Mindfulness Skills (Part 2) and Practicing "Outside the Box"

Today's podcast episode continues our discussion on Mindfulness Skills, picking up from Part 1 (which was Ep. 83). This topic explores the possibilities for growth and greater freedom that come from pursuing a mindful path. And, with a combination of traditional methods and outside-the-box practices, mindfulness can be more accessible, relevant, and personalized for each of us. I'm using the term “skill” very deliberately, because skills are learnable – they are qualities or tools we can train in and develop. Mindfulness practices also have many benefits for our health and well-being, but I think of skills as being more intentional in nature. When we know what mindfulness skills are, we can develop them in all kinds of activities, from traditional meditation, to mindful movement, to hobbies, daily tasks, exercise, work, play, and more.  In this episode, I cover Mindfulness Skills 10-20. (I discussed 1-9 in Episode 83, so if you missed that one, you may want to start there.) This is by no means the definitive list of mindfulness skills – you could certainly name more – but I think it's enough to point to the breadth and depth of transformation that mindfulness can bring. 20 Mindfulness Skills: Being present (present-moment awareness) Embodiment (being in your body) Steady Focus Ability to shift attention Deep Listening Intention Non-judgment (suspending interpretation) Being with emotions without getting lost in them Decreasing Reactivity Acceptance (allowing things to be as they are) Recognizing impermanence Observing thoughts and tracking thought patterns Investigation Relaxing identification with emotions and thoughts Noticing habits that create more stress or suffering Letting Go Increasing kindness, compassion, and empathy Cultivating appreciation and gratitude Developing Patience Nurturing Perseverance   Each skill could truly be its own podcast episode, so here I try to introduce them (relatively briefly) with a few quotes, images, Buddhist concepts, and personal anecdotes sprinkled in to provide a sketch of the terrain. Part of what inspired this topic is that many people over the years have mentioned to me that running, or baking bread, or crocheting (or another activity) is their meditation. If you feel at all meditative while doing an activity, I hope you will build on that! Learning about mindfulness skills can help you identify what positive qualities your favorite practice is growing – and where the gaps may be. So, in this episode, I offer examples of working on mindfulness skills as you would in traditional meditation, but also in mindful movement and in a creative array of other forms. The possibilities are infinite!   For more links and resources mentioned in this episode, find the show notes at movedtomeditate.yoga/podcast. What Are "Mindfulness Skills?" (Part 1)

Moved To Meditate Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 18, 2024 32:16

