Announcement! If you're a Gaslit Nation supporter on Patreon, join us for the first ever Gaslit Nation Game Night this Friday at 8:30pm ET, organized by Gaslit Nation listeners. The game of the night will either be Codenames or Chameleon. The Zoom link is posted in the Victory Chat as well as this episode page on Patreon!  When it comes to the DNC Chair election on February 1st, the only choice is Ben Wikler, chairman of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin since July 2019. None of the other candidates, except for Ken Martin, the state chair of the Democratic Party in Minnesota, even come close. Why? Because, unlike Martin, Wikler has faced off with the worst of our national demons in Wisconsin—a state that's long been a laboratory for GOP autocracy, as detailed in Ari Berman's must-read book Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It. In this week's bonus show Q&A, shaped by our Democracy Defender-level supporters and higher, we make the case for Wikler and break down the dynamics of a race that could shape not only the future of the Democratic Party but the soul of America. We also dive into the People's March, formerly the Women's March, and announce the Gaslit Nation sign contest for the best protest sign! Join Andrea at the march in New York City at 10 AM on Saturday, January 18th—details to come! To find a People's March near you, or to help organize one if there isn't already one in your area, check out this handy guide: https://map.peoplesmarch.com/local If you didn't hear your question answered this week, keep an eye out for it soon as the Gaslit Nation Q&A continues! In this week's Gaslit Nation, Andrea and Terrell answer listeners' questions about Syria, Ukraine, and Georgia–and urgent lessons for us here at home.  Take a look at what's happening in countries like Georgia and Syria—resistance movements are growing against oppressive, authoritarian regimes backed by Russia. It's a struggle for freedom and self-determination, and it's all part of the same global fight. Americans can't keep pretending that foreign conflicts are somehow detached from our own issues. What's happening abroad affects us too, whether we like it or not. In Georgia, for example, the situation mirrors what's happening in Ukraine: ordinary citizens are pushing back against corrupt governments and trying to secure their future with the European Union. Meanwhile, in Syria, a surprise push by a rebel alliance has liberated several key areas from Assad's brutal dictatorship, propped up by Russia and Iran. Assad and his family fled to Russia, joining Ukraine's Trump, Viktor Yanukovych.  The left needs to take a long, hard look at the atrocities Russia is committing—not just in Ukraine, but around the world. And let's not forget that Ukrainians are fighting for their own agency, their right to choose their future, in a way that should inspire us all.  This week's bonus show, for subscribers at the Truth-teller ($5/month) level and higher, answers questions from our listeners at the Democracy Defender ($10/month) and higher, and looks at the potential for Trump to start an actual war with Mexico. Will America's Next President Bring Real Change in Foreign Policy?

The World Unpacked

Why is meaningful change in U.S. foreign policy is so difficult to achieve? This question is especially relevant with the U.S. presidential election just weeks away now, and analysts and policy makers all over the world are discussing how a Trump or Harris presidency might shift American foreign policy in the years to come. But how likely is it that we will see meaningful change at all? Historically, it has been incredibly challenging for presidential administrations to break away from entrenched foreign policy paths —even when the need for change seems obvious. Presidencies often start with a declaration of pivots and major strategic reorientation, these then get ground down by powerful bureaucracy, political pressures and human tendency to preserve the status quo. When change does happen, leaders often pay a high political price for it. Take, for instance, the example of the withdrawal from Afghanistan. In the end, it took two decades and much internal pushback before President Biden was able to officially make this happen - even though the decision had long had significant public support. In this week's episode, Sophia Besch sits down with Christopher Chivvis and Stephen Wertheim to discuss their research that dissects how strategic foreign policy change does happen despite pressures to maintain the status quo—and  what it would take for the next American president to enact such a change.Notes:Christopher S. Not All Votes Are Created Equal

