoughts:David BonniciDanlel SternberghEvan Schoo"Lima Hotel"Katherine StaffordGlen TowlerAnd extra special thanks to Daniel Switkin for the inspirational topic! And to Gavin Green at CAR Magazine for writing such a wonderful piece about enthusiasm. CHIP SHORTAGE TO LAST INTO 2023The automotive chip shortage is expected to last into late 2022 and even 2023 according to some semi conductor manufacturers. This will add pressure to OEMs already trying to recover from a year of lockdowns across global markets. To read more, click The Register article here. There is some good news, though, with the Japanese factory that was damaged in a fire is expected to be back at full capacity by the middle of May. To read about the remarkable recovery, click here for The Registry article. RICHARD PARRY-JONES HAS PASSED AWAYFollowing a tragic accident on his farm, Richard Parry-Jones has passed away. He was the man heralded as turning modern Fords into enjoyable, fun driving cars rather than just cost-conscious boxes. Many throughout the industry have shared stories and their deep admiration and respect of both what he achieved and who he was as a person. To read more, click the TopGear article here. NEW NEW CAR NEWSDue to the Shanghai Motor Show taking place this week and that being the first mass gathering of manufactuers, in the world, for over a year, news is thing on the ground. This week we’ve moved the New New Car News segment to the first part of the show, as a result. DS 9 - DS announced their new flagship model, the DS 9, a premium saloon, which has a very DS interior that the chaps are all excited to see. The external looks are less dramatic but still handsome. However, they do wonder who in the UK may buy such a car. To read more about it, click the Automotive Management article here. Toyota bZ4X Concept - Toyota has revealed their first every purely battery electric concept, which is a sporty looking SUV, that shows it is different whilst still obviously a Toyota. The driver is in for a real treat in this thinly disguised production ready model, as they has a new design wheel, drive-by-wire system and display binnacle. To read more, click here for the Toyota press release. Nissan X-TRAIL - The next generation X-TRAIL has been revealed by Nissan. Externally it continues the brand design language that we’ve seen on the latest Juke and Quashqai. The X-TRAIL will take advantage of the clever e-POWER system, that has the petrol engine charging a battery, when needed, which powers the electric motors to drive the car. To read more, click the Nissan press release here. Audi A6 e-tron Concept - Audi has revealed their latest concept, an all electric A6, which has been designed to be very aerodynamic, fast charging and a range of up to 700km. To read more, click here for the Audi press release.Genesis EV G80 - Genesis has shown off their electric flagship model, the G80. The technology will be shared from other Hyundai Group vehicles, allowing for a good 300-ish mile range, quick charge ability and a lovely charging port cover which is integrated neatly into the front grille. To read more, click the Autocar article here. Mercedes EQS - Mercedes has taken the wraps off their first luxury EV only model, the EQS. There are some incredibly impressive technical features to this vehicle, but one price is the weight due to the amount of batteries required to allow for a 711km range. Much is made of the quietness within the cabin, as this is the EV equivalent of the S Class, just how quiet can it be? To find out more, click here for the Mercedes press release. Geely - As the Shanghai Motor Show is a home show, Geely was ut in force with many of the group’s brands attending. The new plug-in hybrid version of the Lynk & Co 05 and the Volvo XC40 were shown. But also they made announcements which were interesting. To find out more, click here for the Geely press release.Hyundai Pony EV Concept - This was not at Shanghai but we still need to mention this gorgeous looking repagination of the Pony for the electric age. The changes are very subtle but superb, with lights and a clean look to the original Giugiaro design. The interior is a place of wonder, mixing minimalism with superb details and finishes. Jonny Smith of The Late Brake Show on YouTube has done quite a bit in his automotive career. From co-hosting the UK automotive program Fifth Gear, to Mud Sweat and Gears on BBC America, to writing for such publications as Car Magazine and Classic Car, Jonny has seemingly done it all. As an enthusiast of electric vehicles, Jonny also built and held the record for the worlds quickest electric car in a highly modified 1974 Enfield E8000 that was dubbed “Jonny’s Flux Capacitor”. But make no mistake, this man doesn’t live on electricity alone, as a wickedly cool 1968 Dodge Charger complete with a 383 cubic inch big-block and 4-speed also resides in his garage. On this week’s Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ, we pull an obscure 1987 Owosso Pulse Litestar from our classifieds and then talk to Jonny about his career, his new show and the future of automobiles.
An eye opening insight. Matt Bishop is a fascinating character. He has an enviabe CV which boasts the W Series, the McLaren F1 Team, Car Magazine and F1 Racing Magazine where he fundamentally changed the face of Formula One journalism. He's a supporter of LGBTQ+ inclusion, diversity and discussion in motorsport and is now an author, having written his own booked called "The Boy Made the Difference". We had an incredible chat about his life and career, including his experiences with the likes of Lewis Hamilton and his former boss, Ron Dennis. On today’s podcast: VW plans to sell 500,000 ID.4 electric cars per year Electrify America Introduces New Pricing Structure Rimac to acquire Bugatti Electric Ford F-150 Will Be Dual Motor Tesla Will Soon Start HW3 Retrofit for Model 3 in Europe Tesla is quietly building a mammoth Supercharger LG Chem to spin off battery unit amid rising EV demand Plug-in hybrids are a 'wolf in sheep's clothing' Chevy Bolt Becomes Tiny Electric Van Show #891 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 17th September 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. VW PLANS TO SELL 500,000 ID.4 ELECTRIC CARS PER YEAR "VW is hyping the launch of the ID.4 electric SUV coming next week with new releases, and in a new interview with executives today, the automaker said that it plans to sell 500,000 ID.4 vehicles per year. Now Volkswagen has released an interview with Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of the brand, and Thomas Ulbrich, member of the Board of Management responsible for e-mobility, talking about the ID.4. In the interview, Brandstätter said that VW plans to sell 1.5 million electric cars per year by 2025, and they aim for ID.4 to account for ~500,000 of those sales" writes electrek: "Volkswagen is going to fully unveil the ID.4 next week, and deliveries are expected to start in the coming weeks." VW said: "Volkswagen wants to become the world market leader in e-mobility — but that won’t happen by itself. The Volkswagen brand is therefore investing around 11 billion euros by 2024. As a compact SUV, the ID.4 has, in our view, the best prerequisites for being successful in a large scale in all important markets. We therefore expect the Volkswagen brand to produce a total of 1.5 million e-cars per year by 2025. And the ID.4 is likely to account for around a third of this. The ID.4 will thus become the driving force behind our reorientation a hundred thousand times over." https://electrek.co/2020/09/17/vw-plans-sell-id-4-electric-cars-per-year/ ELECTRIFY AMERICA INTRODUCES NEW PRICING STRUCTURE Electrify America today introduced a new pricing structure designed to provide electric vehicle (EV) owners with consistent and transparent rates across its public brand-neutral fast-charging network. Customers will now experience more competitive rates and overall savings in most cases as Electrify America now offers kilowatt-hour (kWh) pricing, depending upon the state where the EV is charged. Plus, all session fees have been eliminated. Electrify America will now charge customers in 23 states plus the District of Columbia by the kilowatt-hour. This update reflects a growing preference by EV drivers for kWh pricing, which bills customers by the quantity of energy they use to charge their vehicle, similar to gas station pricing on a per-gallon basis. More than 78 percent of charging on the Electrify America network takes place in states where kWh pricing will be implemented. Rates start at $0.31 per kilowatt hour. For complete details, visit electrifyamerica.com/pricing. In the remaining states where the company operates, Electrify America will continue to offer pricing on a per-minute basis with customers billed for the time spent charging. https://media.electrifyamerica.com/en-us/releases/111 RIMAC TO ACQUIRE BUGATTI "VW Group is on the verge of offloading Bugatti to Croatian electromobility powerhouse Rimac Automobili. Bugatti – the luxury brand best known for today's 16-cylinder hypercars and its pre-WWII automotive masterpieces – will likely be transferred to Rimac via Porsche, in exchange for a bigger share in Europe's answer to Tesla. Sources say VW executives approved the deal last week, but it has yet to be signed off by the supervisory board." says Car Magazine in an exclusive report: "Volkswagen Group no longer wants to lavish money and manpower on the so-called hobby brands acquired by the former CEO. Instead, all resources must be devoted to fund the massive investment programme in the future of motoring – electrification, digitalisation and autonomous driving. If the future of motoring is electric – not 1500hp petrol-powered hypercars that sell in the hundreds – then getting their hooks further into Rimac, a company with a reputation for stellar EV tech, sounds very beneficial indeed. Back in 2018, Porsche acquired a ten per cent share in Rimac Automobili. In 2019, they bought another 5.5 per cent. By doing so, Porsche is in good company: other investors include Hyundai, Jaguar, Koenigsegg and Magna. Indeed when CAR visited earlier this year, founder Mate