In this podcast episode, I'm addressing the question: What Are “Mindfulness Skills?” We'll be covering a list of learnable abilities and characteristics we are developing through mindfulness practice. What are these skills, and why pay attention to them? A skill is something you deliberately train - it's not just an innate quality, personality trait, or talent that you're born with. We might also talk about some of these as “benefits” we gain from mindfulness, but thinking about it in terms of “skills” reminds us that these outcomes are learnable, and that we can grow through our mindfulness practice. This topic is relevant to Mindful Movement because if we're going to practice mindfulness beyond the traditional sitting practice, or in an alternative way to make meditation more accessible, we need to consider what it is that we're attempting to cultivate. What is the essence that the techniques are designed to teach us? Basically…how do we know we're still practicing mindfulness? There are many creative ways we can experience and practice mindfulness. I've heard many people say “running is my meditation,” or “I find mindfulness in cooking, or art, or knitting.” I think that's absolutely valid. Personally, I'm a big fan of practicing and teaching mindfulness through movement forms like Qigong and Yoga, and my hikes in nature are very connected to my mindfulness practice. But, to use an activity (that's not traditional meditation) to genuinely develop mindfulness, to truly progress and experience the benefits of practice, we need intention and some idea of where we're going. That's where mindfulness skills come in. If we can identify some of the skills developed in traditional mindfulness practice, we can bring them into any meditation, movement style, exercise, creative activity, or daily life situation that we want. And, ultimately, this is great for any mindfulness practitioner (even the champion sitters), because integrating mindfulness fully into day-to-day life is truly the goal. In this episode, I will talk about the first nine of these mindfulness skills. The rest of the list will be covered in Part 2, coming out in a few weeks. Being present (present-moment awareness) Embodiment (being in your body) Steady Focus Ability to shift attention Deep Listening Intention Non-judgment (suspending interpretation) Being with emotions without getting lost in them Decreasing Reactivity Acceptance (allowing things to be as they are) Recognizing impermanence Observing thoughts and tracking thought patterns Investigation Relaxing identification with emotions and thoughts Noticing habits that create more stress or suffering Letting Go Increasing kindness, compassion, and empathy Cultivating appreciation and gratitude Developing Patience Nurturing Perseverance - I think this topic can help to flesh out our understanding of what mindfulness is, and why we might put energy into practicing it. When you see the scope of what we are developing in a full-spectrum mindfulness practice, you see that it's not just another quickie technique, or superficial buzzword. And, if you have another activity you consider your form of meditation - like running, or walking in nature, or knitting/crocheting, or cooking – I encourage you to reflect on which mindfulness skills you are developing. That way you can steer your activity towards a deeper and more expansive practice that truly gives you the benefits of meditation. ---- For more links and resources mentioned in this episode, find the show notes at movedtomeditate.yoga/podcast. This week's guest is Dr. Rachel Goldsmith Turow.  This was an easy conversation as Dr. Rachel and I think and practice in similar ways.  Rachel Goldsmith Turow, Ph.D., is a psychotherapist, research scientist, mindfulness and compassion teacher, and an adjunct faculty member at Seattle University and at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.   Dr. Turow's work explores the connections among attention, self-criticism, stressful life experiences, and mental health. She is the author of The Self-Talk Workout: Six Science-Backed Strategies to Dissolve Self-Criticism and Transform the Voice in Your Head (Shambhala), and Mindfulness Skills for Trauma and PTSD: Practices for Recovery and Resilience (Norton) along with over 30 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters. Over the years, Dr. Turow noted that many of the strategies that help trauma survivors can also build emotional well-being more generally. In particular, Dr. Turow observed (and later researched) that reducing self-criticism improved people's anxiety, traumatic stress, and depression. After several decades of observing the benefits of mindfulness, self-compassion, and cognitive behavioral practices, both for herself and among her patients and students, Dr. Turow now teaches specific mental techniques that decrease self-criticism and cultivate self-encouragement.      Dr. Turow teaches three "science and practice" Psychology courses at Seattle University: Mindfulness Skills, Developing Compassion, and Building Resilience. In each course, students practice new mental skills and other behaviors while also learning about scientific research studies related to each technique. In collaboration with her colleagues at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Dr. Turow also provides training in sensitive practice to healthcare workers serving cancer patients who are also survivors of sexual violence. She has led mindfulness, compassion, and resilience workshops nationally for audiences ranging from university and high school educators to active military personnel.   You can find Dr. Turow at www.rachelturow.com

A mindfulness-based intervention to increase resilience to stress in university students (the Mindful Student Study): a pragmatic randomised controlled trial

