In  this episode, I join jazz bassist, composer, and bandleader Omer Avital in his beautiful, intimate studio in Brooklyn, NY. Born in Givatayim, Israel, to Moroccan and Yemeni parents, Omer studied classical guitar from age 11 before eventually shifting to acoustic bass. We talk about his 1992 arrival in New York, where he shook up the city playing in groups with jazz legends Roy Haynes, Jimmy Cobb, Kenny Garrett, and Rashied Ali. We discuss his musical influences and the importance of learning about the elders and jazz masters who paved the way for him, as well as politics in the Middle East and how he views it all as an artist. Lastly we consider the Brooklyn oasis he created called Wilson Live. Founded in 2018, Wilson Live provides a platform that enables local artists to document and present their work in an easy and effective way, all while forming a musical community in the heart of the borough. Wilson Live hosts weekly musical happenings with great homemade food by its culinary curator, Yoav Adereth.https://www.omeravital.com

When you find like-minded artists who appreciate each other's talents, you have a winning combination. Sometimes it’s the accident that makes the music. It’s called working with what you have.   BIOGRAPHIES::  SON LUX BIO: From the start, Son Lux has operated as something akin to a sonic test kitchen. The Academy Award® and BAFTA-nominated band strives to question deeply held assumptions about how music is made and reconstruct it from a molecular level. What began as a solo project for founder Ryan Lott expanded in 2014, thanks to a kinship with Ian Chang and Rafiq Bhatia too strong to ignore. The trio strengthened their chemistry and honed their collective intuition while creating, releasing, and touring six recordings, including Brighter Wounds (2018) and the triple album Tomorrows (2021). The result is a carefully cultivated musical language rooted in curiosity and balancing opposites that largely eschews genre and structural conventions. And yet, the band remains audibly indebted to iconoclastic artists in soul, hip-hop, and experimental improvisation who themselves carved new paths forward. Distilling these varied influences, Son Lux searches for an equilibrium of raw emotional intimacy and meticulous electronic constructions. Son Lux has most recently scored the new Daniels film for A24, Everything Everywhere All at Once (March 2022). The full score album features new collaborations with Mitski, David Byrne, Randy Newman, and Moses Sumney, among others. Based in New York, Rafiq Bhatia is the first-generation American son of Muslim immigrant parents who trace their ancestry to India through East Africa. Early influences such as Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, and Madlib—as well as mentors and collaborators including Vijay Iyer and Billy Hart—prompted him to see music as a way to actively shape and represent his own identity, not limited by anyone else’s prescribed perspective. When Ian Chang describes his creative process, the phrase "third culture” keeps coming up. Born in the colony of Hong Kong in 1988, Chang has lived a nomadic life. Stationed out of New York for ten years and since relocated to Dallas, Texas, he built an impressive roster of progressive pop collaborators such as Moses Sumney, Joan As Policewoman, and Matthew Dear, among others, all while performing internationally and recording as a member of Son Lux and Landlady. Ryan Lott makes his home in Los Angeles but grew up all over the United States. Music was the one constant in his formative years spent at the piano. In addition to an extensive career writing music for dance, he has become a sought-after composer for advertising, television, and film. Lott’s feature film credits include The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (2014), Paper Towns (2015), and Mean Dreams (2017). He has co-produced and co-written music for and with Woodkid, Sufjan Stevens, and Lorde.   BIOGRAPHY: QASIM NAQVI  Qasim Naqvi is a drummer and founding member of Dawn of Midi. In this episode, I discuss legendary saxophonist John Coltrane with talented historians, writers, and, of course, musicians. One of those musicians, Charles McPherson, knew Coltrane personally. Coltrane's signature album A Love Supreme and his groundbreaking song "Giant Steps" are singled out for attention, and we talk about his classic quartet with Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, and Jimmy Garrison, as well as some of his other great bandmates, including Eric Dolphy, Pharoah Sanders, Rashied Ali, and Alice Coltrane. Coltrane's spirituality, its influence on his sound, and his passion and dedication to the horn permeate the interviews. Recommended listening:A Love Supreme                                              Blue TrainAfrica Brass                                                       ImpressionsGiant Steps                                                        MeditationsKulu Se Mama                                                  Black PearlsTransition                                                            Live at BirdlandDuke Ellington and John Coltrane     Interstellar SpaceBallads                                                                  Coltrane's SoundOut of This World                                          My Favorite Things