Rimac counted 15 car companies using its tech know-how. Rimac isn’t yet publicly traded, with the founder holding a 51 per cent majority interest. But there is an enormous buzz around the company – the last funding round pegged its value north of £500m. " And: "And, as reported in CAR's August 2020 issue, the Wolfsburg grapevine repeats that Bugatti may not be the only brand set to depart VW for new hunting grounds. Also under investigation are – in this order – Lamborghini, Seat (to be repositioned by merging with Cupra which is due to become the lead marque), Ital Design, Bentley and Ducati" https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/industry-news/bugatti/vw-group-rimac/ Subscribe to CAR Magazine here: https://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/car-magazine ELECTRIC FORD F-150 WILL BE DUAL MOTOR "Ford announced on Thursday that it would be investing upwards of $700 million in a new facility at its Rouge vehicle assembly complex to build the forthcoming electric F-150. The construction should add 300 jobs, Ford said, which will focus on battery assembly and producing both the electric F-150 and the F-150 PowerBoost hybrid." says CNET. And: "The new all-electric Ford F-150 will also feature a“giant front trunk” to secure important cargo and deliver a safer vehicle. Considering it will still be an F-150, the fact that it is originally conceived to be a combustion-engined vehicle may impose some compromises on the battery-powered pickup truck. Having a battery pack will allow it to provide “more than 40 percent savings for its lifetime total cost of operation” compared to the ICE F-150. Updates will also be made over the air, like any Tesla already does since September 2012." according to InsideEVs. https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/ford-f150-electric-pickup-truck/ https://insideevs.com/news/444407/all-electric-ford-f-150-mid-2022/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles TESLA WILL SOON START HW3 RETROFIT FOR MODEL 3 IN EUROPE "Tesla will soon begin hardware 3.0 upgrades for Model 3 in Europe. This initiative is another sign of Tesla's commitment to expanding its Full Self-Driving functionality rollout, which is expected to reach full-scale in the near future. The HW3 retrofit will be available for electric vehicles equipped with HW2 and HW2.5, whose owners have purchased the company's Full Self-Driving package. The new computer (HW3) has been installed in all new Model S and Model X vehicles since March 2019 and in all new Model 3 vehicles produced since April of that year." reports Tesmanian: "For now, owners from regions such as Europe and Australia have not yet received the promised HW3 block. But this situation may soon change. A Model 3 owner from Europe asked Tesla CEO Elon Musk when the company will begin retrofitting Model 3 hardware in Europe. Musk replied that this should happen soon." https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-will-start-hw3-retrofit-for-model-3-in-europe-soon-says-elon-musk TESLA IS QUIETLY BUILDING A MAMMOTH SUPERCHARGER "As noted recently by Tesla enthusiast @bryanMackSC, he recently came across a Supercharger station that’s currently under construction in Firebaugh, California. The site seemed to be fairly new, as even trackers like supercharge.info did not list the site until very recently. What is rather interesting was that the Supercharger in question had over 50 stalls, making it notably larger than the Kettleman site, which is already one of the largest in the world. " says TEslarati: "It did not take long before fellow Tesla enthusiast @MontrealTesla, who tracks updates to the Supercharger Network, was able to retrieve filings for the Firebaugh site. As it turned out, the site will host 56 Tesla Superchargers, and it will be in the same vicinity as a full-fledged restaurant and convenience store. " https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-worlds-largest-supercharger-restaurant-pictures/ LG CHEM TO SPIN OFF BATTERY UNIT AMID RISING EV DEMAND "LG Chem is to spin off its battery business in December, seeking to capitalize on rising interest in the sector as global demand for electric vehicles rises. The South Korean company said on Thursday that its board had approved the plan for a new subsidiary, tentatively named LG Energy Solution. The decision is subject to shareholder approval at a general meeting scheduled for Oct. 30." reports Nikkei.coM: "Projected battery demand from EVs produced in Europe is more than five times the volume of currently confirmed battery projects in Europe, according to McKinsey. LG Chem is a leading player in the EV battery market, accounting for one-quarter of market share. The company supplies many global automakers including Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors, GM, Ford, Volkswagen, Renault and Volvo." LG CHem said: ""This is the right time for the spinoff as the battery industry is growing rapidly and profits from the EV battery sector are increasing. With the spinoff we can focus on a specialized business sector as well as improve efficiency in management, boosting values for the company and shareholders." https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/LG-Chem-to-spin-off-battery-unit-amid-rising-EV-demand PLUG-IN HYBRIDS ARE A 'WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING' "Carbon dioxide emissions from plug-in hybrid cars are as much as two-and-a-half times higher than official tests suggest, according to new research. But analysis from pressure groups Transport and Environment and Greenpeace suggest they emit an average of 120g of CO2 per km. That compares with the 44g per km in official "lab" tests" reports the BBC: "The new research is published as the government considers whether to bring forward a proposed ban on the sale of new petrol, diesel and conventional hybrid cars from 2035 to 2030. The BBC understands one suggestion is that plug-in hybrids should be given a stay of execution, with new sales allowed to continue until 2035. That's because they can offer a 20- to 40-mile range as a purely electric vehicle and are therefore potentially significantly less polluting than other vehicles. But this new analysis from Transport and Environment and Greenpeace suggests they don't offer anything like the carbon dioxide savings claimed for them by manufacturers. The motor industry acknowledges that lab tests don't always reflect real-world use but criticised the report, saying it uses emissions data from a test that is two years old." Rebecca Newsom, Greenpeacve head of politics: "They may seem a much more environmentally friendly choice, but false claims of lower emissions are a ploy by car manufacturers to go on producing SUVs and petrol and diesel engines." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-54170207 CHEVY BOLT BECOMES TINY ELECTRIC VAN " if you’re willing to sacrifice the rear seats entirely, you may be able to get a Chevy Bolt that has plenty of cargo space. A commercial version of the Bolt can be ordered with a Rear Seat Delete Package, which increases the Bolt’s nominal cargo capacity from 56.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded to 66 cubic feet, and greatly increases its usefulness by providing a flat loading floor." says ChargedEVs: "As GM points out, this gives you more usable cargo space than many an SUV, including the Chevy Equinox. This version of the Bolt can only be ordered through GM’s fleet sales program. It’s unclear how, or whether, an individual can go about buying one" https://chargedevs.com/newswire/rear-seat-delete-option-converts-the-chevy-bolt-to-a-tiny-electric-van/ You can listen to all 892 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. 2024 BMW M5 RUMOURED TO GO ELECTRIC AND OFFER BUGATTI VEYRON POWER "Now that we know the full scoop on the updated BMW 5 Series, which was finally revealed and shown to the public just a few days ago, enthusiasts are still waiting on the performance version of BMWs seventh-generation midsize saloon, the BMW M5. While it was teased on Instagram by Markus Falsch himself with a reveal supposedly to come in the following weeks, the future of the M5 seems to be electrified." Reports Motor1.com: "According to a source that Car Magazine stumbled upon, expect the next-generation M5 to be packing serious power via electric motors. Internal documents and some guesswork say that the PHEV will be using the same engine in the upcoming X8 M; a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 with an electric motor that has a combined output of 750 bhp. The M5 full-electric will be powered by Gen V pouch-type batteries, with Car Magazine noting that they could switch to Tesla-style round cells for stability, safety, and added performance. The energy cell is supposedly rated at 135kWh and can be hooked up to a 400V charger that can accommodate up to 350kW. It is also likely that BMW will upgrade to an 800V charger like the one by Porsche and the Taycan. With a maximum projected WLTP range of 435 miles, total power is suggested at 1006 bhp in total with a 0-62mph of just 2.9 seconds." 