Many gay men and women have been told that God doesn't love them and that religious people hate them. The reality is much more humane and helpful. Dr. Janet E Smith discusses how many gay people, who previously thought that God and religious people hated them, have come to know God's love through the efforts of humble individuals who took the time to minister to them.   Professor Smith is the author of Humanae Vitae: A Generation Later and A Right to Privacy. Her volume entitled Self-Gift contains her previously published essays on Humanae Vitae and the thought of John Paul II.   She edited Why Humanae Vitae is Right: A Reader; Life Issues, Medical Choices (with Christopher Kaczor); Living the Truth in Love: Pastoral Approaches to Same-Sex Attractions (with R. This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with journalist, author, and an acknowledged expert in American right-wing extremism, David Neiwert. Neiwert has appeared on Anderson Cooper 360, CNN Newsroom, and The Rachel Maddow Show and is the Pacific Northwest correspondent for the Southern Poverty Law Center. His work has appeared at Mother Jones, The Washington Post, MSNBC.com, and many other publications. His previous books include Of Orcas and Men: What Killer Whales Can Teach Us, And Hell Followed With Her: Crossing the Dark Side of the American Border (NationBooks: Winner of the International Latino Book Award for General Nonfiction), and Alt-America: The Rise of The Radical Right in The Age of Trump. He has won a National Press Club award for Distinguished Online Journalism and his latest book — The Age of Insurrection: The Radical Right's Assault On American Democracy — is the focus of this episode. From a smattering of ominous right-wing compounds in the Pacific Northwest in the 1970s, to the shocking January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, America has seen the culmination of a long-building war on Democracy being waged by a fundamentally violent and antidemocratic far-right movement that unironically calls itself the “Patriot” movement. So how did we get here? In his book, The Age of Insurrection, award-winning journalist Neiwert — who been following the rise of extremist groups since the late 1970s, when he was a young reporter in Idaho — explores how the movement was built over decades, how it was set aflame by Donald Trump and his cohorts, and how it will continue to attack American Democracy for the foreseeable future. In this episode host Michael Shields and David Neiwert get to the bottom of exactly how dangerous the radical right is at this juncture of American history. They break down the components of Trump's Army while pondering how extremism has gone mainstream in a variety of ways. They talk about Steve Bannon's role in spreading authoritarianism internationally, how the police have been infiltrated by the radical right, how organized the alt-right attacks are on democratic institutions at every level including local, state, and federal targets, and so much more. That’s fightlaughfeast.com. https://www.dailywire.com/news/u-s-surgeon-general-warns-13-years-old-is-too-young-to-join-social-media U.S. Surgeon General Warns 13-Years-Old Is Too Young To Join Social Media U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy believes children 13 years old are too young to join social media platforms, citing kids are still “developing their identity,” and such engagement can create a distorted sense of themselves. Murthy, who has served as surgeon general under the Obama and the Biden administrations, signaled the warning in an interview with CNN, noting adolescents should only be allowed to access the platforms until they were 16 years old at the earliest. “It’s a time, you know, early adolescence, where kids are developing their identity, their sense of self,” Murthy said. “It’s a time where it’s really important for us to be thoughtful about what’s going into how they think about their own self-worth and their relationships, and the skewed and often distorted environment of social media often does a disservice to many of those children.” Social media giant platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter require a minimum age of 13 to join. Murthy further noted the issue with addictive algorithms, which pits youth against Big Tech. “You have some of the best designers and product developers in the world who have designed these products to make sure people are maximizing the amount of time they spend on these platforms,” he said. “And if we tell a child, use the force of your willpower to control how much time you’re spending, you’re pitting a child against the world’s greatest product designers.” “And that’s just not a fair fight,” he added. “And so that’s why I think our kids need help.” The Journal of the American Medical Association published a study earlier this month which sampled 178 12-year-olds from three public middle schools in North Carolina and reviewed how often the minors check social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. Researchers found individuals with habitual checking behaviors showed initial hypoactivation but increasing sensitivity to potential social cues over time. Nonhabitual individuals, however, showed initial hyperactivation and decreasing sensitivity. Dr. Adriana Stacey told CNN using social media releases a “dopamine dump” and compared the addictiveness of smartphones to cocaine. Surgeon General Murthy called on parents to band together to prevent their children from logging on to social media platforms until they’re at least 16 years old. Seattle Public School District officials filed a lawsuit earlier this month against several social media platform owners, including Facebook and TikTok, for allegedly intentionally cultivating and creating a mental health crisis among the youth and have caused a public nuisance affecting Seattle Public Schools. President Joe Biden drew attention to social media platforms in his 2022 State of the Union Address, alleging the harm social