Background: The rising number of young people going to university has led to concerns about an increasing demand for student mental health services. We aimed to assess whether provision of mindfulness courses to university students would improve their resilience to stress. Methods: We did this pragmatic randomised controlled trial at the University of Cambridge, UK. Students aged 18 years or older with no severe mental illness or crisis (self-assessed) were randomly assigned (1:1), via remote survey software using computer-generated random numbers, to receive either an 8 week mindfulness course adapted for university students (Mindfulness Skills for Students [MSS]) plus mental health support as usual, or mental health support as usual alone. Participants and the study management team were aware of group allocation, but allocation was concealed from the researchers, outcome assessors, and study statistician. The primary outcome was self-reported psychological distress during the examination period, as measured with the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation Outcome Measure (CORE–OM), with higher scores indicating more distress. The primary analysis was by intention to treat. This trial is registered with the Australia and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, number ACTRN12615001160527. Findings: Between Sept 28, 2015, and Jan 15, 2016, we randomly assigned 616 students to the MSS group (n=309) or the support as usual group (n=307). 453 (74%) participants completed the CORE–OM during the examination period and 182 (59%) MSS participants completed at least half of the course. MSS reduced distress scores during the examination period compared with support as usual, with mean CORE–OM scores of 0·87 (SD 0·50) in 237 MSS participants versus 1·11 (0·57) in 216 support as usual participants (adjusted mean difference −0·14, 95% CI −0·22 to −0·06; p=0·001), showing a moderate effect size (β −0·44, 95% CI −0·60 to −0·29; p

I'm back from a trip through Illinois speaking to psychologists, counselors, social workers, marriage & family therapists, teachers, speech pathologists, and occupational therapists. Today's podcast focuses on building mindfulness skills for teenagers.  Research shows that our attention is on something other than what we are doing 1/2 of our awake time.  We live in a culture that reinforces rushing, restlessness, multi-tasking, speedy information, quick fix instagram, snapchat quick drops, and sleep deprivation.  One of the things young people (and all of us) need is mindfulness.  Mindful attention, mindfulness grounding, mindful eating, and taking time.   See Dr. Dan’s new book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1935576062/?tag=medrounpublic-20

Value-Based Living   Hello there CBT School Family Welcome to another episode of Your Anxiety Toolkit Podcast. As you may know, each week I do my best to bring you a new tool or idea for you to put in your toolkit, in hope that it will give you some skills to manage anxiety, panic and other difficult thoughts, feelings and sensations. I always envision that I am slowly handing you one tool after another and that you are carefully packing those tools into your toolkit or tool belt, so that you feel ready to face your day, with or without anxiety. This week, I want to discuss with you your metaphorical toolkit; the box or belt in which you hold dear to your heart and use daily to help you live your best life.   The most important thing to understand in today’s podcast is that carrying a tool belt/toolbox/toolkit is a choice.  Every week, you freely join me for a weekly discussion about recovery and living a great life, while having anxiety.   You don’t have to carry your toolkit and all the tools around.  Many choose not to carry a tool belt or any tools.  But you, you do.  It’s pretty cool if you ask me. You see, the tools your put in your toolkit are your mindfulness skills.   Your toolkit, the place you hold these tools, is your values.  If you are on a mission to be a better human, you obviously value your wellbeing.  It is a value that you stand by.  You value your recovery.  You value your quality of life.  Using these tools of yours contributes to value-based living. Values are very important to our recovery.  The only problem is, that sometimes fear can come in and stomp all over our values.  Sometimes fear can lead us away from our values and away from our toolkit.  Sometimes fear can lead us towards other problematic behaviors, such as compulsions including checking, counting, avoidance, reassurance seeking and mental rumination.  Fear can also lead us towards anger and saying mean things to ourselves. Today, we talk about identifying our values and ways to use the tools you have to help you lead with values.  We use concepts from Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, also knows as ACT.  ACT is a very helpful treatment modality that beautifully compliments Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP). I hope you find it helpful! Forward we go, Kimberley