350kW on a 400v battery would be something around 875 amps - I don't believe it. https://sg.news.yahoo.com/2024-bmw-m5-rumoured-electric-163000021.html CUMULATIVE NUMBER OF NIO POWER BATTERY SWAPS REACHES 500,000 "On May 25, NIO reached a milestone of 500,000 cumulative EV battery swaps in China by its ES6 and ES8 cars. The first NIO Power battery swap station was opened on May 20, 2018 so it’s basically two years. For comparison, the number of cumulative NIO car sales are over 38,900." Says Highway Tale: "Over those two years, NIO installed a total of 131 stations (as of May 20) in 58 cities and plans to add some 50 more in 2020 to enhance long-distance travel. Not all of the close to 40,000 NIO drivers are using battery swap – some did not need to use it, while others might be in areas without battery swap stations. According to data from March, 48.7% of all cars sold at least once used the station. All NIO vehicles are enabled to use the swap stations and the station offers both pack capacities – 70 kWh and 84 kWh. Soon there will be also a 100 kWh pack option. NIO is also developing and 2nd generation of battery swap stations, which will not require the vehicles to be lifted up. It should be simpler, more reliable and cheaper, as well as save time for users. NIO encourages its customers to schedule the battery swapping, so you are assured of a set time, and won’t have to wait for other cars that may have arrived before you. https://highwaytale.com/car-reviews/cumulative-number-of-nio-power-battery-swaps-reaches-500000-2/ RENAULT COULD MAKE ALPINE GO ELECTRIC-ONLY TO SAVE THE BRAND: REPORT "It was distressing to hear that Renault’s Dieppe plant, home to sportscar sub-brand Alpine, will likely be closed as the french Automaker attempts to right itself after the impact of the pandemic on business. We thought that closure would once again be the end of Alpine, but apparently there’s still hope." Reports Jalopnik: "According to a report from Autocar, Alpine may actually survive the tumult despite some initial reports to the contrary, but when it emerges it could be looking at an all-electric future. It’s not totally set in stone yet, though. Autocar explains that the brand’s fate will only be decided once new Renault CEO Luca di Meo begins his tenure in July. Total electrification will certainly a price to pay for a sports car brand that has long traded on simplicity and low curb weight, but I think it’ll be worth it. lpine needs to sell more cars than it currently does. The benchmark goal of 6000 units per year that Renault set for the brand three years ago has been impossible to reach thus far with fewer than 4500 units moved last year. Renault has proven that the company is serious about making electric cars work, even if unorthodox approaches might be necessary to get there. On the other side of things, it’s clear that electric sports cars can work too. Between Tesla’s Ludicrous Mode, Volkswagen’s i.D. R racecar, and plenty of other examples, the prospects for electric sports cars are really good." https://jalopnik.com/renault-could-make-alpine-go-electric-only-to-save-the-1843794070 GERMAN MINISTRY PROPOSES €5 BILLION CAR BONUS SCHEME "Germany's Ministry of Economics has proposed a 5 billion euro (£4.5 billion) buyer bonus scheme as part of an impending stimulus package in an effort to boost car sales, two people close to the matter said on Sunday." According to Yahoo! News: "The heads of the co-governing Social Democrats (SPD) and Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) are expected to present the overall stimulus package on Tuesday, which could total up to 80 billion euros, according to one media report. The economy ministry's proposal is for purchase premiums to be paid to buyers of electric vehicles and conventionally powered cars worth less than 77,350 euros each, with the scheme expiring at the end of the year, the sources said. The economy ministry's plans foresee a basic premium of 2,500 euros per car, which would be topped up by 500 euros for fuel-efficient vehicles. Existing incentive programmes would be increased by 1,500 euros for electric cars and 750 euros for hybrids. A slew of policymakers and industry groups have spoken out against premiums for car purchases, arguing that the stimulus programme should adhere to climate-change policies and not favour a single industry." https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/german-ministry-proposes-5-billion-172933074.html QOTW ANSWERS PODBEAN LISTENER! Ordered the Tesla cyber truck but I haven't got a clue what I'm gonna do with it living in suburban Chislehurst going to be fairly large! HOWARD ANTHONY SMITH via PATREON I realize you live in a country that does not have a pickup truck culture. I grew up in the western part of the United States where pickup trucks were pretty much a necessity. For example, we did not have a paved road for many years. There are still some locations where the road surfaces still need to be regularly grated and tire ruts need to be filled in with gravel. It is from those experiences that truck were outfitted with gear to handle all challenges. All trucks needed protected storage, extended range, spare tires, a heavy lift jack, all terrain tires, camping equipment, and comfortable bench seats. I had dreamed of an all electric pickup from Ford for years...until I saw the Rivian. Then I saw the price tag and went back into dreaming mode. My current pickup truck of choice is the Tesla Cybertruck. It has everything I want plus it wins top trumps against most sports cars. Also, I have a reservation for one. It is going to work great with our off grid travel trailer. RAJEEV NARAYAN The ideal specs of an electric pickup truck are those that would entice these truck buyers who are largely EVs naïve. Currently, the top selling trucks in America is the Ford F -series. Chief among them is the F-150. The Ford F-150 XL starts at $28,700 which is too cheap right now for an EV to compete with, but on the higher end- the Lariat and King Ranch sell for $45K to upwards of $60K. An electric Pickup truck with aggressive styling, similar price, all wheel drive, a Range of around 450 miles and a 0-60 of 5 seconds or less with a towing capacity of around 10,000 lbs, will do well. DAVID NYE Great range, and charging network. Great towing capacity (to tow my 3 tonne caravan with ease). Great technology including autopilot capabilities. Great comfort for at least four or five people. Great safety, including both primary AND secondary safety. Great “toughness”, including being able to cop door dings in the carpark (and maybe even sledgehammer blows:-) without significant damage. Cutting edge design. Reasonable affordability. NIGEL BAKER It should have a lift-gate fitted as standard so it can fulfill its description. MARTY YOUNG Regarding desired specs for an electric pickup truck, it all boils down to one thing...range...lots and lots of range...more range than may seem reasonable at first glance! Why? Because many people buy a pickup truck for one reason - to tow things: boats, campers, and trailers of all types. And towing even a medium-sized camper will reduce your range by at least half! So for an EV pickup to be taken seriously by typical truck buyers, it will need a listed range of at least 500 or 600 miles so it can reliably travel a couple hundred miles between charges while towing. AJ TARQUINO How about Tesla offering the option of a small refrigerator to their cyber truck and installing a permanent one in the back or in the frunk ?? This would be grand and I, for one, would want one... Think of the advantage of buying groceries that need to stay cold or frozen on the drive back home. This would make a huge convince of not having to say “I have to hurry and get home, I have ice cream that I don’t want to melt !!” What about using one for camping or overnight stays !! Their 110/220 volts are already there, making it simple to add a unit to keep a cold beverage available and not have to depend on the use of a cooler or the use melting ice. I hate the sound of the word ‘ice’ because the same letters represents inefficient gobbling fossil fuel automobiles as I ‘am’ a promoter of electric vehicles. JASON HARPER I’m trying as hard as I can to convince my wife to plan for a Cybertruck versus a Model Y for our next vehicle. My reasoning is it’s the same price, but has many more uses. It seats the same number of people, it has more storage, it has open air storage for transporting furniture, we can go camping with it, we can tow a trailer with it if needed, etc. etc. Plus, I kinda like turning heads when I drive (I currently drive a BMW i3, which is a rare site in Tennessee.) Show #758 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 24rd April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. 70% Of Americans Have Never Been In An EV "Despite all of the hype behind Tesla and the introduction of more affordable electric vehicles like the Hyundai Kona EV and the Chevrolet Bolt EV, the majority of consumers still haven’t been in an electric car. According to a recent J.D. Power study, 70% of Americans have never been in a vehicle that runs on electricity. Additionally, 30% know nothing about them. With automakers pouring millions into developing new EVs, it’s surprising to hear." says Cars Direct: "J.D. Power’s study revealed that the number of available charging stations, a lack of overall driving range, and price remain the three main factors holding electric vehicles back for American consumers. Fun fact, these were the same three barriers when J.D. Power studied consumer interest in EVs back in 1997. It’s been 23 years and consumers still have the same concerns." https://www.carsdirect.com/automotive-news/70-of-americans-have-never-been-in-an-ev-study The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet "Ford Performance is apparently still testing its prototype 1,400 horsepower, 1,100 lb-ft, all-electric Ford Mustang CobraJet 1400 drag car before it hits the drag strip later this year" reports Jalopnik: "The Blue Oval worked with inverter and motor supplier Cascadia, software and motor calibration/controls team at AEM EV, the chassis development team at Watson Engineering, and the vehicle builder/integrator/tuner MLe Racecars to come up with this Mustang Cobra Jet 1400. Details are scarce and even the performance figures are only “projected” right now. Those include a quarter mile time in the “low-8-second range” at over 170 mph, and output of 1,400 HP and 1,100 lb-ft of torque." https://jalopnik.com/the-ford-mustang-cobra-jet-1400-is-a-1-400-hp-electric-1843020112 Porsche To Expand Taycan Line With Smaller Battery RWD Version "According to Car Magazine, Porsche is working on a lower-cost 2 wheel drive version of their Taycan all-electric sports car.Porsche already has three Taycan models, the Taycan Turbo, the Taycan Turbo S, and the latest release, the Taycan 4S. " writes Tom for InsideEVs: " the Taycan 4S comes standard with a 79.2 kWh battery with the 93.4 battery pack available as an option called "Performance Battery Plus". That option will add an additional $6,580 to the Taycan 4S's starting price of $103,800, next to the starting prices of the Taycan Turbo ($150,900) and the Taycan Turbo S ($185,000). We