media has wrought on American youth should implore all to “hold social media platforms accountable for the national experiment they’re conducting on our children for profit.” The Biden administration & General Murthy took fire howewver, due to what appears to be inconscistencies in their rules. He told "CNN Newsroom" host Pamela Brown that parents should look to push back the age at which their children begin using social media platforms to make sure kids "don't get exposed to harm early." Last March, Murthy addressed a directive from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, R., effectively cutting gender-affirming care for minors in his state, taking to Twitter to write, "Yesterday afternoon in Austin, I met with transgender youth and their parents to hear how they are coping in light of the state's recent directive equating gender-affirming care to child abuse." "The pain and fear in their voices was heartbreaking. Parents and kids are terrified about being separated. They described repeated attacks on their families at traumatic… LGBTQ+ youth were already at increased risk of suicide and other mental health struggles. We should be seeking to provide them with support and medical care…. "Forcing parents to choose between following medical advice for their child and risking an investigation from the state is simply not right. The government shouldn't be interfering with decisions between doctors and patients," he continued. https://www.theepochtimes.com/border-patrol-agents-told-to-not-chase-all-vehicles-that-flee_5022784.html?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=BonginoReport Border Patrol Agents Told to Not Chase All Vehicles That Flee Texas—Border Patrol agents will soon be limited in chasing vehicles that flee from them, under new rules unveiled in January and set to take effect in May. Agents must determine that vehicular pursuits are “necessary and objectively reasonable” under the rules, and can terminate a pursuit at any time without fear of questioning from superiors. Agents are being told that they must consider factors such as “the seriousness of the reason” for a pursuit and weather conditions when deciding whether to chase a fleeing vehicle that failed to stop at a checkpoint or port of entry—the official places to enter the United States from Mexico and Canada. “A Vehicular Pursuit is considered Necessary when an Authorized Officer/Agent concludes there is an immediate need to apprehend a subject as part of their enforcement duties based on the totality of the known facts and circumstances,” the rules state. A pursuit meets the “objectively reasonable” standard when the government’s interest in apprehending the persons or people in the fleeing vehicle “clearly outweighs the Foreseeability of Risk to the public, officers/agents, other law enforcement, and vehicle occupants,” the rules state. Agents must evaluate the interest and the potential risk when choosing whether to pursue a fleeing vehicle and continue the evaluation during the chase. They must also alert a supervisor “as soon as feasible” during a pursuit and immediately terminate the chase if the supervisor does not authorize it to continue, or orders it stopped. If a chase is terminated, agents must pull their vehicle over to signal to the public and the fleeing driver that the chase has ended, according to the rules. They must alert superiors. They can then start driving again in the last known direction of the fleeing vehicle to check for “crashes, potential flight on foot, to determine if the Subject Vehicle was abandoned, or for any other incident.” The rules also suggest alternatives to vehicular pursuits, such as tracking with airplanes. Troy Miller, who became acting Customs and Border Protection commissioner in late 2022 after the ouster of Chris Magnus, said that vehicular pursuits “pose inherent risks—to members of the public, officers and agents, and vehicle occupants” and that the new policy “acknowledges these risks and shifts our Agency’s overall approach to a risk-based model when it comes to pursuits.” Magnus stressed that the policy does not bar vehicular pursuits but “provides a clear framework” for weighing the risks associated with pursuits against the benefits. https://hotair.com/tree-hugging-sister/2023/01/30/florida-taking-the-first-steps-to-become-26th-constitutional-carry-state-n527375 Florida taking the first steps to become 26th constitutional carry state The speaker of the Florida House announced lawmakers had filed the bill this morning. This is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily Newsbrief for Wednesday, February 1st, 2023. Ladies and gentleman, did you know that you can sign up for our Fight Laugh Feast Conference, happening at the Ark Encounter this year? Well now you can! Head on over to fightlaughfeast.com, and you can sign up today! In one exchange on “CNN Newsroom,” Acosta asked Wolf point-blank who won the 2020 election and whether he believed Biden triumphed “fair and square.” Wolf acknowledged that Biden was president, but failed to respond directly, claiming that illegalities and fraud existed in elections and should be investigated. (There's no evidence election fraud affected the 2020 vote.) Acosta pointed out that Trump pressed his election lies in lawsuits that were shot down more than 60 times in court (often by Republican judges and even some appointed by Trump). When Wolf said both the left and right “do not have confidence in our election system,” Acosta replied: “Our elections are fine.” “You are the former acting secretary of Homeland Security and you're spreading doubt and fear,” Acosta continued. “These are facts,” Wolf said. “No, these are alternative facts,” Acosta followed. Wolf made a toothless call for integrity in elections. A frustrated Acosta snapped that “we also need to have integrity among officials who work in government and who have left the government who will tell the American people the truth.