As any schoolkid might tell you, US elections are based on a bedrock principle: one person, one vote. Simple as that. Each vote carries the same weight. Yet for much of the country's history, that hasn't been the case. At various points, whole classes of people were shut out of voting: enslaved Black Americans, Native Americans, and poor White people. The first time women had the right to vote was in 1919. The reality is that one person, one vote is far from how American democracy actually works. In fact, the political institutions created by the Founding Fathers were meant to constrain democracy, and that system is still alive today. Institutions like the Electoral College and US Senate were designed as checks against the power of the majority. What's more, the Supreme Court is a product of these two skewed institutions. Then there are newer tactics—like voter suppression and gerrymandering—that further erode democracy and often entrench the power of a conservative White minority. These are some of the conclusions from Mother Jones reporter Ari Berman in his latest book, Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It.In a deep-dive conversation with Reveal host Al Letson, Berman traces the rise of conservative firebrand Pat Buchanan and how he opened the door for Donald Trump. Buchanan made White Republicans fear becoming a racial minority. And he opposed the Voting Rights Act, which struck down obstacles to voting like poll taxes and literacy tests that had been used to keep people of color from the polls. Buchanan never came close to winning the presidency, but he transformed White anxiety into an organizing principle that has become a centerpiece of much of today's Republican Party. This is an update of an episode that originally aired in May 2024. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Sharon Lerner, writer covering health and the environment for ProPublica, to discuss her recent piece entitled “EPA Scientists Said They Were Pressured to Downplay Harms From Chemicals. A Watchdog Found They Were Retaliated Against.” Then, they speak with Ari Berman, national voting rights correspondent at Mother Jones, author of Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It, to discuss the recent attempts by Republican legislatures and voting commissions to change rules ahead of the 2024 election. First, Sam runs through updates on Israel's offensive on Lebanon, ProPublica's report on Blinken's coverup of Israeli war crimes in front of Congress, Harris' polling, Senate races, the execution of Marcellus Williams, a Haitian non-profit's case against Trump and Vance, Florida's education bans, corruption in Eric Adams' administration, the InfoWars auction, and the FBI report on dropping violent crime everywhere except anti-LGBTQ hate, before parsing a little deeper through Secretary of State Antony Blinken's active coverup in front of Congress, and John Kirby's poor attempt to address it. Sharon Lerner then joins, first stepping back to reassess her year-long coverage, beginning in 2022, of the system of management intimidation and pressure set up by the Trump Administration EPA's “New Chemicals” department, pushing scientists tasked with assessing the impact of new chemicals on human health and the environment to overlook issues, avoid deeper investigation, and even remove notes on them from any official reports, all serving to expedite corporations' ability to get these chemicals to market regardless of safety concerns. Lerner and Sam then look to the structure of the EPA as a whole, tracing how this active pressure trickled down from executives to lawmakers to management before looking to the recently released report from the Inspector General, outlining in broad strokes the system of intimidation and retaliation, as they unpack the slow-walking of any major change to the administration under Biden's presidency, and how that can change. Ari Berman then sets his targets on Georgia as he walks Sam through the state GOP's overwhelming effort to pre-emptively rig every step of the electoral system in the lead-up to the 2024 elections, with a particular focus on replacing the election boards with election-denying cronies to changes in mail-in ballot eligibility. After briefly touching on the role of RFK's ongoing ballot shenanigans in further threatening mail-in-enfranchisement – particularly in Wisconsin and North Carolina – Berman and Sam tackle an ongoing legal case out of Mississippi that has the potential to risk mail-in ballots nationwide if it makes it to to the Supreme Court before November, wrapping up the interview with a conversation on the need for Dems to emphasize communicating voting rights, encouraging voting, and challenging this effort head-on. And in the Fun Half: Sam first unpacks yesterday's state-backed killing of Marcellus Williams, walking through the myriad issues ignored by the Missouri government and Supreme Court in his case, the overwhelming push to stay the case, and his son's reflections on the day of his death. Bernie Moreno takes on abortion and accidentally alienates 50% of his base, Dan Osborn absolutely kills the PR push ahead of his election, and JD Vance walks into a supermarket… ouch. Vivek, Taibbi, and Anna Khachiyan wax poetic about Great Replacement theory, Alvaro from Waco unpacks the Dem's push in Texas and the ongoing death row case of Robert Robertson, Stephen in Dublin and West in North Carolina (respectfully) unpack some absurdities in recent left coverage, Bob from Indiana has a movie recommendation (Matewan!) and a question for the Harris campaign, plus, your calls and IMs!Follow Sharon on Twitter here: https://x.com/fastlernerCheck out Sharon's work at ProPublica here: https://www.propublica.org/people/sharon-lerner Follow Ari on Twitter here: https://x.com/AriBerman Check out Ari's work at Mother Jones here: https://www.motherjones.com/author/ari-berman/ Check out “Minority Rule” here: https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780374600211/minorityrule Become a member at JoinTheMajorityReport.com: https://fans.fm/majority/join Follow us on TikTok here!: https://www.tiktok.com/@majorityreportfm Check us out on Twitch here!: https://www.twitch.tv/themajorityreport Find our Rumble stream here!: https://rumble.com/user/majorityrep ort Check out our alt YouTube channel here!: https://www.youtube.com/majorityreportlive Join Sam on the Nation Magazine Cruise! 