still don't know the range of the 79.2 kWh battery pack because it hasn't been certified yet. However, based on the EPA range ratings for the 93.4 kWh pack, (192 mi for Turbo S, 201 mi for Turbo & 203 mi for 4S) we'd expect the 79.2 kWh battery to be somewhere in the 175-mile range." If the price started at $89k and left 10K for options to being it less than 100k, would you be tempted? Someone asked if they're watering down the line too much. And in the comments they pointed to the fossil range of Porsche: "The 911 on the other hand is ridiculous. The 991 generation had the standard Carrera, S, 4, 4S, GTS, 4 GTS, GT3, GT3RS, Speedster, Turbo, Turbo S, GT2RS. Plus, some models also came as cabriolet or Targa, plus most offered both a 7 speed manual and the PDK." https://insideevs.com/news/414686/porsche-offers-less-expensive-2wd-taycan/ Kia electric car: 300-mile range, 20-minute fast-charging "[Kia is] bringing two new models that hadn’t before been confirmed for the U.S. The first is a dedicated PHEV—which we take to mean that it’s not offered in any non-plug-in form—coming to the U.S. at the end of this year. The second is Kia’s first dedicated EV, set to arrive at the end of 2021 for the U.S., although it might show up before then for other markets, such as Europe." says Green Car Reports: "That EV due late next year will be designed and engineered on a much-anticipated E-GMP dedicated EV platform shared with Hyundai. Under development since 2017 or earlier, it should allow a big improvement to design and proportions, and potentially interior space, by nixing the need to plan for an internal combustion engine, and is likely to have an 800-volt basis." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127938_kia-electric-car-300-mile-range-20-minute-fast-charging-arriving-by-late-2021 Tesla Model Y teardown reveals beautiful mega casting manufacturing breakthrough "The Tesla Model Y teardown is starting to reveal the beautiful mega casting on the rear of the electric SUV, which could be a great manufacturing breakthrough." says electrek reporting on Sandy Munro's analysis: "The manufacturing expert also said that Musk confirmed that the already huge casting part is going to be bigger as they are going to combined the two main parts that make the rear of the Model Y into one giant part: Tesla has ordered the world’s biggest casting machines in order to build those parts. They are as big as a house and weigh 5,500 tons. He also noted some parts of the rear casting that are not used and he speculated that it might be for an air suspension retrofit: We have seen a lot of evidence leading to Tesla planning an air suspension for Model 3 and Model Y, but Musk insists that it’s not in the plans." https://electrek.co/2020/04/24/tesla-model-y-teardown-mega-casting-manufacturing-breakthrough/ Tesla Model S and Model X get free acceleration and endurance boost in new update "Just a few days ago, Tesla updated its online configurator for the Raven Model S and Model X Performance to reflect the flagship vehicles’ improved acceleration figures. While already blazingly-quick, the Raven Model S Performance’s 0-60 mph time was reduced to 2.3 seconds, while the Raven Model X was improved to just 2.6 seconds." reports Teslarati: "It appears that existing owners of the Raven Model S and Model X Performance are set to receive the acceleration boost update as well. A recent post from Tesla owner and noted YouTube tech reviewer Marques Brownlee revealed that faster acceleration is not all that Model S owners will be receiving. More endurance for back to back full power launches are also included in the over-the-air update, on top of the vehicle’s new “Cheetah Stance” Launch Mode." Host Tom Appel and co-host Damon Bell start the show by discussing the recent news that TEN Publishing is discontinuing the print editions of 19 car magazines, including Automobile and Truck Trend. Next, we talk about the 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Touring, one of our Consumer Guide test-fleet vehicles this week. Harvey Briggs, Editor and Publisher of Rides & Drives (ridesanddrives.com), calls in for an interview on his days in the automotive advertising industry and the creation of Chevrolet's well-remembered "Heartbeat of America" and "Like a Rock" campaigns. Damon gives a run-down of the articles posted this week on The Daily Drive blog (including a First Look at the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban), and Tom gleefully annoys Damon with a pop quiz on automobile/movie-title puns. We wrap up the show with a quick reminiscence of our favorite car magazines when we were young.

Show #531 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 17th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Spotify is back – WOOP! PORSCHE TAYCAN SPECS "A recent review of a Taycan Turbo pre-production prototype suggests that the top-tier variant of Porsche’s electric car could live up to its name" reports Simon at Teslarati: "Equipped with a 96 kWh lithium-ion battery that weighs 650 kg , a 215 bhp motor on the front axle, and a 402 bhp motor at the rear. That’s enough to propel the car from a dead stop to 60 mph in just over 3 seconds and into 124 mph in less than 10 seconds. Porsche notes that the Taycan can perform ten full-throttle 0-62 mph and four 0-124 mph launches without seeing a decrease in performance. When the Taycan gets released later this year, for example, the vehicle will be capable of charging up to 250 kW at an 800-volt charging point. The car is compatible with 350 kW charging, but that would come by 2021 at the latest. And from InsideEVs who noted that CAR Magazine got the specs whilst at Goodwood Festival Of Speed: Base Taycan - with 80 kWh battery and RWD (two motor choices of 322 bhp or 376 bhp) priced at low $90,000. mid-range Taycan Carerra 4S - with 96 kWh battery and AWD (power output of 429 bhp or 483 bhp), priced at high $90,000. TOYOTA AND CATL ENTER A SERIES OF COLLABORATIONS "Toyota has just announced the cornerstones of a comprehensive battery collaboration with Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL). This includes not only a “stable” supply of CATL batteries for Toyota but also the development of new battery technologies and more." reports electrive: "Apart from battery cell supply and development, the deal also foresees the improvement of product quality and the recycling of used batteries. Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd. is not only one of China’s most important battery producers; with a share of around 16 per cent, CATL became the market leader for electric car batteries worldwide in 2017. Now Polestar has confirmed that the performance package will include Brembo brakes, Öhlins shock absorbers, 20-inch forged alloy wheels, and unspecified grippier tires. It will also include some eye-catching trim, including body adornments and apparently yellow seat belts. The launch edition of the Polestar 2 is expected to sell for $63,000, though even that may not have all the elements of the performance package. The Tesla Model 3 Performance starts at $56,190 with delivery. The price of the Polestar 2 Performance Package hasn't been set, but the company is reportedly targeting a price of about $5,000. Both will include all-wheel drive. It is expected to have a 78-kwh battery and Polestar is targeting a 275-mile EPA range rating." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1124041_polestar-2-performance-package-cues-tesla-model-3-rivalry 16% OF GLOBAL EV BATTERY CAPACITY IN MAY WENT TO TESLA MODEL 3 "a report from Adamas Intelligence says that 16 percent of EV battery packs globally produced last May were destined to Model 3 cars." according to InsideEVS: "The second car with the most demand for batteries got 4 percent of them. They went to the BYD Yuan. The Nissan Leaf is in the fifth position, with 3 percent of all EV battery packs produced in May. Speaking of Tesla, if we add the demand the Tesla Model S and the Model X have for battery packs, the American EV manufacturer is responsible for 22 percent of all global deployments in May." Whilst Green Car Congress says: "From January through May of this year, mor than 7 GWh of battery capacity was deployed globally in Tesla EVs. Inferring from the company’s strong Q3/Q4 sales record, Tesla is conservatively on track to exceed 20 GWh deployed by 2019 year-end, Adamas says." https://insideevs.com/news/360161/16-percent-batteries-model-3/ INTERVIEW: ELON MUSK REFLECTS ON SIGNIFICANCE OF TESLA MODEL S "To celebrate MotorTrend's 70th Anniversary, the editorial staff put together an "Ultimate" Car of the Year story to determine the most significant vehicle of the past 70 years. The following are excerpts from a video interview of Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk at Tesla's design studio, in Hawthorne, California." [clips - standing in front of the original Model S design car, why the large screen, why other car maker haven't made a better EV yet] https://www.motortrend.com/news/tesla-elon-musk-interview/ TESLA GIGAFACTORY 3 READY BY END OF YEAR "Morgan Stanley sent a team of analysts to China, and their estimates for the new plant's success are pretty good -- though not as optimistic as Elon's." says RoadShow by CNET: "The cars being built in that time wouldn't be like the cars from the company's Fremont factory, though. Instead, they'd be built from what are called complete knockdown kits or partial knockdown kits. This means that the cars are partially assembled elsewhere and Shanghai would be responsible for final assembly. Morgan Stanley's team estimates that Tesla's Shanghai facility should be able to produce 35,000 to 40,000 vehicles in 2020 and that number could increase to as many as 60,000 cars in 2021. Elon Musk's estimates for production in China are predictably more grand, with his estimates placing the figure somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 Model 3s per year by the end of 2019." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-gigafactory-3-china-shanghai-production-morgan-stanley/ SAN FRANCISCO DECIDES TO HAVE EMISSION-FREE TRANSPORTATION BY 2040 San Francisco just disclosed plans to ban combustion-engined vehicles by 2040. To inspire near term action and reduce emissions quickly, the EV Roadmap sets interim targets for 2025 and 2030. However it is necessary to give carmakers and customers time to adapt. This is why San Francisco says in its “Proposed Electric Vehicle Roadmap for San Francisco” it will have “Interim Targets” for reaching its goals. "These targets aim to rapidly electrify vehicle miles traveled (VMT) while reducing total VMT by increasing the share of sustainable trips. The targets also aim to reduce the sale of new gasoline and diesel vehicles with all remaining new car sales being electric by 2030." https://insideevs.com/news/360442/san-francisco-emission-free-transportation-2040/ HONDA PLANNING PLATFORM FOR LARGER ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Honda’s first series electric car is already open for pre-order in Europe. The Honda e has a special platform that will be the basis for other smaller EVs but now Honda is also working on an electric platform for larger models." reports Carrie Hampel for industry source Electrive: "Honda’s new global e-platform is to be put in action before 2025 and will enable a large number of body variants such as sedans and SUVs as well as the use of various batteries and engines. The basic setup will be an electric rear-wheel drive, but four-wheel drives should also be possible. While the small Honda e is primarily aimed at the European markets and the Japanese domestic market, the small electric car is apparently too small to appeal to customers in the USA. he new architecture will also be able to accommodate cells from various vendors, including Panasonic and CATL. Only Panasonic cells will be installed in the smaller Honda e platform. The flexibility of the cells also allows production with local battery cells, which is particularly important in China." https://www.electrive.com/2019/07/17/now-the-honda-e-is-ready-a-larger-e-platform-is-underway/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 30th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. TESLA MODEL S/X INTERIOR UPDATE COULD MIMIC MODEL 3 Fred at Electrek says he's seen concept images which show a Tesla Model S and Model X interior refresh in 2019. He's billed it as an exclusive and does say Tesla declined to comment so for now, taking Electrrek at their word, this is a one source story. But there's no reason to think this isn't real because in the past they've been able to source stories with accuracy, but there's part of me which feels a little uncomfortable saying this is what the cars will look like. If it is true, I don't know if this is the way Tesla would want it announced. Or maybe they're happy with us just talking about it? So for now, let's you and I call them design ideas which might or might not ever make their way into a car. A bit like when fans online do mock-ups of what the next iPhone might look like! The pictures show an interior very much like the Model 3. He says: "Tesla is now looking to harmonize the interior of all its vehicles in its line-up and that means going even more minimal with the Model S and Model X, like Tesla did with Model 3." So we're looking at one large landscape screen, and a dash with just that one single air vent running along it. That makes sense, it's one of the most innovative features of the Model 3 and really should be in every Tesla as a pillar of their design language. There's a smaller instrument cluster so not all of the infomation would be moved over to the touchscreen. I won't go any further, but I'll link through to the Electrek article where you can read more. https://electrek.co/2018/07/30/tesla-model-s-x-interior-refresh-exclusive-first-look/ PORSCHE CONFIRMS SPECS FOR TAYCAN (AKA MISSION-E) Porsche says it wants to shift to electric cars before all other German auto manufacturers. According to details released by the Porsche Newsroom today: "By 2025 the aim is for every second Porsche sold to have an electric drive unit, with half of the models purely electric and the other half plug-in hybrids." "Porsche will release its first electric model, the Taycan sports car, in 2019. Current estimates project roughly twenty thousand units a year." "Two permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM), like those deployed in the Le Mans–winning 919 Hybrid, generate a permanent rotary motion that can be applied at any time without needing to be started. One motor powers the Taycan’s rear axle, the other the front wheels. Together they generate over 600 hp (440 kW) and are fed by batteries designed to provide five hundred kilometers of range. The Taycan sprints from 0 to 100 kmh in well under 3.5 seconds and tops 200 kmh in under 12." "The company is pursuing three options: First, charging at home—possible with a charging station or inductively via a base plate in the floor. Second, charging in cities—possible through existing infrastructure. And third, charging along the main traffic arteries in Europe. The joint venture Ionity was formed to do just that. Together with the BMW Group, Daimler AG, the Ford Motor Company, and the Volkswagen Group with Audi, Porsche is laying the groundwork for the establishment of a powerful fast-charging network for electric vehicles in Europe. The construction and operation of some four hundred fast-charging parks by 2020 are important steps toward making electromobility viable for long-distance routes as well and thus establishing itself on the market." "For Porsche customers, the main priority is being able to charge their vehicle rapidly even where the local power grid is weak. That’s now possible thanks to intermediary buffer batteries, which always have enough capacity on hand. Specifically, this means fast charging in about fifteen minutes for a range of four hundred kilometers at every Porsche charging point." https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/products/porsche-taycan-mission-e-drive-unit-battery-charging-electro-mobility-dossier-sportscar-production-christophorus-387-15827.html AUDI PB18 e-tron EV CONCEPT COMING TO PEBBLE BEACH "Audi has announced it’ll be showing off a brand new concept car at Pebble Beach in a few weeks. Called the PB18 e-tron, the new concept car will be revealed first at Laguna Seca racetrack on 23 August, but will then appear at events throughout the week" reports Curtis Moldrich for CAR Magazine, he says: "the car takes part of its name and some technology from Audi’s all-conquering R18 e-tron Le Mans car. A teaser image suggests a wide, low-slung supercar, which is pretty much what we’d expect. Audi says the new car was styled at the new Malibu Design Loft, and we’re expecting a mixture of LMP1 car, Audi R8 and Audi e-tron quattro concept car." https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/audi/audi-e-tron-electric-car-news-specs-pictures-prices/ DELIVERY FROM ELON MUSK Having waited for years to take delivery of a Model 3 for some Day 1 reservation holders would be reason enough to celebrate the big day (see Ryan McCaffery's Ride The Lightning midweek extra podcast to hear what I'm talking about) but imagine if the CEO dropped it off himself. That's what happened yesterday. Elon tweeted about trialling a new delivery system where a trailer takes the car direct from Fremont to your door in a closed container, avoiding any uncessary shipping, storage or plastic wraps to protect it. He said: "We tried out a new delivery system using an enclosed trailer straight from factory to owner’s home, so super convenient & car arrives in pristine condition without wasting plastic wrap." A twitter user Devin Scott (@MichiganMan2007) from Playa Vista, CA posted pictures of his Tesla Model 3 arriving and being handed over by Elon, and tweeted: “When @elonmusk hand delivers your #Teslamodel3
Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 11th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. An update on a story I mentioned briefly yesterday...with many news outlets confirming the news such as Bloomberg saying "Nissan Motor Co. said it will investigate instances of misconduct involving falsified data about exhaust emissions and fuel economy, the second controversy in less than a year for the automaker whose vehicle-inspection scandal had led to the recall of about 1.2 million vehicles. The data falsification...occurred on 19 models across five plants in Japan. During the checks, Nissan found out that employees misrepresented temperature and humidity data in the testing chamber and manipulated emission data on carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The automaker has hired a law firm to investigate the matter further." TESLA TO BUILD GIGAFACTORY IN SHANGHAI We knew it was coming, just a matter of when not if, and it has just been confirmed Tesla will build a factory in Shanghai, the city government announced. WSJ said: "The electric-car maker will set up a plant with an annual capacity of 500,000 vehicles, the Shanghai authorities said in a statement. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk was in Shanghai to sign a memorandum of cooperation with Mayor Ying Yong". But why build a factory there? Once Tesla Shanghai has the new Gigafactory at capacity, they'll be building half a million cars for the Chinese market without paying the new import duties. Plus they could move the cheaper cars, like base Model 3 and base Model Y to be built there with lower costs, to increase margins. We know that Freemont is full and Elon has said in the past the Model Y won't be built there. Tesla said in a statement to Bloomberg: "We expect construction to begin in the near future after we get all the necessary approvals and permits. From there, it will take roughly two years until we start producing vehicles and then another two to three years before the factory is fully ramped up to produce around 500,000 vehicles per year for Chinese customers. Tesla is deeply committed to the Chinese market, and we look forward to building even more cars for our customers here. Today’s announcement will not impact our U.S. manufacturing operations, which continue to grow.” "Tesla’s lone car-assembly plant is in Fremont, California, where it’s built about 88,000 cars through the first half of this year, and it has a giant battery factory in neighbouring Nevada. After moving ahead in China, the world’s largest market for electric vehicles, Tesla has said it will reveal plans toward the end of 2018 to build a plant in Europe." Although this isn't a financial podcast and I never pretend to understand the finer subtleties of a balance sheet, TEsla has $2.7bn in cash at the end of Q2 2018, with a plan for the Model 3 to make them profitable between now and the end of the calendar year. China has been an investor in Tesla before, with Tencent Holdings Ltd. spending $1.8 billion to buy a 5 percent stake in March 2017. MERCEDES ECITARO IS AN FULLY ELECTRIC CITY BUS At a major launch event yesterday, Mercedes revealed their all electric eCitaro bus. They said the powertrain has electric motors at the wheel hubs. Lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of up to about 243 kWh provide the power. The range is 150km. They are modular in design: the batteries are split between up to ten modules, each supplying around 25 kWh. As well as two battery modules on the vehicle roof, the standard equipment includes four modules in the rear of the bus. In the eCitaro, these are taking the place of today's powertrain combination of combustion engine and transmission. Depending upon customer requirements, another two or four battery modules are mounted on the roof of the eCitaro. They're using prismatic cells. Mercedes-Benz cools the batteries to ensure that they remain at the ideal temperature, thereby ensuring maximum charging capacity, performance capability, and service life. This cooling is undertaken by a separate battery cooler mounted on the roof. At extreme outside temperatures, the standard passenger-compartment climate control system is used to boost the cooling of the batteries. They see an upgrade path too as battery technology increase: "transport operators will even be able to increase the range of the existing eCitaro buses by swapping out the batteries at a later time and thereby further increase the operational flexibility." They are also talking about solid state batteries, which they predict will offer a 30% increase from 243kWh to 400kWh from 2020. However due to design these won't be swappable with the Li-Ion batteries but sold as a different range. VOLKSWAGEN EXPANDS "ROADMAP E" — AN E-MOBILITY ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE IN CHINA On Monday 9th July Volkswagen Group China signed a "Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)" with JAC and SEAT in Berlin, to establish a new "Research & Development" center with a focus on developing electric vehicles, connectivity and autonomous driving technologies, as well as a competitive platform for battery electric vehicles (BEV). SEAT brand will be introduced to China by 2020/2021. This new Memorandum of Understanding will play a key role in Volkswagen Group’s e-mobility plans for China, in order to meet the demands of Chinese customers. Together with JAC and SEAT, Volkswagen Group China will establish an R&D center to develop electric vehicles, connectivity and autonomous driving technologies specifically tailored to the Chinese market, including relevant parts and components and core technologies, with completion planned for 2021. CHINA'S CATL TO BUILD ITS FIRST EUROPEAN EV BATTERY FACTORY IN GERMANY "Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) will build its first production site in Europe in Germany, agreeing a major contract with BMW to supply lithium-ion batteries." according to a report from Reuters, which adds to more of what we've previously reported on this story:" A contract to build the new plant was signed on Monday during a visit to Germany by China's Premier Li Keqiang. Around 240 million euros (S$379 million) will be invested in the first phase of the project, Wolfgang Tiefensee, Thuringia's minister of economic affairs, told journalists. BMW plans to source 4 billion euros of battery cells from CATL over the next few years, with 1.5 billion euros coming from the new site in Erfurt in eastern Germany, the carmaker's purchasing head, Markus Duesmann, said. CATL, the world's largest maker of battery cells for electric vehicles, said the new factory was just its first step in Europe." says BusinessTimes.com.sg: "The CATL factory will create about 600 jobs and reach production of 14 gigawatt hours (GWh) by 2022. CATL reached shipments of 12 GWh in 2017." Deussmann also added: "BMW had invested in some of the costs for the CATL factory in Erfurt, but declined to say how much. Duesmann said BMW was investing in cell research but a decision on whether to produce battery cells itself had not been made. "I don't rule it out," he said. BMW is "very comfortable" with two suppliers of battery cells at the moment, but could add a third and is in talks with eight manufacturers, he added". NOW ANYONE CAN CONFIGURE A MODEL 3 LA Times reports: "Anyone can access the Tesla’s Model 3 “online configurator” and lay down a non-refundable $3,500 cash payment; the delivery date is determined after the money’s been transferred to Tesla." I tried it here from the UK, but with my US VPN connected, and the TEsla.com site hadn't updated. "The stated wait time a Model 3 runs from immediate delivery to as many as nine months for the company’s long-promised $35,000 base price version. But each customer is informed individually about his or her specific delivery date." Tesla replied to a request for comment with this: "“Tesla has always required this deposit for all of its vehicle orders, including Model S and Model X, given that we build cars to our customers’ specifications. That deposit goes towards the purchase price of the vehicle.” We heard at the start of July, when Tesla confirmed they had made 5,000 MOdel 3's per week, that the official number of outstanding orders was 420,000. DHL OFFERING NEW YORKERS FREE ZERO-EMISSION RIDES DHL, the Official Logistics Partner of Formula E, is offering New Yorkers a free eShuttle service from key locations across Manhattan this week in an effort to reinforce the global logistics company’s commitment to drive progress in sustainability and e-mobility. Tim Pollard, writing for the always-excellent CAR Magazine here in the UK reports that: "Skoda is working on a range of performance electric vehicles loosely dubbed e-RS to indicate the EV equivalent of the Czech company’s vRS go-faster brand. Global sales and marketing chief Alain Favey told CAR magazine that Skoda is planning performance spin-offs of its future EVs, which are in development and ready to launch from next year. First up is the e-Citigo, basically a Czech-branded Volkswagen e-Up testbed, due for launch in late 2019; but this is just the warm-up act for the main event - the new bespoke EV crossover due a year later in autumn 2020, which will be the first to get Skoda’s proposed new e-RS derivative." Favey said to CAR: "There will be an e-RS,the logic is the same as for vRS. It’s not about performance as such… it’s more about the look, the sporty seats, the experience. That’s the spirit of vRS.’ "Expect a 300-mile range, design consistent with regular Skodas, a fast-charging network at main dealers, new, floating instrumentation and the very latest in connectivity, according to Favey." https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/industry-news/skoda/skoda-e-rs-electric-vrs-performance-cars-from-2020/ VW EYES GOODWOOD RECORD WITH ITS I.D. R PIKES PEAK ELECTRIC RACER "Hardly content with shattering the all-time record at Pikes Peak, Volkswagen wants its I.D. R Pikes Peak electric race car to be the one to beat on other tracks. It's taking the racer to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the south of England this week, with designs on setting not only the electric car record at the Goodwood Hillclimb, but perhaps the overall benchmark too." according to Engadget: "The Goodwood festival marks the competitive debut of VW's car in Europe, while it will also host the European debut of Tesla's Model 3." https://www.engadget.com/2018/07/09/vw-pikes-peak-electric-race-car-goodwood-hillclimb/ MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV REMAINS UK’S NUMBER ONE PLUG-IN VEHICLE "The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV continues to be the UK’s best-selling plug-in electrified vehicle. Sales of Mitsubishi Motors’ petrol/electric plug-in hybrid SUV totalled 537 units in June and 3,732 units so far this calendar year, ahead of every other pure EV and plug-in hybrid on the market" as reported yesterday by Automotive world. Thursday 10th May 2018. FULLY CHARGED DRIVE MERCEDES EQC Only yesterday I was talking about a 1min long YouTube video, all shaky and blurry, showing the Mercedes EQC. With me like a numpty going on about how the bonnet looks too long for an EV. And then a few hours later Fully Charged released 20 mins of gorgeousness as Jonny Smith got in the passenger seat. As they say: "Jonny Smith goes for a ride in the Mercedes-Benz EQC. This SUV is the first Mercedes EV to be built from the ground up and it will the first of the new range of electrified cars to be announced later this year. The EQC is still in testing so this is a very early look at what is to come in the near future." Jonny's style is SO good, relaxed and asking the odd cheeky question, getting bits of info out of PR people who are notoriously tight lipped. I was talking to someone recently about him, someone I know who work on car magazine, and I was saying how Johnny is the best of the best when it comes to telling the story of a car...and then my friend tells me Jonny used to work for him on a magazine. And yes, he also confirmed, he's a bit of a legend. Anyway away from my mancrush and back to the Mercedes EQC. I’m about to say a couple of details from the vid, so if you’d rather, stop the podcast now. Johnny started off by saying it was their first proper EV, which I’ve said before, and got corrected by a very generous listener - rather than telling me I am an idiot, he sent me a pic of his B250. So yes, this isn't Mercedes first EV. Things we learn from the video, it's a 70kWh pack which seems small