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In Where the Children Take Us, Obiajulu's daughter, Zain E. Asher, tells the story of her mother's harrowing fight to raise four children as a widowed immigrant in South London. There is tragedy in this tale, but it is not a tragedy. Drawing on tough-love parenting strategies, Obiajulu teaches her sons and daughters to overcome the daily pressures of poverty, crime and prejudice—and much more. With her relentless support, the children exceed all expectations—becoming a CNN anchor, an Oscar-nominated actor—Asher's older brother Chiwetel Ejiofor—a medical doctor, and a thriving entrepreneur.    The generations-old Nigerian parenting techniques that lead to the family's salvation were born in the village where young Obiajulu and Arinze meet with their country on the brink of war. Together, they emigrate to London in the 1970s to escape the violence, but soon confront a different set of challenges in the West.    When grief threatens to engulf her fractured family after the accident, Obiajulu, suddenly a single mother in a foreign land, refuses to accept defeat. As her children veer down the wrong path, she instills a family book club with Western literary classics, testing their resolve and challenging their deeper understanding. Desperate for inspiration, she plasters newspaper clippings of Black success stories on the walls and hunts for overachieving neighbors to serve as role models, all while running Shakespeare theatre lines with her son and finishing homework into the early morning with Zain. When distractions persist, she literally cuts the TV cord and installs a residential pay phone.   The story of a woman who survived genocide, famine, poverty, and crushing grief to rise from war torn Africa to the streets of South London and eventually the drawing rooms of Buckingham Palace, Where the Children Take Us is an unforgettable portrait of strength, tenacity, love, and perseverance embodied in one towering woman. About Zain Asher:  Zain Ejiofor Asher was born to first-generation Nigerian parents in South London. A graduate of Oxford University and Columbia University, she is currently an anchor for CNN International. She anchors the weekend edition of CNN Newsroom, and can regularly be seen filling in on the network's premier business programs, Quest Means Business, The Express and First Move with Julia Chatterley. Ejiofor Asher's brothers are Oscar-nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, successful entrepreneur Obinze, and medical doctor Kandibe. She is passionate about her family, career, and being of service. She lives in NYC with her husband and two sons. She is currently launching her own show on CNN.

If you value free speech content, it is time to vote with money.  THE SCRIPTURE:  John 9:39 Jesus said,[a] “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” John 9: 28-34 26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered, “I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?” 28 Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow's disciple! We are disciples of Moses! 29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don't even know where he comes from.” 30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don't know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will. 32 Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out. John 9: 35 - 41 Spiritual Blindness  35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.” 37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.” 38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. 39 Jesus said,[a] “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” 40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?” 41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains. THE NEWS: Spotify Adding COVID-19 Content Advisories to Podcast Episodes to ‘Combat Misinformation Joni Mitchell, celebrity purveyor of medical misinformation' Lunatics: Acosta & Guest Compare Unvaccinated to Committing Human Sacrifices - Just when you think CNN can't go any lower they manage to prove us wrong. On Sunday afternoon's CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta, the leftist anchor brought on Atlantic writer Kurt Anderson to claim that those who are skeptical of the COVID vaccines are akin to the Aztecs committing "mass human sacrifices." U.K. data released in response to a Freedom of Information Act request show that the number of deaths between January 2020 and the end of September 2021 in England and Wales, where COVID-19 was the sole cause of death, was just 17,371 — not 137,133 as reported - In the video above, Dr. John Campbell reviews recent data released by the U.K. government in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. They show that the number of deaths during 2020 in England and Wales, where COVID-19 was the sole cause of death, was 9,400. Of those, 7,851 were aged 65 and older. The median age of death was 81.5 years. THE LISTENERS: Todd. I love ya man, but you are so wrong on the Impossible Burger. Jim Sciutto is CNN's chief national security correspondent and CNN Newsroom anchor. In his latest book, The Madman Theory: Trump Takes On the World, Sciutto looks at how a provocative approach to foreign relations, made famous by Richard Nixon, is today employed by President Trump on the world stage. Trump's mindset around America's relationship with other nations is understood in one word: transactional. “Trump's view of the world with adversaries and allies is ‘What are you doing for me? What are you doing for us?'” This has often led to extremely narrow points of view on issues where President Trump doesn't see the big picture as it relates to broader alliances. We see this playing out with China. Tensions have escalated sharply under the Trump administration with a trade war and attacks on industries like Huawei and TikTok. ————————————————————————— To learn more about this episode, including podcast transcripts and show notes, visit *salt.org/talks* ( http://salt.org/talks ) Moderated by Anthony Scaramucci.