7 days in December 2024!!: https://nationcruise.com/mr/ Check out StrikeAid here!; https://strikeaid.com/ Gift a Majority Report subscription here: https://fans.fm/majority/gift Subscribe to the ESVN YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/esvnshow Subscribe to the AMQuickie newsletter here: https://am-quickie.ghost.io/ Join the Majority Report Discord! http://majoritydiscord.com/ Get all your MR merch at our store: https://shop.majorityreportradio.com/ Get the free Majority Report App!: http://majority.fm/app Check out today's sponsors: Shopify: Upgrade your business and get the same checkout brands like Alo, Allbirds, and Skims use. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Ari Berman, national voting rights correspondent at Mother Jones, author of Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It, to discuss President Biden's recent proposals to reform the Supreme Court. Then, he speaks with Adam Johnson, co-host of the Citations Needed podcast & writer at The Column newsletter on SubStack, to discuss labor unions efforts to gain commitments from the Harris campaign to stop sending military aid to Israel. Then, he speaks with Seth Fleisher & Emily Baldwin, co-founders of the political action organization Walk the Walk! First, Sam runs through updates on Israel's major escalations in Iran and Lebanon, US Presidential polling, student debt relief, Project 2025, JD Vance's misogyny, the Trump would-be-assassin, elections in Arizona and Venezuela, reports on the mass deaths of native children at US boarding schools, rising homelessness and rents, and the passage of COSA, before diving into the major developments in Kamala Harris' Veepstakes. Ari Berman then joins, diving right into the complete untethering of the 6-3 conservative majority US Supreme Court from any jurisprudence or ideology, and it's all-around corruption exposed over the last few years. Berman then looks to Biden's new platform for reforming the Supreme Court, taking a moment to walk through each of the three major elements on this agenda, including 18 year term-limits with 2-years between nominations, an ethics code, and a constitutional amendment to undo the recent decision on presidential immunity. Adam Johnson and Sam then walk through the major push by unions in recent months to challenge the Biden Administration's support for and arming of Israel's ethnic cleansing of Gaza, with Shawn Fain going as far as to consider the UAW unendorsing Biden, before looking to the current moment, tackling their response to Harris all-but taking Biden's place on the ticket. Stepping back, Adam walks through the evolution of the Biden Administration's approach to the “ceasefire” demand, from banning the use of related terms outright to now using the hope of one (and the supposed negotiations) as a tantalizing carrot, redefining the conversation away from the US using their leverage to push a cessation of hostilities to now what is largely an Israeli PR strategy focused on the supposed “facilitation” of negotiations, despite the obvious bad faith intentions. Wrapping up, Johnson assesses the narrative around Harris' approach to Gaza, why her stance remains unclear to both unions and the public, and what to expect from her campaign moving forwards. Lastly, Seth Fleisher and Emily Baldwin join in as they walk through Walk the Walk's project to refocus energy, labor, and money to grassroots, progressive organizing, tackling the major dearth of funds and labor in the vast majority of down-ballot races, as well as the importance of relying on existing grassroots organizations to build on and strengthen networks of community trust and civil engagement. After expanding on the major races and organizations they are working with during this election cycle, they wrap up with what we can do to join the effort. And in the Fun Half: Sam watches Tim Pool fantasize about his Lord and Savior Donald Trump and Jesse Watters walks through the bio-political process of gender fluidity. Mark Robinson questions the low-effort selfishness of Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, which JD Vance expands on, and Hung Cao discusses saving Virginia from Monterey Bay Wiccans. This week on CounterSpin: Donald Trump said, on Fox & Friends in 2020, that if voting access were expanded, meaning easing of barriers to voting for disabled people, poor people, rural people, working people … if voting were made easier, Trump said, “You'd never have a Republican elected in this country again.” Why wouldn't news media label that stance anti-democratic and shelve any so-called good-faith partisan debate? Call for the multiracial democracy we need? Illuminate the history that shows why we aren't there yet? Ari Berman has been tracking voter rights — and why “one person, one vote” is not the thing to memorize as a definition of U.S. democracy — for many years now. He's the national voting rights correspondent for Mother Jones. His new book, which we discuss, is called Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People — and the Fight to Resist It.   The post Ari Berman on Minority Rule appeared first on KPFA.