SPECIAL TOPIC night -- "Recovering From The Effects of Childhood Abuse, Neglect, and Trauma." (Part 2 of 4). Tonight we will finish Mindfulness Skills and begin Distress Tolerance Skills/Strategies. The emphasis is to learn to bear pain skillfully since avoiding pain tends to increase it and can lead to impulsive acts that can make the situation worse. The strategies we will discuss are Distracting, Self-Soothing, Improving the Moment, and thinking of Pros and Cons of tolerating vs not tolerating painful, distressing emotions. Mindfulness skills are recommended by the VA for reducing symptoms of PTSD, and both sets of skills can reduce dissociation, anxiety, panic, depression, suicidal ideation, and other methods of self harm. When we learn these skills, and can be present and aware in our lives, we can move on to skills to regulate emotions, and interpersonal skills to improve our relationships including family, friends, and work which can improve our quality of life, enjoyment, and happiness. ~~ Article 1: Mindfulness Lessons - Article 2: Distress Tolerance Lessons ~~ This series of special topic shows will give us an opportunity to share information and experience with each other as we continue on our healing journey. The moderator will be Jacque LaFountaine RN, retired, who has been actively recovering from childhood abuse and trauma for 25 years. About the book: Introverts are powerful observers and creators. If you are an introvert, this book will show you how to tap into your inherent introvert strengths and “awaken” your potential using mindfulness meditations and cognitive behavioral techniques. In a world that favors the outgoing, gregarious extrovert, being an introvert can be difficult. But the truth is that introverts have distinct advantages—as long as they know how to use them. Unlike extroverts, who draw their energy from social interaction, your energy comes from quiet reflection. Is it any wonder then, that mindfulness can help you hone your natural talents? In The Awakened Introvert, mindfulness expert and card-carrying introvert Arnie Kozak provides a comprehensive set of mindfulness and cognitive behavioral tools to help you maximize your introvert strengths (such as rich access to your interior) while minimizing your introvert weaknesses (such as a tendency toward worry and rumination). In the book, you’ll learn powerful strategies to help you monitor your energy; recharge after social interactions; improve social and communication skills; and take advantage of your capacity for quiet reflection, and sweet, sweet solitude. If you’re looking to unlock the full potential of your unique introvert brain, this book provides a fun, practical, and authentic “user’s manual.” About the author: Long before mindfulness was fashionable, Arnie Kozak, was studying, practicing, and teaching mindfulness and Buddhist psychology. Beginning with a journey to India in the 80′s, Arnie began his lifelong practice in mindfulness meditation. Intent on finding a way to bring the practical healing attributes of mindfulness he began incorporating these techniques in his private practice. In 2002 Dr. Kozak created Exquisite Mind in Burlington, Vermont as a vehicle that could expand the value of mindfulness to larger audiences including professionals and corporations, health care providers, public groups and, most recently with Exquisite Mind Golf, amateur and professional golfers. His first book, Wild Chickens and Petty Tyrants: 108 Metaphors for Mindfulness (Wisdom Publications, 2009) is a thoughtful, funny, and inspiring translation of mindfulness practice through the inventive use of metaphor applicable to our daily lives. It has been translated into three languages. His second book, The Everything Buddhism Book, is an accessible introduction to the Buddha’s wisdom and the Buddhist traditions. The Everything Guide to the Introvert Edge and Mindfulness A-Z: 108 Insights for Awakening Now are forthcoming books. Arnie’s ability to translate ancient healing traditions into pragmatic applications suitable for modern lifestyles through the use of metaphors have made him a contributing voice in the Mindfulness Revolution.

Do you have a hard time saying no to others, no matter how outrageous their requests? If so, you might be a chronic people-pleaser. Unfortunately, because we live in a society that praises putting the needs of others before ourselves, it can be difficult to break this bad habit. And while thinking of others is always commendable, there is a fine line between sacrifice and senseless approval seeking. In The Need to Please, a leading mindfulness expert and psychotherapist provides compassionate, mindfulness-based techniques that will help chronic people-pleasers like you address and overcome your fears of failure, inappropriate self-sacrificing, loss of personal identity, and voracious need of approval. In addition, you will learn to put an end to the codependent behaviors that lie at the heart of being a people-pleaser.   Change is hard—especially when it means going against years of social conditioning. But if you’re ready to “Just Say No,” to others’ demands and start saying, “Yes” to your own needs, this book can help.   You can find out more about these mindfulness techniques atlivingmindfully.org.   About the author: Micki Fine, MEd, LPC, is the founder of Mindful Living in Houston, TX and a certified mindfulness teacher.