Welcome to the 8th episode of the Daria Hamrah Podcast! Today I had the rare opportunity to talk to one of my most inspiring guests that I am lucky to call a friend. What makes her so special is the very essence of what my podcast is about, success! Success, not measured by monetary value but rather than fulfillment and happiness. To me, the only true measure of success. People that follow their dreams and passion no matter what the odds are, people that believe in themselves and step out of their comfort zone in order to achieve their goals. My guest Rudi Bakhtiar is best known for anchoring CNN Headline News Tonight, a prime time national three-hour newscast in the US. Not only she was anchoring this Emmy nominated CNN Newsroom, but she also worked as a dedicated correspondent for Anderson Cooper 360 at that time only 8 years into her career with the network. All of this after starting off as an intern for CNN in Los Angeles only to become a line producer at the network in a very short period of time. In this very up-close and personal interview, Rudi, one of the biggest celebrities in the Persian-American community, walks us through her life, from being born in California to moving back to Iran until moving back to the US after the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Having had an inspiring father who was a Professor in Mathematics at the top Science and Tech university in Iran, as well as a  great uncle who was the Shah of Iran's last prime minister, she had two inspiring figures in her life who influenced her greatly in achieving her successful career. Most importantly giving her the confidence in believing in herself.Making her right career choice however came after reading a book about: “Finding Your Passion”. She walks us through her struggles and successes, from being destined to become a dentist and being accepted to NYU dental school, to studying architecture at the career discovery program at Harvard School of Design, to then making a complete 180 and going into journalism, only to become one of the youngest news anchors at then the biggest news agency in the world, CNN. Having all the stars lined up, her career took an unexpected turn when her father was diagnosed with cancer and she decided to leave her successful career in order to take care of her sick father knowing that she would not be able to return to her anchor job as threatened by her boss at CNN. Her love for her father and loyalty to her family was greater than her career which speaks words about who she is as a human being. As if life as the daughter of Iranian Immigrants in the US wasn't hard enough, she became a victim of a sexual harassment case while working for FOX news that was featured in a recent blockbuster movie “Bombshell” featuring Charlize Theron, that unveiled the story around the sexual harassment lawsuit filed by Gretchen Carlson against longtime Fox News CEO Roger Ailes in July 2016.After her father's passing, she then became a humanitarian going to the war zones in Syria and Iraq to report as an independent contractor for Reuters about the crimes and human rights violations in those war zones. It is her experience during the time that led her to produce her upcoming documentary about Syria, ISIS, and the truth about the middle east conflict. I hope you will be as inspired as I was after listening to her story and

His new book is “The Madman Theory: Trump Takes On the World”. Sciutto explains that there is no strategic logic or so-called “madman theory” guiding Donald Trump and his control over the country’s foreign policy. Sciutto warns that America’s foreign policy is now guided by Donald Trump’s personal whims, delusions, authoritarianism, narcissism, greed, corruption, and personal fealty to Vladimir Putin.   Jim Sciutto also details how Donald Trump has brought the United States to the brink of what could have been a horrible war with North Korea and Iran – but it was only because the country’s senior military officials did not allow Trump to follow through on his worst impulses that disaster was avoided. Jim Sciutto - The Madman Theory: Trump Takes On the World CNN Profile CNN.com Richard Nixon tried it first. Hoping to make communist bloc countries uneasy and thus unstable, Nixon let them think he was just crazy enough to nuke them. He called this “the madman theory.” Nearly half a century later, President Trump has employed his own “madman theory,” sometimes intentionally and sometimes not. Trump praises Kim Jong-un and their “love notes,” admires and flatters Vladimir Putin, and gives a greenlight to Recep Tayyip Erdogan to invade Syria. Meanwhile, he attacks US institutions and officials, ignores his own advisors, and turns his back on US allies from Canada and Mexico to NATO to Ukraine to the Kurds at war with ISIS. Trump is willing to make the nation’s most sensitive and consequential decisions while often ignoring the best information and intelligence available to him. He continually catches the world off guard, but is it working? In The Madman Theory, Jim Sciutto shows how Trump's supporters assume he has a strategy for long-term success – that he is somehow playing three-dimensional chess. Now that we are four years into his presidency, we can see his unpredictable focus on short-term headlines has in fact