Alice Coltrane described the period after her husband John's death as ‘tapas' - a Sanskrit word meaning ‘a painful and austere ordeal'. This avant-garde fusion of modal post-bop jazz and traditional Indian drone music is the process of grief writ large - teaming up with fellow members of her late husband's band including ace drummer Rashied Ali and multiphonic saxophonist extraordinaire Pharoah Sanders. Together they pay tribute to John Coltrane's life with a surprisingly accessible experimental Hindu jazz odyssey that incorporates the harp, the oud and the tanpura named after Alice's spiritual king, Swami Satchidananda. “Journey In Satchidananda” is listed as #446 on Rolling Stone's 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time which means it's time for Liam Withnail and Christopher Macarthur-Boyd to enjoy it. They talk about everything from chocolate covered crisps to Ganesh, as well as Pharoah Sanders' recent collaboration with the electronic musician Floating Points and the London Symphony Orchestra, and the sexual assault allegations made against the titular swami. All that, plus Tattoo Woohoo/Tattoo Boohoo, Secret Posho, Unhinged YouTube Comment of the Week, and much much more. Enjoy!

Andrew Cyrille is the last man standing from the first wave of free jazz drummers. He and Milford Graves, Sunny Murray, and Rashied Ali really revolutionized jazz rhythm in their playing with Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, John Coltrane and other musicians in the early to mid '60s. Their influence was huge, and each of them brought a different perspective and instantly identifiable style to the music. What I hear when I listen to Andrew Cyrille, whether he's playing with Cecil Taylor or Anthony Braxton or in any other situation, is an incredible precision and consideration. He really seems to be thinking about every single strike and placing it with unbelievable care, even when he's playing ridiculously fast.In the last few years, Cyrille has been making some really interesting records as a leader for ECM. He started in 2016 with The Declaration of Musical Independence, which featured Bill Frisell on guitar, Richard Teitelbaum on synth, and Ben Street on bass, then he made Lebroba with Frisell and Wadada Leo Smith, and now he's got a new album out, The News, which features Frisell and Street again but has David Virelles on piano instead of Teitelbaum. And right before that string of records, in 2015, he was on guitarist Ben Monder's album Amorphae. And I also want to mention a record he did in 2017, Dione, a trio record with Ivo Perelman and Matthew Shipp. He's had an incredible career as a sideman, too, working with David Murray, Leroy Jenkins, Muhal Richard Abrams, Marion Brown, Horace Tapscott, Peter Brötzmann, and of course he's also one of the members of Trio 3 with Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman — they played at the 2021 Vision Festival, where he also presented a solo tribute to Milford Graves. We talk about Graves a lot in this interview, as well as Cyrille's approach to rhythm and to music generally, and a lot of other things. It's funny, the conversation has kind of a false ending, because I had been told by his publicist that he only wanted to talk for a half hour, and I negotiated us up to 45 minutes, and then at the 45 minute mark I started saying goodbye and thanking him for his time, and he showed no interest in stopping, so we kept going and probably could have talked for another half hour. If you do enjoy this podcast, please consider visiting patreon.com/burningambulance and becoming a subscriber. A charismatic and dynamic saxophonist and bandleader, Lakecia Benjamin fuses traditional conceptions of Jazz, HipHop, and Soul. Benjamin's electric presence and fiery sax work has shared stages with several legendary artists, including Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, The Roots, and Macy Gray. As the bandleader of Lakecia Benjamin and Soul Squad, she melds the vintage sounds of James Brown, Maceo Parker, Sly and the Family Stone, and the Meters with soaring, dance-floor worthy rhythms. Benjamin's grooves take the classic vibe to a whole new level with sultry alto saxophone creating something special on every cut - be it a smoldering late-night ambiance, or a forceful jazz intensity, or even the tight funk multi-horn harmony sections.A streetwise New York City native born and raised in Washington Heights, Lakecia Benjamin first picked up the saxophone at Fiorello LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. From there she joined the renowned jazz program at New York's New School University. However, even at that early stage, Benjamin was already playing with renowned jazz figures like Clark Terry and Reggie Workman, which introduced her to opportunities to play and tour with an array of artists such as Rashied Ali, the David Murray Big Band, Vanessa Rubin and James "Blood" Ulmer. With her deep jazz roots, she was soon in demand as an arranger and horn section leader, landing stints with such acclaimed artists as Anita Baker. Currently Lakecia Benjamin's latest album "Pursuance" is an intergenerational masterpiece that takes one on a journey through the lineage of the music with the works of John and Alice Coltrane. Benjamin pays homage to those who have come before by featuring innovative bandleaders of her generation, such as, Reggie Workman (Coproducer and playing ), Ron carter , Gary Bartz, Dee Dee Bridegwater, Meshell Ndegecello, Regina carter, Bertha Hope, Last poets, Greg Osby, Steve Wilson, John Benitez, Marc Cary, Marcus Gilmore, Keyon Harrold, Marcus Strickland, Brandee Younger, Georgia Anne Muldrow, and Jazzmeia Horn.

