Author of several plays, television dramas, works of non-fiction, letters to the BBC about the pitiful decline in standards of literature and grammar, and master of the abusive email – Ed Reardon is back. Ed is still living in his superb, stylish capsule urban living unit (i.e., small office conversion), and conducting his part-time relationship with Maggie. However, the means to finance a decent living as always eludes him. His agent, Ping, is not forthcoming with any major offers of work but his nemesis and best friend, Jaz, is keen for Ed to ghost-write his new memoir, ‘I, Jaz'. Ed would rather focus on trying to secure a spot on local radio and is busy ‘self-taping' his audition piece berating the art of ‘Storytelling', which proves a little difficult as his daughter, Eli, has decided she is going to pursue a new career as a ‘Storyteller' and asks Ed to support her. And with Pearl having gone to join the silver workforce as a store detective, Ed has a new student in his University of the 3rd Age writing class which allows him the opportunity to introduce a superior command of the narrative art to a new audience in the form of his classic ‘Tenko' episode. The series is dedicated to Andrew Nickolds, who sadly passed away mid-way through writing the series. Next week, Vermont voters could write abortion protections into the state constitution. But 50 years ago, Vermont was a state where most people went elsewhere to end a pregnancy. The Vermont Supreme Court had legalized abortion in 1972, with its decision in Beecham v. Leahy. But while elective abortion was allowed, it remained elusive: The University of Vermont's hospital, which came from a Catholic tradition, said it wouldn't offer the procedure. Vermont hospitals did fewer than 20 abortions per year, and more than 1,000 patients traveled out-of-state annually to terminate a pregnancy. So in just three months, in the short window between the Beecham judgment and the Roe decision, hundreds of people in the Burlington area — activists, faith leaders, hippies, bankers, lawyers — organized and created the Vermont Women's Health Center. It was the first women-run health center of its kind in the United States. The Health Center also created a unique apprenticeship program that enabled women to become physician assistants and to provide abortions. It trained UVM medical students and OB-GYN residents at a time when it was rare for medical schools to train students in abortion. It was written about in major medical journals. It survived a ballot referendum, a fire and an onslaught of out-of-state protesters. The Women's Health Center operated as a worker's collective for years, and this episode includes just some of the women who worked and trained there over its nearly-thirty-year run. Rachel Atkins, Sue Burton, Berta Geller, Cate Nicholas and Janet, all physician assistants, discuss their work at the Health Center, and reflect on this post-Roe era. Allie Stickney, former CEO of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, describes the first call she answered on a pre-Roe abortion hotline.

THE COAT CUPBOARD COLLECTIVE presents AT THE FIRST STROKE, STEPHEN CRITCHLOW's uplifting and often hilarious account of his extraordinary recovery from a serious stroke earlier this year while in rehearsals for ALONE IN BERLIN at the Royal and Derngate in Northampton. With contributions from RACHEL ATKINS, DAVID HOLT, CHRIS PAVLO and DAVID SARGENT. Especial thanks to NAXOS for its generous licensing of the CRUSH COLLISION MARCH by SCOTT JOPLIN. A WORD FROM STEPHEN In January of this year, I had a stroke and spent time at Northampton General Hospital and University Hospital Lewisham. While in hospital, I experienced first-hand the hard work and pressure facing NHS workers. When I was back home, a writer friend of mine came to visit me. He suggested I write an account of my time in hospital. This could have a therapeutic effect, he told me, and it has. I also wanted to give something back to our amazing NHS, all those people who come from every part of the globe, who work hard and care for us, when we can't care for ourselves. I have therefore recorded as honestly as I can the journey of a stroke victim, some of my meetings with staff and patients along the way, and the humour and humanity I found on the hospital wards. If you have enjoyed this podcast and would like to show your appreciation of the NHS, please visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/atthefirststroke, where I am raising money for NHS CHARITIES TOGETHER, and give whatever you feel you can afford. STEPHEN CRITCHLOW has been a professional actor for over 30 years and a member of the BBC Radio Drama Company no less than five times. Stage credits include Sir Peter Hall's HAMLET (Gielgud), Ray Cooney's PYGMALION (Albery), three years in THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS (Criterion), and CYRANO DE BERGERAC at the Royal National Theatre. Stephen has toured in many