lead to predictably mediocre results in the short and long run. Trump’s foreign policy has undermined American values and national security interests, while hurting allies who have been on our side for decades, leaving them isolated and vulnerable without American support. Meanwhile, he comforts and emboldens our enemies. The White House’s revolving door of staff demonstrates that Trump has no real plan; all serious policymakers—and those who would be a check on his most destructive impulses—have been exiled or jumped ship. Sciutto has interviewed a wide swath of current and former administration officials to assemble the first comprehensive portrait of the impact of Trump’s erratic foreign policy. Smart, authoritative, and compelling, The Madman Theory is the definitive take on Trump’s calamitous legacy around the globe, showing how his proclivity for chaos is creating a world which is more unstable, violent, and impoverished than it was before. Jim Sciutto is CNN's chief national security correspondent and anchor of CNN Newsroom. After more than two decades as a foreign correspondent stationed in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, he returned to Washington to cover the Defense Department, the State Department, and intelligence agencies for CNN. His work has earned him Emmy Awards, the George Polk Award, the Edward R. Murrow award, and the Merriman Smith Memorial Award for excellence in presidential coverage. A graduate of Yale and a Fulbright Fellow, he lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife, Gloria Riviera, who is a crisis communications professional and journalist for ABC News, and their three children.

During the Vietnam War, Richard Nixon employed an unusual scare tactic in his efforts to reach a withdrawal—he led Vietnam to believe he was crazy enough to start a nuclear war, an approach he described as the madman theory. From his first days in office, President Trump has employed his own madman theory, from menacing North Korea with fire and fury to threatening withdrawal from NATO, leaving not just adversaries, but also U.S. allies and even his own advisors unsure of what he will do next. David Priess spoke with CNN's chief national security correspondent and anchor of CNN Newsroom, Jim Sciutto, who has analyzed Trump's foreign policy through this lens and written "The Madman Theory: Trump Takes On the World."

CNN's chief national security correspondent and anchor of CNN NewsroomJim Sciutto discusses the Nixon-era origins of the so-called "Madman Theory" and how it applies to President Trump’s unpredictable approach to foreign policy.  He reveals that the President’s intelligence team deliberately avoids bringing up Russia for fear of upsetting him and how this has lead to a dangerous ignorance of America’s number one geopolitical foe.  Jim delves into the President’s fraught relationship with China, how Trump went from "fire and fury" to "falling in love" with Kim Jung Un, and what the failed Hanoi summit taught him about the limits of personal diplomacy.  Plus shares how the Pentagon dangled oil money to keep the President from withdrawing from Syria, one source who makes the cryptic claim that Vladimir Putin is Donald Trump’s "honeypot," and what Trump’s golf game can tell us about his approach to foreign policy. As storms, tornadoes and flooding ravage the Midwest and The Plains and as a new and scary hurricane season approaches, more and more people rely on The Weather Channel and the Weather Group to provide them live coverage of major weather events. We count on up-to-the-minute, live weather storytelling to keep us abreast of the latest developments and whether we, or our friends and relatives, are in harm’s way. Most of us who watch the Weather Channel during times of live weather coverage rely on a woman we never see on camera and don’t know – Angela Massie. She is the vice president of live storytelling at The Weather Channel in Atlanta and coordinates the network’s live coverage across the nation during times of weather peril. She determines what mandates live coverage and how assets and talent are distributed to bring the best and broadest form of coverage. She came to the Weather Channel in 2014 as an executive producer and then became a senior executive producer before being promoted to vice president. Currently, the Weather Channel serves about 81 million American households every day and that number spikes higher during times of weather catastrophes. Massie traces her career path for this week’s Spectrum Podcast. She talks about how difficult it is to produce “LIVE” programming or news or weather events. She has had extensive experience in producing all types of live television. Before coming to the Weather Channel, Massie rose through the producing ranks at CNN Worldwide Headquarters in Atlanta. She gave us live programming on “CNN Newsroom,” “Live from…” and “Rick’s List.” She also was the executive producer of CNN Headline News’ “Evening Express.” For CNN, she produced live coverage of: the last space shuttle launch, the royal wedding of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, and the funeral of Pope John Paul II. Massie has already won the Dupont and Peabody broadcasting awards and has been nominated for a national Emmy for coverage of Hurricane Harvey.