We may find it helpful to observe and model after an example that has achieved. Study the masterworks, they say. One is walking down the lonely Canadian streets whistling in the wind trying to find some clarity. Drifting in academia, directionless and yet so talented. The other a mass of Peaceful Volcanism. Endless ideas endless creativity endless compassion. That's it for the Other One because when these two strangers met it forged a musical and personal relationship that lasts till this day. One of my guests needed a burst of love through waves of spontaneous variation of chord patterns and progressions learning from my other guest in Divine Radiance even in those somber Canadian Winters. They played almost everyday in a small classroom until the teacher had taught enough and needed to move on. He had more people to teach and love and reinvigorate. They gigged a bunch in Toronto as a trio channeling music of peace and for peace. The student continued on to become an established figure in the music industry. He was the leader of The Worlds Most Dangerous Band which incorporated his roots music of Buffalo Springfield, Bobby Womack, Oscar Peterson and The British Invaders . He played jingles and sit coms and made albums of his is own. His teacher continued on his own trip in a contiguous orbit making music of his own. Sometimes on the guitar sometimes on the drums with its rhythms built inside the teachers constitution. Elevating, getting higher higher higher with series and sequences of ideas and musical messages that have stayed true in his student to this day as they collaborate with The late great Rashied Ali, Pharoah Sanders, Ra-kalam Bob Moses Cheryl Hardwick and Don Pate. The teacher was once offered an opportunity in the world of entertainment from Phil Ramone and said no. On a silver platter with all the trimmings and the teacher said no. His music is of Divine Radiance, of the heart a language spoken by all peoples, races, creeds, genders and origins. It spoke to his student who has long since gravitated to the Land of a Letterman which allowed him to play with all the greatest musicians like Earl Scruggs, Donald Fagan Yoko Ono Lou Soloff and his teacher. The musical Avant-Garde in general and Avant-Garde jazz, in particular, have either misleading or no connotations at all for most listeners (and non-listeners.) Say the words "free jazz," and most will think of musical anarchy—sonic chaos. And then they'll run for their lives. But when you consider the most prominent practitioners of so-called "free jazz"—the likes of John Coltrane (late period), Ornette Coleman, and Cecil Taylor—one thing should be clear: these are great musicians. So before you run, at least consider why they might be doing what they do, and what they're really doing. And also consider some of your favorite mainstream music may be imbued with musical ideas brought into the world by the so-called Avant-Gardists. The Choice By definition, there is not much in common in the music of artists like John Cage, John Coltrane, Edgar Varese, and Sun Ra. They are, after all, musical outliers: they don't hang out in the same clubs together. But all of them do have one thing in common: they made a choice, somewhere along the line, to create their own musical languages. Making such a choice can, of course, be artistically and personally dangerous, leading to ostracization within the artistic community, derision by fans, and diminished employment opportunities. So why do some do it, where others are satisfied to work solely within the "accepted" musical frameworks, seemingly passed on down for generations? Here's the thing: what we think of as the "accepted" frameworks are almost always languages created by some bold musical soul in the past. Now, I will be the first to admit that we will probably never walk around humming Cecil Taylor or Schoenberg tunes. This music is too extreme in its willingness to push boundaries to become part of the popular music culture in its own right. Seeping Into the Mainstream But these extremes of musical expression, if they are any good, do enter the musical lexicon, even if we're not consciously aware of them doing so. They have a way of filtering down into more mainstream forms, enriching them with surprising turns and details. Listen to the experimental elements in later albums