In this episode of Weird Finance, host Paco de Leon, along with Stephanie Bucko and Cristina Livadary from Mana Financial Life Design (@manafld), dive into the essentials of thinking like a financial planner. They discuss targeting clients with growth mindsets, particularly those in helping professions and the sandwich generation. Stephanie explains the trade-offs for business owners aiming to keep taxes low versus paying more into Social Security and retirement plans. Christina shares insights on mastering personal finance and emphasizes the importance of understanding financial numbers. Cristina is a Certified Financial Planner® and Registered Life Planner®. Before Mana, she led sales and consulting efforts as a Regional Director with Russell Investments, where she consulted for and worked with over 10,000 financial advisors. After years of experience in the industry she grew dissatisfied with the wide disparities in knowledge, empathy, and skill within the advisor population. Cristina is a Bucknell University graduate, with a BA in Political Science and Spanish. She launched Mana with Stephanie in 2018 based on the belief that even greater success can be achieved by solving issues holistically - with individuals and their families. Since founding Mana, Cristina has been recognized for her accomplishments within the industry by leading organizations such as Investment News' 40 under 40 in 2020 and Investopedia's Top 100 Advisors in 2023. Cristina is living her own life plan, working in her dream career as a business owner and a financial life planner who does everything in her power to positively impact the lives of her clients. When she's not hard at work, you can find Cristina in the great outdoors. She is passionate about surfing and adventuring around the world with her family and friends. Stephanie is a Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Financial Analyst®. She graduated from Bucknell University with a BSBA in Accounting. Following her undergraduate education, she audited hedge funds in New York City with PricewaterhouseCoopers during the 2008 financial crisis, and then joined Man Group, the world's largest publicly traded hedge fund. At Man Group she served as a risk manager for six years, handling $15 billion in hedge funds. After years of serving banks, pensions and endowments, Stephanie became interested in bringing institutional quality services to a broader population. In 2018, Stephanie launched Mana with Cristina out of the realization that investment management is only a small piece of the services that individuals truly need in a financial advisor. Since founding Mana, Stephanie has been recognized for her accomplishments within the industry by leading organizations such as Investopedia's Top 100 Advisors of 2023. She is also a regular contributor to MyStockOptions.com, the financial advice industry's premier site for equity compensation. When Stephanie isn't educating herself on the markets or building complex spreadsheets, you can find her outside. Her favorite days are spent on the ski slopes, riding horses, and bird watching. If you've been a listener to this podcast for some time, you are likely well aware of the things to look for when hiring a financial planner. However, your friends may not be. If the topic of finances comes up, do the right thing: educate your friends and family on how to find a good advisor. What happens when you don't help your friends and family I recently had a client who came to me with a concern for a family member. Her cousin inherited a sizable sum of money and hired a financial advisor to assist with the logistics. My client expressed concern about a few aspects of the plan her cousin received, in particular, the number of life insurance policies she was encouraged to obtain, and did not understand some of the recommended investments. When it comes to Financial Advisors: Ask the Right Questions We talked about how my client could help her cousin with regard to asking the right questions of her new financial planner. This advice applies to anyone interested in obtaining financial services so I decided to share her story and a list of nine questions anyone should ask when hiring a financial advisor. I've also taken the liberty of including my answers as a reference point for any interview conducted with potential financial planners. 9 Questions to Ask When Interviewing a Potential Financial Advisor Are you a fiduciary? YES! I started my own Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) company, licensed in the states of MA, CA, and PA. These states require that I act as a fiduciary for my RIA and all my clients. What are your professional qualifications and credentials I am a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), a Registered Life Planner (RLP®) and a Chartered Financial Counselor (ChFC®). When I started my RIA in 2018, I immediately enrolled in the CFP® curriculum. It took a few years to complete the required college-level courses, pass the comprehensive exam, and fulfill the work requirement (2-3 years of full-time work in the industry). I have also taken the required coursework for the Registered Life Planner in 2021 - a year of classes and work provided by the Kinder Institute. How are you paid? What are your fees and how are they structured (hourly, flat fee, percentage of assets under management)? Are there any additional costs I should be aware of? I typically work with new clients in a flat fee arrangement to provide comprehensive planning. You can always find the latest fees and services listed right on my website. This is a one-time fee to cover all the initial planning together. Often, clients will engage me to provide ongoing services. This service is also a flat-fee, yearly arrangement, based somewhat on net worth and paid monthly. Again, those transparent fees are listed on my website. There are no other fees paid to me. Sometimes I will recommend services that have associated costs (estate planning, tax preparation, life insurance, etc) - but I always let you know the potential costs of these services, paid directly to other professionals, with no commissions or incentives for me. How long have you been working as a financial advisor? What is your experience with clients in situations similar to mine? I started my own RIA in 2018 and have been working with clients in the years since. I primarily work with busy parents who want to get organized with their finances to ensure a successful future for themselves and their children. What is your investment philosophy? How do you select investments for your clients? Can you explain your approach to risk management? I believe in using low-cost index funds, in a mostly buy+hold approach, which involves...