They want 500km or 310miles from that, which sounds optimistic? That would be 14kWh per 100km. The Model X is something like 380km with a pack 5kWh larger. The person who was doing the driving and most of the talking was the lead engineer, which was refreshing, as he wasn't a typical PR media type with a perfect answer which says a lot without saying anything, everything he said has value. Typical engineer. And bear in mind English is not his first language. Talking about the engineer who was driving it, he kept stabbing the accelerator and giving Jonny that burst of EV power, and every time he did it gave a little smile. Yesterday on the podcast I commented that the bonnet is too long, they could make it smaller and just have a crash structure, which makes more room for the cabin. That was explained because the platform will be used for electric, hybrid and gas. Under the hood or bonnet is a cradle that fits where the combustion engine fits, so Mercedes can use the same production line and drop in the powertrain. And…Jonny ends up on his hand and knees. But I won’t spoilt THAT surprise. Finally if you haven’t been watching Fully Charged, go onto YouTube, go back a few years and see Robert talking about trying to cajole PR departments to return calls or play ball with lending him vehicles. Fast forward and they have the best videos than any TV show, a live event soon and a massive Patreon supporter base. Huge congrats to Robert, Jonny, Mark, Dan and the team for creating a great channel. It's another gorgeous video with some classy tracking shots and they've got the drone up. BMW WIRELESS CAR CHARGING COMING SOON Car Magazine reports that BMW will debut it's wireless charging in July this year, and it's set to work with BMW PHEV's. The Car Magazine article says: "BMW sources told CAR today (May 8) that the tech is indeed headed for our market, and will be available exclusively on a leasing deal with a 5-series 530e iPerformance. To start with, that is". Wireless charging can be as good as a home Level 2 charger at 7.7kW, although this BMW systen works at 3.5kW for a full charge in 3-4hrs. There's leeway on being over the charging pad but cameras will guide into you the correct position. Well worth following CAR on socials, they are some of the best out there for great content. GOVERNMENT APPROVES GREEN LICENCE PLATES FOR E-VEHICLES In India they have confirmed green plates for EVs, private electric cars and EV cabs. "The purpose behind distinctive number plates is their easy identification for preferential treatment in parking, free entry in congested zones besides other proposed benefits like concessional toll, the road transport" says MoneyControl.com. This is what we need here for ICE cars parking in electric charging bays. If we all had green plates and legislation to keep EVs in certain spaces, it would mean those ICE cars would get tickets or towed. THE 'DRY ANALYST' WANTS ROUND TWO WITH ELON Dry Dave wants another go with Elon. I didn't actually catch the name of the analyst on the Tesla earning call who got cut off by Elon for asking a dry question, so we'll call him Dry Dave for now. I’ll Google him whilst talking. Anyway, he's p'eed off. And you don't want an upset analyst because, well, who knows what they do? Anyway, now Dry Dave has written an open letter to Elon - which sounds a bit needy already - he says "I continue to hold Tesla accountable for implementing a strategic vision that aligns with an ability to execute at scale. Name the time and place and I will be there, along with every one of your major shareholders." He's also sent Elon a set of written questions which I imagine he'll hope are more...I don’t know…wet? Somehow I don't think Elon will even give this a second of his time. Ah here we are, his name is Joseph Spek apparently. Spekky! I wouldn't hold your breath for that call Super Speks. GERMANY'S MERKEL SEES CHANCE FOR ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY PRODUCTION IN EUROPE German Chancellor Angela Merkel said yesterday that German car makers are moving into a better position for battery production. The actual cells inside batteries all come from South Korea or China. Volkswagen-owned truck maker Scania said earlier this year it is investing 10m Euro as part of a 4bn Euro project to build Europe's biggest battery cell plant in northern Sweden. ONE THIRD OF IRISH DRIVERS PLAN TO BUY A FULL-ELECTRIC CAR IN NEAR FUTURE Yesterday we told you how 50million, or 20% of Americans are considering an EV for their next car. Now the Irish Mirror says: "One in three Irish motorists planning on buying a new car in the near future will go for a full-electric vehicle, according to a new survey. A total of 37% of people questioned said they will buy an electrified car next time around." NEW LAW TO SEE ELECTRIC CARS MAKE MORE NOISE "From July 2019, all new electric and hybrid vehicles sold in Europe must be equipped with sound devices. Older electric cars must also be retrofitted with sound devices by 2021" says Garage Wire. Kevin Clinton of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said: “The greatest risks associated with electric vehicles are when they are travelling at low speeds, such as in urban areas with lower limits, as the noise from tyres and the road surface, and aerodynamic noise, are minimal at those speeds" But you do still have eyes. I do think we need to consider those who are visually impaired. But making every single car emit white noise is going to be irritating. Driving around a city you never get another 20mph, and with the windows down, your EV would actually be louder than an ICE car. Multiply that by every other car on the road. All we’ll hear is buzzes and beeps and white noise. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Thursday 8th March 2018. Coming up today, more manufacturers stop selling diesels in favour of hybrids whilst one very large one commits to diesel. Plus more from today’s Geneva Motor Show like the Hyundai Kona which you and I will to on the show tomorrow. EV TYRE TECH The 2018 Geneva International Motor Show has been dominated by headlines of the best to electrified vehicles, but Goodyear didn't want to miss out. They used the show to debut their Efficient Grip Performance with Electric Drive Technology tyre which, apart from being a bit of a mouthful, is designed for the new breed of electric vehicles. According to Goodyear, regular old tyres you'd get on an ICE car can wear up to 30% faster when fitted to an electric vehicles because in EVs we have all the torques. Cars like the BMW i3 already come with custom tyres mainly because they thinner to have less rolling resistance. And it's not just the next generation of batteries which will give us longer range, it's the rubber too. And finally there's the noise issue. For anyone who has had gone into an ICE car after being in an EV you find yourself shouting because they're so loud, well the new Goodyear's are ultra quiet too to match the cars. The say the custom tread design prevents sound waves from entering the grooves, which in turn reduces cabin noise. Also in Geneva Goodyear showed the Oxygene concept tire. The concept has a unique structure that features living moss growing within the sidewall. This open structure and the tire’s smart tread design absorb and circulate moisture and water from the road surface, allowing photosynthesis to occur and therefore releasing oxygen into the air. OK then http://www.greencarcongress.com/2018/03/20180307-goodyear.html RIMAC C UNDERSCORE TWO The Rimac Concept One is a beast and, when it's not being set on fire by The Grand Tour, is one of the best examples of how to make an electric hypercar. Well now we've seen the Rimac C_Two at the Geneva Motor Show. They teased us with it last month but now, in the flesh, it takes your breath away. First, let's get speccy. The specs are: 4 electric motors, 1,914bhp, 0-60 in just 1.85 seconds and a top speed of 258 mph. And get this, the front two motors have one gear whilst the rear motors have two gears. What kind of witchcraft is this? The 0-184 mph stat, which is something I look for in every car I buy, is a rather lazy 11.8 seconds. Only 150 of them will be made which is disappointing because I'm sure we were all ready to sell the house, put the dog on eBay and the cat on Craigslist just to raise the cash. The battery is 120kWh, liquid cooled, which is good for 400miles unless you stamp on the electron pedal. They've also built it with Level 4 autonomous driving so, in theory, you could buy one of the greatest driving machines ever made and have it do all the fun bits. Although if you use self driving in places where it’s not legal, like here in the UK, the police will probably pull you over and send you to jail forever with nothing by memories of the time you drive a Rimac. https://www.autoblog.com/2018/03/06/rimac-c_two-electric-hypercar-almost-2-000-horsepower/ RENAULT ZOE GETS MORE MUSCLE Car Magazine in the posted some wonderful pics of the Geneva Motor Show which I urge you to check out. Along with supercars and luxury hybrids was the new and very purple Renault Zoe ZE40 R110. The R110 moniker is a reference to the 107bhp motor which is newly upgraded to 80kw and, whilst it doesn't provide much more of a gut punch when you pull away from the light, will dramatically improve the 50-70 time and motorway driving. Oh and it's purple. So very very purple. The press pics a while ago were nice but seeing it in the flesh, it's ALL the purple. The new Zoe will also come with Android Auto and third party apps can be used including Waze, Skype and Messenger. No word on whether the charging will be any faster. Months ago on InsideEVs i read an article about future Zoe's coming with CCS socket and ability to handle up to 150kW charging. With a 40kWh battery to top up, that would be nice, but I can't find anything either way. I'm guessing not. https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/renault/new-renault-zoe-2018-uk-price-specs-performance-interior/ OUTLANDER GETS A POLISH The Mitsubishi Outlander is the outrageously popular plug in hybrid which just keeps on selling in Europe. The updated version was shown at Geneva