by the Beatles, like Sergeant Pepper's, then go check out modern "classical" composers like Edgar Varése or Karlheinz Stockhausen. The Beatles did. Or, as a more recent example, check out Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly. Then check out late Coltrane,or Ornette Coleman. And movie music? Psychologically challenging scenes would be nowhere without Arnold Schoenberg's serialism. To be sure, Schoenberg created his twelve-tone system for reasons that had nothing to do with Hollywood (though ironically, he ended up living there) but the point is that once these new musical languages are let loose into the world, they find many "uses" beyond the composer's original intention. They simply add to to the ever-growing musical palette. So before you run away from the Avant Garde, seriously consider what it has given us. Artists Mentioned in this Podcast: Cecil Taylor: Conquistador certainly gets right down to it. Cecil's pianistic language is so distinctive as to be recognizable in about 3 seconds. If you're looking for traditional song structures, tunes, recognizable chord changes, etc., you've come to exactly the wrong place. But, try to get through it. There is a structure there, just not one you're used to. And, more importantly, it's simply beautiful music by an oft-maligned genius. Late Beethoven: I mentioned the Great Fugue(Grösse Fugue) in the podcast. It is really a strange and difficult piece of music. Fugues, in general, are intellectually challenging, and this is what's known as a double fugue (two themes interacting.) Also, check out Hammerklavier. The first movement is particularly challenging; the 2nd highlights an interesting trait in late Beethoven wherein he seems to be hinting at a swing (jazz) rhythm. What's up with that? Late Coltrane: Interstellar Space, is one of the last things John Coltrane recorded. It' a suite with just him and drummer, Rashied Ali. To say the least, it's relentless and challenging. But even as Coltrane was always pushing boundaries, there is always something of his lyrical side here. Carlo Gesualdo: The madrigal, Moro lasso al mioduolo, is so strange, and harmonically ahead of its time that people probably thought the composer was crazy. And he probably was. Edgar Varése: Perhaps Poem Eletronique sounds like so much noise and effects to our ears—sound design in modern terms, and pretentious sound design at that. But while it may not be something you put on to chill (or sing along with) it does prove my point about sounds of the Avant-Garde being incorporated into the mainstream. So you can easily hear elements of this being incorporated into a "chill vibe" if not being a very chilly vibe itself. I don't' know if that's good or bad. It just is. They released their debut self-titled album a couple of years ago to much critical acclaim. That record was very much rooted in the 80s, with elements of post-punk, dream pop, twee, and the C86 sound. It was a very saccharine heart-on-the-sleeve album, but balanced those elements with some darker tones and distortion. The sophomore album, Belong out on Slumberland Records, builds on the first album's elements and takes them further with a BIG and slick wall of sound production style, courtesy of Flood and Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, Depeche Mode). The overall sound of this album is early 90s guitar pop-rock, though there are some synth-washed tracks that recall Modern English and The Cure. Belong is a big-sounding, shimmering and slick, heart-breakingly blissful record that glides along beautifully and is enjoyable, though cloying at times. Dutch bassist Joris Teepe has lived in New York for the past 20 years, making a name for himself with everyone from Benny Golson to the late Rashied Ali. Recently, Teepe was commissioned to write music for both an orchestra and a big band in Europe. Those two experiences were so positive that he decided to start a big band in New York, and the result is the CD We Take No Prisoners (Challenge Records/Twinz Records, 2009). In this interview, conducted in Teepe's back yard in Englewood, NJ, Teepe talks about how Don Braden helped him learn to arrange for large ensembles; how he approaches the bass in the very different bands of Golson and Ali; and why he decided two decades ago to follow the "New York sound" across the water.