It’s a persona at odds with her tortured childhood, where she watched her emotionally vulnerable mother fill their house with teetering piles of assorted “treasures.” But one thing has always united mother and daughter—their love of white dresses. From the dress worn by Mary’s mother when she became a nun and married Jesus, to the wedding gown she donned years later, to the special nightshirts she gifted Mary after the birth of her children, to graduation dresses and christening gowns, these white dresses embodied hope and new beginnings.

In October 2002, Mary returned to the U.S. to work for ABC News/ Good Morning America. Her time at GMA enabled her to cover presidential elections, Oscar races, Hurricane Katrina, the London bombings, royal weddings, the death of Pope John Paul II, and the ascendance of Barack Obama to national political power. It also enabled her to win a spate of awards, including five Emmys, two Edward R Murrows, a Peabody, a duPont, and a WGA Award. In 2016, Mary joined the Today Show, the morning program she grew up watching in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin- and the show she credits for making her want to become a TV journalist. In addition to being a decorated journalist, Mary is also a critically-acclaimed author. In September 2015, her first book, White Dresses: A Memoir of Love and Secrets, Mothers and Daughters, was published by HarperCollins. The book tells the story of Mary's decidedly complicated, yet fiercely loving family, through the white dresses that the women in the family wore on significant days in their lives. The book was critically acclaimed was a New York Times Best Seller.Mary frequently speaks to book and church groups, as well as to public libraries and book store audiences, about White Dresses - and about issues explored within the book, including hoarding, mental illness, nun abuse, and homosexuality. Her talks have been called "candid", "enlightening", "uplifting" and "eye-opening." Mary's mother was a compulsive hoarder - beginning when Pflum Peterson was a child. Erik Jensen on Earning Freedom podcast At the very tender age of 11, Erik Jensen was living in an abusive, single parent household with daily violence fueled by alcoholism. He sought escape on the streets, committing theft, selling and using drugs, and was always in trouble with the law until Erik found himself in some of the worst prisons in New York. From his late teens to mid-twenties Erik was convicted on an array of charges including Robbery in the Second Degree, Promoting Prison Contraband, and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 4th Degree. He ended up serving 12 years collectively in the New York State Department Of Corrections. He did his time at Greene, Franklin, Watertown, Bare Hill, Five Points, Attica, and in 2011-2012 at the now infamous Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York. It was there he became well acquainted with inmates David Sweat and Richard Matt. On June 6, 2015, the two convicted murderers pulled off one of the most daring prison escapes in recent history.             During his imprisonment Erik was witness to atrocities perpetrated against fellow inmates by several of the guards. He also observed abominable behavior inflicted on inmates by each other, convincing him that the U.S. penal system takes in the bad and instead of rehabilitating, it makes them worse.             Erik is a self-taught scholar in the field of prisoner transformation. He uses his own personal experience to revitalize the mind and spirits of men and women who have shared a similar path in life. Through his words, Erik illustrates that we are much more than the worst thing we’ve ever done, and that the potential for doing good resides within every one of us.               Given his vast knowledge of the Department of Corrections; Clinton Correctional Facility; David Sweat, Richard Matt and their escape; their accomplices, civilian worker Joyce Mitchell and guard Gene Palmer; plus the barbaric culture of the prison system, Erik Jensen is a consultant on an array of projects with television networks and major motion picture production companies. He is a producer for an upcoming Netflix series, based on the Clinton escape; directed by Jodie Foster, and Executive Produced by Bryan Zuriff and Brett Johnson of Ray Donovan and Mad Men.             Erik has been interviewed more than 40 times live on over a dozen networks, including CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, HLN, TWC, PIX11, WNYT13; plus numerous other news media, such as GQ, People, and Time magazines. He has appeared and played a prominent role in television specials: Nightline, Outside The Wall, The Great Prison Break, Inside Edition, Up Close with Marvin Scott, 360 Anderson Cooper, Outfront with Erin Burnett, At This Hour with John Berman and Kate Balduan, and Dateline: "The Accomplice" with Matt Lauer.             