Minority rule – by which a few get to decide the outcomes for many – is eroding American democracy at nearly every level, according to veteran journalist Ari Berman, author of Minority Rule: the Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People―and the Fight to Resist It. In this episode, host Kai Wright talks to Berman about how the U.S. has been in a push-and-pull between oligarchy and democracy since 1787 when the Founding Fathers put systems in place, like the Senate and the Electoral College, to prevent the will of the people from having too much influence in national government. Berman explains how these systems have laid the foundation for modern day partisanship, making the future of America's democracy seem increasingly shaky as right-wing political leaders engage with authoritarian ideals, and as the will of the people is curtailed by the wants, fears and needs of white, wealthy Americans.Berman is the national voting rights correspondent for Mother Jones and a reporting fellow at Type Media Center. The US holds one national popular vote and the Republican party has won that vote once since 1988, that's 36 years. Yet they've held the presidency nearly 12 of those years. Since Nixon, they've appointed 15 Supreme Court justices, to the Democrats 4. I speak with ARI BERMAN about his new book, MINORITY RULE: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It. I learned a lot about the pulling back from direct democracy by the framers between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The GOP exploits the resulting Constitutional weaknesses. But first, Ari Berman joins the podcast to discuss his new book “Minority Rule, the Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People and the Fight to Resist It.” Berman describes the way in which the Founding Fathers, in an attempt to establish majority rule but at the same time protect the rights of the minority of Americans, began a long road to today, as Republicans push forward initiatives that he asserts thwart the rights of the majority of people in the country. Then, University of Georgia political science professor Charles Bullock expands on Ari Berman's observations, citing gerrymandering and other mechanisms used to maintain single-party power in Georgia. A governing majority in the United States has never required an actual majority of the voting population. And the tactics of achieving minoritarian control are always shifting. A minority of Americans are now set on thwarting the will of the people through voter suppression, gerrymandering, and even election subversion. In his new book, Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People — and the Fight to Resist It, voting rights reporter Ari Berman charts the rise of this antidemocracy movement in the face of the country's significant demographic and political shifts. As any schoolkid might tell you, U.S. elections are based on a bedrock principle: one person, one vote. Simple as that. Each vote carries the same weight. Yet for much of the country's history, that hasn't been the case. At various points, whole classes of people were shut out of voting: enslaved Black Americans, Native Americans and poor White people. The first time women had the right to vote was in 1919. This week's show is about a current version of this very old problem. For this episode, Reveal host Al Letson does a deep dive with Mother Jones correspondent Ari Berman about his new book, “Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People – and the Fight to Resist It.”We go back to America's early years and examine how the political institutions created by the Founding Fathers were meant to constrain democracy. This system is still alive in the modern era, Berman says, through institutions like the Electoral College and the U.S. Senate, which were designed as checks against the power of the majority. What's more, Berman argues that the Supreme Court is a product of these two skewed institutions. Then there are newer tactics – like voter suppression and gerrymandering – that are layered on top of this anti-democratic foundation to entrench the power of a conservative White minority.Next, we trace the rise of conservative firebrand Pat Buchanan and how he opened the door for Donald Trump. The final segment follows successful efforts by citizen activists in Michigan to end political gerrymandering and reinforce the democratic principle of one person, one vote. Berman argues that this state-based organizing should be a national model for democratic reform.  Support Reveal's journalism at Revealnews.org/donatenow Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to get the scoop on new episodes at Revealnews.org/newsletter Connect with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram

Gaslighting as Method and Ways to Resist It is the second conversation in a series centering the Warscapes anthology Insurgent Feminisms: Writing War (Daraja Press). Featuring Suzy Salamy, Suchitra Vijayan and Bhakti Shringarpure. Gaslighting is a term used to describe the process by which a person is manipulated into questioning their own reality. Defined as a "conscious intent to brainwash," gaslighting is understood as occurring primarily in interpersonal situations of domestic abuse. Victims of gaslighting find themselves questioning their sense of reality as well as their memories; they experience high levels of anxiety and they may begin to lose trust and confidence in themselves. Gaslighting can happen in several different ways: denial, mockery, jokes and trivialization, withholding information, stereotyping, and repetitively countering observations and memories. Without doubt, gaslighting becomes an important concept to understand the feelings, stories