Métis archeologist Kisha Supernant was sometimes called a 'grave robber' when she started her line of work. With an eye to restorative justice, she tries to help Indigenous communities locate the graves of children who died at residential schools. Now, she's called on to find children's graves. In this public lecture, Supernant explains how the use of traditional knowledge systems, as well as cutting-edge ground radar techniques helps families find their loved ones. The work also allows communities to begin healing. It's a science, she says, of the heart and head.

Episode 152  In this deeply personal episode, I explore the impact of Pope Francis' recent passing, especially how he became a bridge of trust during my period of intense interior deconstruction. Over the past decade, I've grappled with my Catholic faith, my relationship with the church, and undergone a profound journey of inner healing. I share how Pope Francis' actions and witness offered me a path through complex trauma and relational betrayals, both familial and institutional. This episode is dedicated to my fellow trauma survivors who struggle with their faith, relationships, and especially with the institutional Church. RELATED LINKS:Pope says he is 'deeply sorry' to Indigenous Peoples in CanadaPope Francis did the right thing when others would not, says residential school survivorWhy Pope Francis may be hesitant to rescind the Doctrine of DiscoveryPope Francis' Address to the Indigenous Peoples: First Nations, Métis and IntuitJoint Statement of the Dicasteries for Culture and Education and for Promoting Integral Human Development on the “Doctrine of Discovery”, 30.03.2023Watch this recording on YouTube.Follow me on my Instagram account @animann for more material on the integration journey and subscribe to my monthly reflections on Begin Again.CHAPTER MARKERS[00:00] Introduction[00:48] Personal Struggles and Deconstruction[02:28] Pope Francis' Impact[05:30] Journey of Healing and Integration[07:50] Struggles with the Church[09:58] Uncomfortable with Pope Francis 2013-2015[13:38] Not In Touch with My Exiled Parts[18:45] Awakening to Dysfunction and Abuse[29:16] Trauma and Betrayal in the Church[36:05] Father Wound Re-triggered[38:06] Compassion in Secular Spaces[40:41] Pandemic Retreat Experience with Gabor Maté[42:09] Indigenous Trauma and Residential Schools[44:58] Seeking Apology from the Pope[48:57] Personal Reflections on Fatherhood and Healing[58:38] Pope Francis' Apology to the Indigenous People of Canada[01:03:55] Repudiating the "Doctrine of Discovery"[01:09:16] A Church That Doesn't Repair[01:13:37] Hope for the Church[01:18:28] ConclusionREFLECTION PROMPTHave you ever found yourself reevaluating something you once felt certain about? Is it too late to say sorry? Do apologies for medical harm actually create change? The Canadian Medical Association recently issued an apology to Indigenous Peoples for the harms inflicted upon them by the medical system, acknowledging a history of racism, neglect, and abuse. In this crucial episode, we delve into the significance of this apology and explore what true transformative medical justice must entail for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples in Canada. Our esteemed guest, Dr. Jamaica Cass, a First Nation physician, brings her invaluable perspective to this vital conversation. We discuss the limitations of apologies without concrete action and the urgent need for systemic change that respects and upholds Indigenous sovereignty within healthcare. Dr. Cass sheds light on the necessary steps to dismantle colonial structures in medicine, foster culturally safe practices, and ensure equitable access to care that is self-determined by Indigenous communities. Join The Gritty Nurses as we unpack what accountability looks like beyond words, and envision a future where Indigenous health and well-being are centered through the recognition of their inherent rights and sovereignty in healthcare delivery. More About Dr. Cass A member of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, Turtle Clan, Dr. Cass practices Indigenous Health as a primary care physician on-reserve at Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. In addition, as an assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Queen's University, she currently supervises both undergraduate clerks and family medicine residents. Dr. Cass completed her family medicine residency at the University of Calgary, where she served on the Indigenous Health Working Group in the department of Family Medicine. Prior to her residency, Dr. Cass spent four years in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she completed her Medical Doctorate at Tulane University. With an extensive background in science, Dr. Cass earned her PhD from Queen's University in breast cancer molecular biology before pursuing a career in medicine. She was recognized with several institutional, national and international awards, including the American Association for Cancer Research MICR Scholar-in-Training Award, the Terry Fox Foundation Transdisciplinary Award and the Robert Sutherland Fellowship. While a student at Queen's, she was active in Indigenous mentorship and advocacy, serving on the Indigenous Council of Queen's University and the Native Students' Association, and mentoring Indigenous undergraduate students.  CMA Apology https://www.cma.ca/our-focus/indigenous-health/apology-harms-indigenous-peoples#:~:text=We%20realize%20we%20have%20left,CMA%20apology%20to%20Indigenous%20Peoples   Order our Book, The Wisdom Of Nurses! Aaron Gunn, Residential Schools and the Meanings of Genocide

Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - In a series of tweets between 2019 and 2021, the Conservative candidate for North Island Powell River, Aaron Gunn, argued against the the idea that residential schools were a form of genocide.  In the first of these he agreed that they were ‘truly horrific events,' but added that people should not refer to them with a loaded word like ‘genocide' that does not remotely reflect the reality of what happened.” He was wrong, residential schools are a perfect example of genocide. Mr Gunn's understanding of the term appears to be limited to ‘killing of a large number of people,' but when Raphael Lemkin coined the term he stated it wasn't necessary to kill people. There were also genocides of political and social institutions, culture, language, national feelings, religion, and the economic existence of national groups. Lemkin was a Jewish lawyer who fled from his native Poland after the Germans overran it in 1939. He was deeply concerned about NAZI Germany's extermination policy. In his book Axis Rule in Occupied Europe (1944), Lemkin wrote:  “By ‘genocide' we mean the destruction of a nation or of an ethnic group. This new word, coined by the author to denote an old practice in its modern development, is made from the ancient Greek word genos (race, tribe) and the Latin cide (killing), thus corresponding in its formation to such words as tyrannicide, homocide, infanticide, etc. Generally speaking, genocide does not necessarily mean the immediate destruction of a nation, except when accomplished by mass killings of all members of a nation. It is intended rather to signify a coordinated plan of different actions aiming at the destruction of essential foundations of the life of national groups, with the aim of annihilating the groups themselves. The objectives of such a plan would be disintegration of the political and social institutions, of culture, language, national feelings, religion, and the economic existence of national groups, and the destruction of the personal security, liberty, health, dignity, and even the lives of the individuals belonging to such groups.” He added that. “Genocide has two phases: one, destruction of the national pattern of the oppressed group; the other, the imposition of the national pattern of the oppressor. This imposition, in turn, may be made upon the oppressed population which is allowed to remain upon the territory …” Lemkin also coined the term cultural genocide, which is the systematic destruction of traditions, values, language, and other elements that make one group of people distinct from another.  How does this relate to Aaron Gunn's Tweets? These three appear to be misguided:  “There was no genocide. Stop lying to people and read a book …”;  “I understand that people have a misinformed view of history which they have reached following a steady and persistent attempt to discredit Canada's past in order to undermine its institutions and future.”  “Residential schools were asked for by Indigenous bands in Eastern Ontario when John A MacDonald was still a teenager.” This last remark refers to residential schools in eastern Ontario sometime between 1828 and 1835, when John A MacDonald was a teenager, but according to the Canadian Encyclopedia, the purpose of residential schools changed during the 1870s. “With the passage of the British North America Act in 1867, and the implementation of the Indian Act (1876), the government was required to provide Indigenous youth with an education and to assimilate them into Canadian society.”

Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - Aaron Gunn, the Conservative candidate for North Island Powell River, has responded to some of the allegations made about his position on residential schools. I am reading this out from his Twitter feed. I'd like to clear up what has been said today. I have always been firm in recognizing the truly horrific events that transpired in residential schools, and any attempt to suggest otherwise is simply false. I have never wavered in condemning these institutions of abuse, where countless First Nations suffered at the hands of a patronizing federal government. I have never wavered in condemning the theft of children from their families, or the forced destruction of Indigenous language, culture and traditions. Not only have I repeatedly denounced what happened at residential schools, through my documentaries I have also interviewed more than two dozen Indigenous leaders on the importance of economic reconciliation with First Nations while also highlighting the disproportionate impact the addictions crisis has had on their communities. Leader Pierre Poilievre explained it well at the AFN Assembly last July: I know that the relationship between First Nations and the federal government has been painful and destructive because of the federal government's terrible decisions. For decades, the residential school system removed children from the love and care of their families. It was a monstrous abuse of excessive governmental power that cut your children off from their cultures, languages, and traditions. In many cases, students were neglected and abused tragically. Too many young children never came home. Those were terrible crimes by a big and imposing government against each victim and against your communities. In 2008, the federal government under then Prime Minister Harper issued an apology and launched the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, but there is more work to be done. I know that Canada has no future without a strong future for the First Nations people. We must acknowledge the terrible mistakes of our past and learn from our history while celebrating Canada as the greatest country on earth. I look forward to working with great candidates such as former Haisla Chief Ellis Ross, to repeal the Liberals' radical anti-resource laws to quickly green-light good projects so First Nations and all Canadians bring home more powerful paycheques.

This week, the BC Conservative MLA for Vancouver Quilchena reposted a National Post article about the former residential school site in Kamloops, adding a comment that the number of confirmed child burials at the site is zero. The article is about James Heller who pushed the Law Society of B.C. to change its training material to say there were "potentially" burial sites at the former residential school in Kamloops — instead of more definitive language. Brodie is only one of a number of BC Conservative candidates who has questioned the history of residential school abuse. Upon arrival, their hair was cut off, their names were changed, and they were regularly beaten for speaking their native languages. At these schools, children faced hard labor, starvation, physical and sexual abuse, and even death. In recent years, hundreds of bodies have been discovered in unmarked graves at the sites of these old schools across the country but estimates of the dead reach into the thousands if not tens of thousands. The US government did this, and then it conveniently forgot about it until very recently, like a couple weeks ago recent. Let's fix that. Plus, Canada will need to nearly double its military spending to fulfil its NATO commitment of 2% of GDP by 2032 according to the federal budget watchdog. The slogan never should have been "Every Child Matters!" That was like responding to "Black Lives Matter" with "All Lives Matter." We should have used "Native Children Matter" or "Our Children Matter." But the final report from the Interior Department on Residential Schools suggest our children didn't and still don't matter to government officials. The sad part is, we aren't showing much concern for Deb Haaland's whitewash of this American Genocide either.