Nick's Bio:Nick Nauta has been practicing financial planning since moving to the Lansing area in 2006. After studying Financial Management and Economics at Northern Michigan University, Nick ventured into the financial planning industry. Having a young daughter and wife, Nick wanted to stay in Michigan. At the time he graduated, one of the few jobs available for a finance major was as a financial advisor.Nick struggled through his first few years in the profession. He relates the struggle to his early memories of money living in Spring Lake, Michigan. One of the things he learned about money when he was growing up was the people who seemed to have the most of it, weren't inherently happier than those who didn't. When he started in the financial advising industry, the profession appeared to be all about making money, something he didn't hold in high esteem. Some years later, around the time his son was born, Nick finally started to figure out his place in the financial planning world. He was challenged to answer the question of why he did what he did. Thinking back on his early memories of money, he concluded he was in the financial planning profession to help people realize their life goals.Nick enjoys giving back to the community as well as his profession. Meg's Bio:"I worked in the tech industry straight out of college. Through the first Dot Com Boom. Aaaaand through the crash. When I got laid off. Fun times. In my 30s, I got bored with my work in tech, and I changed careers into financial planning. I also got married, had two babies, moved cross-country twice, went back to school for a graduate degree, bought my first home, decided (I mean, not unilaterally) to have my husband retire from tech and become a stay-at-home dad, and started a business (this one!).I don't know if I'd have had the guts to do all of that without the money and flexibility my husband and I both got from the tech industry. Which is why I love working with women in their early to mid career in the tech industry. It's such an exciting time of life. And the opportunities are almost boundless. But it's so stressful. And oh my goodness, what do you mean “estimated taxes”?!I've learned that if we are intentional and if we do the work, our opportunities in the tech industry can help us build that fulfilling life we all crave. What else about me?Wellllll, I grew up in Newport News, Virginia. I went to Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where I majored in Economics, gained 10 pounds (unlimited Fruit Loops? whut?!), and learned to banish writer's block. I moved to the Bay Area in 1998 and worked as a technical writer for 10 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, mostly in the software-security sector. ‘Tis also, it should be noted, where I met my husband. We both worked on the Engineering team at a small startup. After I changed careers, I got my Master's of Science in Financial Planning from Golden Gate University. Having a growth mindset, prioritizing strength training, knowing your body type, and practicing regular self-care are the keys to taking control of your life. I'm joined by Dr. Weili Gray, a sleep and lifestyle physician who recently took one of my programs, to talk about the benefits she's seen in her life since adopting my recommended practices. Key Takeaway Prioritize your self-care to improve all areas of your life. What do you do for your health, fitness, and well-being? About Dr. Weili Gray Dr. Weili Gray is a board-certified sleep, integrative, and lifestyle medicine physician who practices in Vermont. She is also a Registered Life Planner and the founder of Dare to Dream Physician, where she offers life planning and hosts a weekly podcast. The Importance of Body Types and Strength Training I've just met Dr. Weili Gray, but honestly, I feel like I've known her for a long time. What I love most about her, and it's evident in this conversation, is how much she values her self-care. She also has a growth mindset which helps her continuously develop herself, her life, and her goals. Dr. Gray says that she never used to prioritize strength training, but now that she does include it in her movement routine, she's seeing the benefits across her life. Not only did she learn about the importance of strength training during my program, but Dr. Gray also learned about different body types! She really stresses how much her knowledge of her own body's needs developed when she started understanding the different body types out there. She also learned that actually making time for exercise