and experiences of women, queer, transgender and racialized individuals. As the #MeToo movement grew with hashtags such as #BelieveHer trending, many of the narratives pointed to victims being told for years that they had misread a situation or were overthinking flirtatious advances. Victims of gaslighting found themselves feeling increasingly guilty and wondering if they were responsible for having caused their own abuse and trauma. Increasingly, the phrase "structural gaslighting" has also come into use to explain the effect of ingrained, harmful stereotypes that refuse engagement with marginalized people and continually dismiss their views, beliefs and ideas. Those that challenge the status quo are deemed abnormal, as exaggerating the problem, and often as imagining things. Women are told to "lighten up;" Black women are told they are "too angry;" individuals wishing to emphasize their pronouns are deemed as pushy and petty; migrants are often accused of not trying hard enough to assimilate; the list of such harms is long and the effects of these societal and political abuses is manifold. This is a timely topic because many of us who are deeply concerned about the unfolding horrors in Palestine are being gaslit constantly not only in our own domestic and work environments but also on a broader level by the media and by politicians. Panelists will unpack gaslighting on interpersonal levels but also something that disproportionately affects marginalized individuals and communities, and will try to come up with clear ways to resist these structures and preserve one's self-confidence, moral compass. and belief systems. Happy Monday! Sam is back from vacation! He and Emma speak with Ari Berman, national voting rights correspondent at Mother Jones, to discuss his recent book Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's imminent invasion of Rafah (in the wake of weeks of bombing), Israeli officials' fears of ICC arrest warrants, the absurd debate over university student activism and whether silencing free speech is the true free speech, Mike Johnson's speakership, presidential polling, the UAW, and Kristi Noam's screwing of the pooch, before parsing deeper through the insane response from University administrators at Columbia, Emory, and Ohio State, threatening their students with eviction, violence, and more in the face of protests. Ari Berman then joins, as he, Sam, and Emma touch on his history reporting on voting rights with MR, and how “Minority Rule” serves as a culmination of his reporting on modern-day efforts at the GOP's undemocratic takeover and how they play into an ever-shifting battle between democracy and elite rule. Stepping back, Berman looks to America's inception and the central role the US Constitution played in bolstering the US' constraints on popular rule, with institutions like the Senate, Supreme Court, and Electoral College all serving to act as checks to the people's power of democracy and federalism. Moving forward, Abe walks Sam and Emma through some of the major periods of democratic progress and (largely racist) backlash in US history, including reconstruction's shift towards a multi-racial democracy and the following minoritarian overthrow in the South that established Jim Crow rule, and the major progress made under the Civil Rights Movement – which saw a variety of voting-right legislation passed over the 1970s – and the GOP's reaction that we're still dealing with today. Parsing deeper into this latter era, Berman looks at the role played by folks like Pat Buchanan in pushing the GOP back toward their project of minoritarian rule, establishing the blueprint of the GOP's takeover of the undemocratic institutions of US politics and the establishment of a network of think tanks and foundations to shape the generations to come. After an extensive conversation on how the politics (and normalization) of Pat Buchanan paved the way for a Donald Trump presidency, grounded in culture war and white resentment, and how the GOP's takeover of Wisconsin politics at the outset of the 2010s provided an easy laboratory for anti-democratic policy, Berman wraps up the interview with a plea for the Democratic Party to recognize and strategize against these institutional threats to US democracy, and how refusing to do so paves the way for the likes of Donald Trump. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through Kristi Noam's big swing at the Vice Presidency – and the bodies she left in her wake – watch JD Vance continue to represent his cuckstituency, and bask in Hasan's evisceration of a British genocide apologist. Morning Joe has flashbacks to his pro-Vietnam War days, Atrios tackles the hypocrisy of the “look what you made me do,” response to protestors, and Dave Rubin doesn't see the issue in his criticism of marginalized groups' support for Palestine. With growing campus protests against the U.S. backing Netanyahu's genocidal war to cling to power and the Democratic National Convention returning to Chicago this summer, it's hard not to think of 1968. As this week's guest, Ari Berman of Mother Jones, explains, the Founding Fathers of America set us up for cycles of fascism vs. democracy, cynicism vs. idealism.   It's important to be aware of how social movements can be hijacked and weaponized. For that, read the essential 2017 piece in The Guardian by Micah White, a co-founder of Occupy Wall Street, on how Russia tried to co-opt him. While there's a long history of the Left being weaponized by foreign adversaries, as the film Mr. Jones reminds us, the magnitude of campus protests across America is a morally clear line, like the Vietnam War and Iraq War protests before them.   