Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with David Steele, Founder + CEO of One Wealth Advisors and co-founder and Executive Chairman of Flour + Water Hospitality Group He highlights how applying the principles of service, goal-setting, and valuing people has shaped his journey from financial planning to building successful restaurant groups and supporting arts organizations. In today's episode, we discuss: True business success is rooted in serving others, not just making profits, because when work benefits others, it leads to deeper happiness and long-lasting impact, meaning you can feel good about making a difference while growing your business. Skills and principles are transferable from one industry to another, as David demonstrates by applying the same collaborative and organizational strategies across finance, food, and the arts, so you're not stuck on one path and can reinvent yourself in new fields with confidence. Pivotal life changes often start with self-awareness and honesty about dissatisfaction, like David's shift from being a successful stockbroker to a more fulfilling (but initially less lucrative) fee-based financial planning career. The lesson? It's okay, and sometimes essential, to pivot, especially if your values aren't being met. Caring for your team's well-being, even at a short-term cost, pays off through loyalty, retention, and greater future success, as shown by David's choice to keep his executive team during tough times, so you can build a lasting, supportive company culture.   Guest Bio David Steele, Founder + CEO of One Wealth Advisors and co-founder and Executive Chairman of Flour + Water Hospitality Group My primary role is as the co-founder and CEO of One Wealth Advisors, where we help people simplify their lives and achieve financial goals through Financial Life Planning. My guest today is called the father of financial life planning. Harvard educated economist turned CPA, turned financial advisor, George Kinder was looking for a deeper way to connect his clients to their values and goals in life. Rather than asking the standard, “When do you want to retire?”, he developed a three-question framework to help clients find their path to freedom and live the life they want to live. He now runs the Kinder institute where he trains other financial planners to help their clients in the same way. What would life look like if we used money to support our goals and dreams? His books and trainings are all about freedom. In his new book, A Golden Civilization and The Map of Mindfulness, Kinder draws on 50 years as a mindfulness practitioner, over 30 years as a mindfulness teacher, and his experience training financial advisors globally to challenge the basic concepts of economics, our understanding of democracy, of space-time, and our own hearts. His objective is to bring greater levels of freedom everywhere. Learn more about George Kinder on his website GeorgeKinder.com. Carl also shows us how this same thinking can help us avoid the handful of catastrophic mistakes that can, and often do, decimate financial futures.

To hear him speak about the human element within financial planning is inspiring, and absolutely necessary for all planners – whether you’re new to the field, or you’ve been a planner for decades. In the early 1990s, George Kinder and Dick Wagner partnered together to discuss: The skillset advisors needed to hone to in order to engage in financial life planning The philosophy behind financial life planning The ways that the human component of money can positively impact financial planning as a profession, the lives of financial planning clients, and our world as a whole In this episode, George covers a lot of ground. He discusses the beginning of the financial life planning movement within the FPA – from the founding of Nazarudin, to the growth of the movement, to how the initial financial life planning community worked to get the message out to the masses.   What You’ll Learn: What the beginning of the financial life planning movement looked like Who was involved at the onset of this movement How the Nazarudin movement began, and how it still exists today What the three phases of the financial life planning movement has looked like, and how it’s grown over time The “why” behind financial life planning The importance of developing a “one hour” life plan for everyone – not just those privileged enough to have access to advisors The different exercises that financial life planning moves through What questions are the “right” questions to wrestle with with your clients – questions like “What is it to be human?” or “What is it to be human in this world?”   FPA Retreat