is so beneficial to her as an ectomorph, the naturally slender body type. Prioritize Yourself for More Control in Your Life Dr. Gray explains why she prioritizes investing in herself. She says that it makes her a better person all around - she feels she improves in her roles as mom, wife, and physician when she practices self-care and puts her own needs first. When she practices regular self-care, including her four days of exercise, Dr. Gray says she feels more in control of her life. She's less stressed and better equipped to focus on everything she has going on. Dr. Gray also explains how she includes her family in her self-care routine and helps encourage their health and wellness, too. Finally, we talk about the importance of adopting a growth mindset. It's fine to know this stuff in principle, but to actually put it into practice takes dedication and a desire to grow as a person. Have you adopted a growth mindset to improve your life? How often do you include your self-care practices in your routine? What do you do? Let me know what works best for you in the comments on the episode page! In This Episode How strength training is a tool for wellness [4:45] The impact of learning about different body types [6:00] What happens when you make time to exercise [9:00] How investing in yourself impacts your goals and plans [18:00] How practicing self-care helps you feel more in control of your life [19:45] What happens when you include your family in your self-care journey [21:30] The importance of adopting a growth mindset [27:00] Quotes “What I learned and solidified in your program is that running is great, it's good to move your body. Any kind of movement, even walking, as you say. But that's not enough. It doesn't address all the muscle groups. This was my lightbulb moment. This is my new step. I'm going to uplevel myself as an athlete. Not only am I going to be a runner, but I'm also so excited that [strength training] is going to be my goal!” [16:11] “I already feel that I am a better person. I'm a better mom, I'm a better wife, I'm a better physician because I actually feel and prioritize, at least four days a week, my self-care. Really putting that first is so important.” [18:48] “The little things that we do every day add up to how we feel. I want to continue that!” [19:38] “Once you find your why, it's so much easier to make decisions, prioritize your life, design your life in a way that's in full alignment with who you are, what you really want, and why you're on Earth.” [30:28] Resources Mentioned Listen to the Dare to Dream Physician Podcast Find Dr. Weili Gray Online Follow Dr. Weili Gray on Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 96: Dr. Shillcutt on Discovering Self-Love Through Boundaries Episode 106: Honoring Your Authentic Body Episode 105: Go All-In On You

Series 6 ‘The Story of their Lives': Episode 2. Mark spent nearly four decades working in the law. Not intentionally. He studied law at college to give him three more years to consider what he really wanted to do. He then spent forty years planning an exit, even though exiting law is difficult in practice. Eventually, Mark realised that thinking about retiring from the law wasn't productive, so instead Mark thought about what he wanted to retire TO. In his book ‘And .. just like that: Essays on Life Before, During and After the Law' and in our conversation, Mark shares his story of deciding to move on to what he calls the next season of life. He explains why coaching support was so important in helping him transition successfully. As a coach, Registered Life Planner and trainer with the Kinder Institute myself, Mark was preaching to the converted. I've seen first-hand on many occasions how beneficial coaching is for people of all ages going through a major transition in life, so it was great to hear how this helped Mark.
What is the relationship between life and your money? Listen to this conversation we had with George Kinder to hear more about Life Planning. For years I have been fascinated about how our relationship with money influences what we do, and don't do in life. So much so that I have begun my own journey to become a Registered Life Planner, to compliment my technical financial qualifications and experience. I was delighted to chat with George Kinder, the 'godfather' of Life Planning within Financial Planning circles, and to share how it can help us all. I hope you find it insightful and useful in your own life/financial planning. Paddy. Links: Kinder Institute George Kinder Site Ryokan Poetry