As we head into the spring of the most important year for America, one where democracy must prevail, it's important to take time to reflect on radical self-care. As empathy becomes the growing demand of our collective, activism must include self-care, one of the most important acts of resistance, as Angela Davis in our opening clip reminds us. This week's bonus show reflects on that and urges our listeners to reach out to an old friend to reconnect and re-energize. You will be glad you did, as we get closer to the ticking clock of November 5th.    In this week's bonus show, Ari Berman of Mother Jones, author of the must-read book Minority Rule, joins the long list of guests to take the Gaslit Nation Self-Care Q&A, producing some surprising answers and a rallying call, for Ari, along the way.     Join the conversation with a community of listeners at Patreon.com/Gaslit and get bonus shows, all episodes ad free, submit questions to our regular Q&As, get exclusive invites to live events, and more! How do we protect ourselves from a corrupt Supreme Court? How can the gerrymandering crisis be stopped? What were the Founding Fathers thinking? Can the American Experiment survive?    Ari Berman of Mother Jones stops by Gaslit Nation to discuss his new book Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People―and the Fight to Resist It. Berman shares insights into the troubling compromises that made the U.S. Constitution, the Koch-funded far-right plan to turn America into a dictatorship, GOP laboratories of autocracy in swing states like Wisconsin, what an American dictatorship would look like, and how to avoid that fate this November and beyond.   This week's bonus show includes a look at the growing campus protests over Israel's genocide in Gaza, Republican "free speech" hypocrisy, the need for radical self-care to build movements, and Ari Berman's take on the Gaslit Nation Self-Care Q&A, leading to some surprising answers. House Speaker Mike Johnson, self-proclaimed champion for human rights and freedom, and enemy of dictators everywhere, inched closer to getting Ukraine aid after eight months of successfully delaying it, empowering Russia's genocide. Kremlin state TV repeatedly praised Johnson for assisting their brutal invasion, which, as discussed in this week's bonus show, emboldened Iran to unleash a shocking swarm of drones and missiles against Israel. The Ukraine aid package still faces delays, thanks to MAGA, and will have to go back to the Senate before it reaches President Biden's desk. The Trump-proposed changes, of structuring some of the aid as a loan, can be forgiven by the President, including partial loan forgiveness by Biden on his way out, should he lose the election. If Trump wins, he could force Ukraine to repay what's left of the loan and refuse to send ATACMS, the long-range missiles that have made Ukraine effective at blowing up Russian planes and other military targets that slaugher civilians. The compromise in this aid package, far less than what Ukraine actually needs to win the war, adds to the urgency to ensure Trump loses the electoral college. It's going to be a nailbiter, for America and the world.  This week's bonus show includes reports that Paul Manafort is back to help Trump (and Russia) win the 2024 election. Russian mafia expert Olga Lautman and analyst Monique Camarra of the Kremlin File podcast join Andrea to discuss Manafort's dark arts and how they may help Trump and Russia illegally hijack our democracy once again. And what they're really trying to do is change the will of the people from the top down. Now, there's no democratic mandate for this. So, governments are sneakily using pre-conscious subliminal and covert techniques to change the way we behave, to make us model citizens. And maybe it's supposedly in our best interests, but we haven't been consulted upon it.”In this episode, I sit down with Laura Dodsworth, one of the first journalists to expose COVID-era government manipulation and how “nudge units” used fear to change behavior.“I feel it and I think I know a lot of people do—this feeling of something quite dark brewing, socially and politically. There's a feeling of a net tightening and of truth being squashed, of more surveillance, more censorship, institutions captured by woke ideology,” says Ms. Dodsworth. We discuss the new book she co-authored: “Free Your Mind: The New World of Manipulation and How to Resist It.”“Your mind is wonderous. You do deserve to be sovereign of it. And you can be in charge of your own decision-making capability. Israel and Evangelicals [TEASER]

In this week's bonus show, we dig into Israel and evangelicals, two fellow travelers that shaped U.S. politics and the world together. Many evangelicals believe God will protect Israel, as long as they accept the Lord Jesus Christ as their savior, or they'll burn in hell with other nonbelievers when Jesus returns. That means the destruction of Israel, a Jewish state. Digging into Speaker Mike Johnson, a staunch evangelical, and the other MAGA Christian nationalists blocking aid to Ukraine in the House, it turns out Ukraine also plays a role in evangelical “end times” prophecy. The path of the destruction of Israel goes through Ukraine, according to Pat Robertson and other evangelical leaders featured in the show notes. Does Johnson believe this?    