productions, including ROUND THE HORNE REVISITED (in which he played Kenneth Horne), and recently THIS HOUSE for Headlong and THE REMAINS OF THE DAY for Out of Joint. His many TV and film credits include, DOWNTON ABBEY, MIRANDA, SKINS, CIDER WITH ROSIE, RED DWARF 11, HATTIE, FANTABULOZA, THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY and CHURCHILL: THE HOLLYWOOD YEARS. RACHEL ATKINS' recent theatre work includes, THE COUNTRY GIRLS (Minerva Chichester), INKHEART and ROMEO AND JULIET (Home Theatre Manchester). For television, she has appeared in CHERNOBYL, THE ROOK, HUMANS, and CALL THE MIDWIFE, and films include THE LAST LETTER FROM YOUR LOVER and THE COUNTRY GIRL. Rachel has been a member of the BBC Radio Drama Company several times and was a regular in THE ARCHERS. She has recorded numerous audiobooks as well as voice overs for video games. DAVID HOLT studied theatre arts in Birmingham in the late 1980s, then moved London to pursue a career as a versatile actor in TV, film, theatre, radio, and as a voice artist. He has appeared in countless productions of all types over a 30+ year career, and is renowned for his animation voice work, having appeared in over 90 animated TV series. CHRIS PAVLO has worked extensively in the voice world. He has enjoyed four seasons with the BBC Radio Drama Company, with credits ranging from THE ARCHERS to news-based comedy THE WAY IT IS. He can also be heard voicing video games, commercials, documentaries and podcasts. Chris co-founded and runs THE PODCAST COMPANY, a production house for podcasts. DAVID SARGENT has been an actor and voice-over artist for 32 years. He shares a drama school and voice agent with Stephen Critchlow. Many have a richer, rounder flavour, almost like chestnuts. This is totally different to some modern, one dimensional sweetcorns which are just sweet with little flavour. Hardly any of the vegetable seeds sold to UK gardeners and growers are produced in this country. Similarly, other products with local provenance are valued – local cider or breeds of livestock, for example – but rarely local varieties of vegetable.Change could be on its way, however. Small independent seed companies are becoming more popular; Brexit could bring new regulations that govern which vegetable varieties they can sell; and there are moves to encourage local production of seed. All this could lead to more choice for gardeners – giving us some tailor-made varieties and better quality seed.Rachel Atkins reads Sue Stickland's thoughts on the future of seeds... Post-Brexit. Foraging expert Geoff Dann explains how by doing your homework you can gather wild mushrooms with safety. Read by Rachel Atkins.Fungi foraging can be daunting to a beginner. Britain is home to a vast variety (perhaps seven times as many species as there are plants) and some of them are deadly. In many cases, identification isn't easy (even for experienced mushroomhunters).Going foraging with an expert doesn't always help – some of my students, especially when the fungi are plentiful, are so overwhelmed that they are even more cautious at the end of the session than they were at the beginning. For most people, though, a few hours spent with an experienced person certainly speeds up the first steps. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

A traditional potager is an ornamental vegetable garden where vegetables are grown with flowers and herbs, often in clumps rather than rows. It is in contrast to the tidy allotment where rows of veg neatly stride across the plot and flowers are often restricted to the edges or are purely for cutting. This is so much simpler to sow, hoe and harvest, when crops are in straight rows. So why bother to mix things up?The idea of a plot that is productive and beautiful is very appealing, although serried ranks of perfect veg have their own beauty too.Rachel Atkins reads Geoff Stebbings' feature on the challenges and rewards of mixing flowers and veg in a modern potager. Would you like the details of your sex life, private conversations, and hidden passions splashed across the pages of a British tabloid or published online? Could you do anything to stop it? In Britain, unlike in the USA or France, there is no right to privacy, only a much weaker "right to confidence". And though Britain has notoriously tight libel laws – making it the favoured destination for libel tourists – they only work retrospectively, after publication, by which time your reputation has been shattered. That at any rate is the view of former FIA president Max Mosley – whose proclivities were exposed by the News of the World. In 2010 he applied to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg for a change in the law that would make it compulsory to inform people before publishing private information about them. Did he have a good case? Or was he making an outrageous assault on press freedom? Hear him and Rachel Atkins take on Tom Bower and Ken MacDonald QC in our debate from 2010.