Erik continues to share his views with the world by consulting on disturbing issues in the prison system nationwide, such as corruption, physical and mental abuse, and the long-term effects of solitary confinement. He has participated in myriad televised debates hosted by award winning journalists such as Deborah Feyerick, Randi Kaye, and Jessica Schneider.             Erik is a regular guest speaker on numerous Dutchess County Legislator forums concerning criminal justice reform, and makes weekly guest appearances on County Legislator Joel Tyner’s radio show on WVKR 91.3 FM.             He is also frequently invited to the "Earning Freedom" podcast. A California based show created by Michael Santos that is broadcasted in jails and prisons nationwide.             SUNY New Paltz welcomes Mr. Jensen every semester to speak with students studying Criminology. He also volunteers at Redhook Residential Youth Facility, where he shares his story of recovery and redemption with juvenile delinquents.             Erik is currently a contributing writer at Unheard Voices magazine. See: www.unheardvoicesmag.com              He also volunteers with numerous criminal justice reform organizations including but not limited to: Cut50, Prisoner’s Legal Service, and Beacon Prison Action. Wh a t a n honor to meet this meg a -bestselling a uthor in person in Los A ngeles a nd cr a nk out a n interesting podc a st! Ashley has be en spreading the word about her two very important books for over a decade , speaking and consulting internationally to sports teams, business leaders, and parent and school groups. She also operates a cool non-profit tutoring program for inner city kids in LA. Her books , written with Stanford professor Po Bronson, have rocked our world and make us rethink the most basic notions about parenting and the nature of healthy competition. Interested researchers and readers are transcending dated and harmful cultural values and embraced the new possibilities comm unicated wonderfully by Ashley and Po. The first book was called Nurtureshock : New Thinking About Children. The world of Carol Dweck , Stanford professor and author of Mindset , was highlighted. The idea that this effusive praise, obsession with boosting self-esteem, and helicopter parenting to ensure kids don’t suffer or fail was called into question. Kids need healthy struggle and setbacks to grow and develop resilience and determination. They benefit from adopting a “growth mindset,” where the emphasis is on effort and improvement rather than results. The research from Nurtureshock was the inspiration for the next book, Top Dog. If you are interested in competition and peak performance in any area (business, athletics, parenting), this book will provide lasting insights and strategies to be the best you can be, and not succumb to the dangers of a lame, ineffective approach to competition. Interestingly, Ashley relates that she has been rethinking the emphasis placed on effort and instead prefers to focus on improvement. We all know how misdirected effort may not lead to improvement and can even be unhealthy—such as with an overtrained athlete or the college student who pulls all-nighters and eats Top Ramen in the name of delivering maximum effort. In these examples, excess effort or a narrow focus on effort alone will not lead to success or happiness. Reference my podcast about the Japanese Soccer Team ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2018/08/21/breather-the-japanese-soccer-teams-clean-locker-room-and-evolved-competitive-spirit/ ) and the Japanese cultural ethic of doryoku , translated as honorable effort. You could infer this means dispensing effort in a focused and productive manner to stimulate improvement. Ashley garnered attention years ago for stating that the long-standing practice of giving every kid a trophy is a bad idea. After much reflection and controversy, Ashley is more certain than ever that this is a really bad idea! Listen to her go off about the many ways in which our cultural trophy policy cheapens the experience for everyone. We also get into the groundbreaking article that changed my mindset and approach to parenting on the spot when I first read it in 2007. It’s called the Inverse Power of Praise and I did a blog post about it that I send to anyone who will listen. This article led to the NurtureShock book project. The article calls into question the self-esteem movement that has led to the widespread concerns about helicopter parenting today. Ashley talks about how to set rewards to generate optimum outcomes for competition. A local 5k promoting a healthy community (everyone gets a finisher medal, that’s fine), versus a contest to discover the most distinguished performers. A college application process for an Ivy League admission could be a good example: many competitors, few prizes. You will love this show and be compelled to grab these books and go in for a deep immersion.