Johnson proudly proclaimed his worldview is the bible, telling Fox News: "Someone asked me today in the media, they said, 'It's curious, people are curious: What does Mike Johnson think about any issue under the sun?' I said, 'Well, go pick up a Bible off your shelf and read it. That's my worldview.” Johnson was featured in a German documentary about taking his daughter to a purity ball where she signed a pledge to never have sex before marriage. Purity balls are seen as dehumanizing to young girls and women   Pat Robertson, one of the most consequential evangelical leaders to build white Christian nationalists into a political force, taking over the GOP, claimed in a video featured in this week's bonus show, the path to Israel's destruction begins with Russia's destruction of Ukraine. Ray Comfort, another evangelical minister with a large social media following, wrote the book Russia Will Attack Israel, and plays up Russia's war in Ukraine as “end times” prophecy. David Jeremiah, the evangelical pastor of a megachurch, also promotes this idea in his work. The argument goes: Putin is a tool of God to raise the forces of evil against Ukraine on Russia's path to waging war against Israel. In their logic, Ukraine must be destroyed so the final battle of good vs. evil can begin, ushering in the return of Jesus.    Obviously Christian nationalists like Johnson and others in the MAGA cult blocking aid to Ukraine are motivated by power and money. They align with strongmen like Trump to consolidate their support and enrich themselves. Both Putin and Orban used Christianian nationalism to entrench their regimes. Johnson was caught taking Kremlin-linked donations in 2018, as discussed in the recent bonus show for Patreon subscribers, The Kremlin Owns Mike Johnson.    Russia does its part to feed into these “end times” fever dreams. The philosopher Aleksandr Dugin, Russia's Steve Bannon, recently said, "Jerusalem will be a Russian city or it will not exist at all.” As Trump's white Christian nationalist base cheers on Putin's genocide in Ukraine and Netanyahu's genocide in Gaza and the West Bank, Russia oppresses and kills evangelicals in occupied Ukraine, according to a recent PBS Newshour report, and Christians are increasingly harassed and pushed out by ultra-Orthodox Israelis.    The persecution of fellow Christians may likely mean nothing to Johnson if he shares the belief that accelerating global conflicts will ultimately bring back Jesus. What he has made clear through his words and actions is that he takes the bible literally, like many evangelicals. With Ukraine increasingly in the crossfire of “end times” prophecies, spun in megachurches and their disinformation echo chambers, we have to come to terms that we're up against a doomsday cult, not a political party. Biden cannot shame or reason with these people. He must work around them to save Ukraine.    Contact your rep today through this site by a Gaslit Nation listener and demand they ensure the discharge petitions are signed, successfully forcing a vote on Ukraine aid: https://helpukrainewin.com/   ***   Thank you to everyone who attended the Make Art Workshop: The Business Side of Things on Thursday April 11. David's most recent book that is: 'Making Monsters, The Uncanny Power of Dehumanisation'. David joined me to provide his expert opinion on dehumanisation we are witnessing as part of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.    Key Topics Covered: Dehumanisation and Its Roots: David delves into the psychological and social aspects of dehumanisation, explaining how it serves as a precursor to violence. Israel-Hamas Conflict: A focus on the risks and implications of dehumanisation in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Prove It...Your Reality – Romans 12:2c 6. Humble It... Your Opinion – Romans 12:3 7. Remember It... Your Diversity – Romans 12:4-5 8. Use It... Your Gifts – Romans 12:6-8 v6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; v7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; v8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. 9. Repost of my chat with David Livingstone Smith originally published on 09 Aug 2021. --- My guest today is David Livingstone Smith, who is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of New England. He has authored nine books with his more recent titles focusing on dehumanisation, race, and propaganda. His 2011 ‘Less Than Human: Why We Demean, Enslave and Exterminate Others' won the 2012 Anisfield-Wolf award for nonfiction. David's most recent book ‘On Inhumanity: Dehumanization and How to Resist It' was published by Oxford University Press in 2020, and his tenth book, ‘Making Monsters: The Uncanny Power of Dehumanization' will be published by Harvard University Press later this year. He has been featured in prime-time television documentaries, is often interviewed and cited in the national and international media and was a guest at the G20 economic summit in 2012. As many listeners will know, David is a leading thinker in this field, and has influenced much of our understanding of dehumanisation. We had a wide-ranging discussion and covered topics such as: David's motivation behind his research focus Race as a cultural construct The view one is ‘marinated' in, is what one perceives as ‘real' Different races vs. human variation Race vs. Ethnicity Assigning values to lives and the psychological cost of it Overcoming the resistance to killing in war Racilising and Dehumanisation as a protective mechanism in war The cost of desensitisation to killing Definition of dehumanisation Psychological, political and social dimensions of dehumanisation Why we're all vulnerable to the process of dehumanisation Dehumanisation is not a choice, but something that happens to us The power of the environment and social forces The need to assist soldiers ‘cleanse' after killing on battlefields The need to understand why atrocities in war occur The ‘Essence' of being human ‘Making Monsters' The need to face our ‘past' to understand our ‘today' If you've enjoyed this episode, I would appreciate it if you could share it and tag @thevoicesofwar so that I can say hello.