which is now cleaner, more efficient, smoother and with a more powerful motor. I don't know much about combustion engines, shock horror, but it moves from an Otto cycle to an Atkinson cycle petrol 2.4 litre unit. The important electric bits all get a bit of spit and polish with more power from the inverter, the motor, 15% battery capacity and a higher rate to discharge that power. Altogether a nice set of improvements. https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/mitsubishi/mitsubishi-outlander-phev-my2019-news-info-tech-spec-pictures-prices/ TOYOTA OFFER AURIS WITH TWO HYBRID OPTIONS So you may know I have a love/hate relationship with Toyota. They were early with electrification and have sold a bazillion cars with a battery in, but just recently they’ve decided to throw shade at plug in cars to advance their own market lead on soft hybrids. Come on Toyota let’s all move forward to together without you starting a fight against owners of plugins and pure electric vehicles. However I do love them for cars like the Auris which sell like hotcakes, and Geneva showed up the third generation which…fanfare please…won’t have a diesel option. Instead there will be two petrol-electric versions. I love you Toyota. However no chance of a third option of a pure electric. I hate you Toyota. Not really. https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/toyota/new-toyota-auris-uk-price-specs-sale-date-hybrid-engines-interior-mpg/ AUDI E-TRON MOVES FROM CONCEPT TO PROTOTYPE Audi were at Geneva with the e-tron. Not so much a concept but a protoype these days. How miffed do you think they are that the Jaguar I-PACE is taking orders whilst they're not ready yet? Journalists have been in one, although not driving one, which is what Jag were doing last December, which was three months away from launch. However all I can get from Audi is that the e-tron will start production before the end of this year. Same as the I-PACE it's compatible with rapid chargers up to 150kW. Same as the I-PACE real-world driving range of 300 miles is the claim. If only idiots like me would stop comparing it to the Jaguar which, did i mention, you can currently buy. https://www.carthrottle.com/post/the-audi-e-tron-laughs-in-the-face-of-range-anxiety/?utm_source=carthrottle-rssfeed&utm_medium=rss Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. Tuesday 6th March 2018. Before I start, in the last few minutes the Geneva motor show has just seen the launch of the VW ID Vizzion, with some very good carpets but a lack of steering wheel, and the Bentley Bentayga Hydrid with a “statement piece” charging station. I will decipher the press releases and talk more about what you want to know tomorrow. I-PACE DRIVEN Firstly, car mags and journalists have been given their first taste of driving the new all electric Jaguar I-PACE as they arrive for the Geneva Motor Show. However these aren’t what you call in depth road tests and the drives were limited to a few minutes around a carefully controlled track designed by Jag, but we don’t care, the first reviews are in. Firstly Autoexpress who say “The I-Pace ticks the usual EV boxes, with instant torque delivery and the ability to slow down to a complete halt just by lifting off the throttle pedal. But there’s also impressive refinement from those dual motors; only a faint whine is audible under hard acceleration.” Car Magazine on the other hand praise the steering and how jaguar-y it feels. I presume that’s a compliment. They also noticed how aggressive the top level of regen was and inform us that Jaguar engineers say one pedal driving is suitable for 98% of all braking events. Until some more in depth reviews surface in May that’s all we have to be getting on with, but I’ll keep an eye on the in person comments at Geneva. CUPRA EV SPECS On the podcast recently was news about Volkswagen’s Spanish division Seat, and their Cupra eRacer, the first touring car powered by electrons. At the time I lamented any actual specs because I’m guess you like me, enjoy a stat or two. Well now we have more details. It reaches 100km/h or 62mph in 3.2 Sec, onto an eventual 270km/h, thanks to 4 electric motors and continuous 402hp, which allow a peak of up to 670hp. The battery pack has 6,077 cells, weighing in at 450kg which makes up a third of the car’s weight Cupra e-Racer Technical Director, Xavier Serra says “One of this vehicle’s most surprising aspects has to be its power. The Cupra e-Racer can reach 12,000 revolutions, compared to the 6,500 of a petrol powered racer car, and all with a single gear.” It’s race-ready too, with a roll cage and racing displays. Will it ever race? Is this just proof of concept? And if so, can I please have it when you’re finished showing it off. MERCEDES SMART CARS AND EQ POWER The Mercedes Benz Smart Cars have always been a little arms length from it’s parent. The showroom near here for instance has a separate building, logos and branding. It’s very different to Mercedes showroom. Now Mercedes are bringing the Smart electric into the fold, and making it part of their EQ brand of EVs. CEO of smart Dr. Annette Winkler said: “smart is electric, innovative, intelligent and totally unique, or in three words each: ‘smart EQ fortwo’ and ‘smart EQ forfour’. With the smart EQ fortwo/forfour, we are putting the first products from the Mercedes-Benz Cars EQ family on urban roads and showing how much fun electric mobility can be.” The new models also come with a more powerful onboard charger for level 2 charging, up to 22kW power. Staying with Mercedes they also launched their EQ Power plug-in diesel hybrid. They say that electrification via hybrid means that they are locally-emission free, which is somewhat of a caveat as they run on diesel. The powertrain will be available for C-Class and upwards, with benefits for efficiency and performance. But it still burns Diesel. The electric range of 50km is in line with what we’ve seen from other plug-in hybrids recently, this time with a 13.5kWh battery and onboard 7.2kW charger, with 2 hours charge time to full. They talk about pre-entry climate control, a benefit pure electric owners love, being part of their plug ins too. Their press release goes on to mention improvements in diesel, the combustion process and internal friction. I switched off slightly because it means you have all the bits of a diesel to go wrong and need servicing. I’ll leave you with a thought on hybrids. The threat of heavy fines from European Union regulators regarding manufacturers missing CO2 reduction targets, combined with a switch away from diesel cars by customers, is a cause for some very unhappy diesel fans in the boardroom. Many people are holding off buying a diesel, even a hybrid, after reading headlines of major cities banning use of the fuel. FORMER OPEL CEO LOVES ELECTRIC Former Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann was the exec who wanted Opel to be an electric-only automaker, has gone all-electric himself with a Tesla and a BMW i3. You'd think he probably has a few ways to get a pretty steep discount at Opel. I joke of course, but Electrek point out the challenges of being pro-electric at an automaker where so much profit and jobs rely on selling combustion engines a little bit longer. His plan was hardly radical, he was giving 14 years or so to gradually phase out engine engines and pivot to EV's by 2030. However things didn't work out that way as GM sold their European division of Opel to PSA. He has form in electric cars too, having previously led VW's electric plans for a period. I do have sympathy for other execs, who have hundreds of thousands or even millions of employees and those in the supply chain, to take the jump from existing revenue streams to electric sales. They've also made long term investments into engines which have long life cycles and they need to recoup their R&D costs. Hopefully it will be self-fulfilling as they see competitors earn from EV's, more will take the leap. DETAILS OF ELECTRIC FORDS The next generation of Ford Focus is one of the only cars not be featured at the Geneva Motor Show but we'll see more of it in April. Sources say the dash will feature a more prominent tablet sixed touchscreen, although not Model 3 levels of display. They are said to be using a soft hybrid 48-volt electric system to power an integrated starter-generator, an increasingly popular way to use electrons to supplement the engine and take away some of the duties the engine would have provided, such as pumps and belts and starters. NISSAN LEAF COLD WEATHER TEST The Toronto Electric Vehicle Association has taken a new Nissan LEAF out in winter conditions of -7°C (19.4 Fahrenheit). During the motorway/highway test drive the LEAF energy consumption was 29.3 kWh/100 km (62 miles). Factors include the route, the temperature and even the heated seats. That's a long way off 151 miles by EPA measure, so start doing that sun dance and hope for warm weather. There was more love for the e-Pedal which every review I've seen raves about and also ProPilot. READERS LETTERS I saw a story in a popular newspaper here in the UK which barely deserved the time to read it, as it said the recent cold weather we’ve had means that electric car batteries would run down “in no time” with heaters on, wonderfully vague and blatantly wrong. Now The Guardian have printed a response from a reader: “I had to laugh at John Richards’s worry about people freezing in stuck electric vehicles because their batteries would run down in “no time” while those in a petrol car could run their heater (Letters, 3 March). Running the heated seats and climate control for about seven hours costs about three miles of range for my Tesla.” Cat Burton Another reader replied: “My Renault Zoe has a battery capacity of 40 kilowatt hours, enough to run a one-bar electric for for 40 hours. I suspect my car would keep me warm longer than a petrol or diesel vehicle, without the added hazard of surrounding the car with noxious fumes.” Geoff Williams, Wolverhampton” Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. We'd love to spread the word about electric cars so please do share this with at least one person who might be interested.