What happens in our minds when we dehumanize others, and how can we resist it? These are the kinds of questions David Livingstone Smith, author of the book, On Inhumanity: Dehumanization and How to Resist It, has found himself asking throughout his career.  Most of us are familiar with events of mass violence in recent history, such as the Holocaust, slavery in America, and the Rwandan genocide. David wants to know what motivates us to commit these atrocities. By studying dehumanization, he's learned what a powerful tool it is. He explains, "If people can convince others that those whom they wish to harm are not really human beings at all, but are, in fact, dangerous animals, then this makes it acceptable to harm them." David helps us unpack dehumanization's building blocks, including the dangerous myths of race science and biological hierarchies. And he shares how each of us can resist the urge to dehumanize. To begin, he urges us to recognize that no one is immune: "If politicians scare us or flatter us into thinking of others as, essentially, less than human, we're all capable of doing terrible things.  David Livingstone Smith is Professor of Philosophy at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine. He has written or edited eight books, including Less Than Human: Why We Demean, Enslave and Exterminate Others, which won the 2012 Anisfield-Wolf award for nonfiction. If we use AI to write our favorite music for us, will we lose the ability to write music ourselves? If an AI coach keeps divorced parents from arguing by text, can they get along without it? If the only novels and screenplays that get a green light are the ones that AI believes match up with past hits, will we wind up reading and watching the same thing over and over? In this conversation, NBC’s Jacob Ward, will describe the loop: the endless feedback cycle of pattern-recognition that threatens to collapse the complexity of human behavior into a predictable set of patterns across politics, entertainment, relationships, and art itself. Why is the loop so powerful? Why do companies keep empowering it? And what can we, as private citizens, do to resist its pull? Jacob Ward is a Berggruen Fellow at Stanford's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS), co-sponsor of this talk. Jacob Ward is technology correspondent for NBC News, where he reports on-air for Nightly News with Lester Holt, MSNBC, and The TODAY Show. The former editor-in-chief of Popular Science magazine, Ward was Al Jazeera’s science and technology correspondent from 02013 to 02018, and has hosted investigative documentaries for Discovery, National Geographic, and PBS. As a writer, Ward has contributed to The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Wired, and many other publications. His ten-episode Audible podcast, Complicated, discusses humanity’s most difficult problems, and he’s the host of an upcoming four-hour public television series, “Hacking Your Mind,” about human decision making and irrationality. Ward is a 02018-19 Berggruen Fellow at Stanford University’s Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, where he’s writing The Loop: Decision Technology and How to Resist It, due for publication by Hachette Book Group in 02020. The book explores how artificial intelligence and other decision-shaping technologies will amplify good and bad human instincts.

Greetings 9Mind Sacred Sisters. Peace, protection, prosperity and most of all wisdom be upon we all and those we love. Let's dicuss briefly why all these YOUNG Black Males are being "ASSASINATED" and what our proper response as Black People SHOULD BE as opposed to what we are actually doing. Are Black People in a race war a religious war or both? And if so do they know it? Blacks seem to have a strog love for the book called the BIBLE but many seem to almost casually overlook that it is a book about WAR.   Whether the war be spiritual or physical African Americans seem to have a hard time accepting that they have been at WAR and choose to take a, "WE AINT FIGHTING BACK," approach to this dillemma that does not work to our advantage at all.   http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/shocking-pictures-philando-castiles-blood-10673065 Now I have alrady pointed out on a prior show that BLACK is a science term meaning dominate genetics and WHITE is a science term meaning recessive gentics and pitting one against the other is a control mechanism the ELITE has come up with in order to keep both groups maintained and under control so both groups can be easily EXPLOITED and KILLED. WHO ARE THE GLOBAL ELITES - is a question that both white and black should ask themselves and then ask, "ARE THEY USING BOTH OF US AGAINST THE OTHER?" and if so, "WHY?" Whats the END GAME? Well we KNOW the answer to that is WORLD DOMINATION!!! The question is, why are the Black & White races going along with this insideous plan of humane global SLAVERY & suffering and are we deserving of what we are getting if we are unwilling to RESIST IT?   https://twitter.com/El_Shiloh9 https://www.facebook.com/el.maat.73
